Supporting Animals Impacted by Natural Disasters in Indonesia Indonesia is one of the countries in the world that are prone to natural disasters. It is because Indonesia is surrounded by three plates that are actively moving, namely the Indo-Australian Plate, the Eurasian Plate and the Pacific Plate, which can cause very destructive earthquakes. Indonesia is also a country situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire and has many active volcanoes.

Throughout the last centuries there have been major natural disasters occurring in this area, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, etc. The disasters caused the loss of a lot of lives and material loss. When a disaster occurs, we could conclude that the handling of human victims in Indonesia is already well organized. But, how about other victims, such as animals?

When a disaster occurs, animals also really need support, both living and dead, wildlife or domestic animals. When animals perished in disasters, they could become sources of diseases that could harm other creatures, including human beings. While animals which are still alive, they often need food assistance as most people are concentrating on the safety of their own lives and their respective families. During disasters, many animals could also being injured and in critical condition that require medical treatment from veterinarians.

For this reason, since 2010, Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) has formed a team to rescue and support animals victimized by natural disasters. Although the name of the organization is for handling orangutans, but because of the calling of the soul and the experience in working with animals in difficult situation, we decided to establish this team to support other animals impacted by disasters. Since its formation, this team has been directly involved in saving and supporting animals in scores of disasters, such as the eruption of Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta, the eruption of Mount Kelud in Kediri, the eruption of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra, the Pidie Earthquake in Aceh, the eruption of Mount Agung in Bali, the earthquake in Palu in Central Sulawesi and the earthquake in Mamuju in West Sulawesi.

Each disaster and location has different cases and ways to handle the impacted animals. Volcanic disasters usually deal with livestock, such as dairy cows.

However, for the volcanic disaster of Mount Sinabung, there are practically no dairy cows, but there are quite a lot of dogs guarding the orange orchards that need support. For volcanic disasters such as at Mount Merapi, many people at the foot of the mountain do not want to evacuate because they have to take care of their dairy cows. Dairy cows require maximum care, they must be milked every day otherwise it can cause irritation, stress and even death. Whereas the role of dairy cows for the family of farmers is as the main source of income. This is where the animal rescue team has taken an active role by handling the dairy cows so that the people agree to temporarily evacuate during the dangerous period.

Penanggulangan Satwa Korban Bencana Alam di Indonesia

Indonesia termasuk dalam negara-negara di dunia yang rawan akan bencana alam. Ini dikarenakan Indonesia dikepung oleh tiga lempeng bumi yang aktif bergerak yaitu Lempeng Indo-Australian, Eurasia dan Lempeng Pasific yang mana ini dapat menimbulkan potensi gempa bumi yang tidak dapat di prediksi.

Indonesia juga negara yang berada dalam Pasific Ring of Fire (cincin api) yaitu negara yang memiliki gunung berapi aktif yang terhitung banyak.

Sejarah juga mencatat banyak bencana alam yang terjadi di negara ini, seperti gempa bumi, Tsunami, erupsi gunung berapi, tanah longsor, banjir dll. Banyak korban berjatuhan baik korban jiwa maupun materil. Ketika bencana terjadi penanganan korban manusia di Indonesia sudah terorganisir dengan baik, namun bagaimana dengan korban lainnya seperti satwa?

Ketika bencana terjadi satwa juga sangat membutuhkan pertolongan, baik yang masih hidup maupun yang sudah mati, satwa liar ataupun satwa domestik.

Ketika satwa telah mati dapat menjadi sumber penyakit baru. Untuk satwa korban bencana yang masih hidup tentu mereka membutuhkan bantuan pakan dikarenakan semua orang sedang konsentrasi pada diri sendiri dan keluarga masing. Kadangkala ditemukan satwa dengan kondisi kritis dan memerlukan penanganan medis dari dokter hewan.

Untuk itu sejak 2010 Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) membentuk tim penyelamatan satwa korban bencana alam untuk membantu satwa-satwa yang menjadi korban. Meskipun secara nama organisasi adalah untuk penanganan orangutan, namun karena panggilan jiwa dan pengalaman dalam bekerja menye lamatkan satwa di bencana terbentuklah tim ini. Sejak terbentuk tim ini sudah terjun langsung menyelamatkan satwa di beberapa bencana seperti erupsi Gunung Merapi di Yogyakarta, erupsi Gunung Kelud di Kediri, erupsi Gunung Sinabung di Sumatera Utara, Gempa Pidie di Aceh, erupsi Gunung Agung di Bali, gempa bumi di Palu Sulawesi Tengah dan gempa bumi di Mamuju, Sulawesi Barat.

Setiap bencana dan lokasi berbeda-beda kasus dan penanganannya. Bencana gunung api biasanya yang ditangani adalah satwa ternak seperti sapi perah.

Namun untuk bencana gunung api di Gunung Sinabung tidak ada sapi perah namun anjing penjaga kebun-kebun jeruk. Untuk bencana gunung api seperti Gunung Merapi, masyarakat dikaki gunung tidak mau mengungsi karena ada sapi perah yang harus dirawat. Perlu diketahui seperti sapi perah setiap harinya butuh perawatan ekstra, harus setiap hari diperah kalua tidak bisa menyebabkan iritasi, stress hingga kematian. Padahal untuk sapi perah bagi keluarga pe ternak adalah sumber penghasilan utama. Disinilah tim animal rescue mengambil peran dengan cara menanganan sapi tersebut sehingga masyarakat mau mengungsi.

Helping Animals Affected by Disasters

This activity may still be foreign to some Indonesian people. Helping animals affected by disasters? Yes, that’s what Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) has done since 2010. When a disaster occurs, the focus of aid and support is for the impacted human beings. What about the animals? They are not a priority yet. while the fact is in some families, dogs and cats are parts of their daily family lives. In certain areas, people depend on large animals, such as dairy cows, to support the family’s economy. For this reason, the choice of saving animals is the reason the COP team works. In certain cases, domesticated wildlife animals are not spared from the impact of disasters. They could be monkeys kept in cages or chained, birds in cages for family entertainment and admiration.

Sometimes when a disaster occurs, humans are busily concentrated in saving their own lives. They tend to leave and neglect their pet animals. Many of them being left in small cages with very limited food and clean water. They would die within a few days. This situation, the fact that saving animals during disasters has not a priority yet, has prompted COP to fill the emerging urgent need during disasters. When animals could be saved, such as dairy cows, they would continue providing sustainability for their owners affected by disasters. This has indeed taken place when COP team helped handling the dairy cows at the slopes of Mount Merapi during its eruption. As their owners have to find temporary refuge in safer places, our team could prevent their cows from perishing.

This has saved the owners from suffering great loss, not only from the death of their cows, but from the loss of future sources of income generated by their dairy cows. They could be prevented from any economic calamity. This book presents a series of photo stories of how hard the COP team and volunteers who are members of the Orangufriends (COP volunteer group) work to help animals in disasters in several areas in Indonesia.

Hopefully this book can inspire anyone to get involved and help other creatures outside of human beings which might need pressing and timely support when disasters occur and impact in their own ways. Finally, I wish you a happy reading of this book.

Menolong Satwa Bencana

Kegiatan ini mungkin masih asing di beberapa telinga masyarakat Indonesia. bencana kok bantu satwa?. Ya benar, itu yang sudah di lakukan Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) sejak tahun 2010. Ketika bencana terjadi fokus pertolongan dan bantuan kemanusiaan menjadi fokus utama. Bagaimana dengan satwa? Masih belum menjadi prioritas. Dalam beberapa keluarga satwa anjing kucing merupakan bagian keluarga yang sangat erat. Didaerah tertentu masyarakat bergantung pada satwa besar seperti sapi yang sekedar diambil susunya guna penopang ekonomi keluarga. Dengan alasan ini pilihan penyelamatan satwa menjadi alasan tim COP bekerja. Ada dalam kasus tertentu satwa liar peliharaan tak luput dari dampak bencana. Monyet yang dipelihara/dirantai, burung -burunh dalam kandang yang jadi penghias rumah. Terkadang ketika bencana terjadi manusia sibuk menyelamatkan diri dan satwa yang menjadi hobi atau kecintaanya ditinggal begitu saja dengan ruang terbatas tanpa pakan dan air bersih dan menuju mati. Aksi-aksi penyelamatan ini yang COP lakukan ketika bantuan satwa bencana belum menjadi prioritas di Indonesia. Ketika satwa hidup juga akan memberikan ekonomi keberlanjutan bagi manusia yang terdampak bencana seperti contoh kasus sapi perah di lereng merapi. Ketika sapi mati terdampak erupsi tentunya bukan hanya berakibat kerugian harta dan nyawa tapi bencana lanjutan berupa kesulitan ekonomi dampak hilangnya penghasilan dari susu sapi perah menjadi contoh nyata. Dalam buku ini menampilkan runutan cerita foto seberapa keras tim COP bersama relawan yang tergabung dalam Orangufriends (kelompok relawan COP) bekerja membantu satwa di bencana di beberapa daerah di Indonesia.

Semoga buku ini bisa menginspirasi siapapun untuk dapat terlibat dan membantu makhluk lain diluar manusia yang membutubkan pertolongan saat bencana terjadi lewat caranya masing masing. Akhirnya saya ucapkan selamat membaca buku ini.

Erupsi Gunung Sinabung Sumatera Utara, 2014

Mount Sinabung Eruption

In early January 2014, the residents of Tanah Karo in North Sumatra province were shocked by eruption of the nearby Mount Sinabung, which brought about massive rain of ash covering their villages and the roofs of their houses. Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency, with a height of 2460 meters, last erupted in 2010 after previously dormant for hundreds of years.

At least 13 people died as a result of this eruption and more than 13,000 people were forced to flee to safer places. Agricultural land and community farm fields were all damaged and even some villages had to be relocated because they were considered no longer liveable, such as Sukameriah Village, Payung District, Bekerah Village and Simacem Village in Namanteran District. Mount Sinabung has continued erupting and spewing thick ashes to these villages over the years.

The COP Animal Rescue Team since January 18, 2014 has been in Kabanjahe City to provide support to the animals affected by the Sinabung disaster. For Mount Sinabung undertaking, the COP team received support from IFAW. We have sent four different groups to the area due to the length of the eruption of Mount Sinabung, which occurred so many times over the last few years. The team even decided to create a makeshift emergency shelter for dogs in the Kabanjahe area to ease the process of implementing the assistance.

Every day the team had to approach disaster-prone areas to feed the animals left behind by their owners. The animals were dominated by dogs and several cats. Dozens of dogs and cats are being fed by the team every day. The main occupation of the people at the slopes of Mount Sinabung is farming vegetables, such as carrots. But the areas also have a lot of citrus orchards. Scores of village residents who were asked by the government to evacuate decided to “placed” their pet dogs at the villages to protect their citrus plantations from thieves.

The owners of the farm estates who are also the masters of the dogs periodically returned to their villages to feed their dogs. They have to play hide-and-seek with the police officers and soldiers guarding the red zone areas. The farmers brought rice and dog food for their pets.

Of course, this is a very dangerous activity because Mount Sinabung continuously emits hot clouds all the time. The Animal Rescue team takes on this role by bringing dry food for dogs and cats, in close coordination with the security forces guarding the dangerous zones.

The Animal rescue team was only given a few minutes to enter the red zone using a modified motorcycle. Two people swiftly entered one village and poured dry food for dogs at several points that the team has memorized. One of the team members is a local resident who is familiar with the entrance and escape routes of the villages at the slopes of Mount Sinabung.

He or she is also very familiar with the locations of the dogs.

Erupsi Gunung Sinabung

Awal Januari 2014 warga Tanah Karo dikejutkan dengan hujan abu yang menyelimuti atap rumah. Hujan abu ini berasal dari erupsi Gunung Sinabung di Kabupaten Karo. Gunung dengan ketinggian 2460 meter ini terakhir erupsi pada 2010 setelah sebelum nya 1200 tahun tertidur.

Setidaknya ada 13 korban jiwa akibat erupsi ini dan 13.000 jiwa lebih terpaksa mengungsi ke tempat yang lebih aman. Lahan pertanian dan kebun masyarakat semua rusak bahkan beberapa desa akhirnya harus direlokasi karena sudah tidak aman lagi, seperti Desa Sukameriah, Kecamatan Payung, Desa Bekerah dan Desa Simacem di Kecamatan Namanteran.

Tim Animal Rescue COP sejak 18 Januari 2014 sudah berada di Kota Kabanjahe untuk melakukan per tolongan terhadap satwa korban bencana Sinabung. Untuk Gunung Sinabung ini tim COP yang didukung oleh IFAW berangkat empat kloter karena panjangnya bencana erupsi Gunung Sinabung. Bahkan tim memutuskan untuk membuat shelter darurat untuk anjing di daerah Kabanjahe.

Setiap hari tim harus mendekat ke kawasan rawan bencana untuk memberi makan satwa-satwa yang ditingggal mengungsi pemiliknya. Untuk jenis satwanya didominasi anjing di beberapa kucing. Puluhan anjing dan kucing diberi makan oleh tim setiap harinya. Pekerjaan utama masyarakat dikaki Gunung Sinabung yang merupakan petani sayur seperti wortel. Namun juga didominasi oleh kebun jeruk. Warga yang diminta Pemerintah untuk mengungsi akhirnya “menempatkan” anjing-anjing peliharaannya untuk menjaga kebun jeruk dari maling.

Pemilik kebun yang sekaligus tuan dari anjing-anjing tersebut secara sembunyi-sembunyi tanpa diketahui oleh penjaga seperti Polisi dan TNI yang berjaga di perbatasan zona merah.

Naik menuju kebun terse but dengan mambawa makanan dalam ember berisi nasi. Tentunya ini kegiatan yang sangat berbahaya karena Gunung Sinabung yang terus menerus mengeluarkan awan panas setiap saat. Tim Animal Rescue mengambil peran tersebut dengan membawa makanan kering untuk anjing dan kucing (dry food), dengan tetap berkoordinasi dengan pihak keamanan.

Tim Animal Rescue hanya diberi waktu beberapa menit masuk dalam zona merah, dengan menggunakan sepeda motor yang sudah dimodifikasi. Dua orang masuk dalam satu desa dengan cepat. Menuangkan secara cepat makanan dry food untuk anjing dibeberapa titik yang sudah dihapal oleh tim. Salah satu tim tersebut merupakan warga lokal yang sudah sangat hapal sebuk beluk desa-desa dikaki Gunung Sina bung dan sangat hapal dimana saja titik-titik lokasi adanya anjing.

Erupsi Gunung Kelud Jawa Timur, 2014

Mount Kelud Eruption

On February 13, 2014, the people living at the western-part of East Java to eastern-part of Central Java were shocked by the eruption of Mount Kelud in East Java province. Volcanic ash due to this eruption covered almost all cities and areas in the western-part of East Java, eastern-part of Central Java and even reaching the city of Jogjakarta. The mountain, which is closed to the cities of Blitar, Kediri and Malang, has caused several cities to be temporarily paralyzed due to the thick ash and rain which made the roads impassable.

On February 14, 2014 the Center for Orangutan Protection immediately dispatched the first group of its animal disaster relief team to the city of Kediri to help the animals affected by this eruption. Then on February 15, 2014 the second group team also departed to the location to support this animal disaster relief activity.

After conducting rapid field assessment, the team in Kediri did not find many animals that needed support. The team then shifted to the Ngantang area in Malang district. Located directly at the slopes of Mount Kelud, this area was heavily affected by the eruption. Many roofs of houses and cattle sheds collapsed because they were not strong enough to withstand the very thick and heavy load of volcanic ash.

The COP’s animal disaster relief team extended a lot of support to ease the lives of animals affected by Mount Kelud eruption in Malang district. Starting from evacuating dozens of cattle close to the refugee shelters, providing forage feed and concentrates for livestock, medical services for the affected animals and repairing the damages barns for the cattle. The team also conducted street feeding for unattended dogs and cats.

Erupsi Gunung Kelud

13 Februari 2014 masyarakat Jawa Timur hingga Jawa Tengah dikejutkan oleh letusan gunung Kelud, Abu vulkanik akibat erupsi ini hampir menutupi seluruh kota Jawa rimur bagian barat dan jawa tengah serta Jogjakarta. Gunung yang terletak di Jawa Timur dengan wilayah meliputi Blitar,Kediri dan Malang ini menyebabkan beberapa kota lumpuh sementara dikarenakan tebalnya abu dan hujan yang membuat jalanan tidak bisa dilewati.

Pada tanggal 14 Februari 2014 Centre for Orangutan Protection langsung menerjunkan kloter pertama tim animal disaster reliefnya menuju kota Kediri untuk membantu satwa-satwa yang terdampak bencana erupsi ini. Kemudian pada tanggal 15 Februari 2014 tim kloter kedua menyusul ke lokasi untuk mendukung kegiatan animal disater relief ini.

Setelah melakukan assessment cepat tim di Kediri tidak banyak menemukan satwa yang membutuhkan pertolongan, kemudian tim bergeser ke daerah Ngantang kabupaten Malang. Berada langsung di kaki gunung Kelud daerah ini sangat terdampak erupsi, banyak atap rumah dan kandang ternak yang runtuh karena tidak kuat menahan beban abu vulkanik yang sangat tebal.

Tim animal disaster relief COP banyak melakukan pertolongan terhadap satwa yang terdampak erupsi di kabupaten Malang. Mulai dari melakukan evakuasi puluhan ternak sapi menuju ahelter-shelter pengungsian, penyediaan pakan hijauan dan konsentrat untuk ternak-ternak, pelayanan medis untuk satwa-satwa yang terdampak.

Tim juga melakukan pembenahan kandang-kandang yang rusak serta street feeding untuk satwa anjing dan kucing.

Erupsi Gunung Agung Bali, 2017

Mount Agung Eruption

On September 23, 2017, the emergency status of Mount Agung on the Bali island was raised from level 3 to level 4 where the command to stay away from Mount Agung was issued by the Bali provincial government. Residents around the slopes of Mount Agung in Karangasem Regency began to vacate their respective homes to evacuate to safer areas. There were no fatalities in this disaster, but residents’ farm fields were damaged by thick volcanic ash. Around 40,000 people had to temporarily evacuate because of the eruption of Mount Agung.

The eruption of Mount Agung took place several times in the period between September and December 2017. It was recorded that COP sent the animal rescue team three times alternately to help the abandoned animals, mostly dogs, on the slopes of Mount Agung, namely in September, October and December 2017.

For these endeavors, the COP rescue team collaborated with the IFAW, JAAN and IOF in extending support for the animals in the villages closest to Mount Agung, such as in Rendang, Selat, Kubu, Karangasem sub-districts. The animals are dominated by dogs and some cats. Every day the team feeds more than 150 dogs and cats.

Erupsi Gunung Agung

Tanggal 23 September 2017 status Gunung Agung di Pulau Bali naik dari level 3 ke level 4 yang mana perintah untuk menjauh dari Gunung Agung dikeluarkan Pemerintah Bali. Warga sekitar lereng Gunung Agung di Kabupaten Karangasem mulai mengosongkan rumah masing-masing untuk mengungsi ke wilayah aman.

Tidak ada korban jiwa dalam bencana ini namun terlihat kebun-kebun warga yang rusak akibat debu vulkanik yang tebal. Sekitar 40.000 jiwa harus mengungsi akibat erupsi Gunung Agung.

Erupsi Gunung Agung berlangsung beberapa kali dalam periode September hingga Desember 2017. Tercatat COP tiga kali menurunkan tim secara bergantian untuk menolong satwa-satwa di lereng Gunung Agung, yaitu pada bulan September, Oktober dan Desember 2017.

Kali ini tim COP bekerjasama dengan IFAW, JAAN dan IOF dalam menolong satwa-satwa di desa-desa terdekat dengan Gunung Agung seperti di Kecamatan Rendang, Selat, Kubu, Karangasem dll. Untuk satwanya sendiri didominasi oleh Jenis anjing dan sebagian kucing. Setiap hari tim memberi makan lebih dari 150 ekor anjing dan kucing.

Erupsi Gunung Merapi Yogyakarta, 2020

Mount Merapi Eruption

Merapi, a mountain located between the provinces of Central Java and Yogyakarta, is the most active volcano in Indonesia. Merapi has an eruption cycle of 2-5 years which makes this mountain get special attention from the government for disaster management.

The COP team directly took action several times to help handling the animals affected by the eruption of Mount Merapi. In fact, the eruption of Mount Merapi in 2010 was the beginning of the establishment of the COP team called the APE Warrior. One of the things this team does is handling animals when natural disasters occur. At that time, the COP team collaborated with the Animal Husbandry Service of Sleman Regency and several organizations to act directly to affected locations to help the impacted animals following Mount Merapi eruption. Not only domestic and livestock animals, our team also provided support to the impacted wild animals, such as the long-tailed monkeys. Every day the team conducted street feeding for domestic animals, looking for and collected grass for animal feed, and also evacuate the animals very prone to the disasters to safer areas.

In early November 2020, when the status of Mount Merapi rose to level 3, the APE Warrior team from COP also directly coordinated with the Agriculture and Livestock Service Office of the Sleman Regency to mitigate the disaster caused by Merapi eruption. Because there was an instruction from the Sleman Regent to vacate the area at the 5 km radius from the peak of Merapi, the team helped evacuate livestock in Kalitengah Lor Village to safer shelters, namely Singlar Shelter, Gading Shelter and also helped build temporary shelters in Banjarsari Field. Every day the team helps farmers to distribute grass taken from Kalitengah Lor village to each shelter and also conduct street feeding for domestic animals in several locations situated some 5-8 km from the peak of Merapi in Sleman Regency.

Erupsi Gunung Merapi

Merapi, gunung yang terletak di antara Provinsi Jawa Tengah dan Yogyakarta ini merupakan gunung api teraktif di Indonesia. Merapi disebut memiliki siklus erupsi 2-5 tahunan yang membuat gunung ini mendapatkan perhatian lebih dari pemerintah untuk penanggulangan bencananya.

Tim COP beberapa kali turun langsung membantu satwa korban bencana erupsi gunung Merapi. Letusan Gunung Merapi tahun 2010 merupakan awal berdirinya salah satu tim COP bernama APE Warrior. Salah satu yang dikerjakan oleh tim ini adalah penanganan untuk satwa ketika bencana alam terjadi. Saat itu tim COP bekerjasama dengan Dinas Peternakan Kabupaten Sleman dan beberapa organisasi turun langsung ke lokasi-lokasi yang terdampak untuk menolong satwa-satwa setelah Gunung Merapi meletus. Tidak hanya satwa domestik dan ternak tapi juga satwa liar seperti monyet ekor panjang yang terdampak erupsi saat itu. Setiap hari tim melakukan street feeding untuk satwa domestik, mencari rumput untuk pakan satwa ternak sampai melakukan evakuasi satwa ke daerah yang lebih aman.

Pada awal November 2020 ketika status Gunung Merapi naik menjadi level 3 tim APE Warrior COP juga langsung berkoordinasi dengan Dinas Pertanian dan Peternakan Kabupaten Sleman untuk melakukan mitigasi bencana erupsi Merapi. Karena ada perintah dari Bupati Sleman untuk mengosongkan kawasan yang berjarak 5 km dari puncak Merapi. Tim membantu evakuasi satwa ternak yang berada di Dusun Kalitengah Lor menuju beberapa shelter yang lebih aman, yaitu di Shelter Singlar, Shelter Gading dan membantu membangun shelter di Lapangan Banjarsari. Setiap hari tim membantu peternak untuk mendistribusikan rumput yang diambil di Dusun Kalitengah Lor menuju masing-masing shelter dan juga melakukan street feeding untuk satwa domestik di lokasi-lokasi yang berjarak 5-8 km dari puncak Merapi di Kabupaten Sleman.

Palu Earthquake

Three simultaneous disasters occurred at once during the earthquake in Palu-Donggala areas in Central Sulawesi province in September 2018. They were strong temblor, tsunami and liquefaction of some land areas. The 7.4 magnitude quake was centered in Donggala City but severe damage was in Palu City and Sigi Regency. The quake triggered a tsunami that swept along the coastal areas of Palu City, while liquefaction occurred in the Petobo and Balaroa housing estates near Palu. The disasters caused 2045 fatalities, hundreds of people missing and so many others injured.

Thousands of properties were heavily damaged, including those crumbled and sank during the soil liquefaction. COP sent a team on the fourth day after the disaster hit the areas. Our team reached the impacted areas overland from Mamuju City because air access was still closed. The team carried out rapid field assessment and coordinated with the Central Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) and decided to open a shelter in the Central Sulawesi BKSDA office yard.

Every day the Animal Rescue team feeds abandoned and unattended dogs and cats in the disaster areas. On the average, every day, there are 50-80 dogs and cats that the team feeds. Most of them are cats and dogs which have been abandoned by their owners. The team also helped the BKSDA of Central Sulawesi to care for and feed the protected wildlife in the transit enclosure and the Kapopo Forest Park. The team also helped repair Ms Ana’s cat shelter in Palu City and translocated 12 animals in the BKSDA enclosure to the Animal Rescue Center in Tasikoki, North Sulawesi.

Gempa Palu

Tiga bencana sekaligus melanda di Kota Palu di Sulawesi Tengah dalam satu waktu yaitu gempa bumi, tsunami dan likuifaksi. Gempa bumi bermagnitudo 7,4 SR berpusat di Kota Donggala namun kerusakan parah ada di Kota Palu dan Kabupaten Sigi. Sementara tsunami menyapu pesisir pantai barat Kota Palu, sedangkan likuifaksi meratakan Perumahan Petobo dan Balaroa di Palu. Tercatat korban jiwa sebanyak 2045 dan ratusan orang hilang. COP menurunkan tim pada hari ke empat setelah bencana terjadi ke Kota Palu melalui jalur darat dari Kota Mamuju dikarenakan akses udara masih tertutup. Tim melakukan asesmen cepat dan berkoordinasi dengan Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam Sulawesi Tengah dan memutuuskan untuk membuka posko di halaman kantor BKSDA Sulteng.

Setiap hari tim Animal Rescue memberikan makan anjing dan kucing yang menjadi korban di area bencana. Rata-rata setiap hari ada 50-80 ekor anjing dan kucing yang tim berikan makan. Sebagian besar kucing dan anjing yang ditinggal mengungsi pemiliknya. Tim juga membantu BKSDA Sulteng merawat dan memberi makan satwa liar dilindungi yang ada di kandang transit dan Tahura Kapopo. Tim juga membantu memperbaiki shelter kucing milik Ibu Ana di Kota Palu dan mentranslokasi 12 satwa yang berada di kandang BKSDA ke Pusat Penyelamatan Satwa di Tasikoki, Sulawesi Utara.

Mamuju Earthquake

Early pass midnight on Friday, January 15, 2021, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale rocked the coastal areas between the Majene Regency and Mamuju Regency in West Sulawesi province. At least 105 people died, hundred others injured, while hundreds of buildings were heavily damaged. Most of the people got panicky and chose to flee out of their towns to other cities, such as to Makassar, Polewali Mandar, Pare-Pare, etc.

On the fifth day after the earthquake, the COP animal rescue team arrived in Mamuju city. The team immediately coordinated with Orangufriend in Mamuju, who is also a veterinarian, namely drh (vet) Fikri Maruf to help map out the problems faced by the animals impacted by the disaster. After discussing and seeing the conditions in the field, the team decided to help the animal health shelter, which was coordinated by doctor/vet Maruf.

Every day this shelter provides food assistance for cats and dogs by distributing the food to the owners who come to the shelter for support. We also provide health services for animals which are dominated by cats and dogs. Besides, we also do street feeding in all affected areas of the city every day where scores of cats and dogs being left behind by their owners who are temporarily moving to other places. Animal handling after the earthquake in Mamuju is slightly different from other earthquake disasters. Mamuju is the capital city of the newly-established West Sulawesi province. However, although it is called the capital city, it looks more like a developing district town.

The population of Mamuju City is dominated by immigrants from the surrounding cities, such as Makassar, Polewali Mandar, Palu and some other cities in Sulawesi. When the earthquake first occurred on the afternoon of January 14, 2021, it was considered the beginning of the earthquake. Then a stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter Scale struck on the following morning which caused a lot of victims and extensive damages in Mamuju and Majene. With this trauma, people chose to immediately leave or return to their hometowns. The panic-attack has resulted in several cases where their pets being abandoned. The animal rescue team even found scores of cats still being locked inside some houses.

Another thing that characterized the Mamuju city is the fact that there are many housing estates across the city. When almost 100 percent of the housing dwellers fled the city, so many cats were stranded in the housing compounds. In close coordination with the housing security, COP animal rescue team conducted feeding visits to these compounds every day to provide dry food (cat food) that can be consumed by cats or dogs.

Gempa Mamuju

Jumat, 15 Januari 2021 dini hari sekitar pukul 02.30 Wita Sulawesi Barat khususnya Kabupaten Majene dan Kabupaten Mamuju diguncang gempa bermagnitudo 6,2 SR. Tercatat setidaknya 105 korban jiwa dan ratusan bangunan rusak. Sebagian besar masyarakat panik dan memilih mengungsi keluar kota seperti Makasar, Poliwali Mandar, Pare-pare dll.

Pada hari kelima setelah gempa tim animal rescue COP tiba di kota Mamuju. Tim langsung berkoordinasi dengan Orangufriends Mamuju yang juga dokter hewan yaitu drh Fikri Maruf untuk memetakan permasalahan terhadap satwa-satwa korban dari bencana ini. Setelah diskusi dan melihat langsung kondisi di lapangan tim memutuskan untuk membantu posko kesehatan hewan yang di koordinir oleh drh Maruf.

Setiap hari posko ini memberikan bantuan pakan kepada masayarakat yang datang ke posko, juga memberikan pelayanan kesehatan untuk satwa-satwa yang didominasi kucing dan anjing serta setiap hari juga kami melakukan street feeding di seluruh area kota. Penanganan satwa pasca gempa di Mamuju sedikit berbeda dengan bencana gempa yang lain. Mamuju adalah kota ibukota propinsi Sulawesi Barat yang kecil, bahkan ibukotanya berstatus kabupaten, bukan kotamadya.

Penduduk Kota Mamuju didominasi dari orang-orang pendatang dari kota sekitar Mamuju, seperti Makasar, Poliwari Mandar, Palu dan kota lainnya di Sulawesi. Ketika gempa pertama kali pada sore hari tanggal 14 Januari 2021 dianggap awal mula gempa. Kemudian gempa besar dengan 6,2 SR pada dinihari berikutnya dianggap gempa susulan yang sangat besar. Dengan trauma tersebut masyarakat memilih pergi atau mengungsi ke kota asalnya masing-masing saat itu juga. Kepanikan mengakibatkan beberapa kasus oleh tim animal rescue temui adalah kucing terkunci didalam rumah.

Hal lainnya yang berbeda dari Mamuju ialah bentuk kota dengan didominasi komplek perumahan. Ketika hampir 100 persen penduduk perumahan mengungsi keluar kota maka sangat banyak kucing yang terlantar didalam perumahan tersebut. Dengan selalu berkoordinasi dengan pihak keamanan perumahan, tim animal rescue setiap hari mengunjungi perumahan-perumahan tersebut untuk menuangkan makanan kering (cat food) yang bisa dimakan oleh kucing atau anjing.
