BIHARI LANGUAGE ~ Suprity ~ A Couple of months back, I was in a get- together party and I was the single person who was from Bihar. During our conversation in the party, I realised people from other states in India think that people from Gujarat speak Gujarati, people from Bengal speak Bengali and similarly people from Bihar should speak Bihari or some people know Bhojpuri is the only language in Bihar. But, it’s not true. Bihari is not a language. There is a very famous proverb in Hindi about Indian culture, which we have heard most often during our growing years which says: Kos kos pe badale pani, char kos pe vani (The taste of water changes every 3 km, and the language changes every 12 km.) The proverb is also very true in Bihar. There are numerous spoken languages in BIHAR but has mainly five written languages besides Hindi and Urdu. Hindi is the first and Urdu is the second official language of the Bihar. The next main languages include Maithili, Magahi, Bhojpuri, Bajjika and Angika. The word Maithili is derived from Mithila. Mithila was an ancient kingdom ruled by king Janak (father of Goddess Sita). Maithili is spoken by the people from Mithila region and eastern part of Bihar (current districts Samastipur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Begusarai, Muzaffarpur ,Vaishali, Purnia , Bhagalpur, Shivhar, Sitamadhi, Khagaria, Saharsa, Madhepura, Supaul, Madhepura, Arariya, Purnia, Kishanganj and Katihar. The Magahi language, also known as Magadhi, is a language spoken by the people from Magadh region most of which is currently in south Bihar (districts - Patna, Gaya, Jahanabad, Arwal, Nalanda, Navada, and Aurangabad). Magadhi Prakrit was the ancestor of Magahi, from which the latter's name derives. Magadh was an ancient kingdom ruled by King Ashoka with core areas in Bihar and south of Ganges. Bhojpuri is the combination of Maithili and Magahi. Bhojpuri is spoken by the people living in West Bihar (districts - Bhojpur, Buxar, Kaimur, Gopalganj,Shivan,Sharan, Aara and Rohtash). It is also spoken by the people from eastern Utter Pradesh. Angika also known as Chhika-Chhiki is written in the Devanagari script, although the Anga Lipi and Kaithi scripts were used historically. Angika is spoken by the people from eastern part of Bihar (districts - Bhagalpur and Banka). Bajjika is spoken by the people from northern part of the Bihar (currently in Purbi and Paschmi Champaran).

Suprity Nath is from Samastipur, Bihar and currently lives in Farmington Hills with her husband Deependra Nath. She got married in 2013 and the same year she moved to the USA. She loves India and always wants to return back India and stay with her family. Suprity loves to do DIY projects and interior decoration

Homeless People ~Amishu Singh~ I have always looked out the window and said to myself,” Will there ever be a change in the world that has wings but has never taught itself how to fly…” I have thought of all the needy and homeless. Just the thought of being a homeless orphan, touches me, deep down to my heart. Have you ever donated any money to temple or just to the poor? Have you ever thought, about how these suffering peoples’ life is? They bear every day down to the code. Try doing something that changes all of this. Everyone’s got wings. And someday they will know how to use them. Make a difference by doing something small that effects everything, even the smallest detail. Dreams

Dance

Don't give up on your dreams It someday will gleam Don't listen to the ones who turn you down There will always be someone around You are going to soar through the sky But remember, you will have to say goodbye, To your other dreams..

Dance, you make me leap like a Gazelle Dream like a shooting star Melt like caramel Make me wanna play a Hawaiian Guitar Give me a terrible backache And put a smile on my face

HI! My name is Amishu Singh, and I am 11 years old. I go to Smith Middle School, and am in 6th grade. I am very passionate about art, dance, and baking. I am a total bookworm and am in love with graphic novels. I will be sharing my artwork in the MIBIHAR art corner!

Rio Olympics from Kanush’s Perspective

The 2016 Olympics officially known as the Games of XXXI Olympiad and commonly known as Rio 2016, held at Rio di Janeiro, Brazil. Rio 2016 was 16 days long international multi-sports event. More than 11000 athletes participated at Rio Olympics out of which 45% of them were women; this is the highest participation till date in the history of Modern Olympics games. Now I am going to talk about few star athletes who really gave me and the world new role models. They were best in their performance and sporting spirit, regardless of winning medal or not these athletes surely left a mark in the history of Rio Olympics. Meet the first Star Athlete, Gaurika Singh, the youngest athlete at Rio 2016. She is from Nepal; only thirteen years old participated in swimming, although she didn’t win any medal but being Olympian at this young age itself an achievement. Simone Biles, the teenage prodigy, part of USA Gymnastics team earned five medals. She has a gymnastics move ‘Biles’ named after her. First time Olympian graced as flag bearer of Team USA at the closing ceremony of Rio 2016. Iron Butterfly Katie Ledecky, 19 years old part of USA Swim team is unarguably the best female swimmer on the planet. Ledecky is the most decorated female athlete at Rio Olympics with 4 gold, 1 silver and two world records. Deepa Karmakar, 23 years old first female gymnast from India to qualify Olympics, she attained fourth position at Women’s Vault gymnastic event at Rio Olympics. Even she missed the medal; Deepa is an inspiration for young generation. Sakshi Malik, 24 years old Indian freestyle wrestler, she got India its first medal at Rio Olympics. She is the first Indian female wrestler to win an Olympic medal. P V Sindhu, 21 years old part of India’s Badminton team, earned Silver medal at Rio Olympics. She became the first Indian women to win an Olympic Silver Medal. P V Sindhu’s Olympics journey began on one leg, and she won the silver medal with the break the leg performance. Well, everyone can participate at Olympics Games, age or gender doesn’t matter, what matters is hard work. I would like to promise myself to work very hard. About the AuthorKanush was born in Bangalore, India. Kanush is 10 years old and she is in Fifth Grade. She loves to eat South Indian food. She loves to play out door Games and she is also learning to play Violin. Enjoy this year’s Annual MIBIHAR Diwali Function. Bye

Brain and Balance Dr. Niru Prasad Our body is controlled by our brain while we sit, stand on our feet, or try to walk with a steady gait without falling. Our brain sends signals to our eyes, ears, and the sensory and motor systems to balance body. Furthermore our memory and emotions are also controlled by brain. Just about everything we do in our lives is controlled by our brain which sends signals through sensory and motor pathways. Any kind of balance issue can cause a disruption in our daily activities. This can lead to short attention span, abnormal sleep problems, fatigue, gait disorder, dizziness or loss of balance.

Balance control process The 3 major components for balance control are: 1. Our sensory systems for accurate information about body position relative to the environment 2. Our brain's ability to process this information 3. Our muscles and joints for coordinating the movement required to maintain balance

Loss of balance control Loss of balance control occurs when there is any pathology in the brain, eyes, and/or inner ear vestibular system as we grow older. The natural aging process produces changes in our body and brain due to poor circulation; however, a healthy senior citizen might not have any issues. Dizziness among our seniors can be due to degenerative or infectious processes in the brain. Diseases are not the only etiologies; there are other components such as stroke, head injuries, concussions, etc. that can also affect our balance system. Various combinations of both prescription and nonprescription medications can be detrimental to our brain. Our brain controls the body through connections it makes with the central nervous system. The different parts of the brain are the cerebrum, brain stem, cerebellum pons and medulla. Each of these parts has different functions that send impulses to the body. The cerebrum is divided by a longitudinal fissure into 2 hemispheres which each contain 5 discrete lobes: the frontal, parietal temporal, occipital and insula. These lobes are hidden under the Sylvain fissure. Most of our activities require a combination of multiple areas in both hemispheres.

The different parts of the frontal lobe include motor fibers carrying impulses from each hemisphere and cross midline in brain stem. Any damage in this area causes paralysis in the opposite side of body. The orbital frontal cortex helps modulate social behaviors. The disinhibition and abnormal behaviors in the aging population results in degenerative changes in this part of the cortex. It is very hard to describe the functions of each hemisphere so the author will include bibliography for readers. What is plasticity? It is the ability of one area of brain to alter its function of cerebrum varying from person to person and is affected by aging process. For example if dominant hemispheric language is damaged in a child before age of 8 years the opposite hemisphere can assume the language function. The gross reorganization of brain function in adults after injury is uncommon however the plasticity remains functional in specific areas of brain throughout life. How to control your balance with daily activities Our everyday activity depends on our mind concentration; focus on what we want to do and improving the self with proper thinking; think positive and accept life as it is. There are modalities to accept in life to stay healthy and lead a normal life as we get older. 1. Eat a well-balanced diet with supplemental vitamins and iron 2. Exercise and practice yoga daily to improve your gait and posture 3. Do crossword puzzles to improve circulations in the brain 4. Those suffering from diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and other debilitating illnesses need help from rehabilitation centers 5. Frequent visits to your physician and be compliant with prescribed medication 6. Preventing falls at home or while walking on streets is a major issue for our seniors 7. At home the rooms should be properly lighted, remove the loose mats and any heavy object that light be hazardous 8. Check Wheel chairs frequently for any loose defects, 9. Wear comfortable shoes while walking 10. And lastly always be positive and happy!

Dr. Niru Prasad got her medical degree in Bihar, India. She is certified in Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. She has authored a book called “How to Keep Your Child Safe and Healthy. This book has been distributed to the developing countries through Orphan Medical Network International (OMNI). With the proceeds of the book, Dr. Prasad started a charity fund for blind orphans at her hometown Patna. Niru is married to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Bala Prasad. She is blessed with four children and six grandchildren.

Importance of Health Satyam Sinha There are 3 types of health. Mental or Emotional, Social, and Physical. Mental and Emotional health is about how we handle our feelings and thoughts every day. Physical health is about how our take care of your body inside and outside. Social health is about how we have a healthy relationship with friends, family and society. What types of things can affect our health? One of the things is not doing enough exercise. People gain weight by getting more calories than burning them. Too much fat in our body can contribute to things like obesity or diabetes. Only 20%-30% of your calories should be fat. If we get too much fat, we can die. When we do exercise, our body responds in such a way that it becomes fit. When you exercise everyday a month. 10 yrs. of life get added. This is one of the amazing things that can happen when we are healthy. Vitamins are substances that help us in fighting with infections. Vitamins A and B are mainly found in green leafy and yellow vegetables. Vitamin C are in orange grapefruits and Vitamin D is obtained through exposure to sunlight. Everybody need a lot of vitamins to survive.

HI! My name is Satyam Sinha. th

I am in 7 grade and live in Troy, Michigan.

Minerals are things that form healthy bones and teeth. A lot of common minerals are calcium and sodium. Minerals are found in most of the foods. Recently, I heard a guest lecture from great guru in Balvihar class and realized that we can become dirty without doing anything...!!! For example, if we stay in the same room and not do anything for few days, our body starts stinking. We don’t need to go to mud. So, just like that our mind also becomes dirty if we don’t always fill it with good thoughts. Our Hindu culture, religious books and traditions are many sources to improve our mental health. I feel that we are mentally healthy, then social health would be automatically improved. Let us promise together to burn our negativity this Diwali and improve mental and social health.

Dashera Dashera is the day that Rama killed Ravana. At home, we do puja and sung bhajans. We also offer sweets to Bhagwan. I read the part of Ramayana where Rama kills Ravana and takes back Sita to Ayodhya. After the puja, I did pranam to Bhagwan and took blessing from my elders. Now, I have started to read a story of Bhagwan every day.

HI! My name is Adishree Verma. I am in 7th grade and live in Sylvania, Ohio.

Navaratri Navaratri is the nine nights when we celebrate the nine forms of mother Durga. We don’t eat any meat or egg for all nine days. We do a puja on the day it starts and the day it ends We also do Garba and Mata ki Chowki. We also did Satyanarayan puja and got gift. I also came to temple for Durga puja.

Qualities to succeed in life Stuti Sinha Hi, I am going to talk about qualities to help you succeed I just want you (the reader) to remember that this article will be my opinion, thoughts, and feelings. So first let’s talk about people judging other people. A lot of people do it today. When people judge other people they forget that they are hurting someone’s heart, emotion, and self-esteem. So basically as we are going through the article the first moral is: Never judge a person’s looks, personality, or characteristic, Next truthfulness jumps in. when you be honest and truthful you Will succeed in your life. You don’t need people to tell you, “Hey, go tell your dad you are going to go to a science program but instead we will go watch the angry bird movie.” In any of these situation, either it’s a movie you want to watch or you broke something. You hid the right thing and broke trust. It’s not going to help you at all. Now, let’s talk about being cool and calm. so when you either get in a fight with someone don’t hold a grudge just let go what happened and move on. That was for staying cool and just going with the flow. Now for staying calm let’s say your mom says, “We are going to watch Star Wars the force awakens. Don’t over react and go smash into the T.V. (or any other crazy thing) just stay calm and do a little happy dance NOT A HUGE HAPPY DANCE. Okay, my time is done I hope that you learned at least one thing from my article. My main thing I wanted to tell you that these qualities will make you succeed and if you figure out more qualities please share them. goodbye!

HI! My name is Stuti Sinha.I like taking pictures and love riding my bike. My passions are dancing , drawing & painting. Hope you have fun time at MIBIHAR Diwali 2016!
