RARE AVIATION BOOKS – CATALOGUE 4: AUTUMN 2023

UNIT AND SQUADRON HISTORIES

Rare Aviation Books is a specialty bookshop located in Sydney Australia, with a large stock of books, manuscripts, magazines, ephemera and realia relating to the history of flight. The business was founded in 2014 by Professor Marshall Silver, a geotechnical engineer with a lifelong passion for the history of aeronautics. We take some pride in both the rarity and condition of our books and other collectible items.

We are the only antiquarian booksellers in the world with an exclusive focus on aviation, and are well positioned to assist in collection development. Despite the specialised nature of the business, our stock encompasses a diverse range of materials, from children’s books and adventure stories through to technical manuals and engineering resources.

Our shopfront is located in the heart of Sydney at Argyle Place in the historical Rocks district, within easy walking distance of Circular Quay and Wynyard train stations. All visitors are welcome, but we do ask you to ring ahead to ensure the business is attended.

We have several thousand volumes stored offsite in Sydney, and are happy to arrange for inspection of these books prior to purchase. Fresh material is regularly added to our website.

Given the international scope of aviation history, we are proud to stock books in a wide range of languages including French, German, and Italian. Our bookstore manager, Ms. Clotilde Lancereau, is a native French speaker and can actively assist with the acquisition of rare French language books and manuscripts.

Customer satisfaction is our priority, and we are pleased to announce recent membership in the Australian and New Zealand Association of Antiquarian Booksellers.

1. Parramatta and District Ministers’ Association. A United Intercessory Prayer Service on the Eve of the Departure of the Troops for South Africa, will be held in the Wesleyan Church, Parramatta, on Sunday Evg., January 14th, at 8.30 p.m.

Parramatta: Cumberland Argus Printing Works, 1899. Single printed sheet measuring 138 x 208 mm. Very good condition.

Rare ephemeral notice relating to the departure of Australian troops for the Second Boer War in South Africa in 1899.

This sheet invites members of the Parramatta Wesleyan congregation to meet for a special service dedicated to troops, to ‘pray for divine protection of our contingent and for success of British Arms’.

The service was organised and administered by Reverend James Edward Carruthers (1848-1932), a vigorous Wesleyan circuit preacher who travelled widely throughout New South Wales before establishing himself in Parramatta. A gifted preacher and ardent nationalist, Revered Carruthers organised the service amidst widespread public excitement about the Transvaal War. The sheet announces hymns to be sung during the service include ‘Before Jehova’s Awful Throne’ and ‘Kipling’s Recessional Hymn’.

Ephemeral printing of this type is unlikely to survive, and unsurprisingly we have not been able to locate any institutional holdings of this sheet. $250, item #KC3107

He writes ‘in hard fights I got to know the reckless, brave boys whose insignia was a kicking mule painted on the fuselage of their planes... the amusing little donkey which came sometimes so close to me that I could see him kicking up his heels, and although he sometimes did this in an unmannerly and well-aimed way at my red Fokker, I somehow always continued to feel kindly toward him.’

5. FAIREY, Eric

The 38th Battalion A.I.F. The Story and Official History of the 38th Battalion A.I.F. Foreword by Rt. Hon. W.M. Hughes, Prime Minister of Australia.

Bendigo: printed for the 38th Battalion History Committee by the Bendigo Advertiser, 1920.

Octavo, original illustrated limp cloth wrappers; [viii], 110 pp., with a total of 18 numbered plates.

Head of spine moderately bumped, wrappers a bit thumbed, internally in very good order and an attractive copy overall.

A scarce and significant Australian Battalion history, here offered in original illustrated cloth wrappers.

The plate count of this book is a trifle confusing. A total of eighteen numbered plates are listed but there is no mention of plate ten, which is absent from the series. However, an additional portrait plate captioned “Officers Commanding the 38th Battalion” is present, directly following the unpaginated preliminary leaves. Basically, this copy is complete as issued and the discrepancy is evidently an editorial anomaly.

This book is of some importance as both a narrative of the Battalion, and as a visual record of the Australian Infantry Forces in France, Gibraltar and Wallonia (Belgium).Images of special interest include fighting at Armentieres; the makeshift cemetery of the 38th at Ploegsteert in Belgium; Hill 63 battlefield at Ploegsteert; Lille Gate at Ypres and other images of fighting in the vicinity; Gibraltar defences; a group portrait of NCO’s at Neuve dated January 1918; Marrett and Vaux Wood battlefields; an improvised bridge across the Somme River near Corbie; the Battalion band and men at rest near Hamilton Wood; and men of “C” Company at the Hindenburg Line.

This Battalion History includes a full list of Honours, including DSO, MC, DCM, Croix de Guerre and Meritorious Service Awards. Men mentioned in despatches are also listed. Of special biographical interest is a twenty-page list of officers who joined the 38th from other Battalions - grim testimony to the appalling casualty rates of officers on the front line.

6. FIRKINS, Peter

Strike and Return The story and exploits of No. 460 R.A.A.F. Heavy Bomber Squadron, R.A.F. Bomber Command in the World War.

Perth: Paterson Brokensha, [1964].

Octavo, original pale blue cloth, illustrated endpapers, 200 pp., photo plates. Some rubbing at spine ends, some foxing on rear endpaper, cloth a slight flecked, otherwise a very good copy.

First edition of the standard history of 460 Heavy Bomber Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force. This original printing has become scarce, although the book has been re-issued twice since its publication in the mid-sixties. The author, Peter Firkins, joined the R.A.A.F. at seventeen years of age and completed a tour of operations with 460 Squadron. As such, his history blends strategic and tactical information with a more personal and intimate life of Australian airmen on active service in Europe.

As noted in the introduction, the heady and often reckless lifestyle of these men reflected their chances of survival. The odds of surviving a full operational tour in Bomber Command were approximately 2.5:1. It was a life of both extreme violence and hedonism: ‘at two o’clock in the morning they would be flying through the fiercest artillery barrage a night fighter defence system ever devised. A few hours later they could be in the arms of a lover, or watching a glamorous theatrical show, or drinking beer in the enchanting surroundings of an Old English inn.’

7. FORBES-LEITH, William

The Scots Men-at-Arms and Life-Guards in France From their formation until their dissolution A.D. MCCCCXVIII - MDCCCXXX. With etched plates by Major H. de Grandmaison.

Edinburgh: William Paterson, 1882.

Two volumes, large quarto. Volume one: [xiv], 10-196 pp., 21 engraved plates and five vignettes (including the frontispiece). Volume two: [x], facsimile muster roll of eight leaves, 232 pp., five engraved plates and four vignettes.

Vol I: 21 engraved plates. Vol II: 5 engraved plates. A little rubbed and one corner bumped, yet a beautifully presented set from the library of Sir William Strang Steel, with his bookplates.

Scarce limited edition. This is copy No. 292 of 312, with etchings printed on Holland paper.

The purpose of these volumes is to shed new light on the diplomatic relations and negotiations between Scotland and France from 1418 to 1444, being the last chapter of the Hundred Years’ War. The armed conflicts originated from disputed claims to the French throne between the English House of Plantagenet and the French House of Valois. Over time, the war grew into a broader power struggle involving factions and kingdoms from across Western Europe.

From 1418 onwards, diplomatic negotiations between Scotland and France ended with the landing of Scottish troops in France, among whom were members of powerful Scottish aristocratic families, as shown in the muster rolls reproduced herein.

These two volumes present a history of two Scottish companies: the Scots Men-atArms (1416-1652) and the Scots Life-Guards (1425-1791). They were compiled using records from chronicles and memoirs, state papers and manuscripts in the British Public Records Office and in the archives of the French Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.

The Australian Contingent. A History of the Patriotic Movement in New South Wales and an Account of the Despatch of Troops to the Assistance of the Imperial Forces in the Soudan.

Octavo, contemporary polished half calf, gilt spine with simple ornamental bands and label, [iv], 286 pp.

Bound without the half-title page, spine panel chipped with localised loss, edges and preliminaries foxed.

The preface captures some of the frenzied sentiment surrounding the departure of the Sudan contingent: ‘It was unquestionably the death of the heroic but ill-starred General Gordon that furnished the first impulse that has sent 800 Australians to help to avenge, or to share his fate. The story of his desperate mission to Khartoum, and its disastrous end, is of course all too fresh and ineffaceable in men’s memories to need recounting...’

15. MITCHELL, William

Winged Defense. The Development and Possibilities of Modern Air Power - Economic and Military.

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1925. Octavo, original green cloth, frontispiece, xxiv, 262 pp., 15 photo plates. The head of the spine is a little snagged and torn, but a very good copy.

William Mitchell was an innovative and highly outspoken pioneer US military aviator. His father was a US Senator and his grandfather was a distinguished officer in the US Civil War. As a young military officer, he served and fought wars in the Philippines and insurrections along the Mexican border. He introduced radio and automobile equipment into the US Army as early as 1914. In June 1916, he took private flying lessons at the Curtiss Flying School because he was proscribed by law from military aviator training by age and rank.

As the youngest member of the US War Department General Staff, he became an advocate of an independent air force. During the First World War he became Chief of the Air Service. After the war he began disturbing many people with his theories regarding the coming air age, many of which were proved in 1921 with the sinking of the ex-German battleship Ostfriesland off the Virginia Capes by the use of aircraft. For his outspoken criticism of military policy, he was court-martialled in 1925 for speaking against the Army for investing in battleships instead of aircraft carriers. Following this famous event, he resigned in 1926, to continue writing and speaking out on aviation matters, until his death in 1936. All of his writings are important as a predictor of the successful use of airpower in World War II. This book is scarce due to its concurrent publication during his court-martial.
