Mother’s Day Spending Projected to Set New Record Spending in Nevada to Surpass $574 Million, Up 7.4 Percent When Adjusted for Inflation

This Mother’s Day, Nevada consumers are projected to set a record for spending on gifts and gestures of appreciation for the most important women in their lives. The Retail Association of Nevada (RAN) estimates Mother’s Day spending in the Silver State will reach a record $574.9 million, up 12.7 percent from last year and the second year in a row of record-setting spending. When adjusting for inflation, spending is still up a healthy 7.4 percent from one year ago.

“Despite inflation, Nevada consumers are not holding back on Mother’s Day this year,” said Bryan Wachter, Senior Vice President of RAN. “With the summer months ahead and the guardedly optimistic projections by the Nevada Economic Forum, Nevada retailers are preparing to keep up with summer and fall consumer demands.”

The spending estimates are based on a survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF), which found that 84.0 percent of consumers nationwide plan to celebrate the special day this year. Based on the survey, those celebrating will spend an average of $274.02 per person on gifts that include greeting cards, jewelry, flowers and special outings. The combination of those factors is expected to drive nationwide spending to a record $35.7 billion, a 12.6 percent increase compared to last year. Factoring in inflation, total spending in the United States is up 7.3 percent from $33.3 billion in 2022.

Flowers and greeting cards are the two most popular gifts this year, with 74.0 percent of survey respondents planning give them. In Nevada, spending on flowers is expected to reach $51.3 million, while spending greeting cards will reach $18.6 million. Other popular gifts include a special outing (60.0 percent), which is projected to generate $90.8 million in spending, gift cards (54 percent) totaling $55.2 million in spending, and clothing or accessories (45.0 percent) at $54.0 million in spending. Jewelry (44.0 percent), personal services (34.0 percent), housewares (31.0 percent), books or CDs (28.0 percent), and consumer electronics (25.0 percent) round out the top gifts for Mother’s Day.
