Ladies Day Welcome to Fenley Field A very warm welcome to Fenley Field for today’s final match in Midlands 2 West (South) for this season. As well as the visiting Droitwich team and officials, we are pleased to welcome today’s match official, Paul Cassidy of the Warwickshire Society. Today is also our annual Ladies Day and we are pleased to welcome all those ladies, and their guests, who support us in so many ways throughout the season. Champions – our 2nd XV are now confirmed as champions of Warwickshire League 1, many congratulations to James Melvin and his team. They should have been playing Nuneaton Old Eds today when a win would have given them the title, but Old Eds have conceded the game as they couldn’t raise a team (or didn’t want to, following the 112‐0 mauling they took in October!!) Today’s Griffin Club lunch will be served a little later than usual, at 2.15pm, as Ladies Day guests will be dining at 1.00. I would like to record the Club’s appreciation of all those members who turn up week in, week out over the season and support the Griffin Club and the team. Particular thanks go to Peter Staines, more than ably supported by Kathy, who has managed this part of our programme so well again this season. And warm thanks also to Chris Finlay, who has once more produced excellent fare, without fail, for every Griffin Club lunch. Two dates for your diary – the Club Dinner will be on Friday 11th May at the club; and one of our most important AGMs in recent years will be on Friday 25th May – more details of both will be found elsewhere in this programme.

Droitwich RFC Droitwich Rugby Football Club was founded in 1972 by a group of local rugby enthusiasts and originally located at St. Peter's Fields. The club has relocated on a number of occasions over the years but since 1998 has made The Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground its home. With its excellent facilities the club has flourished since moving there, winning two league promotions. After a four year absence, Droitwich returned to Midlands Three West (South) (as it then was) for season 2007/08 as champions of Midlands 4 West (S) and had an outstanding season. It didn’t start too well, as they lost their first game to OLs, Denzil Evans kicking a penalty to clinch the points for us in the final minute. But they did the double over champions Sutton Coldfield before finishing in 2nd place and losing the play off for promotion to Stoke on Trent. Season 2008/09 was a disappointing one for the club and they finished well off the pace in sixth position, OLs winning both home and away games against them. Then in 2009/10 they arrived at Fenley Field for the penultimate game of the season in second spot, leading OLs in third by just two points, and we were defending an unbeaten home record. So the scene was set for a thriller and that’s what it turned out to be, OLs clinching a narrow 23‐19 win. We went on to beat Spartans in the final game of the season and clinch promotion in the play‐off against Old Saltleians. Today the tables are turned as it is only Droitwich of the two sides who can make the play‐off spot, our last chance having gone up in smoke against Berkswell last weekend. Droitwich seem to have made a speciality of winning runs late in the season. Last term, after a dire first half, they came good by winning their last nine games, including a defeat of champions Dunlop in their last game. This season they have won 8 out of their 10 games since the turn of the year, losing only to Barkers Butts and drawing with Kidderminster, and arrive today in third position, just two points behind second placed Silhillians and their morale boosted by a good win over Newbold last week. OLs won the first encounter between the sides this season, coming away with a fine 31‐17 win from the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground. But it is Droitwich who have everything to play for today and they will be anxiously looking out for the results of the other leading sides sometime after 4.30 this afternoon.

1st XV Match Report Midlands 2 West (South) ‐ Saturday 14th April, 2012 Berkswell & Balsall 31 ‐ Old Laurentians 12 Berkswell employed their familiar tactics of achieving forward domination to grind out what was ultimately a convincing win over an OLs side who had no answer to their power up front in the first 40 and slumped to a 21‐0 deficit by half time. Not pretty to watch, but very effective! OLs responded in a much more positive fashion in the second half to put their hosts under some pressure and claw back two tries but allowed the home side to add two late tries that gave the final score a slightly lopsided look. As early as the ninth minute, B & B opted for a scrum when awarded a close in penalty and drove OLs back over their line for a try. This was followed after a further six minutes by an incident that led to B & B’s open side flanker being shown a red card by the referee when he quite deliberately directed a hefty boot into Ricky Reed’s solar plexus as he lay on the ground, Reed received a yellow for his part in the affray, which appeared to be for holding the Berkswell man off the ball just seconds earlier. Now down to 14, Berkswell’s forward power didn’t appear to be in any way diminished and their pack drove over for two more tries to post a 21‐0 score line after 32 minutes. Meanwhile OL’s full back Ben Wiles had to retire from the action injured, to be replaced by brother Scott making a welcome return for his first taste of league action for some time With their left wing banished to the sin bin just before half time, Berkswell were playing with 13 men for the early minutes of the second period and OLs were now playing down the slope with the brisk, diagonal wind in their favour. They got on to the score board within three minutes of the re‐start when quick hands took the ball left then right, setting up a half chance for Simon Bayliss which he took with aplomb from some 40 metres out. The score was tainted by another piece of unsavoury action when Jon Bean, retrieving the ball for the conversion, was allegedly caught by the elbow of the B&B touch judge as he ran towards the posts. He recovered after attention but missed the conversion; and the referee, not having viewed the incident fully, advised the touch judge to hand over the flag. For the next thirty minutes OLs took the game to their opponents, the pack having now gained parity with their opposite numbers in all phases. But Berkswell’s tactics appeared to be to concede penalties when OLs threatened as the count against them must have been approaching 15 over this period. The tactics worked as they regularly disrupted OL’s momentum without suffering any yellow cards. But their defence must also take much of the credit as OLs, now with the bulk of possession and territory, failed to capitalise on the chances they created until the 27th minute when quick line out possession and good combination play saw flanker Andy Orbinson go over under the posts, Bean converting for 12‐21. It was to be the home side who had the last word and as the final whistle approached, their left wing fielded a wayward clearance and waltzed through a whole posse of statuesque defenders to touch down. To add the final indignity, the Berkswell pack heaved over OL’s line for another pushover try deep into injury time. This reverse ended any lingering ambition OLs may have had of reaching 2nd position and the promotion play off, although it is exceptionally tight at the top with just 3 points covering the five teams from 2nd down to 6th. OLs will entertain Droitwich on Saturday, currently in 3rd and with genuine aspirations to make that second spot. Report by Bill Wallis

End of Season Thanks On the ‘Welcome’ page we were happy to acknowledge the contribution to the Club made by the members, organisers and caterers of the Griffin Club. But there are others who beaver away on match days, often with little thanks or recognition. First among those equals is Arwel Jones who always ensures that our pitches are freshly marked out for every match, and a picture they look too. Almost all the programmes sold this year have been through the hands of Jackson Hughes, who doubles up as cleaner for gym and dressing rooms. Many thanks, Jackson. This programme, and two of the previous three, has been printed by Chris Tew, who volunteered his services as a printer several weeks ago and in so doing has helped us to keep our costs down – and this as well as running the bar so well, with some very capable helpers. One of those is Helen, who has also been preparing team meals for a sizeable slice of this season, and her efforts have been very much appreciated. For years we have been asking the question ‘ what would we do without Terry Wootton?’ Well, we have never had to answer it, as Terry unfailingly has the kit ready for all teams
every Saturday. A similar question could be asked about Ray Todd! Ray is the man who assembles all this writer’s ramblings into a coherent form so that the programme is always ready for the printers. This in addition to the constant updating of the website, a library of photographic images that must run into many thousands by now – and who works with Mike Lewis to ensure that all our stats are always accurate and up to date (important that one, as players can become very sensitive if they think we have missed a try here, a penalty goal there!) The next in our team of Saturday heroes is physio Suzanne Cox. She rarely misses a 1st XV match, gets on with her job cheerfully and efficiently and is always available to talk to players about their (sometimes mythical) bumps and bruises. In the same way that our game cannot be played without a referee, so it would be without highly competent and completely unbiased touch judges. We have two, David Eales and David Anderson who have clocked up quite a few miles along the touch lines. Thanks to everyone for their efforts.

Midlands 2 and Elsewhere Since our last programme was published, Barkers Butts have tied up the Midlands 2 West (S) league title, and worthy champions they are too. But the fight for the runners up spot, and the chance for promotion via the play‐offs, is going right down to the wire and any one of four clubs could claim it today. Looking on with great interest to see who emerges from the pack are Old Saltleians, of Midlands 2 West (North) who tied up that position in their league some weeks ago and who will feature in the play‐offs for the third consecutive season. They are likely to enjoy home advantage in the play‐off if they win their last game – only Berkswell of the contenders in our league can equal their games won record. Stoke on Trent were confirmed as champions of Mids W 2 (N) a while back and with two games to play still have a 100% league record. However their hold on the RFU Intermediate Cup was broken when they lost their North v Midlands semi‐final to Ilkley by 24‐20 two weeks ago. Ilkley will meet East Grinstead in the Twickenham final. No Midlands sides managed to progress beyond the semi‐finals of the national cups, Stourbridge Lions and Old Wheatleyans both being beaten by northern opponents in the Senior Vase and Junior Vase respectively. It wasn’t necessary to employ the services of an expert to predict that
Rugby Lions would claim the championship of National 3 Midlands and with a win against Hinckley today they will have done it with a 100% record. What is good to see is Dudley Kingswinford confirming second place and a play off to go up to National 2 against either Rosendale or Chester ‐ and achieved with largely the team we met last season. In Midlands 2 East (South), Lutterworth have all but claimed the promotion play‐off place. They currently sit in second place, eight points ahead of Bugbrooke, each club having two games to play. Sadly, Rugby Welsh are doomed to relegation from Midlands 4 West (S) with just one game left.
