Background I grew up in Bangkok, Thailand. I remember the day in fifth grade I learned beauty secrets from my grandmother, who made scrubs, masks and conditioners using ingredients indigenous to the country, like turmeric, raw honey, tamarind, and tropical fruits. She was an alchemist and would make her own creams in the kitchen using traditional beauty knowledge. As the oldest of three girls, I had plenty of girl talk while I was growing up. I was the first of us to develop, which means my sisters came to me with lots of questions. We talked about everything from taking care of our skin to shaving our legs. One day, my mother told me that when she was my age she treated breakouts by baking in the sun and using the strongest drugstore formulas. She was convinced they would heal her skin faster. She was so wrong. My grandmother molded me into a person with an interest in natural beauty. I routinely enjoy being with my grandmother in her kitchen. I remember that every weekend she would do a facial mask, foot scrub and body scrub for me and my sisters. That’s why I want to devote myself to a thesis to teach tween girls about the skin they are in. I want to guide them to start taking care of their skin. It’s all about prevention and starting young.

Opportunity gap The more research I did, the more I realized that there is a need for better designed and aesthetically pleasing education materials on care for skin, hair and nails. There was a lack of that in the books, posters and websites that I came across. The materials out there were text heavy and hard to read. I decided that my thesis would be the opposite of these things; Little Bird Box would provide fun facts, friendly, visually appealing and easy-tounderstand educational materials on skin, hair and nails. I felt that creating a visually appealing educational system would help tween girls want to build a good habit of taking care of their skin, hair and nails. Whether they are feeling ready for puberty or a little unsure of what’s happening inside them, this project is here to help tween girls along the way. We’ll talk about all the changes they can expect and how to deal with them. Whether they want to know how to deal with acne or sunburn, I’ll help them get to the bottom of things and explore common rumors and myths. I also answer questions from real girls about how to handle their skin, hair and nails. Your body is an amazing thing, and understanding how it works will help you be healthy and happy.

Finding monthly subscription service I found inspiration in monthly subscription boxes of beauty products, jewelry, clothing, games, baby products, food, household items, books and crafts. Most of their business was focused on sending handpicked product samples every month, customized just for customers’ needs. I found that this idea of monthly subscription boxes is interesting to me, but there are no other companies focused on natural beauty for tween girls. I started focusing my idea on making an adorable package filled with fun facts, quizzes, supplies and instructions for DIY natural beauty products that tween girls can make on their own or with their parents. Tween girls will love starting good habits of taking care of their skin, hair and nails. We deliver to their doorstep seasonally. And so the process began.

Target audiences I first began with a broad audience, but later narrowed it to a specific group of people. My target audience is tween girls between eight to twelve years old. My audience also extends to anyone who takes care of tween girls, including parents and nannies. I wanted to focus on parents and children who live in the United States, and who have the time to enjoy an educational book together. I thought this would be a good audience because parents want to make healthy decisions for their children, and they want their children to make healthy decisions as well.

Research and brainstorming When I started this project, I had little knowledge about children. To solve this, I read children’s picture books, articles on the skin, hair and nails, websites, and skin guidebooks by dermatologists. The more research I did, the more I realized I needed to expand my topic from just an article or text book to something more appealing to children. Once I decided that all of my deliveries would include a children’s book, I started researching successful children’s books to get more inspiration for my visual style.

Visual inspiration From almost the beginning of this project, I was inspired by children’s books and illustrations. I thought that illustrations would complement my project well. I came across some children’s visual guidebooks that were visually awesome, and knew that a similar stylistic approach would work well with my thesis. Mike Lowery and Julia Rothman were huge illustration influences. I love Julia Rothman’s playful characters and cheerful use of color. I have always admired Mike Lowery’s clean and simple sketches.

Sketching and practicing I love to draw and always carry a sketchbook with me. This thesis helped me strengthen my skills in illustration. In the beginning, I did not know what kind of style I wanted. Later, when I figured out the style I wanted, what I drew on paper and put into the computer did not look good. To solve this, I just practiced different styles of drawing, and when I created something I liked, I tried to make it better. It was a repetitive process of exploring and practicing until I found a style that worked well with my project.

Logo development Wanting my logo to pair well with the overall aesthetic of my thesis, I decided to work on my logo after I determined the visual style and specific content of my project. While developing the logo, I knew I wanted to keep it simple, yet also reflect the character of Robin from my thesis topic. Robin is the main character who teaches readers about the skin they are in. She is there to guide them to start taking care of their skin.

Little Bird Box’s guide book Robin’s beauty guide for girls is a tween’s guidebook to safe & natural care for skin, hair and nails. Included is information on how to deal with acne, sun burn, and how to care for skin from head to toe. Find ideas for taking care of your body and pampering yourself with potions you can make at home. Your skin, hair and nails will thank you! The book is meant to be fun to read and look at, but also educational. It is heavily visual, so it works as a guide that parents and tweens can quickly reference or look through when they have time. This book can be used as a tool for parents to educate their children about skin they are in!
