St. Patrick’s Day Spending to Reach $70 Million in Nevada

Overall Participation at Record Level

Nevada will be going green for St. Patrick’s Day this year. A record number of people are expected to participate in the traditional Irish celebration, bringing all-time high spending with them. The Retail Association of Nevada (RAN) projects spending in the state to hit $70.1 million, based on a survey from the National Retail Federation (NRF). Nationally, 62.0 percent of consumers plan to partake in traditional Irish festivities, with an expected average spending of $44.40 per person — a historic high. The participation rate is up 1.0 percentage point compared to last year, while total spending of $7.2 billion exceeds the previous year by 5.1 percent.

This year’s participation and spending projections would exceed the previous highs set last year, when 61.0 percent of Nevada consumers participated and spent an estimated $66.8 million — 4.9 percentage points less than this year’s projection.

Wearing green takes the spotlight as the primary celebration plan, with 82 percent planning to sport the holiday’s signature color. The second most popular choice is preparing a special dinner, with 29 percent of respondents indicating their intention to do so. Additionally, a significant number of respondents plan to attend a party at a bar or restaurant (27 percent) or decorate their homes or offices (26 percent). Other planned activities include attending a private party (16 percent), joining a parade (15 percent), and hosting a party (12 percent). www.RANNV.org

Party planners and attendees are currently on the hunt for St. Patrick's Day supplies. Among them, 39 percent plan to stop at the grocery store, with another 29 percent opting for budget-friendly choices at the discount store. Meanwhile, 20 percent are planning to splurge at bars or restaurants, while an additional 20 percent are set to visit department stores. For those embracing online convenience, 15 percent are turning to the virtual market to fulfill their needs. Other shopping destinations include small businesses (11 percent), specialty stores (7 percent), specialty clothing stores (7 percent), and drug stores (6 percent).
