Old Laurentian RFC v Silhillians RUFC Sponsored by Ray Roberts
Welcome to Fenley Field Welcome to Fenley Field for today’s league game in Midlands 2 West (South). Today we are delighted to welcome our old friends Silhillians RUFC to Fenley Field. We hope that their players, officials and supporters enjoy the day with us. We are also pleased to welcome today’s match referee, Ian Cumming, on an exchange visit from the Hertfordshire Society. We are, once again, indebted to Ray Roberts, who is generously sponsoring today’s match. Year in, year out, Ray is one of our most consistent sponsors and we are very grateful for his continuing support. We enjoyed a great win over Newark in the Intermediate Cup last week with one of our best performances this season so far. In that match Greg Loydall started a 1st XV game for the first time and today is joined in the team by another of our up and coming youngsters, Rudi Reid, making his debut in the senior side. We wish them both well today and look forward to seeing a lot more of them in the years to come. Rudi comes in for another of this season’s outstanding newcomers, Ben Anderson, who is a doctor and has to be on duty this weekend. Anderson senior, David, has also joined the club this season as a VP and last week volunteered to run the line at very short notice as Dave Eales was ill. We were very grateful to David for stepping in and for the great job he did. Our next match in the Intermediate Cup will be the Midlands Quarter Final and is due to be played on Saturday November 26th. At time of writing we don’t know who our opponents will be or whether it will be at home or away. So watch the website for details, which should be known soon. I am sorry to announce the recent passing of John Alexander, an Old Laurentian who played for the club in the ‘70s and will be remembered, I’m sure, by many players of that generation. John was headmaster of Abbots Farm Junior school before ill health forced his early retirement.

Today’s Visitors
Silhillians RUFC The club was formed in 1932 and was then known as Solihull Old Boys, so next year they celebrate their 80th anniversary. In 1953, Sils moved from their original ground to Dingle Lane and the opening game was between a WC Ramsey XV and an Old Sils and Midlands Combined side, watched by a crowd of 3,000. The Club moved to their current home at Copt Heath, with its excellent facilities, in 1967. From this time until the mid 1970's they were probably one of the best Old Boys sides in the Greater Birmingham area. The club then went through a lean spell and decided to go open in 1982, opening its doors to all comers and dropping 'Old' from their name. Sils gradually improved, and earned a series of promotions, reaching Midlands 2 West (S) in 2000/01. Undoubtedly the clubs greatest achievement was the appearance in the 1999 Tetley's Bitter Vase Final at Twickenham. Unfortunately they lost 3‐19 to Billericay but the experience was one that no one will ever forget. Sils are enjoying a good season with a similar record to OLs, having won four of six league games played to date and lying just two places below us in the league table. Since losing to Leamington in early October they have won their last three league games, culminating in an excellent result two weeks ago when they deprived Newbold of their 100% league record. We have a good record against Silhillians and when we last met in season 2009/10 we won both games comfortably. But they will arrive here today in excellent form and no doubt buoyed by that great result against Newbold, so we can expect a tough match which is likely to be hard fought and close.

1st XV Match Report RFU Intermediate Cup, 3rd Round – Saturday 5th November Old Laurentians 25 – Newark 13 Newark arrived at Fenley Field with a 100% record in Midlands 2 East (N) and displayed their pedigree in the early stages of this Intermediate Cup 3rd round game, moving into a 10‐0 lead and looking dangerous. It didn’t start well for OLs when Garrie Reeve was consigned to the bin with a yellow card after just five minutes, giving prop Will Pawsey the chance to make his 1st XV debut when coming on for the scrums. On ten minutes, Newark’s Danny Coen converted a penalty award; then three minutes later their hard running right wing Aloesi Waqalevu came into the line after a scrum and sliced through to score in the corner, Coen converting with a fine kick from wide out. From this unpromising start OLs fought their way back into the game and their pressure was rewarded with three well struck penalties by Danny Orr. The early Newark thrust had been blunted and the sides turned around with the visitors holding a slender 10‐9 lead. Coen kicked an early penalty in the second half to stretch Newark’s lead to 13‐9, but it proved to be the visitors’ last score as OLs progressively took charge of the game. At the core of this effort was the outstanding play of OL’s back row, James Orbinson, Carl Adams and Ben O’Riordan, who frequently snuffed out any attempts by Newark’s pack to pick and drive with some superb tackling. OLs had been forced to change both wings and full back from the previous Saturday through non availability. But the three who stepped in did a great job for the team, none more so than Greg Loydall on his first start in the 1st XV, putting in the sort of composed performance at full back that inspires confidence in the whole team. Luke Harris and Andy Coleman again demonstrated their versatility and value to the team by filling in on the wings. With nine minutes of the second half gone, Orr kicked a fine penalty goal from fully fifty metres and OL’s tails were up at 12‐13 and taking the game to their opponents. Five minutes on and Orr demonstrated again the value of a consistent goal kicker as he slotted his fifth penalty to give OLs the lead at 15‐13 after a penetrating foray by Danny Murch. Newark still posed a threat if allowed to move the ball and twice Waqalevu got a sight of the line, but the winger was cut down by fine tackles from Murch and Loydall. OLs were now well on top, Newark’s discipline was deteriorating and the referee was making them pay for it. After a penalty lineout five metres from the visitors’ line, OL’s pack drove for the try and Ben Anderson was just held, inches from the whitewash. The ball was released and Orr sent Iain Wallis on a weaving run, the centre reached for the line as he was tackled and the referee, right on the spot, awarded the try that Orr converted to put OL’s two scores ahead at 22‐13. When Newark were penalised again as the clock ran down, Orr again exacted retribution with his 7th successful kick from seven and OLs were home and dry.
Results for 2nd and 3rd XVs ‐ Saturday 5th November Warwickshire 2nd XV Cup Old Laurentian 2nd XV 8 – Newbold on Avon 2nd XV 12 The 2nds have been hard hit by calls on their players by the 1st XV and bowed out of the Warwickshire Cup to Newbold. OLs did score the only try of the game, from Howard Harris, and Dave Wallis kicked a penalty. But, despite constant second half pressure, they couldn’t breach the Newbold defence again. Friendly Old Laurentian 3rd XV 24 – Sutton Coldfield 3rd XV 16 The 3rds put in a fine display to beat a strong Sutton Coldfield XV. John Brimley, Danny McCulloch, Ray Smith and the highly promising Tim Dougherty scored the tries and Kev White kicked two conversions.

Sundry Stuff Bonfire Night This year the weather was kind to us and some 1,500 people came through the gate for last Saturday’s Bonfire Night celebration at Fenley Field. As well as producing a very healthy profit to swell club funds it made for a very enjoyable evening for club members and visitors alike with one of our best firework displays in recent years. But these events don’t happen without much hard work, on the night and beforehand, by a lot of willing volunteers. The pyro technicians (they lit the fireworks!) flitting around in the shadows were Arwel Jones, Reiner Ferguson, Keith Finch and Guy Murphy – thanks, guys, for a great display. Keith, Reiner and Tim Dougherty had previously put a lot of effort into building the bonfire ready for Arwel to put the finishing touches on his return from New Zealand. It went up beautifully when Arwel applied his matches to it! Marshalling the car park and gate stewards was Mike Warwick and his very able lieutenants were Garrie Reeve, Ricky Reed, Sam Herman, Matt Miller, Iain Wallis and Steve Pike who did a great job getting everyone in and parked.
Running the outside bar were Bernie and Paul Willis, aided (or was it hindered!) by Jenny Burnett and Jodi and Dani Roderick. Helen’s daughter Chloe manned the kids bar and did a roaring trade in sweets, drinks and glow bracelets. And where would we have been without our very able and always helpful bar team, led by Chris and Helen, who coped wonderfully well during a very busy evening for them.
Support our Soldiers (SOS) Jane Adams is once more organising for Christmas parcels to be sent to our troops on overseas service and would appreciate your support. Collection boxes will be available in the clubhouse for items to be donated but if you can prepare a shoe box with items to be donated, you can be sure it will be much appreciated by the men. Shoe boxes should be wrapped but not sealed and weigh no more than 1.9 kgs, please. If you go to our website you will see a link to suggested items and guidelines. Final collection date is 19th November. Thanks, in anticipation, for your support.

There is the prospect of some interesting local derbies being thrown up when the draw for the quarter‐finals is made, with Newbold, Leamington and Lutterworth all still involved in the cup – and Bugbrooke also fall into that category. Cup holders Stoke on Trent are still involved, as are Upton on Severn, our league opponents next Saturday.
