How does Reading Stars Achieve Phonics work?
Evidence shows that teaching phonics is the best way to teach children to read English.
These rigorous books follow the UK Government’s framework for teaching phonics knowledge (Letters and Sounds), but are careful to introduce the learning points very gradually. So, as teachers introduce students to specific letter-sound links (‘grapheme-phoneme correspondences’) and common exception words (e.g. the), they can immediately be reading these books and practising what they’ve learnt.
What’s more, these books are 100% fully decodable at all stages. This develops a ‘phonics reflex’, which in turn leads to more successful independent reading.
We’ve also thought about a lot more than just phonics…
These are specially written (simpler, shorter, repetitive) texts for weaker readers, with a carefully planned upward curve as you move through the phases.
As well as testing GPC/CEW recall, they provide opportunities to read with prosody and to build reading stamina (something often overlooked in the rush to introduce new GPCs).
They also develop broader literacy skills by building sentence complexity and developing vocabulary and comprehension and inference skills i.e. they bring the benefits of a good Book Band programme – all under the umbrella of fully decodable phonics.
Covers fiction and non-fiction, as well as a variety of text types and illustration styles

Not convinced that fully decodable phonics books could ever be appealing reads?
Reading Stars Achieve Phonics covers everything from genuinely fascinating subjects (see The Mystery of the Nazca Lines) to super-creative fiction (see The Sleeping Sickness – the funny yet eerie ‘handwritten’ diary of a boy who thinks there’s something strange going on with people’s sleep).
It also bounces between off-the-wall fun (see How to Stay Alive) and deftly handled topics with real educational value (see Were The Vikings All Bad).
