Welcome to the Crown Prince’s Cup Festival, sponsored by Cebarco.
It is a great honour to have you with us at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club as we come together for a weekend of fantastic racing and a celebration of the sport’s continued evolution in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
I extend my gratitude to our partner, Cebarco, for their continued sponsorship of this year’s feature race. Now in the second year of this collaboration, Cebarco’s support reflects our shared vision of excellence and innovation in the sport, and we are proud to continue strengthening this valued partnership.
I would also like to recognise the contributions of our sponsors across the festival, Howden Group, Al Muzdaher Stud, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Grand Seiko and The Bahrain Jewellery Centre, Lexus and EK Kanoo, and Gulf Air whose ongoing support remains integral to the success of our racing season.
The Crown Prince’s Cup is a highlight of Bahrain’s racing calendar, showcasing the remarkable talent of our equine athletes and jockeys, while reinforcing the Kingdom’s growing reputation in the international racing community.
This year, we are delighted to welcome an international field, with runners representing Bahrain, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the United Arab Emirates.
Beyond the excitement on the track, the weekend reflects our broader commitment to advancing the sport in Bahrain and promoting the Kingdom as a global destination for horse racing. I am delighted to welcome our international guests and extend my best wishes to all participants.
Chairman of the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club
KHALID ABDULRAHIM Group Chairman & CEO
Cebarco is the construction arm of the long-established KAR Group. Cebarco has developed some of the Kingdoms most prestigious projects such as the Bahrain Formula 1, Exhibition World, City Centre Mall and Marassi Mall to name but a few.
As a proud Bahrain company Cebarco has also expanded overseas and developed projects in the UAE and Cyprus, of particular note is the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 and the Trilogy in Limassol.
Khalid Abdulrahim is the Founder and Chairman of Cebarco and the KAR Group of companies and has a long interest in horse racing not only in Bahrain but in various other countries. Friarstown Bloodstock Ltd, which is part of the KAR Group, operates a stud farm in Ireland and has racing interests in the UK, Ireland and UAE.
Cebarco is delighted to sponsor The Crown Prince’s Cup of HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and will remain supportive of the Bahrain Turf Club under the wise leadership of HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and the Clubs aim to develop quality local and International racing in the Kingdom.
The 2024 running of the Bahrain International Trophy saw history made as Spirit Dancer became the first dual winner of the Kingdom’s most valuable race.
The victory made for another special occasion for Spirit Dancer’s owner breeder, Sir Alex Ferguson, who was again on hand to welcome his winner with co-owner Ged Mason. It was also a masterful feat of training by Richard Fahey, who had nurtured the horse back to his best after picking up an injury in March, and a brilliant ride from jockey, Oisin Orr.
The Group 2 race attracted a truly international field and produced a thrilling contest as Spirit Dancer repeated his success in the race, once again coming with a strong run down the outside, this time to overhaul eventual runner-up Lead Artist.
Lead Artist was trained by John & Thady Gosden and it was the fourth time they have produced the runnerup in the Bahrain International Trophy. In third was Calif, owned by Victorious Racing and trained in France by Carlos and Yann Lerner.
As well as attracting runners from six different racing jurisdictions this year’s Bahrain International Trophy was broadcast around the world to a record number 27 broadcasters in 113 countries.
Today we welcome Tom Marquand, Bahrain Turf Club ambassador, to the Crown Prince’s Cup Festival.
In recent years the multiple Group 1 winning jockey has strengthened his partnership with the Kingdom of Bahrain through his sponsorship with the Bahrain Turf Club.
Firmly established as one of the world’s leading riders, Marquand has enjoyed big race success all over the world, including here in the Middle East, as well as in Europe, the USA, the Far East and Australia.
The 26-year-old enjoyed another successful year in 2024 in which the highlight was victory in the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes on Economics, owned by His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Tom is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most respected jockeys, with a reputation and a following that resonates across international racing. To have someone of his stature associated with the Bahrain Turf Club reflects our ambition and commitment to aligning with the very best in the sport.
EDWARD VEALE Director of Racing and International Relations, Bahrain Turf
Club
Running from December through to March, the Bahrain Turf Series provides opportunities for international trained runners to compete against local Bahrain based horses.
This season two races have been added to make 12 races in all, spread across six fixtures. The two new races are each worth $100,000, bringing the overall value of the Bahrain Turf Series to $1million.
Bonus prizes are awarded to the horses accumulating the most points in the two divisions, middle-distance and sprint.
Promoting Bahraini women and their participation in equestrian sport
Last week, the Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) hosted the second edition of the RoyalTea Festival, held in partnership with the Supreme Council for Women.
The RoyalTea Festival aims to enhance the role of Bahraini women and their participation in various fields, including equestrian sports and horseracing.
The festival also included activities to showcase the unique experience available to women attending the races, organized by the REHC and sponsored by Bahrain Jewellery Centre, Annoushka Jewellery and Empire Limo.
In cooperation with the Supreme Council for Women, the REHC advocates the implementation of the principle of gender balance and equal opportunities.
The Club actively encourages Bahraini women to pursue careers as jockeys through training programs at the Bahrain Jockey Academy.
The success of apprentice jockey Dhay AlSaadon, who completed the Academy’s programme and now competes in races, demonstrates the Club’s dedication to diversifying the field of the sport’s participants.
Racecards allow racegoers to study the form and find out more about the horses that are racing in front of them.
There are usually 7-8 races taking place on each raceday and a racecard can appear quite confusing with a whole host of numbers, letters and facts to decipher. This quick guide has everything you need to understand and read a racecard.
The number of the race. Time the race is due off. Race name usually including sponsor.
02
The track the horses are running on. The distance the horses will travel from start to finish during the race displayed in meters.
The Owners colours that the Jockey will wear aboard the horse whilst racing. Each set of colours are unique to an owner. In the event of the owner having two runners the owner will change the cap colour so the judge can distinguish between the owner’s multiple runners. In some cases they may have more than one design of colours registered.
04 Horse’s saddlecloth number
The saddle cloth number assigned to the horse for the race. This is sorted by highest weight and then assigned alphabetically if horses are due to carry the same weight for handicap ratings.
05 Weight
This is the amount of weight each horse carries including the Jockey. If the Jockey holds an apprentice licence (and they can claim in the race) the weight with the claim will be displayed in brackets.
06 Horse’s name
Name of the horse displayed in English and Arabic within the racecard.
07 Horse’s age
Age of the horse at the time of the race.
The previous horses performances with details of date, distance, jockey, weight carried, race type, equipment worn i.e V for visor, placings, ratings, time, winners time, margins beaten or distance won by.
The stall numbers are randomly generated by the racing administration system for all races apart from the Bahrain International Trophy where a manual stalls draw is completed. The stalls draw dictates which gate number the horse will start the race from.
Sire (the father of the horse)
Dam (the mother of the horse) Damsire (the father of the dam)
11 Owner
The owner/s of the horse.
12 Jockey’s name
The rider of the horse.
13 Breeder
The person/s responsible for breeding the horse.
14 Trainer
The person responsible for the training and welfare of the horse.
Headgear is used by trainers to try and help a horse’s overall performance. Headgear is displayed in the racecard as follows:
B = blinkers | E = eye hood
EC = eye cover | ES = Eye Shield | H = Hood
HT = Hood and tongue tie | T = Tongue-tie
This is the horses current handicap rating for the race. On the form guide you can see previous ratings the horse has run off for its historic performances. A handicap rating is assigned to a horse by a Handicapper.
To p ower the nex t generation of Bahrain
The Kingdom of Bahrain’s energy landscape is changing. The way forward is global, collaborative and our success will be driven by our innovative spirit and industry-leading expertise.
