My Personal Philosophy as an Architect

Every space has its own charms and hidden beauties. The architect is merely a keen-eyed wanderer who happened to gaze at those glimmers, helping other observers to notice the glamour that surrounds them. Involvement of the architect’s hand shall bring harmony to its surroundings, integrating seamlessly with the needs of the subjects, all while caring for the local sphere. Coexistence, one graceful synchronicity.

A new experience of being human, one new normality.

In an era defined by the unprecedented challenges of a global pandemic, the realm of architecture takes on new significance. As architects, we are not merely creators of spaces; we are stewards of safety, health, and well-being. In this pursuit, we embarked on a transformative journey, breathing new life into an architecture studio designed for a different world. Our mission was clear: to reimagine and redefine the space to align with the demands of the “new normal”. Our vision is rooted in the belief that architecture hold the power to condition the behavior of Individuals.

The essence of our project transcends the boundaries of mere aesthetics. We have not just designed a studio; we have crafted a space with psychological conditioning that reinforced the importance of hygiene, social distancing, and touchless interaction. We proclaim our unwavering belief in architecture’s transformative potential. We assert our commitment to the values of safety, community, and well-being. The studio, redesigned for the “new normal,” stands as a testament to our collective resilience and creativity, a space that conditions its users to protect themselves and others.

Our design made cleanliness a seamless part of one’s experience inside the space. The studio becomes a place where one instinctively reaches for the sanitizer, not as an obligation but as a natural response. We reconfigure the layout to encourage safe distances between individuals, creating spatial pockets that reflect the essence of community without compromising on safety. Our furniture also elegantly combines function with aesthetics, all while minimizing touch. Nirmana Studio is a testament to our dedication on fostering a safe and harmonious coexistence with the pandemic, an integrated part of a graceful synchronicity with the world as it stands in that era.

Intuitive and contact-free operation reinforces the importance of hygiene in the by conditioning users to expect and embrace touchless interactions.

A corridor leading to a sanitation facility serves a purposeful pathway, enhancing user’s awareness of health practices, ultimately fostering a sense of responsibility and safety in public settings.

Hands-free operation reinforces the importance of hygiene in daily routines and psychologically reduces concerns about potential surface contamination.

Provides users with the flexibility to adjust their physical surroundings, fostering a sense of control over personal space while simultaneously social distancing, enhancing their safety in shared environments.

Extensive use of glass materials create a sense of openness, allowing natural light to flood spaces, and visually connecting the indoors with the outdoors, instilling a feeling of freedom and reducing the sense of confinement in enclosed environments.

The height of the west roof is increased to provide the potential of natural lighting. Sun rays went inside through the usage of skylight. Natural ambient lighting also occured through the extensive usage of glass material throughout the building.

The abundant amount of openings provided by the ventilated wall and roof offers a fresh breath of air into the building. The placement of these openings also made cross-ventilating possible, circulating the air inside effectively.

CHALLENGE

Nestled in the heart of Bandung, the capital city of West Java, Indonesia, Taman Citarum is enveloped by the vibrancy of the bustling districts that encompass it. The current usage of Taman Citarum, amidst such lively surroundings, is merely as a passive park. A place so profoundly embraced by life solely standing as a silent spectator is saddening. As architects with an eye for untapped potential, we are aiming to redefine Taman Citarum’s role within the urban tapestry.

Beyond a passive park, we envision a dynamic park where individuals from all walks of life can seek respite. Our ambition is to transform this green enclave into a haven—a graceful sinchronicity where people converge not merely to witness, but to actively engage, unwind, and find solace.

In the conceptualization of Taman Citarum, we are faced with the task of transforming it into an open green space that excels in three inclusivity aspects: mobility inclusion, age inclusion, and mental inclusion. In this context, inclusivity is defined by the acknowledgment and celebration of individual diversity.

Mobility inclusion necessitates the seamless integration and accessibility of transportation systems to cater to the diverse needs of all individuals, irrespective of physical abilities. Taman Citarum is envisioned as a space that ensures unimpeded mobility for everyone, including those with disabilities.

Age inclusion pertains to fostering an environment that values and accommodates individuals of all age groups, respecting the unique perspectives and needs of people at different stages of life. Taman Citarum aims to abolish age-related stereotypes and biases, making people of all ages feel valued, engaged, and hav e equal opportunities.

Mental inclusion revolves around establishing a societal framework that supports the varied mental health needs of individuals. Taman Citarum will be designed to incorporate features and material usages that address the distinct challenges faced by those with mental health conditions, birthing an environment that creates safe space and mitigates the risk of self-induced accidental injuries.
