Ravenscroft faculty use Canvas to share course content, communicate with students, post feedback and grades for individual assignments, and streamline access to digital tools. Students will access all course content and turn in most assignments through Canvas. Parents have access to Canvas as “observers” to view what is happening in their children’s courses.

The safety and security of our students, community and campus are of the utmost importance to Ravenscroft. Our Director of Protective Services oversees all aspects of campus access, safety and security. Ravenscroft uses a keycard security system for all academic buildings on campus. Parents, volunteers and guests are required to check in at the front office of the Lower School, Middle School, Upper School and Keim Center when visiting those academic buildings.

Students are encouraged to be in their classrooms in Holding Hall Lower School starting at 7:45 a.m. to prepare for the day. School hours for Kindergarten through fifth grades are 8 a.m.-3 p.m. PreKindergarten is dismissed at noon. PreKindergarten Plus is dismissed at 3 p.m.

Community Service

20 HOURS

Amount of community service required each year for Upper School students

Lower School and Middle School

Lower School and Middle School students participate in community service within their respective divisions during the school year as part of Ravenscroft’s curriculum.

Upper School

Upper School students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service each year.

At least 10 of these hours must be fulfilled through volunteering with civic, religious or community nonprofit agencies involved in outreach and service activities, especially those that aid members of our community who are less fortunate. The remaining hours can be completed on the Ravenscroft campus with certain stipulations. Students can begin logging community service hours the summer prior to their freshman year.

Hours should be recorded on a Community Service Form and be signed by a representative of the agency offering the community service. These forms should be turned in to the Upper School to receive credit.

Lunches and Snacks

Students in PreK and Kindergarten bring snacks and lunches from home and eat with their classmates in their center.

Students in first through 12th grades may bring their lunch from home* or buy their lunch from the Dining Hall using their MySchoolBucks account (myschoolbucks.com). Money can be added to the account online and in the RavenZone. More information about the school meal plan will be included in the Opening of School email shared in early August.

Students in first through 12th grades will enjoy an all-inclusive lunch in their respective dining halls. This “eat as much as you should” model allows students to return for additional servings while promoting healthy choices and volume management.

Students are allowed to drink water in their classrooms and are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles to school to remain hydrated throughout the day.

The Olander Center will also offer breakfast for students and families beginning at 7:15 a.m. as well as additional retail items for purchase throughout the day. During breaks, Middle and Upper School students are able to visit the center and purchase snacks and beverages using their MySchoolBucks account. Money can be added to the account online or in the RavenZone, located on the ground floor of the Olander Center. More information about setting up school accounts will be in the Opening of School email shared in early August.

Middle School students are required to follow the school’s Dress Code, which is published in the Middle School Handbook. Athletes should wear “Game Day Dress” on days they have games (both home and away).

Dress Down and Spirit Week Dress

During Spirit Week and other special occasions, themed clothing may be worn. On Dress Down Days, students may wear athletic shorts and sweatpants. They may also wear hats indoors. Other dress code expectations listed above still apply.

The RavenZone School Store

RavenZone is located on the ground floor of the Olander Center for Student Life at the A. E. Finley Activity Center, near Lot H, and sells school spirit wear, required Middle and Upper School P.E. uniforms, gifts and novelty items, and a limited amount of school supplies. Visit the RavenZone online for more information.

The RavenZone is open most regular school days. Lower School students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian when visiting the school store. The RavenZone has special hours prior to the opening of school and on teacher conference days.

Fine Arts

Beginning in Lower School, Ravenscroft students are offered many opportunities to participate in our fine arts programs. Lower School students enjoy visual arts, a full general music curriculum and the opportunity to participate in drama productions, band, choir, strings ensembles and private instruction. Many courses and extracurricular options are available to Middle and Upper School students. Some require auditions.

Performance Attire For Band, Choir And Strings

Fittings for performance attire are held prior to the start of school. Please reach out to Elisabeth McChesney to learn more. Upper School women wear a formal black gown and shoes (choir also wears jewelry). Upper School men wear a tuxedo and black socks/shoes.

Private Instruction

Ravenscroft employs many talented instructors who provide private music instruction to students during their class day. Registration for private lessons begins in May and ends in early August.

Our private lessons are on a first-come, first-served basis and fill up quickly.

Instruments included are:

n violin (first grade)

n strings (second grade and up)

n piano (first grade and up)

n woodwinds (fourth grade and up)

n brass (fourth grade and up)

n percussion (ninth grade and up)

n and voice (sixth grade and up).

Most lessons are 60, 70 or 80 minutes in length. Depending on grade level or instrument, lessons may be 30 or 45 minutes.

Getting Involved

Parent involvement is one of the hallmarks of the Ravenscroft community, and our parent-led volunteer organizations ensure that there is something for everyone. Every parent/guardian is a member of our Parents’ Association (PA) and pays dues yearly when tuition is due. We invite you to learn more about the PA and our other volunteer parent groups: Ravenscroft Athletic Club (RAC), Fine Arts Association (FAA), Global Parent Ambassadors (GPA) and Parents Supporting Diversity and Inclusion (PSDI) on our Parent Involvement webpage. Watch the Ravenscroft Weekly for PA, RAC and FAA meeting dates and additional volunteer opportunities.

We also have affinity groups for parents and students. For parents, we offer PAAAC (Parents of African and African American Children). Parents should contact Lisa Horton, Assistant Head of School for Human Resources and Diversity & Inclusion.

Our Upper School student affinity groups include South Asian Affinity Group, Jewish Affinity Group (JAG), Latino/Hispanic Affinity Group, My Brother’s Keeper, Nubian Queens, and Women’s Affinity Group (WAG). Philanthropy & The Fund For Ravenscroft

The Fund For Ravenscroft is an annual giving fund that allows our school community to allocate additional financial resources to help supplement, support and ignite many key initiatives across campus. Independent schools successfully run their daily operations with funding from tuition and fees. Great independent schools are able to thrive and transform educational experiences because of the impact of these gifts to the annual fund.

Every Fall and Spring a group of Parent Volunteers encourage families across the school to participate in the annual giving campaign. Serving as a Fund For Ravenscroft volunteer is a wonderful way to connect with other families, and as a school we encourage

families to position Ravenscroft as one of their top three philanthropic priorities.

Our Advancement Office is always happy to talk with any family to understand their passions and philanthropic interests, and many of our families leverage these conversations to create generous opportunities for others through their targeted support of specific programs or initiatives.

Giving is just another of the many ways we tie the Ravenscroft Community together.
