Sem 6 | Site: Dadar | Area: 2300 sqm

In an era of increased specialization in almost all fields, vo cational education and skills development of individuals promises to be the key to accentuate increased productivity. Economic disparities need to be mitigated to ensure na tional development, and a ‘Knowledgeable workforce’ can exhibit proficiency as well as the flexibility to compete in the globalized work sphere. Rapid technological transformations demand constant updation of skills learnt to ensure relevance and effectiveness.

Hence, building a skilled workforce is inevitable, to positively impact economic growth, raise productivity and reduce unemployment. So the project aims to evolve a model for some of the high ly demanded vocations, through the institute located in the heart of the city.

SPECTRUM RESIDENCE

Post covid housing

Sem 7 | Site: Ghansoli | Area: 6000 sqm

The pandemic has changed our world views in many different ways in all sectors of life. Our needs have changed and we perceive housing in a very different way.

The advent of the work from home culture, the social, emo tional and health issues thrown up thereby have led to a par adigm shift in the way housing will be planned in the com ing years. A relook at housing is necessary to fulfill all these evolving needs.

Another major influence on housing that can’t be ignored is the more than obvious impact of climate change and global warming in particular. It is imperative that we make our housing more climate responsive.

The project is urban housing which is generally set in a dense high-rise context common to most cities. There will be a com bination of different sizes of apartment along with the associated building services and parking requirements.

“ We believe that a child educated ‘only’ inside four walls of a classroom is an uneducated child “

A School is an integral part of community development and wellbeing. Apart from giving formal ‘knowledge’ it must also encourage compassion and share, not compete. Students must also be enlightened towards nature, local wisdom, en ergy.

School is where students, teachers & community participate in well-being. The school is an instrument of community and expert participation as well as developing education.

The intent of this project is to not only provide the formal education but to create an environment in which a child can be thought the concept of aaa (self-reliance), communal harmony, Traditional science and local Craft and culture.

Zoning plan of the design

Zoning options according to area statement

Because of the large site, entire zoning was done in middle stretch of the site keeping playground, farmland and future extension space at the back side. This was for sim plicity of users from all age groups to avoid crossing the entire site for any function

The position of classroom is such that there is easy access for every space(i.e., playground, dining, multipurpose hall, recreational area, activity area, assem bly, library, laboratories, etc.). So, zoning is planned keeping the programs in mind

The spaces used by local people for after school hour programs, are kept near the entrance for easy access. This includes multipurpose hall, stalls, library, public toilets, computer lab, AV room, day care center and community classes

PROJECT NISARGA Campsite

Sem 4 | Site: Khalapur, overlooking lake Kalote

This place will be meant for groups for 2 to 5 days’ stay in shared accommodations. During their stay they will indulge in various indoor and outdoor, group activities.

Several important objectives of the project are to create min imum negative impact on nature and create healthy relation between human and nature. It appreciates nature by using nature or elements of nature as a design tool by creating spaces with good user experience for every age group also tackling the climatic situation. An experience of an entirely dif ferent community living.

Using local materials for construction will not only use and respect the native knowledge as well as skills of the people but also provide them job opportunities. This will also encourage community development.

Experiential sketches exploring form of design on contour site

41

Use of natural materials which are lo cally available on site like bamboo and rammed earth not only adds to sustain ability but also the texture and feel of these materials gives the experience of being merging with the mother nature

Semi open ness and larger openings in the form help for lighter character and enhances connection with surrounding landscape. It also makes sure proper light and ventilation to each spaces ac cording to the need.

Each individual units are very grounded and humble structures. As they are close to ground and arranged in hierarchy keeping in mind character of the slope on site, they do not obstruct the view of the lake at any point on the site.

Conceptual sections exploring form of design on contour site

42

Plan of the entire site showing each space and relation between them

The programme is scattered all over the site, it is utilising whole site to have different experiences from each level and don’t miss any views. The functional spaces are connected with common pathway network which has various local species of plants along side for better experience. Bunch of flowering trees, land arts and earthen artifacts made in workshops by the visitors are planned near entrance for newcomers to feel like they are being invited to this alternative lifestyle. At the junctions there are wooden poles to show direction of the spaces. The area allotted for staff is near to admin, dining as well as other gathering spaces to provide quick service and maintenance.

There is organic farming practised by native people as well as visitors where local fruits and vegetables for daily consump tion are grown. The pathway through organic farms lead to forest area where activities like bird watching and Burma bridge will hap pen. It ends at deck area near the lake. Another way to reach the lake is through amphitheatre area for night gatherings.

MOODABIDRI: SERIES OF COMPLEXITY AND CONTRADICTION

COA Students’ awards for excellence in documentation of architectural heritage runner up

Documentation and Exhibition by Aoa batch of 2024 Role: Documentation, Drawings, Analysis, Creating the Narrative, Presentation

A stitched glory of basadis and dwellings, Moodabidri is an amalgamation of rich culture, religion, and architecture. Amidst the rusty red laterite marvels, we experienced strong spiritual ges tures not only in the aura of the place but also from the recital of every sculpted pillar, every areca nut cracking, the cast silhouette of the majestic Manasthamba, and rushing school buses in the narrow alleys of Basadis.

69

The study intended to explore archi tecture as a derived concept of religion, commerce, identity, and ownership. Pondering upon the local lives and factual religious proto cols, the study concludes in unsolved myster ies and conflicting statements developing the idea of COMPLEXITY and CONTRADICTION. Architectural visual continuity is experienced where houses offer a resemblance to that of the basadis. This was due to the fabric of the houses that created a similar ambiance, not only in the interiors but also from the exterior. Each structure flourished a self-chore ographed tale that unfolds all layers of the set tlement that remain interconnected via people and the aura of spiritual esteem in its architec tural shadow.

The experience of hands on materials has helped us gained practical confidence to deliver in terms of design innovation.

Along with team work, it also trained us with techniques of tool usage and about unplanned adjustments that at times have to be done on site.

We learned to adapt and manipulate corresponding to site conditions and available resourc es.

The procedure revealed to us the idea about quality and quantity of materials being invested along with equitable distribution of workforce.

From trimming brick bats to arranging bamboo dowels, human errors accompanied too and were satisfactorily rectified.

Shortcomings in workmanship improved in further stages with practice. Comprehensively it helped us improvise and supervise our design goals with timely invest ment in each part of construction and permit of site intervention.
