Obituary Ret. Superintendent Stephanie Judith Demeritte

February 18, 1958 - August 29, 2023

On February 18th, 1958, a bundle of joy entered the world, bringing with her the promise of leadership and authority. Stephanie Judith Dames was born to James and Norlene Dames, as their fifth child. Her assertive demeanor was evident from a young age, both within her family and among the neighborhood children.

Stephanie's educational journey began at Ridgeland Primary School, later continuing at Calabash Bay All Age School. However, life took a turn when her mother passed away in 1967, leading her to relocate to Andros. Stephanie's grandmother, Mrs. Lerlene Thompson, and aunts, Gloria Johnson and Meril Rolle, played pivotal roles in raising her and her siblings.

In 1970, Stephanie's brother, Roston, encouraged her to return to Nassau. He generously funded her education at Bahamas Academy, where she discovered her passion for history. Stephanie graduated in 1976, her determination and focus guiding her through.

A significant turning point occurred in 1975 when Stephanie was invited to attend Baptist Bible Church, where she dedicated her life to God. She became actively involved in the church's bus ministry under Pastor Dave Adams. During this time, Mark Demeritte approached her with romantic intentions, but Stephanie was resolute in pursuing her career.

In 1977, while working at Christine and Johnny; House of Sales Department Store, Stephanie and Mark began dating. Their love blossomed, leading to their engagement. In 1978, Stephanie received a call from the Royal Bahamas Police Force and embarked on her journey as Recruit Constable #382 on January 3rd.

Personal life took center stage in 1979 when Stephanie and Mark exchanged vows on December 1st. Their family grew with the arrival of their first child in October 1980, followed by a second child on December 5, 1985. Throughout her tenure with the Police Force, Stephanie earned numerous promotions and accolades, culminating in her appointment as Superintendent on January 4th, 2010. Her nickname, "Iron Lady," symbolized her unwavering dedication as she served in various roles within the organization, including Southern Division, Traffic Division, Control Room, Central Division, Northeastern Division, Airport Division, Southwestern Division, Police College, and the Exhibit Room.

Stephanie's voice, known as "Senior Lady," could be heard on the police radio each morning, leading devotions with her officers. She was a source of encouragement, wisdom, and professionalism, advocating for doing things right the first time. Her firm disciplinary approach and no-nonsense demeanor made her a respected figure within the force. Stephanie devoted 40 years of her life to the Royal Bahamas Police Force before transitioning to a Reserve Officer.

A new chapter beckoned when the former Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, the Rt. Hon Hubert Minnis, reached out to Stephanie. He offered her the role of Director of Security at the Airport Authority, recognizing her expertise. True to her character, Stephanie accepted the challenge, immersing herself in airport logistics. She held this position until 2021 when she decided it was time to retire and savor her golden years with her loving husband, Mark.

Stephanie and Mark were inseparable, not only in their personal lives but also professionally, as they ran a collections business working in partnership with Commonwealth Bank. Their synergy was evident to all who knew them.

However, in the early months of 2022, Stephanie's health took an unfortunate turn. She began to experience troubling complications, prompting her and her daughter to seek medical help at the University of Miami. The dedicated doctors there offered hope and support, and for a time, Stephanie's condition seemed to stabilize.

Tributes

"Once, twice, three times my lady, and I love you, Stephanie Judith Demeritte."

Being married to you for more than four decades was a remarkable journey. You embodied the essence of the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31. While the world had its opinions about your professional demeanor, your no-nonsense tolerance, and your unwavering authority, I had the privilege of witnessing the softer, somewhat shy aspects of your character in our private moments.

I cherished the little things, like your public smacks and pinches, and the way you called my name. You were an exceptional wife in every sense. Despite your demanding career, you found time to wake up early, sometimes with me in the sitting room, keeping me company as you coordinated your clothes on the line before heading to work. You ensured our family had a hot breakfast and a packed lunch every morning.

As a mother and grandmother, you were unmatched. Nothing was too expensive for our family, and your elegance and grace were captivating. I felt immense pride having you by my side when we went out, and I couldn't resist pulling you close in an embrace that always made you blush.

Your style was uniquely your own, and if you bought something new and thought I didn't have the accessories to match, you'd purchase ties, pocket squares, and the like, resulting in my collection of similar items. God was truly gracious to bless me with you as my helpmate and life partner.

No matter the mistakes I made, and I made plenty, you remained respectful and supportive, never embarrassing me publicly. Of course, if necessary, I'd hear about it in the car or at home, but your love and support were unwavering.

My achievements were possible because of God and your presence by my side. When I started my business, you became my chef and baker. When I ventured into new projects, you were the silent but ever-present business partner. Your philanthropic and kind-hearted spirit touched the lives of many. You had a unique ability to discern when help was needed and when it was time to step back.

Stephanie, your life was a testament to your willingness to lend a hand wherever and whenever it was needed. You were a remarkable woman, and I am forever grateful for the love, support, and partnership we shared.

It is an undeniable truth that you lived a life of purpose and service, Stephanie. You gave your all to God, your family, your church, and your country. Your love and dedication were unwavering.

You were not just the love of my life; you were my Tutie Fruitie, my one true love. If I were given the chance, I would choose you again and strive to be even better at cherishing and nurturing our love, having gained the wisdom of our shared experiences.

The scripture says, "He who finds a wife finds a good thing,"and indeed, I found the best thing in you. Rest in peace, my true love.

“When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness”

(Proverbs 31:26)

As I sit and reflect on the words to best describe you and what you mean to me, I am overwhelmed with a spirit of instant gratitude. You lived an exemplary life, and this is only confirmed and highlighted by your departure from this world. A million words could not define the true essence of who you are but it can be summed up as a “Giant of a woman.” A woman that is fearless, no nonsense, a leader, a firm but fair “bosslady.” I still hear these words everyday as people revere and speak of you. I am proud that God blessed this world with your presence and grateful that I got a front row seat and got to call you mommy. Being awarded the distinct privilege of having 24-hour access to you has given me an almost unfair advantage in life. Your wisdom and gentle smile of approval are things that I will forever hold near and dear to me. The last week of your life was spent solely with me and the conversations, laughs, history lessons, strategies and prayers will never be forgotten. Knowing that you lived your life with no regrets and your soul was right with your maker allows me to sleep peacefully at night. Even in death you are still teaching and guiding me and have given me more to aspire to. You were always my trump card. I knew that with you by my side there was only so far I could fall. Because of this, I lived boldly all thanks to you! I will now place that card in my heart knowing you are still up there looking down at your “Senior Man”.

From your hard work and dedication serving your country as a member of The Royal Bahamas Police Force, your commitment to Commonwealth Bank, your devotion to your Church Family and last but not least by any means your Biological Family, you always gave your all and ensured that excellence was the result.

Not many can truly say they did it all their way, but you can, and you did it well! I am proud of you and thank God that I was able to give you your flowers while you were alive and will continue to do so until I close my eyes to join you. Just as the final words spoken between us that faithful and peaceful night as I left your bedside at the hospital, I LOVE YOU! You watched me take my first breath and I watched you take your last, what a cycle! Rest now mommy, I will do as you asked of me and will continue to make you proud, and you continue to watch over me until we meet again.

I will definitely miss you but will always love you!

To my dearest sister Steffi, you helped nurture me into the man Pearlymae, Cleo and you were my substitute mothers from b inspiration, as we grew up through the years.

Steffi, you loved me from your heart no matter how much we argued we could not be drawn apart. You proved to be a friend who helped me through difficult times. Your comforting words were worth more to me than you’d ever known.

You fought for us all in one way or another. You were not just my sister but you were a wife, mother, aunt, cousin, and friend to so many persons that you came in contact with. You gave your best and now it is time to take your rest.

You left and never said good-bye but I understand why. So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep. Your love will forever be cherished in my heart. I’m so grateful to have known you and to have called you my sister.

To Those that went before you, say hello to them for me. Until we meet again.

Your loving brother, Kevie

As your sister, I cannot put into words the heartfelt loss I feel.

Our mom passed but I thank God for allowing you to be there for me

Through the years you were a rock to lean on and a shoulder to cry on.

I knew I could find comfort in you. I thank God for the years He lent you to me You nurtured, cared for, and taught me. Helping me grow spiritually and financially.

By watching you I saw the Christian attitude. You not only talked Christ but walked Him. Which led me to do the same. Thank you for leading me to the Lord. Where I know we will one day be reunited

In a garden filled with billions of flowers, on August 29 2023 God picked out a rose so dear to my heart, my “Steph” . I’m so glad on your last few weeks with us I got to spend time and create memories. I truly will miss our days on the porch laughing and talking about old times .

As anyone who knows you knows , you’re not the most emotional person , however you had a strange way of showing your love to others . From the way you walked to the way you talked respect was definitely something you portrayed and the only thing you accepted .
