Raring2go! THINGS TO DO

There is always lots of family fun to be had near home but, if you fa

1. Take a Tour of Birmingham REP

Explore the rarely seen backstage areas of the theatre this halfterm as The REP invites you to be an audience member, set builder, prosthetics maker or even an Assistant Stage Manager! Learn all about how productions are brought to life on stage; discover wondrous wigs, marvellous masks and an amazing array of costumes in the Wardrobe Department. Pick up one of the free quiz sheets and see how many fascinating things you and your children can spot backstage; try your hand at being an usher by showing your family to their seats or delve into the dressing up box and take your place on stage to show off your acting skills!

The tours have been created especially for families and last approximately 90 minutes. Tickets from £5.10 per person. Tours take place throughout the year but why not book a place on the next one on 26th October?

6. Festive fun

2. Lights, Camera Action at BBC Birmingham in the Mailbox

In the Public Space at BBC Birmingham on Level 7 of the Mailbox, you can try presenting the news or weather, watch presenters live on air, have a photo taken with the TARDIS or a Dalek, and take a touchscreen tour of the radio studio where The Archers is recorded. On a recent visit, our children enjoyed trying out the virtual reality headsets!

There’s an option to take a 90 minute tour of studios, but you’re advised to book in advance and age restrictions apply. Whilst there is a fee for the organised tour, it’s free to wander around the Public Space.

The Public Space is open seven days a week - Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.30pm, Sundays 11am to 5pm. There’s no need to book, you can just turn up. WWW.BBC.CO.UK/SHOWSANDTOURS/TOURS/ BIRMINGHAM

With the Christmas festive period fast approaching it won’t be long before we see the return of the Frankfurt Christmas Market and Christmas Craft Fair in the city centre on 16 November. This is always a great opportunity to enjoy a bit of family time – take a look around the stalls for a few Christmas presents, choose a couple of new additions to your Christmas decorations for this year and join in with the activities on offer. Why not tag this on to a visit to the theatre or another one of the great places to visit in the city to complete a really super day out?

ou fancy venturing further afield, how about a day out in the city?

4. Get Inspired at Thinktank

Thinktank is Birmingham’s award-winning science museum housed at Millennium Point. This exciting attraction offers ten galleries of historical artefacts, modern interactive displays and fantastic futuristic facts. Children will love exploring the Science Garden and the huge mechanical structures which include a square wheeled wagon and a human hamster wheel. Whilst there is a fee to enter the main museum, entry to the discovery space outside the museum is free each day between 3pm and 5pm. See page 11 for more information about the events planned for Half Term.

5.Explore Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Entry to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is free so take advantage and spend a little time exploring with the kids. Pick up a free family trail from the Vestibule Desk and get more out of your visit. There are special seasonal trails during the school holidays to look out for. You could also borrow one of the Staffordshire Hoard activity packs from the Vestibule desk and explore the Staffordshire Hoard with a storybook, jigsaw and other interactive activities (small deposit required).

Check out their website for a variety of drop-in family activities throughout the weekends and Birmingham school holidays. Breastfeeding is welcomed in the Edwardian Tearooms which offers a varied children’s menu and highchairs.

6. MAC centre and Cannon Hill Park

The MAC centre, based in the grounds of bustling Cannon Hill Park, is a cultural hub which regularly houses exhibitions, shows films, theatre and runs workshops (including children’s activities for all ages). Refreshments are available in the Bridges café on site. Mums are welcome to breast feed anywhere in the MAC which is good to hear. The park itself is a huge open space, with playgrounds and pedalos to enjoy too.

Pop next door to Birmingham’s Wildlife Conservation Park. It’s an inexpensive urban zoo - home to a wide range of animals including meerkats, lemurs and otters, the centre also has a wide collection of endangered reptiles; playing an important role in international breeding programmes for them. Raring2go! BOOK REVIEWS

Superpowers and Super comics

Comics and graphic novels of all sorts are extremely important to our culture and storytelling. People are often a little snooty about the value of comics and comic book art for children. Far from being a poor-relation to ‘proper books’, comics are a wonderful art form in their own right. Comic books seem to have inspired many of today’s greatest writers, often making a far greater impression than studying the classics at school. Even a child who has read Dickens and Austen will be missing out if they aren’t also introduced to illustrated tales of superpowers and of great battles between good and evil.

Superpowerless

By Chris Priestley Hot Key Books £7.99

Superpowerless is one of the most original and extraordinary Young Adult novels we’ve read in a long time. It is dark and powerful. We follow the life of David, a teenager, still grieving the sudden loss of his father while simultaneously negotiating adolescence. He takes refuge is his dad’s collection of comics, and his own ‘otherlife’ as the superhero who is determined to save a man from drowning in a sinking car. Chris Priestley’s own illustrations add layers and shadows to the narrative, linking it directly to the comic books to which his character, David clings. When seen through his own mind, David is not the morose, repressed and annoying teenager that the world sees. He is more complex and far more powerful than that. As a portrait of a teenage mind, Superpowerless hits you hard – for an adult it makes uncomfortable reading, but is illuminating and undeniably brilliant. To the teenagers we’ve sold this book to it is fascinating, and something of a relief. We have come to ridicule and insult teenagers for their shift to introspection and their rebellious criticism of the adult world. But in doing so we lose sight of the sheer power that drives teenage thought. Teenagers don’t think that they are ridiculous. To the middle-aged woman who is writing these reviews (and probably to the ones who are reading it), middle-aged men are far more ridiculous than teenage boys.

Kid Normal

By Greg James and Chris Smith Bloomsbury £6.99

When Murph Cooper rocks up to his new school several weeks into the beginning of term, he can't help but feel a bit out of his depth. It's not because he's worried about where to sit, and making friends, and fitting in, or not knowing where the loos are. It's because his mum has enrolled him at a school for superheroes by mistake. Unlike his fellow students, who can all control the weather or fly or conjure tiny horses from thin air, Murph has no special abilities whatsoever. But just because you don't have superpowers, it doesn't mean you can't save the day. Let's hope Murph realises that, and quick - because not far away is a great big bad guy who is half man and half wasp, and his mind is buzzing with evil plans. Never underestimate the power of one small but determined person! A fun book, brought to life by splendid and energetic illustrations.

26

Tamsin and the Deep

By Neill Cameron and Kate Brown The Phoenix £9.99

Tamsin and the Deep is a mystically-charged adventure that began life as a weekly comic strip in The Phoenix. When Tamsin unwisely goes into the water out of spite to her big brother Morgan who is ignoring her, she is unaware of the danger lurking in the sea caves deep below. Drawing on the original and disturbing fairy tales of The Little Mermaid and the shape-shifting sirens of European mythology, the story becomes one of old magic and forgotten family curses – a curse that has something to do with their father. Tamsin is haunted by vivid dreams of trying to escape an evil water spirit and a painful sense of foreboding that any contact with the sea at all will hold grave danger for her brother. Kate Brown’s illustrations capture the drama unfolding; and offer a real sense of the unease and fear. For kids who have not yet learned to love comics, this is a great starting point!

The Knight Who Took All Day By James Mayhew Graffeg £6.99

This is something for much younger readers, from the wonderful James Mayhew whose Ella Bella Ballerina and Katie at the National Gallery books are so loved by kids and adults alike. This is a new adventure, set in a faraway land. Although this knight is trying very hard to be a story-book hero, he is foolish. He longs to impress the golden-haired princess with his extraordinary talents. When a terrible firebreathing dragon arrives and threatens to destroy the kingdom, the knight begins to prepare for battle. But will he be ready in time? Unfortunately, this is The Knight Who Took All Day, and what ensues is an hilarious cautionary tale about the dangers of showing off. James Mayhew’s ability to combine storytelling flair and gorgeous illustration creates something supernaturally wonderful.

Maus

Art Spiegelman Penguin £16.99

Maus tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe. Maus is remarkable, accessible and a very important book. Presenting the story as a comic, in which the Nazis are cats and the Jews mice, shocks us out of any sense of familiarity and draws us closer to the bleak heart of the Holocaust. It achieves more power in this form than words alone could manage – particularly for a young audience who now have little direct connection to the events of either World War. Maus was first published as a serialised comic strip from 1980 onwards, after its author, Art Spiegelman, interviewed his father about his experiences during WWII. It was a real game-changer as far as comic books go. After Maus was published, comic books could be about anything. Maus will give older children and young adults a crucial lesson about humanity’s ability to be drawn to the dark side.
