Hello My name is stephanie and I am the editor of this issue. I have always been a lover of all things beauty and fashion. I share my own tips and tricks on my personal YouTube channel as stephanie alfaro With this magazine I wanted to create something where everyone can see diversity and uniqueness withing each page. The purpose of this magazine is to inform but not to tell you how to look or what trends to follow.

E

ver since we were both little girls, and although she is younger than I, I respect and sometimes look up to my younger sister Giselle. Giselle is currently eighteen years old, about to graduate high school, getting ready to start her college career and creating the beginning of her own future.

I wanted to create this story because in my eyes, my younger sister, Giselle, is one of the strongest young woman that I know. I decided to sit down with Giselle and ask her some tough questions that she was happily ready to answer and give her own advise on.

Years ago when she first went through all of this she talked about wanting to create a video or something to let other people know what she went through. She wanted to do this not for pity or anything like that, but she wanted to show people that it is possible to go through what she went and continue living a pretty normal life afterwards.

Let me just cut to the chase. When Giselle was about 12 years old after a physical, she was diagnosed with Scoliosis. As a family and being close to Giselle we were able to notice before hand that Giselle had a sort of bend, its kind of difficult to explain but when she would stand up straight she did not look like she was completely straight. My mother was actually the first one that noticed that her daughter, Giselle always seemed to look like she was crooked. I know, it sounds weird and especially feels weird styping this and reading it through but imagine a noodle. Noodles are usually straight like our spines. Well her spine was like a slightly curved noodle, thus causing her to seem unbalanced , or shorter when standing straight.

What Is Scoliosis?

The official documented definition of Scoliosis as stated by mayoclinic.org is as follows, “Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. While Scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most Scoliosis is unknown. About 3% of adolescents have Scoliosis.”

Most people diagnosed with Scoliosis only have a mild form that can be checked on as a child grows. Most likely if Scoliosis is found early in a child then the spine deformality will get worse as the child ages. Things like formally fitted uniquely made braces help stop the spine from curving at a faster speed.

Severe Scoliosis can cause disability.

This would occur with the curving of the spine making the amount of space within the chest, then causing difficulty to the lungs to function properly.

To prevent Scoliosis from getting so severe, once a child is diagnosed they stay regularly monitored by a doctor to limit the spinal curving as much as possible. This is done through X-rays, to be fully able to detect a possible curve. In Most cases no medical treatment is necessary other than a brace as explained before. In more advanced or worse cases, surgery might be needed to keep the Scoliosis from worsening and to straighten severe cases of Scoliosis.

Signs and symptoms of scoliosis may include: Uneven shoulders, one shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other, uneven waist, one hip higher than the other

Although us as a family were able to realize that Giselle had a curve, we honeslty never actually associated that with scoliosis, or with it having something to do with her spine. It wasn’t until She had her yearly physical and the doctor, like usual check the basics and then ask us to bend as they check our spine.

It was during this particular physical where the doctor suspected that Giselle had a wavy spine, that meaning that scoliosis was a possibility for her. At this time I was in the room, since Giselle and I had our physical scheduled at the same time.

Neither did I or my parents actually know anyone who suffer with scoliosis so this was new territiry for all of us.

I want to include some text directly from the scoliosis queen herself so throughout you will see some questions answered directly by her.

How did it feel being diagnosed?

After finding out about this I felt as if I didn’t know the body that I was in anymore. I was scared but mostly in shock. Nobody in my family had been diagnosed with this ever and I didn’t know what to expect. I remember wondering, why me? Whats the cause? In general after that I was more cautious with my body. It’s weird becasue I was fine one day and happily living life and then boom the next day, i’m worrying about my body image and hated how I looked. This ended up making me feel very insecure and embarassed. I don’t think many people knew how I was feeling at the time but it hit me pretty hard.

It all happened so fast, going from multiple doctor appointment and before I knew it I had an appointment scheduled for surgery immediately. Most people get diagnosed with scoliosis like my younger sister, Alexa, who at the moment is only wearing a brace, but unfortunately, or fortunately, I am still not sure which is better,, I already had a 40 degree angle (I believe thats what they told me.) I was ready for surgery.

How was surgery?

The day of my surgery, my parents came with me and we drove a little over to hours to the childrens hospital where my surgery was scheduled. After anxiously waiting, I was taken

back and fully put on medication to be put to sleep in a dark room with nothing but my own robe on. After this I am unable to remember any of the surgery process since I was completely asleep and didn’t feel anything until after I woke up.

I remember waking up all swollen, like extremely swollen. I think this was from being on meds and being upside down, looking back at it I looked very funny, but at the time super painful and scary. I remember staying in the hospital for three days. I got multiple shots, medications daily, and nurses always coming to check up on me. To make it worse I had a fever the whole three days as well. I soon then was discharged to go home, and although in pain I was excited.

I just love them. Going through my surgery and having to change how I dress changed a bit but I was still able to keep my love for accessories.

Clothing on the other hand is where my style has changed the most. Throughout the whole process of the surgery I had to start wearing sweatpants, leggings, t-shirts, and anything comfy. I love feeling comfortable in my own clothing but it was a big transition from being able to wear jeans and skin tight clothing to mostly baggy. I remember not wearing any shirts that exposed my back scar or shirts with zippers in the back that made me feel uncomfortable.

Now I still get a bit uncomfortable when it comes to showing my scar but I am slowly gaining the confidence. I am able to dress up now whenever I want to, wear jeans, and pretty much wear what I desire. I would call my style casual, I don’t stick to one look, I just wear what I like.

When it comes to beauty I say that everyone is unique and beautiful. I think my older sister, Stephanie, got the makeup talent in the family. I personally do like using a bit to make me feel ready for the day but makeup is not a huge role in my style. I like to say that

“BEAUTY COMES FROM WITHIN.”

When it comes to beauty anything that makes you feel beautiful is how you should look.

Now I am doing nothing, I feel okay especially now that I am more open to it especially to my parents, I do not have to hide it anymore and I feel the relief.

1920’s

In the 1920’s the first artificial makeup look was created. with the creation came new looks, like dark eyes with lots of mascara, red lips showing off the cupids bow, downwards arched brows and the pale complextion continued being big. Blusher was also used on the cheeks.

Women were able to expose themselves within their clothing . dresses were more flowy less form fitting and arms were able to show.

1900’s Pale was the desired shade for women in the 1900’s the main thing was having paler skin and or lighter makeup in order to seem rich. people with darker skin tones were considered lower class. Without many types of makeup products people would create thier own by using natural ingredients for beauty. A natural and youthful look was ideal.

The ideal fashion item for women were long flowy but fitting dresses.

Makeup really evolved in the sixties. Thicker brows were coming back in style. eyeliner was widely used among women. False lashes were also used to create a big open eye, placed on the top and bottom lashes. Instead of the darker bold looks women wore lighter pink shaded lips.

Womens fashion in the 60’s included shorter dresses. Women mostly wore more formal looking attire and form fitting clothing.

1980’s

Colorful that is one work that I can use to describe the 80’s Makeup included dark pink lips colorful eyes heavy blush. Eyebrows were at a natural state and big curly or heavily teases hair was the style.

Looking at fashion the styles were just as colorful. The 80’s were the free years for men and women to wear what they wanted. there were baggy pants, headbands, biker shorts, crop tops, leotards, high socks, sporty more casual wear and just anything colorful.

2000’s

In the 200’s very thin barely there and pencil drawn brown were back and this time with an arch. very minimal foundation and base makeup were used. Heavy eyeliner and glittery eyeshadow or the smokey eye were two big eye looks from the 2000’s. lips were more pink and natural and blush was still highly used. bell bottom or loose low waist fitting jeans were the look. tube tops. and tank tops were used as well as layering of many shirts became a look. the ideal body type was very skinny. pairing dressy shirts with baggy jeans was huge. and we can’t leave out the sneakers!

2020

The 2020’s qux=ickly got rid of the thin brows and now natural faux hair like brows are in style. We went from more natural to full glam looks in the 20’s. Full glam includes full coverage base face products, many creative makeup looks, false lashes, contour, and even lip fillers, or the illusion of fuller lips. overall makeup is more artistic and airbrushed looking.

Makeup is now not mainly worn for acceptance but more as a hobby or for fun.

2020’s fashion is a mixture of other decades. we see the biker shorts coming back from the 80’s high waisted mom jeans from the 90’s , crop tops, etc. one change is the ideal body type which is now the hourclass figure.
