We would like to personally invite you to our family’s 42nd Annual Performance Tested Charolais Bull Sale. Thank you for taking the time to review our program and the bulls we have to offer this year.
We trust that our customers and friends in the industry are enjoying the ride, with prices that we’ve never seen before, and we’ll take it! It’s the perfect time to swap out those older bulls and get paid well for them. As we prepare to market our offering to the industry, we are confident in their genetic ability to bring you profits in all stages of the production cycle. This is reflected in the confidence our customers have shown through the years, and once again 89% of the bulls in last year’s sale went to repeat buyers.
Our catalogue is an honest reflection of our program; having a long-standing reputation for high gaining, high quality feeder cattle. Although performance testing has been our focus over the years, it comes secondary to producing sound, functional cattle with longevity. You will see many bull comments that include mention of their mother being an “Elite Dam” and “Platinum Dam”. These females have been ranked in our cattle records system for their lifetime production. It is exciting and rewarding to see the longevity in their genetics. You can be confident that the bulls you select have top quality genetics not only in performance but also in longevity.
The bulls are catalogued in birth order and will be sold in the same order. This is not your typical purebred sale with the top end stacked at the front of a sale order. We are very proud of the fact that these bulls have the depth of quality and performance, front to back, to sell in this format.

Health: Bulls have been strictly culled for structural soundness. A complete vaccination program has been done as well as a recent Ivomec treatment. All bulls have passed a semen test and breeding soundness evaluation prior to the sale.

Warranty: We offer a program that demonstrates our commitment to our customers. Should you have a problem with a bull, contact Rawes Ranches directly and we will handle it immediately. Two options: Basic and Extended warranty are available.
Basic – 30 Day assures that your bull(s) remain in satisfactory condition until bulls are delivered. An additional cost of 2% will be added to your invoice on any bull that remains at the ranch after sale day, unless proof of alternate insurance is provided.
Extended – Breeding Season starts on sale day and will last for 7 months protecting your investment during the most critical time - Breeding Season, for a cost of 7%.
Right To Semen: Rawes Ranches Ltd. retains the right to draw semen on any bull sold for our in-herd use only.

Bull Viewing / Video Sale
We recommend customers try to view the bulls prior to the sale and make a healthy list of bulls that will suit their needs. Bulls will be available for viewing at the sale barn, and will be sorted in groups of four. Groups will be sorted to complement one another genetically, in performance and style. This presort is a unique and great opportunity to assist customers with their bull selection. During the sale, bulls will be sold individually on video rather than entering the ring.

"Rawes Ranches implements a comprehensive herd health program developed with Lacombe Veterinary Centre. The ranch utilizes Herdtrax for individual animal record keeping and uses the data to make evidence based decisions to enhance ranch performance. The bulls are fully vaccinated with a modified live respiratory and 8way clostridial vaccines and receive an internal/external parasite control program. A breeding soundness evaluation, including semen testing, is performed on all the bulls."

The No Nonsense PROGRAM
Rawes Ranches was established near Strome, Alberta in the mid-forties by Herman and Elaine Rawe. In the early fifties, the cattle industry moved toward more feeding of cattle for the slaughter market, and our family responded with an expansion of our commercial Hereford-based cow herd. That is where our focus began; to raise cattle that excel in the auction barn, the feedlot, and at the meat counter.
Always looking for a better way to do things, Herman started using Charolais bulls in 1957 and was a founding member of the Canadian Charolais Association. From the beginning, our feedlot involvement and fat cattle marketing, alongside building a registered Charolais cow herd, kept our ideas in focus. This naturally led to a “No Nonsense” Program founded on COMMON SENSE, CONSISTENCY, AND PROFITABILITY. Today, this focus remains the same.
Simply put, the cattle must meet the needs of the marketplace they were designed for. Rawe Ranch cattle are produced and sold with honesty and integrity. We don’t have banners, ribbons, or trophies; we have a long-standing program, satisfied customers, and functional cattle that excel in all areas of production having been proven in the industry.
All sale bulls are ONE IRON, bred and raised on the ranch. We have personally attended to our Charolais breeding and herd management for FIFTY-THREE YEARS. The purebred herd was established in 1972 and today undergoes annual evaluation and replacement by our own females sired by our own ranch-raised bulls without the possibility of setbacks from outside genetics. In doing so we have CONCENTRATED OUR GENETICS in the areas we feel are most important: feet and longevity, temperament, performance, and carcass quality.
The cows CALVE ON PASTURE during May and June. Today, 27% of our breeding herd are 8 years and older, 57% are between 3 and 7 years, and 16% are first-calvers. The consistency in our program is proven by these older productive cows that have not been pampered, never had their feet trimmed, and calved unassisted every year. There is no distinction in management practices between our purebred and commercial cow herds.
A large herd and RIGID CULLING PROGRAM ensure that only the top end of our productive animals continue in the program leading to steady advancement year over year. We don’t sell replacement females or proven cows from the herd. They either work for us, or they don’t work at all, they’re functional or they go! Yearling heifers not selected for breeding and bulls not selected for sale are finished for harvest under our feeding and management.
Each year we obtain performance and grading information to EVALUATE AND IMPROVE our genetics. We have always strived for growthy cattle; however, we realized very early on that performance achieved through growth alone (high frame score) was not sustainable. For growth to have any value it must be combined with rapid fleshability and the PRODUCTION OF RED MEAT. This understanding is the foundation of our program and has developed a genetic package with proven performance in all stages of the production cycle.
Our bulls are raised under the same principles as the cow herd. They are May-June born, calved on pasture, weaned in November, and undergo a full 15 months of evaluation to sell between 18-20 months of age after they have MATURED AND ARE READY TO GO TO WORK. They aren’t pushed to sell as yearlings.
All bulls are developed for our annual bull sale; we don’t sell by private treaty nor consign to other sales. We believe in letting our cattle sell in the COMPETITIVE MARKET and letting you, the commercial cattleman, be the judge.

Animals with herd letters AAA are from Triple AAA Charolais, Surrey B.C. The Triple AAA herd was established by James. V. Rawe, and carried on by his son Dan Rawe. We had the opportunity to purchase this herd from Dan in 2017. It contained several unique pedigrees along with our own Rawe Ranch influence.
Performance Information Explained
In order to use this data to its full potential, it is important to have an understanding of the terminology and collection methods. Take the opportunity to become familiar with the information below, so you are able to make a better-informed decision about the bull that will fit your needs.
BW The recorded birth weight of the calf when born.
SC Bulls have been scrotal measured January 2025 and all will sell with a valid semen certificate.
FS Frame Score has been calculated based on age and hip height to assist customers with online and sight unseen purchases for situations where in-person appraisals are not possible. Call us if you have any questions about frame score.
WT The live weight of bulls taken in mid January 2025 to be used in combination with frame score to assist customers with online and sight unseen purchases.
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs)
EPDs incorporate the animal's individual performance, genetic testing, as well as the performance and genetic testing of its relatives. The EPDs available on these bulls have been provided by the Canadian Charolais Association and can not be compared between breeds.
CE Expected difference in Calving Ease of progeny. A larger number indicates easier calving (less assistance).
BW Expected difference in Birth Weight of progeny, expressed in lbs. A larger BW EPD indicates heavier calves at birth.
WW Expected difference in Weaning Weight of progeny, expressed in lbs. A larger WW EPD indicates heavier calves at weaning.
YW Expected difference in Yearling Weight of progeny, expressed in lbs. A larger number indicates heavier calves at one year of age.
CW Expected difference in Carcass Weight of progeny, expressed in lbs. A larger number indicates heavier carcasses.
REA Expected difference in Rib-Eye area of progeny, expressed in square inches. A larger number indicates bigger rib-eye muscle.
MRB Expected difference in Marbling Score (quality grade) of progeny, expressed in marbling score units (MSU). A larger number indicates more marbling.
TSI CCA's new Terminal Sire Index expresses the difference in expected $ value of progeny when the progeny is retained through to slaughter. A larger value indicates more expected $ profit.

TRUE GENETIC POTENTIAL
And it all starts at calving time when data is first collected on the animal. Our second-calvers and mature cow herd calve on grass in May through June. We like to calve cows on carry over grass (barring a drought). The cows are moderate framed “Charolais” cows. After coming through the winter and into calving season, they are in their working clothes; not carrying a lot of extra flesh and weighing roughly 1500-1600 pounds. It’s the norm for these cows to have calves weighing 100-110 pounds. A lot of that weight is in extra length. We are not ashamed to print what the scale reads. We believe the shape of the calf is, for the most part, more important than the weight of the calf. Rarely do we ever bring a cow in unless it’s for malpresentation. Like most operations today, we simply don’t have time for unnecessary problems.

The long-time Rawe Ranch slogan, “The Ranch where performance is no accident!” demonstrates a commitment to performance testing and encompasses all stages of production. While producing sound, functional cattle that are pleasing to the eye, we are continually working towards superior performance. Generations of carcass information have been measured and considered to make breeding decisions in our herd. Utilizing ultrasound and grading information allows us to breed by design, not by accident!
Grading information on 11 loads of 2023 born ranch sired steers and heifers show over 92.7% graded Prime/AAA and dressed 60.3% (both steers and heifers). As marbling trends higher in the industry so does the potential reduction in other areas of carcass quality. We have maintained a balance, and designed a herd with superior carcass genetics that is backed by the actual harvested data!
