The journeys of strong enduring women and mothers run through the pages of the LCAHouston International Society News Summer Edition. I always say it’s easy to be a brain surgeon, but motherhood is hard! There are no road maps and no guidelines. This issue showcases several prominent women, starting with our cover girl Laura Ward, a mother, grandmother, and a phenomenal role model. As is our summer tradition, we are thrilled to celebrate and honor our 6th Annual International Mothers’ Day Soirée Honorees at the Asia Society Texas Center. Each is a potent blend of female power, beauty, fashion and philanthropy. This Edition also reflects male power in our Men of Style feature, focusing on the Houstonian men who contribute significantly and impact our community. We were very fortunate to have Pitbull perform at the Houston’s Children’s Charity Gala which raised more than $2 million. Our society galas are so much more than just parties. They are larger than life.

As is our summer tradition, we are thrilled to celebrate and honor our 6th Annual International Mothers Day Soirée Honorees at The Asia Society Texas Center. Each is a potent blend of female power, beauty, fashion and philanthropy.

We were also lucky to get insight from New York Fashion Week with brilliant Fashion Editor Clifford Pugh, who shares his 25 years of runway rendezvous. Of course, let’s not forget our Young and Fabulous stars, representing the next generation.

I continue to emphasize how lucky we are to live in a city like Houston, with its rich, culturally diverse people, food, art, and culture. The MFAH’s ‘Peacock In The Desert’ opening night Gala was a magical experience. Houstonians must not miss this magnificent exhibit.

Last, but not the least, our deepest condolences for our beloved First Lady Barbara Bush who passed away on April 17, 2018 at the age of 92. I had the honor of meeting Mrs. Bush, who had an unwavering desire to help others with her innate kindness and piercing wisdom.

As the Editor of this publication and Founder of the International Mothers’ Day Soirée, along with my beloved team of supporters, friends, and family, I continue our mission to bridge the gap between the ethnic and mainstream communities with our stories of courage, lifestyle, and inspiration.

Clifford Pugh a senior journalist and the former Editor-In-Chief of Culturemap, enjoys covering the latest in Houston food, fashion, society, travel, real estate and city life in real time. Pugh had a long journalism career at the Houston Post and Houston Chronicle where he covered fashion shows in New York, Milan, and Paris, as well as presidential inaugurations, political conventions and major events. His claim to journalism fame came at the Vanity Fair Academy Awards party, when screenwriter Alexander Payne asked him to hold his Oscar while he went to the bathroom. Pugh regularly attends New York Fashion Week twice a year to report on the latest trends and new looks from major designers.

Puja Awasthi Puja Awasthi is an independent print and online journalist who has worked with some of India's leading news publications in the last 19 years. A recipient of the prestigious Chevening Fellowship for Young Indian Print Journalists, she has covered gender, politics and development across North India.

An avid traveler and yoga enthusiast, she is currently working on a book that examines women's perspectives on the impact of terrorism.

Dan Mayur Dan Mayur is an engineer and freelance writer. He is a graduate of IIT Bombay, and has a PhD from Rice University. He has worked for Shell Oil and Bechtel in senior capacities in various parts of the world. Mayur is active on the speaker circuit and has presented numerous papers in international conferences. Dan has written four books, “Mumbai to Stockholm via New York – Reflections of a Globetrotter”, “SamajRang”, “Living Dreams” and “The Four Ls – A Memoir.” His interests include writing about people, places, and politics. A global citizen in spirit, he resides in Sugar Land, Texas.

Natalie Galerne Natalie Galerne is a recent graduate of Baylor University and a native Houstonian. Having studied Journalism, she enjoys writing about the many passions of Houston’s diverse community. She is an active advocate for auto immune and chronic pain disorders. Catch her watching indie films, practicing her French, attending garden parties, volunteering with the Junior League and finding new places to brunch.

Krupali Laxmidas Krupali Laxmidas is London-born, Zimbabwe raised, and now a self-proclaimed and proud Houstonian. Krupali studied International Business and Marketing at St. Edward’s University in Austin, and is currently working full time in the field of finance. She is passionate about fashion, travel, and interior design, and recently began blogging to fuel her creative side. She incorporates her experiences from living abroad, and her diverse background, into much of what she writes about.

Blaine Ochoa Blaine Ochoa is the current 2017 Miss Houston First Runner Up, and will be competing for Miss Texas USA in 2018. Blaine has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Communications Studies from Texas State University. She is a professional in the marketing industry, and is also pursuing a career in the music and entertainment business. She has a passion for writing, modeling, traveling, and health and fitness. Blaine has enthusiastically covered several galas and events, and also runs the beauty and fashion column ‘Beauty with Blaine,’ exclusively for LCAHouston Magazine.

LAURA WARD WOMAN OF CHARACTER Known for making an impact as a philanthropist, she is fearless with a mind of her own. Mrs. Ward reveals the quiet confidence that comes with age: A Regal Beauty.

“S

hhhh!, ladies and gentlemen,” commands Laura Ward, President & CEO of Houston Children's Charity, to a 700-plus crowd.

Everyone is eagerly awaiting Pitbull’s performance at the Houston Children’s Charity Annual Gala at billionaire Tilman Frittata’s new Post Oak Uptown Hotel. I am mesmerized by her mere presence, the gorgeous eyes, and stern voice. She has been instrumental in implementing the “Limbs for Life,” “Chariots for Children,” and “A Better Night's Sleep” programs which provide thousands of children with much needed assistance. Laura also assisted in the founding of the “HCC Closet” program, which provides clothing for families in need at absolutely no cost, and the “Back 2 School” program, which has provided more than 13,000 children with backpacks and school supplies since 2005.

Growing up with eight siblings, Laura was raised by a very strong woman who instilled in her the values of sharing, and nurtured her giving spirit. "It was instinctual that what we do is take care of each other," explains Laura. "I have always tried to be the best mom I could. Maybe due to work, I could not give as much time as I wish I could have.”

and contributed her time and expertise to innumerable charitable events.

When Mrs. Ward says she loves something, you are inclined to trust her. It's all in her actions. Whether it is her commitment to lunch with a billionaire, or just keeping her promise to lunch with me, she is a woman of her word.

Laura cuts straight to the chase and speaks her mind. The more you know her, the more you love her. By the way, did I mention that her husband is the legendary television personality, Dave Ward? "Hello! I am Mrs. Ward, Dave Ward's wife," she chuckles. "I have had a great career, have always worked, and don't necessarily want to just have ‘Dave Ward’s Wife’ as my title, but yes, he is a celebrity and I am very proud of him."

If only I could just sit all day and listen to Laura’s many stories about her mother's freshly baked pita bread to her frequent tête-à-tête with Tilman Fretitta. But with a go-gogo schedule, her typical day starts with phone calls about raising funds and meetings till noon, to finally wrapping up around 10 pm every night, she is a whirlwind of activism. "Dave and I are often at Willy G's for dinner to just unwind,” says Laura.

What has made Laura such a power player when it comes to raising funds? She pushes the envelope and tries to do the best that needs to be done. "Keep it personal, involve the community and, keep them informed," she says. "Houston is so philanthropic. There are so many great causes, but I am old fashioned, so I pick up the phone and talk to everyone. With social media there is too much of a distance, a gap. Nurture a relationship, be sincere."

Business Journal’s 2016 Women Who Mean Business Award. The list goes on. "I have always worked, and enjoy doing charity work, but motherhood (and now being a grandmother) is my favorite role,” she adds.

What do you envision for Houston Children's Charity in the coming years? "The future is very bright, it will grow by leaps and bounds and the word is out. We are cause-related and not disease-related." What began as a fundraiser for her children, to raise $5 a head for a spaghetti dinner in high school, and after thirty years and over $70 million later, her passion to help children in need ranks her amongst the leading fundraising executives.

But what was the pressure in organizing such a large gala with Pitbull? "A tremendous amount of coordination.

Dave has known Tilman for a very long time, and I met him in 1991. Then he joined the board of the Houston Children's Charity and we are very thankful to make Pitbull happen." Laura doesn't consider herself a fashion darling. She calls her style understated and simple, but yes, she did add plenty of sparkle to the gala this year as a tribute to Mr. WorldWide.

A true leader that never fails to apologize when needed, Laura Ward has bagged numerous awards and accolades including Women of Distinction, Greater Houston Women's Hall of Fame, and The Cancer League's “Pacesetter of the Year Award.” She has also served as the Event Advisor for Baylor College of Medicine – The Partnership Magic of Motown. In 2016 she was honored with the Leiv Platou Crime Stoppers Award, and was recognized with the Houston

From the highs and the lows, from heels to flats, from the simple joys of motherhood and companionship, Laura beams with contentment to just sit in her patio, enjoying the roses in her garden while cooking her fried chicken (it’s the best). The untamed flame of passion devoted to her mission comes from the belief that ‘need never takes a vacation’. A creature of habit, with little time to cultivate new friendships, Laura is a private person with perseverance and an unwavering dedication to provide for children in need. She is humble, strong willed, and has a contagious enthusiasm.

he vibrant colors, rich fabrics, romantic landscapes, and grand architecture most often associated with India in advertisements, magazines, and even

by Indian Tourism campaigns, come from the State of Rajasthan. It is home to Maharajas and Maharanis from the romanticized cities of Jaipur, Jaisalmer, and Udaipur, where the royal houses have ruled over their domains for centuries. A little splash of colorful India just arrived in Houston.

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston recently unveiled its latest, and perhaps most extravagant exhibit to date called “Peacock In the Desert: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India” on March 2, 2018 at a Gala in The Caroline Wiess Law Building. This dazzling array of jewelry, fashion, and vehicles are on display courtesy of His Highness Maharaja Gaj Singh II of Marwar-Jodhpur.

Guests were treated to a preview of the Maharaja’s private collection which included a Rolls Royce Phantom, an array of weapons and jewelry, and even a 1944 L-5 Sentinel aircraft.

A cocktail reception was followed by a lavash dinner which featured Indian inspired cuisine, prepared by City Kitchen, which included Braised Lamb Shank Korma and Grilled Sea Bass. For dessert, guests enjoyed Pistachio and Vanilla Kulfi (ice-cream).

court musicians, Musicians of the Desert, performed classical pieces for attendees, and His Highness spoke eloquently about the exhibit and the MFAH. Gary Tinterow, director of the Museum, thanked Museum trustees and exhibition donors including Nidhika and Pershant Mehta, the Lead Exhibition Underwriters.

Guests were spotted in extravagant traditional Indian attire. However we all know that whenever there is a MFAH gala event Houston is eagerly awaiting to see ‘What did Nidhika wear?’ Well she as usual did not disappoint us.

Our very own Nidhika Mehta wore a breathtaking traditional royal lehenga, a nod to Rani Padmini, the Rajput queen with charming heavy jewellery. A lot of gota patti work was seen on the lehenga.

The credit goes to designer duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula for making Mrs. Mehta look the part.

FEELING SO EXOTIC WITH PURA WINES AND FOOD PAIRINGS

O

ne thing that makes Houston unique is without a doubt, our diverse food scene. With so many amazing cuisines from the bold flavors of South America to the spices of Southeast Asia, Houstonians have plenty of restaurants to choose from any night of the week.

We joined Cindy Yang and Eduardo Varas of Pura Wines, who whisked us off on a food and wine adventure across the City. The duo began a business importing Chilean wines from boutique, family-owned vineyards, and today their wine portfolio spans multiple wineries and countries in South America. Eduardo – a native Chilean living here in Houston – explains, “Chile is currently producing so many high quality wines, but the market here hasn’t discovered them yet. We want to introduce those truly unique wines to our customers here in the US.” Our first stop was Patagonia Bar & Grill, a laid-back but buzzing Argentinian steak house. We started with classic fish ceviche served on a bed of mango & red onions with citrus, paired with a Pura 8 Chardonnay from Rapel Valley in Chile. Next we sampled some Argentinian beef empanadas with a Loica Cabernet Sauvignon from the Central Valley of Chile. To finish our meal, the famous “entraña” steak arrived with the restaurant’s namesake wine: Patagonia, a Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina.

We then met up with the guru of exotic flavor, Chef Kiran Verma, at her beautiful new location on Richmond: Kiran’s. A long time Houston institution, many of us are familiar with her classic Indian dishes with a few modern twists. We started with the famous lamb samosas, bursting with cumin scented ground lamb and a slight sweetness from raisins, which we opted to pair with a Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from Pura 8. In order to try a variety of dishes, we ordered the popular Punjabi Thali dish which is an Indian-style meal consisting of various dishes served on a single platter. Chef Kiran’s version had Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Rogan Josh, and Saag Paneer served with saffron basmati rice pulao with nuts. Considering the many flavors in this Thali, we wanted a wine that could stand up to all these spices in the curries. The Top Winemakers 50 Barrels Carmenere was a winning combination with its spice notes and a dry, medium bodied finish.

This inspiring, hard working, fun loving couple is one who gives back to the community, enjoys life to the fullest, and are an impeccable example of a successful marriage full of laughter and compassion.

Vipul hails from New Delhi and Geeta is from Chandigarh, India. The couple came to the United States in 2002 pursuing the American dream. Together they founded Vertex Consulting and co-share the CEO title of this successful company.

When asked what it’s like to own a business together Vipul answered, it’s important to “understand each other as business parents and not just partners.”

The company, “is our baby, we have to encourage each other daily. It sounds funny but it does enhance our marriage.

Being a husband and wife, and working together, you have to resolve your problems yourself.” Geeta says, “there are good days and bad days, but you have to learn to overcome. We each have different roles within the company, and we each have our own strengths; which we have to capitalize on.” Overall the couple says, “it’s great to own a business together.”

The sari’s history can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization. To some it’s daily wear but for most the sari is an elaborate fancy affair attire. Westerners rave about the handwoven cotton, silks chiffons and georgette fabrics decorated with ornate embroidery and prints.

Phoebe Tudor The impeccably stylish, successful and philanthropic Phoebe Tudor always looks stunning. Whether decked out in an Oscar de la Renta evening gown or in an elegant Indian sari, which she wore at the MFAH Peacock In The Desert gala, she’s always turning heads.

Indian cinema, aka Bollywood, has played a vital role in revamping the sari. In classic Hindi movies such as ‘Silsila’ or ‘Chandini’ actress’ Rekha and Sridevi made the plain georgette sari the signature trademark of Bollywood by dancing in the rain or in the mountains of Switzerland.

The recent period movie ‘Padmavat’ brought back the heavy lehengas and Bernarsi silks. Saris will never go out of style. It’s astounding to see the sari as a timeless piece amongst generations, races and color.

This feature is a tribute to the legendary Indian actress Sridevi whose sudden death shocked everyone.

She was the epitome of Indian fashion draped in the most gorgeous saris.

Asha Dhume Pratham Houston President Asha Dhume is known for her tireless efforts to raise funds for Pratham, a non profit organization dedicated to eradicating illiteracy in India.

There is one more thing she is proud to be known for; her love for saris and Bollywood. Mrs. Dhume has almost never repeated a sari. “I think I have somewhere between 500 to 800 and counting in my 27 years of collection,” shares Asha. She cherishes each and every piece that she has collected from all over India.

y earliest sari memories feature my grandmothers in their easy, fuss free cottons. I never saw them wear anything but saris and do not register any discomfort that they might have displayed as they went about household chores and celebrations with equal ease. My strongest sari influencer was however my mother. A wellloved doctor, she had a sari collection as expansive as her popularity. From hand spun Benarsis and intricately embroidered kanthas, and from magical hazar bootis to striking madras checks, she had them all and wore them with aplomb. During the nine days of fasting for Navratri, she would wear new saris every morning and evening, no matter how rushed her hours were.

Saris taught me that there are no rights or wrongs. That I should feel unapologetically perfect in my present form. Today as I wear them everywhere from conferences to cocktails- adding a belt here, a blazer there, I repeatedly get asked how I manage them. It's a question, I don't understand.

Over the years I have joyfully gifted saris- pre-loved and new to friends and family, firm in my belief in their timelessness. I would love to imagine I have converted a few to wearing them. Philanthropy Spotlight: Susan Boggio

A

midst Houston’s scene of movers and shakers lives Susan Boggio. Sunny and passionate, she lives and breathes for the causes that fill her heart.

I’ve seen her picture in PaperCity and anyone who’s anyone knows she was an ABC 13 Women of Distinction honoree in 2011. Just this spring, she was honored as the 2018 AniMeals on Wheels Champion for strongly supporting the Meals on Wheels Seniors, which supplies pet food for the Animeals program. But today, Mrs. Boggio opens up to me about her experience with Pace Universal in Kolkata and why it has strongly impacted her life.

Mrs. Boggio generously spends her time benefiting both domestic and international causes close to her heart, like Interfaith Ministries and UNICEF, for which she currently serves as chairman of the board for the southwest region. Interfaith Ministries has awarded her two distinctions, one for aiding refugee families and another for Meals on Wheels’ homebound senior pets.

I immediately knew that I wanted to help her with this project. After all, education is the rising tide that raises all ships.” The look in Mrs. Boggio’s eyes is earnest, and she recalls a story of one of her ten sponsored girls who is especially important to her, Tripti Das. “It was very spiritual in a way because her picture was the one that captivated me out of everyone,” she said. Mrs. Boggio and other sponsors visited the school almost ten years ago, and their outlook on life would never be the same.“I remember Tripti took me to her living quarters, and if I had to guess the whole thing was about 10x15. The kitchen and the bedroom were one room, and the girls had wet the floor down so that it wouldn't be dusty when I walked in.

They stomped on it and made it very nice, and Tripti was so proud; she had the biggest smile on her face. The whole time I felt like breaking down but I kept it together. Tripti is getting ready to graduate this year, and it brings tears to my eyes to know that I was responsible for that.”

Mrs. Boggio serves on the advisory board for Pace Universal, a learning center committed to ending trafficking “So many of the children in our school and uplifting communities through the were so beautiful and so happy to be education of girls and women living in in school and have a great education.

They offer everything from nutrition counseling to hygiene counseling, and I feel that the people there were so happy for every little bit that they had. I was so struck by the passion of the people in such bad circumstances.” Without an education, the girls have few choices— begging, early marriage, child labor or the “other.” One of the reasons the founder, Deepa Willingham, started the school was when she learned of one of the girls who was sold into trafficking, and Deepa vowed to make a change in the community in Piyali Junction. Mrs. Boggio pauses thoughtfully. “You know, people who are genuinely giving and caring have a much better quality of health, better mental health…you have a better entire life.”

"I rediscovered my secret passion for silk. The universe has its own way of communicating with us."

The Silk CONNECTION

A

pocket full of stories filled with travels laced in silky threads, Shruti Chakraborty combines her passion for Robotics Engineering and fashion.

My love for silk dates to when I, as a child watched my grandmother drape her traditional silk saris. I was in awe of the elegance of the silk, the intricacy of patterns, the beautiful colors and the softness of the material.

Later, on a visit to interiors of Bengal, as I walked the streets of Bishnupur, Murshidadbad and Shantiniketan, I found myself in a paradise.

Watching how weavers transfer paper designs to gorgeous silks, over days of methodical and dedicated labor, helped me to understand what made this fabric so special. Here I learned about the different varieties of silk: Kanjeevaram, Bishnupuri, Banarasi Silk, Baluchari and Chanderi Silk among others.

My educational pursuits brought me to Lyon, France, the birthplace of Hermes.

On a lazy afternoon, during my first

few days in this picturesque country, when I decided to tour the streets, I chanced upon a traditional French “Atelier”, housing intricately designed and woven silk scarves. There as I traced the Silk Route, I rediscovered my secret passion for silk. The universe has its own way of communicating with us.

I want to present to the world both the elegance of a silk sari and fashionable practicality of a French scarf. A tasteful silk scarf effortlessly adds a touch of creativity to the otherwise monotonic business attire. It is then that I came up with the concept to combine the Indian and French connection with Silk and love for fashion to create a label that gives women confidence and brings to them exquisite silk scarves with a story to tell.

Tianna is an inspiration to young aspiring musicians.

T

rue to the spirit of music, Louis Vuitton and Indian veg ‘Thali,’ vocalist Tianna Hall is a Houston gem. LCAHouston International Correspondent, Shruti Chakraborty tunes into the pure magic of Tianna.

Although there is a cast of melancholy around this five-time Grammy recognized vocalist, Tianna Hall still knows how to fully enjoy her favorite things like Indian food, love for LV and Starbucks. Over a platter of paneer masala and samosas, 35-year-old Hall is Houston's busiest and most sought after jazz singer with six recordings under her belt.

Compassionate and humble, Tianna shares that her biggest pet peeve is the derogatory use of words like "retarded" or “gay." “Ugh! It punches me in the stomach about the same way people using the 'N-word' does,” she adds.

The passionate Tianna attended the University of Houston where she majored in vocal performance and worked professionally in musical theater and opera for many years. Today with several performance engagements, Tianna is an inspiration to young aspiring musicians. During her leisure time, Tianna plans to visit the Greek isles. She would love to return to Japan, Europe and South America to perform.

A powerhouse of talent, Tianna’s most memorable compliment was from a 7-year-old boy affected by autism.

Tianna cracks up at the memory of their encounter: "I handed him one of my 'new' business cards with my 2-month-old 'new' headshot on it and he said to me “Wow, you were really pretty when you first grew up!” Tianna believes that integrity is one of the most important qualities of a musician. "As a professional musician (and yes singers/ vocalists are musicians just as much as any instrumentalist) your integrity and professionalism will go just as far as your talent. Trust me on this one," she signs off.

here is no doubt truffles are an acquired taste. I first fell in love with the them during a trip to Milan, where it was used widely in local cuisine. Before then I simply didn’t understand all of the fuss and expense over such a strange ingredient. Being Indian, my taste generally runs more to floral, sweet or spicy tones, and this fungus was wholly different. But once that dish of bolognese with a touch of truffle was put it front of me, and the aromatics hit my nose, I was completely hooked. Now whenever I smell truffle, I start salivating like a Pavlovian dog.

here is an abundance of sushi restaurants in Houston, but if you want an incredible experience think KUU Restaurant. This definitely falls into the upper end of the spectrum. The Japanese name translates to ‘the art of eating,’ and from a visual perspective, this is certainly true. Each dish, whether cold or hot, simple nigiri or crafted drink, is served with elegance and attention to detail.

Luckily for diners, the artistry continues on in the taste.

KUU carries the full complement of traditional sashimi, which we thought were some of the most fresh we have ever had. You can taste the difference in quality compared to other establishments. Their nigiri selection includes maguro, kinmedai, shima aji, umimasu, madai, and kanpachi, which are meticulously created with just the right amount of rice and wasabi. We never thought of using shoyu (soy sauce), out of fear that we would tarnish the flavor.

Surprisingly, some of our favorite dishes were from the non-sushi parts of the menu. The tuna, lobster, and lotus chip dish is served cold with kimchi tuna, lobster claw meat, and Asian pear. On the hot side, seared sea scallops with 60-degree egg made in sous vide style, enoki mushrooms, and house cured bacon, stole the show.

The cocktail selection are no less creative and worth a try. The ‘Special K’ is made with vodka and berry compote and yuzu, and the ‘Nashijito’ is a mojitostyled drink with rum, Asian pear, and mint. Our favorite drink though, was the ‘Tame Yagi,’ a spicy-sweet concoction of Thai chili and agave. This was a perfect pairing with our food. There is no doubt that this establishment ranks amongst the finest for sushi aficionados and is a must-try for all foodies.

Even with the turmoil, such noted designers as Tom Ford, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, and Marc Jacobs are continuing to stick with big runway shows, along with such newcomers as east Texas-native Brandon Maxwell and popular South Asian-born designers Naeem Khan and Bibhu Mohapatra.

With the popularity of online shopping and the advent of social media, New York Fashion Week is in crisis. When I began covering the semi-annual showcase of the latest in American fashion 15 or so years ago, every major U.S. designer unveiled their collections that appeared in stores six months later.

But now, as soon as the collections have been shown, they appear on Instagram and Snapchat and are copied by low-price knockoff retailers, so by the time the real thing is available, much of the shopping public is bored.

Other designers, such as Jenny Packham, Victoria Beckham, Randi Rahm, and Yigal Azrouel, are going with intimate one-onone meetings with the fashion press in New York to showcase their collections in a more personal way, where it’s possible to see the clothes up-close and actually touch them.

Even with the turmoil, such noted designers as Tom Ford, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, and Marc Jacobs are continuing to stick with big runway shows, along with such newcomers as east Texas-native Brandon Maxwell and popular South Asian-born designers Naeem Khan and Bibhu Mohapatra.

For fall, Mohapatra unveiled a passionate collection of evening gowns and dressy day wear featuring bold colors — rich purples, reds, and pinks — and abstract orchid prints. He also unveiled a lower-priced 25-piece capsule collection of sporty separates, named Sashi by Bibhu after his mother.

Khan, who likes to design for women who like to get noticed, dedicated his collection to the “global woman.” It highlights a world view, with looks ranging from a Japanese kimono with a fuchsia sash to patterned skirts resembling a painting by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and rich brocade gowns in patterns of the Ottoman Empire.

He closed the show with a sport black velvet track suit with a sequined Statue of Liberty on the back.

While the collection was dazzling, nothing it in compared to the gown Khan recently designed for Hallie Vanderhider, who chaired the Houston Ballet Ball. As a tribute to Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Swan Lake,” Khan created a custom-made gown covered in 3,500 natural black coque feathers, weighing in at 7.25 pounds, for Vanderhider, who flew to New York with Tootsies creative director Fady Armanious for a fitting.

The gorgeous gown was the talk of the ball, as Vanderhider welcomed guests.

n Editor’s oasis: Houston’s renowned fashion guru, former CultureMap EditorIn-Chief, and long-time journalist, Clifford Pugh regularly covers fashion shows in New York, Milan, and Paris. LCAHouston International Society News Editor, Ruchi Mukherjee had the privilege to attend the New York Fashion show with the pro. Clifford sits down with Ruchi for a têteà-tête.

RM: You inspire so many journalists and fashion forward readers (including me!), but who is your inspiration?

CP: For fashion coverage, I continue to be inspired by Washington Post fashion editor Robin Givhan and The New York Times chief fashion critic Vanessa Friedman. When I first started covering fashion (for the Houston Chronicle) around 2004, all the major newspapers sent reporters Clifford Pugh and Ruchi Mukherjee to cover New York Fashion Week. Now there are only a handfull. They have been replaced by bloggers who post pretty pictures of the runway and themselves but they offer no critical evaluation of the collections. Robin and Vanessa continue to write wellreasoned critiques of all of the major collections in New York, Milan and Paris, with a view of what fashion means as part of the bigger picture of life. I am fortunate to continue to cover New York Fashion Week, now for PaperCity, and try to do the same thing. What people wear says so much about the trends in our society and the times we live in.

RM: You’ve traveled extensively both professionally and for leisure. What’s left on your bucket list of places to visit?

CP: I am looking forward to an extensive stay in Greece this summer as my spouse is of Greek ancestry and speaks the language fluently, so I have my own tour guide. I would

love to visit India with an expert on the area. So let me know when you are free to travel, Ruchi!

RM: Absolutely! What fashion statement does Houston best portray?

CP: Houston women are partial to colorful clothes and they love to dress up, so it's no wonder fashion designers are crazy about our city and come here often on personal appearances.

With a few exceptions, Houston men aren't nearly as adventuresome from a fashion standpoint.

RM: You’ve witnessed Houston’s lifestyle and cultural scene explode over the past 25 years. What has been your favorite change and what have you dreaded the most?

CP: Houston is a much more sophisticated and diverse city that it was when I first arrived around 25 years ago.

Compare the Super Bowl in 2004, when downtown Houston was still quite desolate and the big news was that the light rail had just opened, with the Super Bowl in 2017, when many of the activities took place around Discovery Green, surrounded by a number of major hotels, including the new Marriott Marquis. And the many different cultures, all getting along, make the city special. But I continue to have a pet peeve that many Houston leaders continue to feel compelled to defensively boast that we're a world class city instead of letting Houston stand on its merits.

RM: What do you see as the greatest potential for change in Houston in the next decade?

CP: I'm looking forward to seeing the next generation of young leaders put their stamp on the city and tackle its problems with innovative solutions. And I can't wait to see what they're wearing.

Incredible India: A Kaleidoscope

I

ndia with its rich heritage, diversity and natural beauty is a treasure for history scholars, adventurous tourists and art connoisseurs. It is a stunningly colorful kaleidoscope of humanity.

Here are a couple of examples that make it unique – the amazing art of Chikankari and the mouthwatering delicacies on Delhi streets.

They say, “in Lucknow you eat chicken, and you wear chikan.” Lucknow is famous for chikan, a handcrafted, flowered muslin textile. Introduced in the seventeenth century by Noor Jahan, wife of Emperor Jahangir, it is one of the styles most desired by global fashionistas. On a recent trip, I learned about chikankari, the technique of producing chikan, embroidery work on a light fabric like georgette or silk. Sequins, beads and mirrors may be added to embellish. The first step is to imprint the fabric using washable indigo and wooden pattern blocks.

The key step requiring real skill is stitching, of which there are many types. The process is labor intensive and provides employment to thousands of artisans in household businesses.

Much of the production involving traditional arts is carried out in this manner with skills handed down from generation to generation in close-knit families. Chikan design garments fetch anywhere from a few hundred to tens of thousands of rupees. The artisans work for a pittance, earning 150 to 200 rupees per day ($2-$3). They are the real ambassadors of traditional Indian arts and crafts.

Another fascinating thing about India is food. The French and Italians are famous for their culinary delights. But no place in the world has the variety that India has. Indians have a unique gastronomically emotional relationship with food that is visible in public places. It is on display in its full glory in the serpentine, packed alleys of Delhi where an incredible array of the most colorful, steaming hot delicacies casts a magical spell on the visitor. I was taken in by the sights, sounds and smells that pervade Chandni Chowk, capital of Delhi Street Food.

It is an amazing sight watching the mass of humanity engaged in cooking, serving and eating. In and around endless rows of stalls and shops, people are standing, sitting, laughing, talking, sharing and eating their favorites, one serving after another. It is crowded, and it is noisy. But it is a lot of fun. My travel companions and I, moving from stall to stall, picked out some of the most popular dishes for sampling: paranthas, mutter samosa, butter chicken and biryani, succulent kebabs, chhole bhature, nihari, kathi rolls, some momos, a little chaat and finally topped it all with a serving of piping hot jalebis. The key to successful survival after such an indulgent assault on my stomach was a measured sip after each sample - a sip of the antacid, Pepto Bismol. In India, Pepto Bismol is a worthy companion of the American Express card. “Don’t Leave Home Without It,” as the commercial tells you.

Masud, and Vanitha Pothuri, this year’s gala welcomed more than 650 diverse community members – the largest event in Daya’s 22-year history.

This year, Daya supported 394 clients of domestic and sexual violence with confidential, culturally sensitive, services including mental health care, case management, legal assistance, employment coaching, housing and childcare. Daya’s holistic approach ensures South Asian survivors overcome barriers such as language, immigration status and cultural taboos. The gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in India in 2012, popularly known as the Nirbhaya case, became a defining case in India's history. Now again the recent inhuman gang rape of an eight-yearold child in Jammu and Kashmir and the other in Unnao, raises one serious question about our South Asian mindset.

Organizations like these should help bring awareness and start conversations where we stop blaming the victim and create change.

In conversation Chinoy explained her passion to make a difference goes back to when she was only ten years old. The audience was given an introduction to Ms. Obaid-Chinoy’s life’s work in giving voice to vulnerable populations around the world. Obaid-Chinoy spoke passionately about standing up

against injustices, the power of film, and the need for men to engage in the movement to end violence against women. She spoke pointedly about her own late father and how his influence and support made her the activist she is today. A global champion of women, Daya could think of no one better to share their insight and inspiration during this time when women's rights are at the forefront of public consciousness.

She ended her inspirational speech of courage and social justice by urging the audience to help Daya. "I am an activist journalist,” she says. "When I have spent two years embedded with someone's life, I want people to be as angry as I am, I want people to do something about that person and bring some sort of change."

Daya Board President Sheela Rao welcomed Houston Mayor Pro Tem, Ms. Ellen Cohen, to the stage to read an official proclamation from the Mayor’s Office, naming April 7, 2018 “Daya Day” in the City of Houston.

Only by engaging in an open and frank dialogue can we hope to dispel the stigma surrounding these horrific atrocities. The core issue is one of predator and prey and the patriarchal hierarchy that enables such behavior, even in modern society. Men are looked to as leaders in family structures and their ethics and resulting actions are

reinforced from within by male and female family members alike. In India, as in other cultures, there is a strong encouragement by mothers to protect their male children and to blindly justify improper behavior as acceptable. It is time to speak up when your husband, boyfriend or mother-in-law disrespects you, no abuse is big or small. Emotional trauma is as significant as physical.

We should no more be silenced in the name of religious customs and values.

Elijah Rising: A Silver Lining for Survivors of Sex Trafficking

ccording to Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, almost 20 percent of all trafficking victims in the U.S. travel through Texas, usually on the Interstate 10 corridor. "In 2008, 38 percent of all calls to the National Trafficking Resource Center originated from Texas."

Houston is well known as a set up for ‘training brothels.’ While Houstonians are deeply concerned about the safety of children, one organization may offer a silver lining.

Elijah Rising is a Houston-based non-profit organization committed to ending the sex trafficking trade and sexual exploitation of women through recovery and restoration.

t was an evening of international glamour at the Developments in Literacy (DIL) 20th Anniversary Fundraising Gala on April 21 at The Post Oak Hotel Uptown Houston.

Prominent community leaders from diverse backgrounds joined hands to raise funds and awareness for a global cause.

DIL is an non-profit organization with a mission to "educate and empower underprivileged students, especially girls, by operating student-centered model schools; and provides high-quality professional development to teachers and principals across Pakistan." Chapter President Maha Rasheed Khan, along with a team of dedicated board members and brilliant former President Dr. Neelofur Ahmad, hosted over 400 guests who helped raise significant funds for DIL.

ouston’s elite animal advocates championed the cause at a pet fashion show on February 10, 2018 for Best Friends Brunch for Chairs and Honoree 1 AniMeals, a program by Interfaith Kim Padgett and Casey Curry 1 Ministries (IM) for Greater Houston that feeds the pets of Meals on Wheels’ Martin B. Cominsky, president and CEO of IM, reminded attendees that homebound seniors.

NOWAutism founded in April of 2013 witnessed a star studded successful fourth annual gala February, 2018 raising $375,000 to foster their mission to promote autism awareness and provide education and resources.

The Emcee for the evening Deborah Duncan looked stunning in a red gown and Van Cleef jewelry along with CoChairs: Donae Chramosta & Amy Pierce and Honorary Chair Laure Heriard Dubreuil.

While the 260 guests eagerly awaited to witness the KnowAutism ambassadors walk the ramp, Vocalist Kelly Levesque mesmerized everyone with her debut song “I Won’t Let You Down,” which she wrote exclusively for the KNOWAutism Foundation. Designer David Peck dressed Kelly in a custom gown and surprised the crowd with a duet of “The Prayer”.

Since its inception many philanthropic Houstonians have come forward to support the cause. One such couple Dr. Sippi and Ajay Khurana received the Humanitarian Award from KnowAutism.

pring is here and that means so is the much awaited Tiger Ball. More than 600 guests in black tie and national dress were greeted by several wishing trees, a tradition throughout Asia, along Southmore, strung with hot pink and red ribbons on March 3, 2018.

Celebrating the Diversity of Asia, the gala evening honored Sylvia and Gordon Quan, longtime Asia Society advocates. The event also recognized Co-Chairs Kathy and Glen Gondo, Helene and Stephen Le, and Sultana and Moez Mangalji, as well as Honorary Chairs The Honorable Theresa Chang and Dr. Peter Chang. The gala raised $1.2 million, well past the fundraising goal.

With a lavish Taj Mahal theme tent with Moorish gates, lanterns and rugs, guests enjoyed cocktails and Chinese performances by Dance of Asian America, who led a procession into the Grand Hall for dinner. A sumptuous Pan-Asian dinner was served throughout the award-winning work of art, Asia Society Texas Center building (designed by famed architect Yoshio Taniguchi). After dinner, guests returned to the Chevron Gala Pavilion for a decadent array of desserts and an impromptu hula lesson.

This celebrity designer was recently listed as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. Christian Siriano completed his studies in London under legends like Vivienne Westwood and Alexandra McQueen. Based in New York City, Siriano is a frequent visitor and a friend of H-Town.

pring is a very exciting time in Houston. Not only does the city eagerly await to spot the Houston Chronicle's Best Dressed gals, but this year we got to experience that at Tilman Fertitta's shiny new Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston. With co-chairs Dr. Sippi Khurana and Laura Davenport the luncheon raised a record-shattering $638,000 for the beneficiary March of Dimes' 80th anniversary Houston Chronicle's 36th Annual Best Dressed soiree.

This year's Honorees were: Lindley Arnoldy, Karina Barbieri, Brigitte Kalai, Shawntell McWilliams, Alicia Smith, Claire Cormier Thielke and Hallie Vanderhider joined by Hall of Famers Stephanie Cockrell, Paige Fertitta and Millette Sherman, all of whom made the Best Dressed list for the third time.

The fashionable and philanthropic bunch were introduced by Houston Chronicle chairman Jack Sweeney and fashion editor Joy Sewing. After a stylish walk down the runway by these deserving ladies, the guests enjoyed an Akris runway show presented by Neiman Marcus.

The man behind the Swiss fashion house Akris, designer and creative director Albert Kriemler, was spotted at the luncheon. What a treat for Houstonians as the designer visited Houston after 18 long years.

ne of Houston’s many hidden gems is tucked away amidst 22 acres of gorgeous fountains and finely kept greenery, something the eye must see for itself.

Our very own LCAHouston Editor/Publisher, Ruchi Mukherjee was present at the groundbreaking of the temple in 2004. Ms Mukherjee did a special segment ‘Keeping the Traditions Alive’ on the temple for FOX 26 a few years back. The story had received over 100,000 viewers.

Here is a sneak speak to this Mandhir, or temple, which is a piece of architectural beauty and impressive engineering. It is a stylized structure with techniques and symbolism of Indian deities and religious scriptures that date back centuries, closely replicating some of India’s finest temples.

The moment you step foot on the Mandhir grounds, you feel immediate peace and tranquility. A place for thoughts, prayer, and meditation is one of the most important reasons places like this exist. There is a daily aarti, or prayer, that happens at the temple which is accompanied by songs and prayers to welcome the positive teachings of these deities into each and everyone’s lives. Thousands of people visit the temple for services, major holiday festivals like Holi, Diwali and Navratri, as well as the fresh made foods and desserts at the temple’s shop. A visual and spiritual beauty, we are lucky to have something this gorgeous with so much meaning, right outside our door steps.

Son of television star and KPRC News Anchor Dominique Sachse, young Styles Credeur’s sights are set on sports. His love is basketball, but this middle-schooler is more interested in the business of the game rather than being a star, specifically as a sports agent. Rattling off stats comes easily no matter the team or game. Aside from P.E., his favorite class is Spanish.

Arissa Jokhio Born in Upstate, New York, Arissa moved to Houston when she was 8. Now 14, she is a go getter with a heart of gold. While she enjoys cooking and meeting new people, Arissa runs competitively as a sprinter and also plays the violin. She is passionate about everything she is involved with. She is passionate about helping others as demonstrated through her work with the KNOWAutism Foundation. She surpassed her goal of raising $2800 by collecting $6000 in donations to help a wonderful cause. During Hurricane Harvey she also helped two families get back on their feet after they lost their homes and most of their belongings. She donated her clothes to their kids and gathered up unused items from her house to give to them. Arissa plans to work on many other projects that benefit others and lead to a better world for everyone.

Julia Nguyen Twelve-year-old Julia is everything that a parent could dream of. She started playing the piano at the age of five and went on to join the Vivaldi Music Academy, which gave her the opportunity to perform at The Carnegie Hall in New York, the Santa Maria della Pieta in Venice, and The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Julia was also selected to play in Vivaldi’s Young Musicians Showcase in 2017.

This little bundle of talent also loves singing, acting, swimming, gymnastics and hanging out with friends. She wants to be an attorney when she grows up. Julia lives in Houston with her philanthropic parents Tammy Tran and Wayne Nguyen and nine-year-old brother, Reagan.

Emma Rivera Confident, fashionable five-year-old Emma knows what she wants. She loves going to school, having play dates, and practicing gymnastics. When she isn’t doing her favorite activities, she enjoys getting manicures with her mommy or riding her bike with her daddy and brother. Yolanda Adams

A

fter twelve albums, five Grammys and performances for several U.S. Presidents, she still wows audiences all over the world.

Yolanda Adams is renowned for pioneering a blend of modern gospel music infused with soul and jazz.

She has earned her multiple awards from organizations such as the Stellar's, Grammys, BMI, Soul Train Awards, NAACP Image, BET and more. In 2001, she was the first artist to receive an American Music Award for "Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist." In 2017 she was inducted into GMA's Hall of Fame for her outstanding achievements in the Christian music industry. The Yolanda Adams Morning Show, has been heard in more than 60 markets nationally.

She served as a spokesperson for the FILA Corporation's Operation Rebound program, which addressed the concerns of inner city school children.

In 2016, President Barack Obama presented Yolanda with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award.

While she is grateful for her success, Yolanda's greatest achievement comes from being a mother and great example to her daughter.

Mona Khan

M

ona Khan is the wife and business partner to her successful husband and a proud mother of a 14-year-old son.

She was raised in the San Francisco area where she studied business and accounting.

Following her education, she worked in the acquisitions departments of Cisco Systems and Advent Software.

Mona and her husband opened their first business venture of furniture stores and then entered the niche market of corporate housing. In 2008 they founded Stafford Housing, which provides temporary housing solutions.

Mona is involved in the local community as a philanthropist who dedicates time to multiple causes.

She has served on the board of Developments in Literacy for two years and continues to work hard to promote female education and empowerment. When Mona is not working and helping others, she enjoys traveling with her family and spending time with her loved ones.

Dr. Alice Mao

D

r. Alice Mao is not only the mother of a 19-year-old autistic son, Evan, she has devoted her academic career to educating others about the life changing stresses on parents and siblings caring for autistic children.

She is a professor of psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine and is the medical director of the Autism Clinic of the Texas Children's Outpatient Clinic.

She was the chair of the KNOWAutism 2017 Gala, is an Ambassador for KNOWAutism for the 2018 Gala and served on the development committee of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She also supports APAHA, The Women's Home and Operation Smiles.

Alice was a runway model for Saks Fifth Avenue, Sakowitz and Neiman Marcus while a psychology and biology major at Rice University. She developed a passion for fashion that has persisted until today.

Dr. Gia Merlo

D

r. Gia Merlo is a physician who is the associate dean of health professions and professor of practice at Rice University.

She is also an assistant professor at the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, and a fellow at Johns Hopkins University where she is completing her Master in Education. She also is a Master Teacher Fellow at the Baylor College of Medicine.

Gia grew up in Baton Rouge and recently moved to Houston with her husband, Antonio Merlo, from Philadelphia, where she spent most of her career. She has served on various boards including the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Alumni Board, the Board of Directors for Laurel House, a non-profit organization, and is on the Advisory Board of Child Advocates in Houston. In 2006, she obtained her Executive Masters of Business Administration degree.

Gia and her husband are the proud parents of two daughters, Monisha and Martina.

Britta Merwin

B

ritta Merwin is a self-proclaimed weather nut, she is a native Texan born in San Antonio who joined the KPRC 2 Severe Weather Team in 2014.

She is an Emmy-nominated meteorologist and a certified broadcast meteorologist through the American Meteorological Society. Britta studied meteorology at Stony Brook University in New York, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Sciences-Meteorology with cum laude honors.

Britta's professional resume includes the NBC Weather Plus Network, where she forecasted and presented the weather for NBC Weather Plus, CNBC, CNBC World, Nightly News, MSNBC and the NBC affiliate in San Diego, KNSD. Britta visits more than 30 schools a year inspiring the next generation to reach for the stars and follow their passions. Britta is a mother to two young sons.

Although she is deeply dedicated to her craft, Britta's favorite job is taking care of her boys!

Maria Morales

M

aria Vidal Morales has a passion for serving the community. She owns Healthy Elegance and is a devoted wife to her high school sweetheart and loving mom of two beautiful daughters.

Born and raised in Mexico City, Maria moved to Houston 27 years ago. She loves supporting her Hispanic heritage and is a proud Houstonian.

She earned her Bachelors in Business/Marketing and Sociology from Houston Baptist University. She then continued her education at the University of Houston, where she earned her Masters in Education.

In her free time, she serves on various boards, supports charitable organizations including Shriners, Scarlett Fund, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Be The Match and Wig Out. Maria loves to travel to enhance cultural diversity and enjoys spending time with her beautiful family and friends.

T

ia Neyman's appreciation for beauty began as a child, when she modeled for Sakowitz.

Ever since, she has sought to recognize, respect and share her appreciation for beauty throughout the world. She went on to became a professional model and to design and manufacture children’s clothing.

She recently started her own line of jewelry.

Tia began her study of ballet in her fifties and continues to dance today. She shares her passion for life with her family and friends, and they have inspired her to always remember that life is beautiful and should be treasured.

Tia is the mother of two grown daughters, Mia and Scarlet, and is a grandmother of four boys.

Dallas Rowden

D

allas Rowden considers herself a "jack of all trades.� No matter the task, be it attending New York Fashion Week or burning brush on the Rowden's Hill Country ranch, she jumps in with gusto.

She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Journalism degree and has worked for Sheltering Arms and MD Anderson.

She has supported Operation Smile (Moscow, Russia), BEAR, Camp for All, Sheltering Arms, Pets Alive and KNOWAutism. This fall she will be co-chairing a luncheon for Elijah Rising, an organization dedicated to helping women overcome the physical and mental abuses of sex trafficking.

She has three children and enjoys cooking, shopping at vintage stores, collecting art and attending UT sporting events with her husband Keith Dallas.

Audrey Toll

A

udrey Toll originally hails from Philadelphia where she began her career as a program supervisor for a local television quiz show for ABC Philadelphia along-side Dick Clark. She later moved to Europe where she met her husband Peter Sachse. The couple returned to the US where their daughter, Houston’s very own Dominique Sachse, was born.

Audrey spends her time as a proponent for a holistic, healthy lifestyle with a preventative approach and as a proud grandmother.

ashi Vats wears many hats at FOX 26. She is not only a reporter covering a variety of stories but also fills in to anchor for news and traffic. Prior to joining FOX 26 in 2013, she worked at television stations in Corpus Christi and College Station.

Rashi interned at the CBS London Bureau and was awarded a fellowship in New York City with the CBS Evening News. She is a graduate of Texas Christian University with degrees in broadcasting and business.

She has emceed numerous events including Eye Care for Kids, Indian Film Festival, Indo American Chamber of Commerce and local community 5k/10k runs. Rashi supports the Star of Hope, The Diaper Foundation and Childs Rights and You charities.

She recently became a mother and loves spending time with her one-year-old son and husband, Daniel Gotera.

aurette Veres is the proud mother of twin boys Andrew and Patrick. A die-hard Houston sports fan, she loves attending Astros games with her family. Her parents founded the Make-A-Wish chapter in the Rio Grande Valley. Laurette followed in their footsteps as a second-generation Make-A-Wish board member and served as chairman of the board. She supports Citizens for Animal Protection, The Mission of Yahweh and the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.

She started her first company in her twenties and has been a member of Entrepreneur Organization for more than fifteen years. Currently, she is the owner of the Bridal Extravaganza Show and editor-in-chief of Texas Weddings Magazine and H Texas Magazine.
