ocated along U.S. 60, northwest of Phoenix, Surprise is one of the fastest growing communities in the U.S. Today, Surprise is a 74-squaremile city on the move. Hike or Bike to a Rare Desert Waterfall
Hike or bike to a rare desert waterfall at White Tank Regional Park located on the western edge of Surprise. Waterfall Trail is a very popular and easy hike, suitable for the entire family. Hit the greens at one or all of Surprise’s championship golf courses. Cimarron at Sun City Grand, was designed by Greg Nash. Play tennis, racquetball and table tennis at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex. They have leagues as well as drop-in tennis. From time to time you can also catch professional exhibition tennis here. A one-stop-shop for family entertainment, Uptown Alley has bowling, laser tag and games, as well as a full service restaurant and night life opportunities for the adult crowd. Be sure to check out Enjoy your visit to the Wild World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park or take the family to one Surprise, Arizona of two pick-your-own citrus farms. Spend a day at Maricopa County’s northwest regional library. The $5.5 million, 20,000-square-foot library features a gift shop, and many public access flat screen computers and separate adult, teen and child areas with greenhouse reading rooms overlooking a five-acre lake. Be sure to visit the 12’x78’ mosaic that depicts the history of Surprise. The inaugural Surprise Fiesta Grande was held in October 2014 and featured live music, authentic Mexican food, festive beverages, dancing, a car show and a kid zone with a piñata plaza and interactive games.

There’s also roaming entertainment such as Renaissance Festival folk at Surprise Community Park. Families can picnic among the face painters and balloon twisters or purchase food from vendors. Most attractions are free.

Since its opening in August 2007, the complex has received numerous awards. Most recently, it was named the 2008 Outstanding Facility of the Year by the USTA. The complex hosts various professional events throughout the year, including the Outback Champion Series tour, a USTA Pro Circuit event, and many USTA regional and sectional events. Here’s our overview of the various ways you can buy spring training tickets, from safe and early to speculative and down the road. To begin with, you need to know that there’s no one date when all MLB teams place spring training tickets on sale. Each team sets a sale date, sometimes with very little warning.
Working with Teams
Buying a ticket directly from a team will usually be the cheapest and most convenient option. With popular teams, the selection will be limited. Every team sells spring season tickets-bought mostly by locals and snowbirds-and the best tickets in any spring ballpark are controlled by these season ticket holders. The MLB teams are also set up best to sell massive amounts of tickets in a short amount of time, as the beginning of spring training ticket sales can best be described as a feeding frenzy. There are four ways to order spring training tickets directly from MLB teams: via telephone, via the Internet, in person, and via the U.S. Mail. We’ll describe each. TELEPHONE Most tickets are sold via phone sales. This can be a frustrating way of doing things, as you’re likely to encounter some busy signals or long wait times when tickets first go on sale. You’ll also pay a ticketing fee for the convenience of buying tickets. INTERNET Every team sells spring training tickets via the Internet. There are some pluses and minuses to this approach. The Maricopa Trail
The Maricopa Trail offers visitors to Surprise a vast area of Sonoran Desert and mountain hiking with easy access. It lies at the far west of Surprise and connects to White Tank Mountain Regional Park, which features an additional 25 miles of excellent shared-use trails.
Maricopa County is home to one of the largest regional park systems in the United States. Ten parks in the system circle the Phoenix metropolitan area, preserving approximately 120,000 acres.

Hiking
The Maricopa Trail is an unfinished 242-mile (389 km) trail located within Maricopa County and connecting the major regional and municipal parks in and around the Phoenix metropolitan area. A loop trail encircling much of the urbanized area, the trail also consists of four spurs that will connect the loop with outlying mountain parks in the region. The trail crosses the U.S. 60 in Surprise and approximately 15 miles of the trail run west of the Loop 303. Conceptualized in 1997 by the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department, the Maricopa Trail was envisioned as a pedestrian beltway that would connect nine of the department’s ten regional parks, linking them with the city of Phoenix’s South Mountain Park and encouraging their use by the area’s residents. The trail incorporates existing portions of the Sun Circle Trail, the National Trail in South Mountain Park, portions of the trails within White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Cave Creek Regional Park and pathways already developed along the McMicken corridor in Surprise. Construction on new segments of the trail began in 2006 and has brought the total length of the existing corridors to approximately 80 miles (130 km).

bout the Petroglyphs of White Tank Mountains Ancient Arizonans pecked hundreds of figures and symbols on the rock faces of the White Tank Mountains. Some may approach 10,000 years-old All have withstood sun, rain, and vandals for 700 to 800 years or more. Visitors are not permitted to make "tombstone rubbings" of the petroglyphs. It doesn't work and it will erode the dark areas, making the petroglyph dimmer. Look at and photograph these figures and symbols of history but please do not touch the petroglyphs because skin oils can also damage them.

Getting There: From Bell Road or Grand Ave, take AZ-303 south to Peoria Ave. Turn west for 1/2 mile. Turn south on Cotton Ln. for one mile. Turn west on Olive Ave. for 4 miles to the White Tank Mountain Regional Park entrance. Hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sun - Thurs and 10 p.m. Fri & Sat. White Tank Mountain Regional Park offers approximately 25 miles of excellent shared-use trails, ranging in length from 0.9 mile to 7.9 miles and difficulty from easy to strenuous. Overnight backpacking with a permit is allowed in established backcountry campsites. Day hikes can provide some breathtaking views of the mountains and panoramas of the Valley below. Horseback and mountain bike riders are welcome, although caution is stressed as some of the trails may be extremely difficult. In addition, there are 2.5 miles of pedestrian-only trails. These include two short trails that are hard-surfaced and barrier free. Waterfall Trail is barrier-free for 5/10 of a mile. The handicap accessible portion now ends about 1/10 of a mile past Petroglyph Plaza. The short loop of Black Rock Trail, which is about 1/2 mile long, begins at Ramada 4. Trail Name

Ford Canyon Trail
Getting There: From Bell Road or Grand Ave, take AZ-303 south to Peoria Ave. Turn west for 1/2 mile. Turn south on Cotton Ln. for one mile. Turn west on Olive Ave. for 4 miles to the White Tank Mountain Regional Park entrance. Fees: There is a fee per car. Annual passes are available. Hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sun - Thurs and 10 p.m. Fri & Sat. This wide path is lined with river rocks – placed there long ago by prison inmates. It is very easy to follow. There are a couple of junctions where convening trails make a hodgepodge connection. The path generally follows the edge of Ford Canyon and gradually angles up into a side canyon that starts displaying white granite bedrock tanks – the range’s namesakes. These tanks contain varying amounts of water accumulated from previous rainfalls. The gradual climb along Ford Canyon brings the western Length: 5.8 Round Trip part of Phoenix into view. The Elevation Change: +-900’ higher you climb on the trail, Elevation: 1500 ft. the closer you get to the main Difficulty: Moderate stream bed. Take a walk over to the exposed granite and see if you can find any water in the tanks. Look for remnants of old rock dams and water catchment basins. Also look for stone fencing and small corrals, which are remnants of cattle grazing days. Waterfall Trail: Leave White Tank Mountain Road at 1.65 miles from the entrance taking Waterfall Canyon Road to the left then a very short spur road. The trail leaves this branch road at a sign 2.0 miles from the park entrance near the picnic ramada and comfort station #6. Total ascent 180’.
Goat Camp Trail
Getting There: From Bell Road or Grand Ave, take AZ-303 south to Peoria Ave. Turn west for 1/2 mile. Turn south on Cotton Ln. for one mile. Turn west on Olive Ave. for 4 miles to the White Tank Mountain Regional Park entrance. Goat Camp trailhead is just inside the park entrance off Black Canyon Dr. Fees: There is a fee per car. Annual passes are available. Hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sun - Thurs and 10 p.m. Fri & Sat. The trail heads due west for approx 4 miles along Goat Canyon. The trail starts at 1500’, goes to 3150’. Reflections of Surprise by Niki Glen Northwest Regional Library, 16089 N Bullard Ave. Reflections of Surprise is a community art project. Niki Glen, worked with a team of generous volunteer residents and local artisans to design and make the clay, glass and metal pieces that comprise the mural and tell the story of Surprise. The mural is filled with representations of family, community and recreation. Local flora and fauna are also featured. The oranges, roses and cotton designs pay tribute to the city’s agricultural past.

Art Experiences in Surprise Second Sundays in the Park – This free city-sponsored concert and entertainment series is offered the second Sunday of the month during the spring and fall. Surprise City Hall – The Surprise Arts and Cultural Advisory Commission selects rotating art displays and some permanent pieces of the city’s art collection located in the first floor lobby and hallway of Surprise City Hall, 16000 N. Valley Vista Performing Arts Center – Valley Vista High School Performing Arts Center (PAC) is a state-of-the-art performing arts center operated by the Dysart Unified School District. This venue offers a roomy lobby, 1,300 plush seats, professional BOSE sound, and theatrical lighting. The PAC plays host to a variety of arts and cultural events. For more information, please visit: Valley Vista Performing Arts Center West Valley Arts HQ – The Arts HQ consists of 2,500 square feet of indoor gallery space plus an outdoor courtyard. The Learning Tree by Joe Tyler Northwest Regional Library, 16089 N Bullard Ave. A 27-foot welded tree shading a 10-foot by 14-foot book and floweradorned benches that sits on the front lawn of the Northwest Regional Library.
Catitude Art Gallery – Catitude provides artist show and studio space, guest artists each month, special events and a variety of art forms. Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts - A stateof-the-art 600 seat theatre dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational richness of Wickenburg and our surrounding communities. Desert Caballeros Museum – This museum aims to collect and preserve the history, learning, lore and mementos incident to the development of Wickenburg and the Arizona Territory.
West Valley Conservatory of Ballet – WVCB is a nonprofit organization that strives to provide the community with classical ballet training. Surprise Pops Band – This band plays free concerts in the West Valley, including in Surprise. The association also maintains WHAM West Gallery, a beautiful showroom for juried art shows and special events. www.wham-art.org We are the Past, Present and the Future of Surprise by WHAM Staff & Teen WHAM Artists Bicentennial Park, 15705 N. Nash St. This tagged restroom had been a problem to the Surprise Police Department and the community for a long time. The police were given a grant by the Arts Commission and WHAM Arts Organization came up with a design. Teens, taggers and artists painted the mural. It is now on the AZ Commission of Arts list of art that prevents crime.

Quilt of Life by Connie Whitlock & Citizens of Surprise Surprise Senior Center 15832 N. Hollyhock St. Twenty-three seniors created tiles that look like quilt squares. Their names are on the squares that come together to create the mosaic 9 ft. x5 ft. ceramic quilt, which is mounted in the gather room at the senior center.

Always There, Always Ready - by Joe Tyler Fire Station #301, 16750 N. Village Dr. The large bronze obelisk is dedicated to the city's firefighters. It includes the motto and many related symbols. It is located in the Original Town Site at the site of the first fire station in Surprise. Totem by Laurel Delaney City Hall, 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza The Totem rises from a base of Grand Canyon Agate and spirals upward through colorful abstract representations of emergence, growth and the struggles of humankind. In keeping with these ancient themes, the artist paints the imagery on her forms with encaustic wax cooked up from melting together beeswax, dammae resin from trees and pigments.
