gram Background and Rationale
During the 1970s, the UP College of Medicine underwent revisions in its curriculum which paved the way for the formation of the sevenyear program, integrating premedical years with medicine proper This program was named the INTARMED (Integrated Liberal Arts and Medicine), with its first class of students during the academic year, 1982-1983.
This program was made to provide students exposure to the humanities, synchronizing them with basic and clinical disciplines. With this, the aim of the program is to produce physicians who have the scientific competence to practice Medicine and the social conscience to motivate them to continuously seek ways and means of improving medical service to all levels of Philippine society.
Program Details
It consists of two years of pre-medical courses (Learning Unit I – II), four years of regular medical studies (Learning Unit III – VI), and one year of clinical internship (Learning Unit VII) Students who enter LU I are considered direct entrants while students who enter LU III are considered lateral entrants.

Return Service Agreement (RSA)
Under the Return Service Agreement of UPCM, a graduate: shall complete their 3 years of return service obligation work within 5 years from their graduation shall practice in any part of the Philippines, in any of the following for as long as it is in their capacity as a physician:

Differential and Integral Calculus are the focus of Math 105
The batch will be divided into different groups with each group having assigned doctors as mentors The mentors will help the students learn about themselves, the patients, and the community at large
Basic principles in physical fitness, health, and well-being are the focus of PE FPF.
NSTP deals with the issues and problems of the community, particularly healthcare and public health.
Principles of organic chemistry, such as nomenclature, mechanisms of action, and structures and properties of compounds, will be discussed in Chem 33.
The main foci of Bio 126 are anatomy and physiology of animals The different organ systems and physiological processes of animals will be tackled.
Math 101 discusses probability and the basics of statistics with emphasis on the Philippine healthcare system
This course examines the life and works of Rizal, including his ideologies, his travels, and the people he met along the way.
The core purpose of SAS 1 is to understand the self by examining the interaction of biological, psychological, and socio-cultural dimensions
Wika 1 gives importance to language, especially the native and Filipino languages, and its role in community development.
This course talks about the theories and frameworks of communication in various contexts and levels of human interaction

STS 1 explores how science and technology are utilized in society, especially under the context of the Philippines

What college is the INTARMED program under?
The Integrated Liberal Arts and Medicine (INTARMED) program is under the University of the Philippines – College of Medicine (UPCM). However, prior to entering medical school in LU 3, LU 1 and LU 2 would require students to take certain subjects – some being general education (GE) classes – under the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).
Which Learning Units (LUs) are under preparatory medicine?
The first two LUs are considered as the preparatory medicine years Subjects and practices vital to the studying and practicing of medicine in LU 3 onwards will be taught to students during these two academic years. Where are INTARMED classes conducted?
During LU 1 and LU 2, most on-site classes are conducted at the Padre Faura building, either at the Rizal Hall (RH) or the Gusaling Andres Bonifacio (GAB) Some GEs might conduct classes inside the Pedro Gil building. From LU 3 onwards – with some classes from LU 1 and LU 2 like NSTP and IPC – most classes will be conducted at the Henry Sy building located inside the Pedro Gil side of the campus. When do we graduate and get our diploma?
For the Bachelor’s degree in Basic Medical Sciences:
INTARMED students are eligible for graduation once they have satisfactorily passed and completed all requirements from LUs 1 to 4. Additionally, those with computed General Weighted Averages (GWA) that have met the criteria for certain awards – particularly with Latin honors – will also be recognized during graduation The ceremony will be held after LU 5
For the Doctor of Medicine degree:
Once students have received their Bachelor’s degree, they are further eligible for graduation and are given the degree for the Doctor of Medicine after they have satisfactorily passed and completed all requirements – those given during the medicine proper and internship years within LUs 3 to 7 – from the College of Medicine for the INTARMED program.

The RSA requires students of the College of Medicine to: (1) serve in health care facilities in the Philippines for a minimum of 3 to 5 years and (2) obtain their medical license within 2 years after their graduation from the UPCM

What is the NMAT and when do we take it?
The National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) is a prerequisite examination for medical school applicants in the Philippines It is a requirement for student applicants interested in studying medicine, especially at the UPCM. For INTARMED students, it is highly recommended to apply and take the NMAT within the LU 2 academic year or as long as it is taken in any such time prior to LU 3 enrolment Although taking it is a requirement, there is no target or cut-off score needed for INTARMED students to obtain.
What is the tuition fee per Learning Unit?
Student’s tuition shall be free for LUs 1 to 4 From LU 5 onwards, the tuition fee is standardized to be at around PHP 50,000 per semester
