Well in fact welcome to all after a wonderful summer of sunshine and blue skies. I’m guessing the best since 1976 if you’re old enough to recall. If like me you’re anxious about not getting any water on your lawn, it looks like mother nature is now taking care of that for us.
We have had to get used to the idea of dropping down a league after achieving the highest level ever for the club for the last two seasons at Level 5. Interestingly talking to Mark Bruce, the Gravesend Chairman, they had a similar experience a few years ago. Strangely losing matches, by a few points, that could and should have been won and then beating the better teams. I don’t think any of us will forget the last match we played at the end of our first season in that league, beating table toppers Havant and surviving in that league for another season, by the skin of our teeth! Unfortunately we couldn’t replicate that in the second season.
Theres no doubt that, as great an experience as it was, it was hard work for all of players, coaches and supporters, after years of moving up the leagues.
Gravesend Rugby Football Club has a rich history dating back to its formation in 1921. Originally known as Darenth RFC, the club played regularly in Dartford until the end of the 1929/30 season. The club’s name was changed to Darenth (Gravesend) RFC in 1932/33, and it was renamed Gravesend (Darenth) RFC in 1945/46. The club has a thriving mini and youth sections and also operates a women’s rugby union team nicknamed the Gremlins. The club’s facilities include cricket, bowls, tennis, hockey, pigeon fanciers, table tennis, Wheelchair Rugby League, Wheelchair Rugby 7’s, and pétanque.
Please Note
We are currently recruiting for our Walking Rugby side and especially looking for ladies to join us. We play on Monday nights at 5.45 thru 7 pm and generally end up in the clubhouse after to talk about our brilliant performances….
Have a great afternoon, whatever the outcome. Hopefully the new pitch side bar is open and we don’t have to trudge all that way back to the clubhouse for a wee tipple…
Enjoy,
Alan Fisher President, Horsham RUFC
