DIRECTOR’S NOTE

elcome to the opening of the Gaston Christian Players’ 2019-2020 season! We’re thrilled to be spending the entire year in the M.O. Owens Worship and Fine Arts Center which will allow us to produce our annual fall and spring plays, bring back our student-directed one-act play festival, and add a new opportunity for middle school students: a one-act competition piece for the North Carolina Theatre Conference! We’re looking forward to each of these events and hope you’ll continue to support the GCPs throughout the year as you are doing tonight with your attendance at The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, our season opener.

Choosing LWW was at first a no-brainer, but then it became a daunting choice! The Christian allegory within the story is certainly familiar to many of you in our audience, but an allegory on the page is a bit easier to imagine than it is to realize on the stage! Our teachers, students, and volunteers have worked tirelessly over the past two months brainstorming, collaborating, and problem solving ways to overcome staging obstacles and then designing, constructing, and implementing those solutions. To say that putting on a play is “just fun” is to misunderstand what goes on in this building. Students use critical thinking skills from many academic subjects to create what you see on stage tonight. What looks “simple” to an audience is a testament of our students’ abilities to work hard enough to make what’s really complicated look easy. Don’t believe me? Why not join our volunteer team to find out just how brilliant (and hard working) theatre students are! We’d love to have you! In the meantime, we hope you’ll keep being part of our audience, the greatest way to support our students. They love having you here and as always, hope you’ll enjoy their show!
