RESEARCH ABOUT EMBT

ENRIC MIRALLES

BENEDETTA TAGLIABUE

Spanish architect who studied and worked in Barcelona, Spain. He graduated from the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 1978. (UPC).

An architect from Italy who now lives and works in Barcelona, Spain. She earned her bachelor ’s degree from the “Università Iuav di Venezia” in Venice, Italy.

Tagliabue started working with Enric Miralles, with whom she co-founded the EMBT studio. She became the director of EMBT after the death of her husband, Enric Miralles.

1955 - 2000

Following a series of projects with his first wife, Carme Pinós whom he designed the archery range for the 1992 Barcelona’s Olympic Games which established his reputation. Miralles later married fellow architect Benedetta Tagliabue, with whom he co-founded EMBT Architects.

1963 -

Her works experiment with shape and materiality while remaining aware of their surroundings. She has contributed to multiple architectural publications and received numerous international awards in the fields of public space and design, including the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2005.

AWARDS

EMBT won the competition to design the new Edinburgh Parliament building in 1998. The proposal sparked a lot of interest because of its organic ability to combine existing features with new technology using the Barcelona studio’s contemporary and unique language.

In 1997, a competition was held to rebuild the market in Barcelona’s old quarter. EMBT won the competition with a plan that aimed to integrate the setting’s extreme complexity by developing a commercial market complimented by a residential zone and public spaces that incorporated all of the neighborhood’s activities.

This project was developed for the corporation in the Barceloneta neighborhood, which is near to the beach. The goal of the project was to create a tower that would enhance the city skyline while also respecting the tiny scale of the structures that make up the Barceloneta neighborhood.

The Spanish Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo aimed to reflect on the Spanish climate while also recovering the exceptional art of wickerwork in order to revive it and recreate it as a new building technology.

Zhang Daqian, a painter, was born in Neijiang. Excellence Group commissioned EMBT to design Zhang Daqian’s museum in Neijiang, the painter ’s homeland. The museum’s design strategy aimed to incorporate the cultural essence of East and West while also portraying the past and future.

The expansion, designed 10 years after the original project is placed between the old and new youth music schools and creates a new path between them. The foyer is covered by a folding entry roof that links to the existing music school’s upper-floor ramp.

Fudan is a highly remarkable institution with a long history and a distinct personality that is part of a network of universities and their separate buildings in Shanghai. There are two additional campuses in addition to the main one. These campuses are not close together; they are different parts, thus in order to make a link, the buildings must reflect the essence of Fudan and current life.

At peak periods, the business school’s program is projected to draw 8,000 people to the site. Buildings require an easy and clear organization of the complex program in this respect. All public activities, such as the Big Auditorium, library, museum, student food core, and stores, are located on the first, second, and third levels, accordingly. The campus garden is accessible from all of these public levels. On the third and fourth levels, the primary classrooms are situated. The block on the west side is connected by bridges to provide students with a convenient and continuous circulation path. Separate administrative, incubator, research, conference center, and other units are located on top of the classroom and lounge route.

The project’s exterior is defined by vertical and horizontal louvres constructed of ceramic and terracotta in combination. The louvres are constructed and positioned in such a manner that they form a tree trunk pattern, which represents growth and progress. The louvres go further than its intended role as shade mechanisms to take on a deeper poetic meaning by forming trees and arranging the louvres to spell out the project’s name.

In English, the name “Fudan” literally means “heavenly light shines day after day.” As a response, EMBT approached the design of Fudan University’s new campus with the goal of capturing the spirit of Fudan in the new structures. All of the new buildings’ public gathering areas include a roof-landscape to represent heavenly lights that the general populace could experience through the roof landscape. The light that enters the building is filtered, modulated, and staged by this roof structure.
