Color of Love Inspirational Black Power Couples WRITTEN BY: GEORGE DIKE

F

ebruary is Black History Month. It is also the month of love, and what better way to celebrate both occasions than to remember and honor our Black couples who are leading examples for couples to follow. First, we celebrate Black Power couples who have shown the importance of love and togetherness in fighting for justice and equality. These couples have contributed to the Black community, and their legacy lives in today’s society. From Raymond and Rosa Parks to Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King, here are our top 3 Black Couples who helped shape the History of African Americans. Raymond and Rosa Parks On December 18, 1932, Raymond Parks married Rosa McCauley. Rosa Parks was arrested on December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give her seat to a white male passenger on a segregated bus upon the bus driver’s demands. Four days later, on December 5, the Montgomery Bus Boycott began and lasted 381 days. Mrs. Parks’ courage catapulted her into world history, where she is affectionately referenced as the “Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement.” Raymond Parks backed his wife’s fight against inequality. They urged young people to seek a high education to support themselves and their families and end prejudice in the United States. Mrs. Rosa Parks co-founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development in February 1987 in honor of Raymond Parks (1903–1977). It is the legacy of two people who dedicated their lives to advancing civil and human rights.
