SAUDADE E O QUE É POSSÍVEL FAZER COM AS MÃOS A palavra “saudade”, a primeira parte do título desta exposição individual de Raquel Versieux, pode ser relacionada de modo amplo à sua pesquisa. Com cerca de dez anos de percurso, a artista investiga a relação entre corpo humano e paisagem em diversas técnicas e operações de construção de imagens. A fotografia e a criação de objetos tridimensionais são alguns dos interesses mais frequentes em seus trabalhos. É possível afirmar que sua pesquisa cria pequenas narrativas em torno da relação existencial entre aquilo que é humano e aquilo que pode ser apreendido (na perspectiva antropocêntrica) como um espaço da natureza. Essa relação, porém, não se dá de modo romântico como uma lamentação em torno de um encontro que um dia teria sido harmônico; muito pelo contrário, as imagens de Versieux mais parecem apontar para a impossibilidade de se apreender racionalmente esse namoro perverso entre pele e terra.

Distante de qualquer literalidade quanto ao modo como o espectador deve se relacionar com as imagens, sua pesquisa deseja que nosso olhar se debruce sobre suas proposições e perpetue o seu próprio estranhamento perante os muitos organismos dotados de vida que constituem esse mundo que nos foi ensinado como “nosso” e que tem como nome próprio essa palavra que designa o solo firme. Penso, portanto, que a saudade que pode brotar de sua produção artística não deve ser vista como uma unidade estanque, mas como uma coleção de pequenas saudades que são proporcionais tanto ao seu próprio trânsito por diversos lugares, quanto à falta que se sente logo no momento posterior à finalização de algo novo.

No caso desta exposição, estas saudades parecem estar relacionadas a dois espaços específicos. O primeiro deles é a região do Cariri, no estado do Ceará, área de forte sol e clima seco onde está localizada a cidade de Juazeiro do Norte, lugar em que a artista tem vivido nos últimos meses onde trabalha como professora universitária. O outro espaço é o México, país onde realizou uma residência recentemente na capital e que deixou marcas afetivas e antropológicas novas em seu olhar, mente e coração. A partir desses sentimentos de falta, a artista explora diferentes linguagens em torno daquilo que “é possível fazer com as mãos”. Seu olhar lançado sobre a paisagem local se transformou em cliques fotográficos que exploram diferentes aspectos de seu entorno. O tom de amarelo dos maracujás caídos sobre um terreno encontrado ao acaso é acompanhado por cores mais frias de coqueiros que, para além de ainda estarem em pé, não apresentam grandes traços de vitalidade. Essas imagens se apresentam de modo mais icônico para o espectador e se diferem, por exemplo, da série de registros do Araripe – chapada que divide as fronteiras dos estados de Ceará, Pernambuco e Piauí – que a artista explorou diariamente de carro e capturou imagens tanto da passagem do tempo, quanto de detalhes de sua pesquisa direta com a terra. Um dos modos de se lidar com a saudade, portanto, é a fotografia e seu potencial de fazer lembrar um momento específico de uma experiência física.

Vivendo em um lugar em que as tradições ceramistas são extensas e onde os espaços abertos de paisagem possibilitam a exploração tanto do barro, quanto de rochas milenares, parece natural a opção de Raquel em também explorar esses elementos em seus novos trabalhos. Não podemos nos esquecer, porém, de sua constante utilização da terra e referência a aspectos geológicos do solo em outros de seus trabalhos em que a erosão é elemento central. Esse interesse na passagem do tempo – seja o pré-histórico, seja o da gestação de uma fruta – se faz presente nos objetos aqui mostrados e criam diálogos com suas fotografias.

A artista comprou cocos e carnaúbas, dividiu-os em duas partes e fez algumas incursões escultóricas com argila diretamente sobre elas. Os fragmentos se transformaram em moldes para a sua ação e retornaram à aparência de um círculo deformado semelhante a seu formato original. Uma vez queimadas no forno, essas peças carregam em sua superfície uma variedade de tonalidades e de texturas relativas ao espaço em que foram repousadas para secar – o chão do carro da artista. Do alto dos coqueiros para aquilo que pode ser encontrado nas montanhas ou mesmo abaixo de nossos pés, a artista apresenta também cinco objetos semelhantes a totens (e também a frágeis altares) que sustentam cinco pedras. A altura atingida por essas pedras chega à altura do coração da artista, esse órgão tão precioso quanto esses arenitos que, quando quebrados, escancaram seus cerca de noventa e seis milhões de anos. Se o coração é aquilo que permite com que sigamos vivos e atribuindo algum sentido ao mundo, esses fragmentos de rocha são os elementos que nos fazem constatar que nossas existências são apenas partículas de areia ao vento.

Mais do que o possível de ser feito com as mãos, essa exposição de Raquel Versieux apresenta aquilo que existencialmente se apresentou como necessário de ser criado nesse trânsito entre espaços. A saudade, essa palavra que só existe na língua portuguesa, pode ser vista tanto como um sentimento humano, como algo sentido pela própria natureza. Um coco que é despregado de seu coqueiro sente saudade daquele que foi o seu caule, assim como um resquício de pedra chora sua libertação de uma rocha maior. Enquanto isso, nós, os humanos, sentimos saudades dos lugares que recém-conhecemos e das pessoas que queremos conhecer mais. Como uma vez a própria Raquel me disse e concordei, a saudade que sentimos pode se referir ao próprio presente e ao espaço da própria casa que habitamos. Em um momento histórico em que a experiência do tempo e do real se dá de modo tão fugidio, a nostalgia toma nossos corpos de modo constante. Sintamos, portanto, essa saudade junt_s e, na latência da indefinição do presente, sigamos a criar imagens e aguardar o movimento dos ventos sobre os coqueiros no futuro.

SAUDADE AND WHAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO DO WITH THE HANDS

The word “saudade” [Portuguese word for the sense of missing something or someone], the first part of the title of this solo show by Raquel Versieux, can be related in a wide way to her research.

Already with ten years of career, the artist researches the relation between the human body and the landscape in many techniques and possibilities of composition of images. The photography and the creation of three-dimensional objects are some of the most frequent interests in her works. It’s possible to say that her research creates small narratives around the existential relation between what is human and what is seen (in the anthropocentric perspective) as a space of nature. This relation, although, is not given in a romantic way; quite the opposite, Versieux’s images seems more to show the impossibility to comprehend rationally this perverse relationship between skin and earth.

Far from any literalness regarding the way the viewer should relate to images, her research desires that our look concentrate in her propositions and perpetuate her own estrangement regarding the many organisms full of life that constitute our world. I think, then, that the “saudade” that comes from her artistic production shouldn’t be seen as a tight unity but as a collection of small “saudades” proportional to her own transit through many places and to the sense of missing that comes right after we finish doing something new.

In the case of this show, these “saudades” seem to be related to two specific spaces. The first of them is the Cariri region, in the state of Ceará, area with a strong sun and a dry climate where is situated the city of Juazeiro do Norte, place where the artist has been living for the last months working as a university lecturer. The other space is Mexico, the country where she did a residency recently in the capital that left many affective and anthropological new marks in her gaze, mind and heart.Starting with these sensations of missing, the artist explores different languages around what “is possible to do with the hands”. Her gaze thrown over the local landscape becomes photographs that explore different aspects of her space. The yellow tone of the fallen passionfruits found by accident in a land comes together with the colder colours of the coconuts trees that, besides standing still, doesn’t show big vitality signs. These images are present in a more iconic way to the viewer and are different, for example, of the series of photos of Araripe – the mountain that divides the states of Ceará, Pernambuco and Piauí – that the artist explored daily by car capturing images of the passage of time and of her direct research with the earth. One of the ways, then, to deal with the “saudade” is the photography and its potential to remember a specific moment of a physical experience.

Living in a place where ceramic traditions are huge and where the open spaces of landscape enable the exploration of clay and millennial rocks, it seems natural the option to also explore these elements in her new works. We can’t forget, although, of her constant use of earth as a material and the references to the geological aspects of the soil in other of her works where the

erosion is the central element. This interest in the passage of time – whether the prehistoric, whether the gestation of a fruit – is present in the objects here shown and create dialogues in her photos.

The artist bought coconuts and carnaubas, split them in two and made some sculptural experiences with clay directly over them. The fragments were transformed in models for her action and returned to the appearance of a deformed circle that looked like their original format.

Once they were burn in an oven, these pieces carried in their surface a variety of tones and textures related to the space where they were laid down to dry – the floor of the artist’s car. From the height of the coconut trees to those elements that can be found in mountains or even under our feet, the artist presents also five objects that look like totems holding rocks. The height reached by these rocks get to the height of the artist’s heart, this organ as precious as these rocks. When they are broken, they open wide their age of more than ninety-six million years. If the heart is one of the elements that make possible that our life goes on, these rock fragments are the elements that make us notice that our existences are only particles of sand in the wind.

More than what is possible to do with the hands, this show by Raquel Versieux presents these things that existentially were necessary to be done in these transit between spaces. The “saudade”, this word that only exists in the Portuguese language, can be seen as a human feeling and also as something felt by the nature itself. One coconut that is taken from a coconut tree feels “saudade” (misses) of that thing that one day was his stalk. In the same way, a small part of a rock cries when it’s released from a bigger rock. Meanwhile, we, humans, feel “saudade” of the places that we just known and of the people we want to know more. Raquel told me once (and I agreed) that the “saudade” we feel can refer even to our own present and to the house we live. In a historical moment where the experience of time and of reality is given in a very fugitive way, the nostalgia takes over our bodies in a constant way. Let us feel, then, these “saudades” together and, in the latency of the indefiniteness of the present, let’s keep on creating images and waiting for the movement of the winds over the coconut trees in the future.
