History of the city of Aceh

Aceh is a province in Indonesia whose capital is Banda Aceh.

Aceh is one of the provinces in Indonesia which is given the status of a special region and is also given special autonomy authority.

Aceh is the land closest to the epicenter of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. After the earthquake, tsunami waves hit most of the west coast of this province. Around 170,000 people died or disappeared as a result of the disaster. This disaster also prompted the creation of a peace agreement between the government of the Republic of Indonesia and the separatist group, the Free Aceh Movement (GAM).

Prehistoric era

Aceh has been inhabited by humans since the Mesolithic era. This is proven by the existence of the Bukit Kerang site which is claimed to be a relic of that era in Aceh Tamiang district.

Excavations have also been carried out at the Pangkalan Village Site and found artifacts from the Mesolithic era in the form of Sumatralith axes, human tooth fragments, rhino bones and several other simple tools.

Royal era

Like other areas in the archipelago, Aceh has also experienced a period of development of Hinduism and Buddhism which came from the continent of South Asia (India). At that time, Aceh was characterized by the existence of several kingdoms based on this religion, for example the Indra Puri Kingdom, the Indra Patra Kingdom and the Indra Purwa Kingdom located in Aceh Besar which adhered to Hindu beliefs and were influenced by India. Apart from that, Aceh was also part of the HinduBuddhist kingdoms that once triumphed in the archipelago thousands of years ago, such as Srivijaya.

The entry of Islam

There is still disagreement regarding the issue of when Islam was first spread to Aceh. Some are of the view that it started during the caliphate of Uthman bin Affan as the third caliph after the apostolate of Muhammad SAW.

Regarding Islam that came to Aceh, Snouck Hurgronje with his Gujarat theory said that the Islam that came there was not the Islam that Muhammad brought, but Islam that had matured.

Not Islam from the Koran and Hadith, but Islam with its Fiqh books and dogma from 3 centuries later.

Sultanate of Aceh

Aceh independence movement Since 1976, a liberation organization called the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) has attempted to separate Aceh from Indonesia through military efforts. On August 15 2005, GAM and the Indonesian government finally signed a peace agreement, ending the conflict between the two parties which had lasted for almost 30 years.
