Our goal is to raise enough money to purchase a Segway personal transporter for one of our wounded hero’s.

Tax Deadline is Approaching

As the end of the year is quickly approaching and if you haven’t paid your personal & real estate taxes yet, The Macon County Collector will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. They will be open until 5:00 on the 26th, 29th and 30th, also open to noon on Saturday the 27th and until 4:00 on the 31st.

If you choose to mail your payment, make sure it IS POSTMARKED BY DECEMBER 31ST. Please, check with your local post office for their postmark deadline. All mail with a later postmark will be returned for an additional penalty amount. They do have a drop box available in the Sherriff ’s office. There is also the on-line payment option with a usage fee at maconcountymo. com but this will be shut down at midnight the 31st.

The new Macon Youth Wrestling Club has 43 members between the ages of 5 and 14. On Sunday, December 7th, 19 of them participated in their first wrestling tournament at the Marceline High School along with approximately 125 other wrestlers from Brookfield, Centralia, Moberly, Mexico, Kirksville, and Jefferson City. One Macon wrestler took first place while the 18 other wrestlers all placed second, third or fourth in their age and weight group. The 19 wrestlers who participated in the tournament are: Jacob Bettes, Kolton Carmichael, Cole Crooks, Jeslyn Ford, Xzaver Ford, Carson Gingrich, Denver Gingrich, Cole Harrell, Levi Harrell, Mark Harrell, Gabriel Hernandez-Rector, Connor Hunter, Bodie Legan, Niccolo Lenzini, Garon Morris, Ethan Prewitt, Corbin Reed, Jace Smith and Garrett Wilson. Macon coaches at the tournament were Coach Jesse Ford, Coach Gingrich, Coach Philip Prewitt, and Coach George Quinn.

Operation Christmas Cookie 2014 Every year Macon Health Care Center puts together Operation Christmas Cookie.

This project sends Christmas cookies to all the service men and women who are stationed overseas.

Every year our staff, community, volunteers and schools help make this a success. Without the help of our community this project would not be as successful as it has been the past years.

This year we shipped out over 5000 cookies to our soldiers! We had huge help from the Macon High School culinary arts class, which is taught by Mrs. Maria smith. Her class made 4,078 cookies!

We also need to thank Mrs. Rochelle shoemaker and her business class for helping with the labels to go on the boxes and also to Beverly at the VoTech for helping! All of you have made a huge difference in our soldiers Christmas. They will get to enjoy homemade Christmas cookies during the holidays.

Many of these cookies will bring back memories of past holidays spent back in the states with their families. Again, we thank you!

I can’t forget two special people here at Macon health care center who got all 5000 cookies to the post office and shipped off to our soldiers...... big thanks to Beth watts and Penny Danner for spending hours at the post office making sure the cookies are in route to their Christmas destination!

By: Macon County R-IV, Sr., Kennedy Craig As Christmas quickly approaches, the Macon County R-IV faculty is getting prepared for some Christmas Festivities. The high school drama class is trying something new that will be fun and get everyone in the Christmas spirit. The drama class will be writing and producing a skit for the teachers to perform for the students K-12. As part of their final project, they will be making and setting up their set, selecting music, writing and producing the skits and running the technical part of the show and performing.

The drama students have also created some fun Christmas dress up days for the school, which are: Wednesday, the 17th “Santa’s Helper” the students can dress up as an elf, or reindeer; Thursday, the 18th, students can dress like a character from their favorite Christmas movie; Friday, the 19th Santa Day, the students can wear Santa hats and shirts. Starting the next week, Monday, the 22nd is Ugly Christmas Sweater Day where students, faculty and staff wear an ugly Christmas sweater to school and finally, Tuesday, the 23rd, it is the Macon County R-IV Christmas Morning; students come to school in their PJ’s.

As part of the performance, some of the teachers will sing, perform a fun dance, Mrs. B, and Ms. Kelley will find their inner comedian, and tell some cheesy Christmas jokes; to end the production, the teachers will join and sing “Santa Clause is Coming to Town” with an appearance by Santa (if he isn’t too busy getting ready for his big trip). Drama teacher, Mrs. Annika Winkie stated, “I think the kids are excited to produce a quality performance and spread Christmas cheer.”

If you would like to attend the performance, feel free to join us in the MCR-IV gym on December 23rd at 8:30 am.

Atlanta News Twenty nine people from Atlanta Christian Church went Christmas caroling on the evening of December 10. Four Joy baskets were delivered.

Thirty seven people gathered at the church afterwards for soup, sandwiches, and cookies with Shara Thrasher as hostess. Eleven women then met for their monthly Women’s Council meeting.

Carolyn Read read Matthew 1:21 and opened the meeting with prayer. Three thank you notes were read from college students for money and snack packs we sent them. A Minute Man letter was received from Central Christian College of the Bible and $20 was sent to them.

The Christmas program will be held on December 14. Poinsettia Presentation program will be on December 21. Christmas Eve candlelight program will be held at 6PM. It was

Justin Hammons, Julie Kay Howe and Marsha Hammons attended visitation for a friend, Annie Ratliff at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia Wednesday night.

Dolores Harpster, Linda Phillips, Carolyn Read and Marsha Hammons visited Sharon Lair at Life Care Center at Brookfield Thursday morning. The four ladies had lunch out before returning home.

La Plata United Methodist Church (Gex at Colbern Streets)

The Heartland Community Church youth group recently celebrated the season with parties at Scotties Fun Spot in Quincy, Illinois. The teenagers enjoyed roller skating, video games, and lots of snacks.

The youth group had to party early in the month, because they will be busy the next few weeks.

In addition to all the local events like Christmas caroling and cookie baking, several members of the youth group are rehearsing for their annual band concert. Some of them are also packing their bags to travel to South Dakota for a mission trip in the middle of the month. They will connect with some local churches in that area and help with a Christmas outreach to children on the Native American reservations.

We are proud of these young people who have a heart to give. And we are grateful for the parents, teachers, and leaders who are making the opportunity available.

Clara Emojean Johnston

Jean Johnston, age 91, of Clarence, MO, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at Clarence Care Center in Clarence, MO. She was born on August 28, 1923, in Hedge City, MO, the daughter of John Henry and Emma Arment Pulse.

On November 16, 1946, she was united in marriage to Ledru “Butch” Johnston at Macon, MO. Jean is survived by four children, Phyllis Fuller and husband David of Macon, MO, John Johnston and wife Kathi of Hastings, NE, Cleola Fajardo of Clarence, MO and Mitzie Basler and husband Michael of Clarence, MO; thirteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Michael Johnston; one brother and six sisters.

Jean was a Christian by faith. She was employed by Toastmasters for eighteen years. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, cooking and fishing. Her family was her greatest joy and she loved the time she spent with them, especially her grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, December 12, 2014, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Clarence, MO, with burial to follow at the Brethren-Mennonite Cemetery in Cherry Box, MO. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home in Clarence from 9:30 to 10:30 am on Friday. Memorials may be made to the Brethren-Mennonite Cemetery.

Obituary Donald Steve Jones

Don Jones, age 72, of Columbia, MO, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at his residence in Columbia, surrounded by his family.

He was born on May 28, 1942, in Hannibal, MO, the son of Paul E. and Leta Ione Young Jones. On January 11, 1964, he was united in marriage to Barbara Carroll at the First Baptist Church in Shelbina, MO. She survives.

Don is also survived by two children, Donna Bouchey and husband Mike and Brad Jones and wife Kim, both of Columbia, MO; seven grandchildren, Kayla, Amanda, DeQuann, Brooklyn, Korey, Dakota and Joseph; one brother, Jack Jones and wife Elsie of Monroe City, MO and two sisters, Sue Hopkins and husband Denny of Ankeny, IA and Pauletta Meyer of San Dimas, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother Ronald and his sister Elaine Jones.

Don was a 1960 graduate of Monroe City High School.

He enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was an avid Mizzou Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals fan. Don loved spending time with his family and friends, but especially his grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, MO, with burial to follow in Shelbina Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home in Shelbina on Wednesday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Obituary June H. Allen

Mrs. June H. Allen, age 90, of Macon, MO passed away December 2, 2014 in Loch Haven Nursing Home, Macon, MO. She was born October 2, 1924 at Green Castle, MO. to Orvel and Rosazetta (Downen) Moots.

She was the youngest child and the last survivor. On December 24, 1963 she was married to Archie “Jay” Allen of Weaubleau, MO in Kirksville, MO in the First Baptist Parsonage by Rev. Ralph Smith.

June graduated from Green Castle High School in 1943 and received a BSE degree and a Master’s Degree from Missouri State Teachers College in Special Education.

She taught school for 35 years, ten years in Missouri Schools and 25 years in Illinois Schools. In 1980, she retired from teaching and she and her husband moved to Bevier, MO in 1982. The last two years she spent in Macon, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, eight brothers, and her husband, Archie Jay Allen on November 30, 2010.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 5, 2014 at Fairview-Butcher Cemetery, Weaubleau, MO with Rev. Kent Parson officiating under the direction of Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home, Wheatland, MO. Visitation will be noon-2:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home prior to the graveside service.

Obituary Melvina Annette Blew

Melvina Annette Blew, 98, of Macon passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Loch Haven in Macon, Missouri.

Melvina was born August 26, 1916 to Leo Ernest and Marie Louise (Claussen) Heath in Clarion, Iowa. During her career, she was a school teacher in the Kaseyville, Missouri area and an Assistant Librarian in Salisbury.

She was a kind and sweet woman who was interested in her family and friends and their activities. She loved to read, travel, play games and was crazy about cats.

Melvina taughtSunday school and was a church pianist for different churches in her earlier days.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil Blew.

Melvina is survived by her sister; Lauretta Yutz of Macon, MO; nieces: Ann Y. Adams of Louisville, KY, JoAnne McClellan and husband William of Callao, MO, Janice Dubbert and husband Joe of Callao, Judy Beckemeyer and husband Eric of Grayslake, IL, and Jane Sappington and husband Jim of Macon; nephew, John Yutz and wife Donna of Callao; several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 12, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until service time at 10:00 a.m. at the Million Taylor Funeral Homes of Moberly with Pastor Jim Bolin officiating. Burial will follow at Hebron Cemetery in Kaseyville.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Hebron Cemetery Fund.

Alberta Collins Alberta Collins, age 91 of La Plata, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Macon Health Care Center in Macon, Missouri.

Born October 10, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Albert and Mary (Bruce) Krause. On November 21, 1953 in Croydon, Pennsylvania, she married Leland Collins who survives.

Also surviving is one son, Leland D Collins and wife Joann of Laurel Springs, New Jersey; one daughter, Judithann Romanski and husband Joseph of Newtown, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Joseph Jr., Jared, Janeen, Gianna, and Bianca; and three great grandchildren, Paul, Jared Jr., and Carsen.

Her parents, two sisters, Mary O’Connell and Anna Wolf, and one brother, William O’Connell preceded her in death.

Alberta was a member of the La Plata Christian Church and the La Plata American Legion Auxiliary.

A memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the La Plata Christian Church. Officiating will be Pastor John Davison.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 14, 2014 with the family receiving friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the church.

Interment will be 11:00 a.m. Monday December 15, 2014 at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, Missouri under the direction of Travis Funeral Chapel.

Obituary Helen Leverne Prange

Helen Prange, age 104, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2014, at Shelbina Villa in Shelbina, MO. She was born on April 21, 1910, in Leonard, MO, the daughter of John Marcus and Anna Patton Gaines.

On November 21, 1931, she was united in marriage to Emerson Prange at Plevna, MO. He preceded her in death on August 20, 1990.

Helen is survived by three sons, E.L. Prange and wife Marilyn of Alma, MO, Don Prange and wife Mary Ann of Shelbyville, MO and John Prange and wife Lori of Mertztown, PA; nine grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and one sister Marion Stichler.

Helen was a 1937 graduate of Bethel High School and a member of the Shelbyville Christian Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, needlework, crossword puzzles, reading and playing cards.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, MO, with burial to follow in Shelby Memorial Cemetery in Shelbyville, MO. Mayme Ruth Harlan, 83, of Moberly, died Friday morning, December 12, 2014. She was born August 9, 1931, in Chariton County, MO, to Earl and Leona (Winkler) Rook.

She married Melvin K. Harlan on December 23, 1950 in Salisbury and he preceded her in death on December 26, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, George Rook and Charles Rook in infancy, and a sister Sue Eagan.

Brett Thomas Jackson, 43, of La Plata, Missouri, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2014, at his home.

Brett was born on November 28, 1971, in Kirksville, Missouri, to Bob and Andrea Jackson. Brett married the love of his life, Audra Davison, on December 27, 1992.

Brett is survived by his wife, Audra Jackson; two children of the home, Trey and Bethany Jackson; his parents Bob and Andrea Jackson; two brothers, Reed and wife Carna Jackson of Chesapeake, VA, Lance and wife Paula Jackson of Miami, FL; brother-in-law Charlie Davison and wife Trish of La Plata, MO, Sister-in-law Sarah Halstead and husband Ryan of La Plata, MO, and brother-in-law Nate Davison of Columbia, MO; 8 nieces and nephews, Teagan and Ronan Jackson, Luke and Dylan Jackson, Ty and Jessica Davison, and Logan and Piper Halstead; special friend of the family, Laura Blake.

Brett was a graduate of La Plata High School and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from Northeast Missouri State University. Brett worked for the State of Missouri as a Meat Inspector for 11 years before going to work for Cargill in 2011. Brett enjoyed working on the family farm and raised sheep, horses, goats, and cattle. At the time of his death, Brett was a member of Cornerstone Church in Kirksville.

When not at work, Brett could be found hunting, fishing, boating, riding motorcycles, working on old trucks, and doing anything that involved being outdoors or in his shop. Most of all, Brett loved spending time with his family at home. Brett was known for his kindness and everyone that knew him loved and respected him.

Visitation was held from 6:00 – 8:00pm, Sunday, December 7, 2014 at the La Plata Community Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services were held at 11:00am Monday, December 8, 2014 at the La Plata Community Presbyterian Church with burial following at Gibbs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Brett Jackson Memorial for the purpose of assisting families who have patients in the hospital.

Pallbearers were Trey Jackson, Bob Jackson, Reed Jackson, Lance Jackson, Charlie Davison, Nate Davison and Ryan Halstead.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bryan Bane, Stacy Morgenstern, & Brett’s cousins.

You Will Be Missed Obituary Charlie Glover

Charlie Glover of Shelbina passed away on December 11, 2014 after a short illness. He was born November 6, 1926 to SP Glover, Sr and Edna Carenan. He was raised in Shelbyville and other than time spent in the military, lived his entire life there. Charlie had three sisters and two brothers, Fanny Eber, Margaret Otto, Virginia Ernie, SP (Bud) Glover and Robert Glover, all of whom predeceased him.

Charlie was a member of the US Army during World War II and served in Panama and the Philippines.

He married Nyda Jo Perry on November 1, 1947 and she survives. Of that union, six children were born: Charles Joe Glover and wife Patty, James Lynn Glover and wife Barbara, Alan Jack Glover and wife Sherry, John Dale Glover, who passed away in 1995, Jeffrey Perry Glover and wife Paula, and Teresa Joyce Glover and husband Tim Underwood. Charlie was also the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. One grandson, charlie glover preceded him in death in 1989.

He was a carpenter by trade and along with his dad and later his brother, built many of the homes in Shelbyville and Shelbina. He was an avid gardener and loved sharing produce out of his garden as much as he enjoyed eating it himself. He enjoyed hunting and especially fishing and the family has many photos of the fish he and his sons and friends caught.

Charlie and Nyda Jo were married for 67 years and spent most of those years living in the house he and his sons built west of Shelbyville. They have resided for the past few years at the Villa in Shelbina where Nyda Jo still resides.

Charlie was a well known figure in Shelbyville and Shelbina and will be greatly missed by his family and friends in Shelby County.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 15, 2014, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, MO, with Rev. Darian Catron and Rev. Albin Covington officiating. Burial will follow at Shelby Memorial Cemetery in Shelbyville, MO. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home in Shelbina, on Sunday, December 14, 2014, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

The Macon Tiger basketball team opened its run in the 59th Centralia Tournament Tuesday night against the Southern Boone Eagles, and were defeated by their opponents, 55-39.

Jon Murray led the Tigers with 19 points. Christian Thrasher followed with six points. Caleb Perry and Cole Bisch each scored four points. Aaron Brown cashed in three points.

Nolan Bright tallied two points, and Skyler Thomas added one point.

The Tigers faced off against the North Callaway Thunderbirds Thursday night in the consolation semifinals, and picked up their first win of the season, winning 48-32.

Jon Murray had a big night for Macon, leading his team with 24 points, grabbing an impressive 19 rebounds and blocking five shots. Aaron Brown followed with eight points. Christian Thrasher scored seven points. Cole Bisch tallied five points. Ethan Foster and Caleb Perry each added two points.

With the win, the Tigers moved into Saturday’s Consolation Final against Hallsville.

The Macon Tigerette basketball team opened its run in the 59th Centralia Tournament Monday night against the Salisbury Lady Panthers. It was the Tigerettes’ second game against Salisbury in a week, with the same result, as Macon claimed a 47-36 victory.

Katie Clapp led the Tigerettes with 15 points. Shelbe Butner followed with 14 points. Chalee Britt scored nine points. Cassie Martin tallied three points.

Tyra Douglas, Jocie Hogsett and Makenzie Jemes each added two points.

On Wednesday night, the Tigerettes faced off against the Southern Boone Lady Eagles in the semifinals of the Centralia Tournament, and came away with a 50-42 victory.

“We played our best game so far,” said coach Dan Halley. “We had a good group defensive effort.”

Makenzie Jemes led the Tigerettes with 21 points. Katie Clapp followed with 14 points. Chalee Britt scored six points. Megan Rowland cashed in five points. Shelbe Butner and Paige Hawkins each added two points.

The Tigerettes squared off against the top-seeded Boonville Lady Pirates Friday night for the championship of the Centralia Tournament.

The Lady Pirates got out to an early lead, but the Tigerettes clawed their way back to within single digits. But, in the end, it was not enough, as Boonville claimed the championship with a 50-44 victory over Macon.

It was a double dose of dog Friday night, as the Bucklin-Macon County Bulldog basketball teams played host to the La Plata Bulldogs in Tri-County action.

In the girls’ game, the pace was fast to start, as BMC jumped out to a five-point lead after eight minutes, 1510. The host Lady Bulldogs pushed their lead out further in the second period, outscoring La Plata 11-1 to take a 26-11 halftime lead.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs edged closer in the third period, outscoring BMC 11-9 to get within 35-22. La Plata got as close as four in the fourth period, but BMC made it count at the foul line, using free-throws to put the game away, giving Bucklin-Macon County the 43-35 victory.

Rachel Akins led the host BMC Lady Bulldogs with 13

points. Savannah Jochem and Cheyenne Peterson followed with nine points each. Caley Jackson tallied six points. Jacy Pate, Megan Liebhart and Kellen Robertson each added two points.

In the boys’ game, the speed of the La Plata Bulldogs got them started in a hurry, as they raced out to a 19-3 lead after a quarter of play. The visiting Bulldogs kept things in check in the second period, outscoring BMC 10-8 to take a 29-11 halftime advantage.

La Plata used a big third quarter to stretch the lead fur-

ther, outscoring BMC 22-10 to take a 51-21 lead into the final frame. The visiting Bulldogs went into cruise control in the fourth quarter. The host Bulldogs outscored La Plata 10-1 in the frame, but La Plata claimed the victory by the score of 52-31.

Missouri Farm Bureau Adopts Policy Positions and Celebrates 100 Years As the nation’s first and oldest state farm organization, Missouri Farm Bureau celebrated at its 100th annual meeting and conducted the more serious business of determining national and state policies for 2015. Almost 1500 members representing Missouri’s 113 county Farm Bureaus attended the meeting at the Lake of the Ozarks this week.

“Agriculture and Missouri Farm Bureau have experienced many challenges and successes over the past 100 years. Safer food, better nutrition, and increased life expectancy are just a few of the advances our society enjoys today much to the credit of the American farmer,” said Blake Hurst, president of Missouri Farm Bureau.

Voting delegates at this year’s annual meeting reviewed, discussed and approved policy positions on state and national issues. Most policy positions are long-standing, but several are new. Some of the major issues which Missouri Farm Bureau (MFB) will be working on for 2015 include the following: Reducing the current 1% cap on foreign ownership of Missouri farmland to .5%: Dating back to the 1970s, MFB has supported the state law prohibiting foreign ownership of Missouri farmland. In 2013 the Missouri General Assembly changed the law to allow 1% foreign ownership, but MFB members believe the limit should be reduced in half if complete prohibition cannot be accomplished.

Continuing to push back against the aggressive regulatory agenda pursued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other federal and state agencies: MFB renewed its call for the EPA and Army

Corps of Engineers to pull their proposed Waters of the U.S. rule and refrain from pursuing any other rulemaking that expands the reach of the Clean Water Act. Supporting the development of a new voluntary Missouri beef checkoff but opposing a second USDA beef checkoff: MFB supports the existing national beef checkoff program and favors the development of a new voluntary Missouri beef checkoff but opposes Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack’s proposal for a second national beef checkoff.

Increasing funding for Missouri’s highways and bridges: Even though voters did not approve the 1-cent sales tax for transportation, MFB still believes more funding is needed and is open to new ideas that would meet voter approval. MFB also supports increasing the Highway Commission membership from 6 to 8.

Increasing scrutiny of rails-to-trails proposals: Current MFB policy opposing the proposed Rock Island trail was strengthened to require notification of affected landowners, a public comment period, approval by local governing bodies, and a trail suitability analysis by federal officials to assess potential impacts on safety, health, privacy, biosecurity, and food security. MFB further opposes the use of state and federal tax dollars for development.

Protecting farmers’ and landowners’ information: MFB believes information reported by farmers to government agencies as a result of mandatory federal or state requirements should remain confidential. While members are interested in the use of unmanned aerial

systems (drones) for agricultural purposes, it is clear they are concerned about governmental aerial surveillance.

Requiring voter renewal of the 1/8-cent conservation sales tax: MFB policy supports placing renewal of the 1/8-cent sales tax earmarked for the Conservation Department on the ballot every 10 years similar to the 1/10-cent soils and parks sales tax. MFB also supports increasing the number of Conservation Commission members from 4 to 6.

Changing term limits and campaign reform: Currently, a Missouri legislator can only serve 8 years in the House of Representatives and another 8 years in the Senate, for a total of 16 years. MFB supports allowing a total of 16 years, even if the service is in just one of the two legislative chambers. MFB also supports comprehensive campaign reform that includes limits on contributions.

Prohibiting states from imposing production standards for reasons other than food safety or animal/plant health that apply to other states’ agricultural products: A court challenge to California’s egg law filed earlier this year

by Missouri and five other states was dismissed. MFB supports federal legislation to keep states from enacting such laws.

Addressing health care needs in rural areas: While MFB continues to believe the Affordable Care Act should be repealed and policies pursued at the state and federal levels that maintain health care choices, contain costs and eliminate unnecessary government regulations, MFB also believes federal and/or state health care programs should be modified to focus on rural health care needs.

Clarence Chronicles Well I am so happy as Christmas is approaching real fast. Notice I said Christmas, not Winter Holiday. I put up Christmas trees, and Christmas decorations. I make Christmas cookies and I buy Christmas presents. If you don’t believe in Christ and Christmas why do you celebrate the season.

Thursday night a large group of parents and grandparents went to Hawkins Theater in Shelbina to listen to a wonderful program put on be the Shelby Honor Choir. I went with son Raymond and Jessica, Norma, and Bella and I was so proud of all these great children. They are 4th, 5th, and 6th graders and they are great singers. I was so proud of our own Norma Wood. She is a wonderful singer and gave a very good performance.

Friday night we all went to the school Christmas program at Clarence School for the Christmas program. The gym and balcony were full as the students displayed their talents with a wonderful Christmas program titled The Holly Jolly Pirates of Pinataville. All students from kindergarten to 5th grade took part in the program and two of those talented girls were my granddaughters Norma and Bella Wood..

Saturday the official Lighting of Clarence was held on at the south park entertainment stage. About 30 people gathered for hot chocolate and cookies from Casey’s. New this year was the Veterans Christmas Tree displaying in memory of local veterans. During the evening children decorated the tree on the right side of the stage. Clarence Community Betterment Group was host for the lighting.

minister’s wife Kathy Hogan held a women’s Christmas party at her home.

Twenty women were there and we each brought a covered dish. We ate and laughed and had a great time. Everyone had brought a Christmas gift. We each got a pair of Christmas socks filled with goodies. Some got candy and some got lotions, candles and lots of great things. I got my socks filled with peppermints and chocolate kisses and two $5 gift cards to Panara Bread. Kathy came up with such an ingenious way to pick our gift. We passed all the sock gifts out and Kathy read “The Night Before Christmas.”

Every time she said “The” we passed our gift to the left. They are a lot of “the’s” in that poem. Those present were Kathy, Virginia Holder, Brenda Harvey, Jane Ann Oliver, Sue Kilgore, Pam Mettes, Charlene Pointes, Pam Chinn, Gwin Smith, Shirley Walker, Myrna Carothers, Sharon Jones, Debbie Carothers, Amber Hogan, Marnie Carothers, Cheryl Hayes, Ann Tracy, Diana Pascuzzi, Mary Beldon and Patty Truitt. We all had a very wonderful time.

Today I baked Christmas cookies and made tea so the Church children could have a snack while they were out caroling.

The bus stopped by about 7:30 and had 33 kids from 5 to about 16 and two adults.

Dan Hogan and Mike Beauregard. It was such a privilege to bake cookies for a group out spreading Christmas Cheer through our town. To make the evening great I had carols sang to me and I got 33 hugs for making cookies. That was a great trade.

Tuesday morning, Holly and the residents started wrapping ‘faux’ Christmas presents. They took all the pictures hanging in the hallways and wrapped them up to look like Christmas presents, then hung them back on the walls. They look so fun and festive! This afternoon, the residents helped Holly make a snowman out of a Christmas tree for the dining room. It is so cute! They named him “Frosty” and they completed the look with boots and a snow shovel.

Holly and the residents were busy decorating again on Wednesday. They hung ornaments on another tree, along with placing beautiful decorations around our home. Everything looks so nice!

Pastor Dan Hogan, from the Clarence First Christian Church, led Bible study this afternoon. Pastor Dan read scripture Santa Fe New Mexico resident is the Elan Jenkins daughter of​ from Luke 1:46-55 and talked about adorable Janet (Slaughter) and Michael Jenkins.

Bits From Bucklin CASADY REUNION The annual 2014 Casady Thanksgiving dinner was held on Thanksgiving Day at the Bucklin Methodist Church Basement.

TOPS MO 877 La Plata met Tuesday December 9th at 6:00pm in the La Plata Christian Church Fellowship Hall with 8 members weighing in. Gail led the meeting.

We opened with our T.O.P.S and K.O.P.S pledges. Roll call was, “Did you lose weight and did you call a TOPS friend?”

KOPS, Barbara G. stayed in leeway. Janet handed out preaddressed greeting cards for members to send to each other for encouragement.

Macon City Council Meeting Mayor Dale Bagley called the meeting to order.

The Council approved the minutes from the previous meeting The Council approved the Accounts Payable and Financial report.

La Plata City Council Minutes

City of La Plata Regular Session 12/09/14 Present: Mayor Lois Bragg, Alderman John McGee, Alderman Dennis Jones, Alderwoman Susan Walker, Alderman Trent Perry and City Clerk Bobbie Jacques.

Also Present: David Hodges, Golf Course Supervisor George Hansen, and Water/Wastewater Supervisor Mike Binder.

Mayor Lois Bragg declared a quorum present and called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited and Alderman McGee gave the invocation.

Alderman McGee made a motion and seconded by Alderman Jones to approve the consent agenda.

Motion carried ayes - McGee, Jones, Walker, Perry Visitors Comments: David Hodges addressed the Board of Alderman regarding the adjoining railroad property.

Mayor and Board Committee Reports: Mayor Bragg stated the City Park looks great the La Plata Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) have done a wonderful job with the Christmas Decorations in the City Park.

There will be a live nativity scene held in the City Park December 22, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. everyone is invited to attend.

Department Reports: George Hansen gave an equipment update, noting the fairway mower heads need to be rebuilt; the estimated cost is $2,500.00. The Ladies Golf Association has donated $1,200.00 towards the purchase of new controls for the irrigation system. Golf course turf chemicals this year have been reduced from $18,052.00 to $16,879.50.

Alderman Jones made a motion approving the $2,500.00 repair to the fairway mower, the purchase of the new controls with the $1,200.00 donated by the Ladies Golf Association and the purchase of Golf Course chemicals in the amount of $16,879.50. The motion was seconded by Alderman McGee. The motion carried ayes - McGee, Perry, Walker, and Jones.

Mike Binder requested the Board approve a pay increase in the amount of $1.50 per hour for Eric Smith as set in the Personnel Policies and Procedures manual for achieving his Water and Wastewater certification.

Alderman McGee made a motion and

seconded by Alderman Perry to approve the $1.50 per hour pay increase for Eric Smith. Motion carried ayes - Perry, McGee, Jones, Walker.

New Business: City Clerk Jacques read the general election La Plata Special Bond Election held on November 4th, 2014 results. 322 yes votes 68 no votes.

Alderman McGee made a motion and seconded by Alderwoman Walker to approve the certification of the La Plata Special Bond Election held on November 4th, 2014 results. (322 yes votes 68 no votes). Motion carried ayes- McGee, Jones, Walker, Perry Surplus Equipment: Mayor Bragg asked the Board to move the following equipment to surplus: two dog pens, street roller, hand held fogger, trench tamper, 2005 Crown Victory Police Car. Alderman Jones made a motion and seconded by Alderwoman Walker to surplus the two dog pens, street roller, hand-held fogger, trench tamper and 2005 Crown Victory Police Car. Motion carried ayes- Walker, Jones, Perry, and McGee. Re-imposing the .5% cent sales tax City Clerk Jacques informed the Board, Utility Coordinator Debbie Aldridge had requested the .5% cent sales tax be imposed on utilities, requiring an ordinance approved at the January 14, 2015 Regular Meeting.

Alderman Perry made a motion and seconded by Alderman McGee imposing the .5% cent capital improvement sales tax on utilities and for City Clerk Jacques submits the ordinance at the next regular scheduled meeting. Motion carried ayes McGee, Perry, Walker nays- Jones.

Old Business: La Plata Fire District The La Plata Community Fire Protection District requested to purchase 2.8 acres of land located at 1395 N. Owensby for a site location of its proposed new fire protection base of operations.

30 Oklahoma Indians 4-H members attended the 4-H club meeting on Wednesday evening. 26 members helped ring bells for the Salvation Army at C & R Friday and Saturday.

Carla and Tom Easley attended the Thanksgiving dinner at Charles and Sharon Howes home.

Macon Police News

On 12/04/14, an officer of the Macon Police Department made enforcement contact with a vehicle in the 800 block of South Missouri Street. During the contact, police obtained consent to search the vehicle and the driver. The driver was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and other items used as drug paraphernalia were located within the vehicle. Police also seized a powder substance which field tested positive for methamphetamine. The suspect, a 29year old white male of Carrollton (MO) was arrested for possession of controlled substance (meth), possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended and exceeding the posted speed limit. The suspect was transported to the Macon Police Department for processing and was later placed on 24hour hold pending formal charges at the Macon County Jail.

Student Publishes First Book

The Business Education Department of the Macon Area Career Center hosted a chili supper and book auction. In publishing a book a writer prints one copy and then makes revisions before the final draft is printed. This is called a proof book. It is the very first book in the printing process.

Dominic Bergfield is a special needs student at Macon R-1. Not having movement from the neck down makes using technology difficult. The business

and technology departments worked hard on getting Dominic what he needed.

Thru infrared technology, Dominic uses head movements to type. He typed an entire novel and even designed the cover, all by himself. Dominic was able to get his book published and now has copies for sale. The book is titled Earth and is for sale in the Business Education department of the Career Center and on Amazon.com. The business department wants to thank Dan and Economy Products for purchasing Dominic’s very first book.

MDC Reports One New Case of CWD in Adair County

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports that one case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been found in an adult buck harvested by a hunter in Adair County. This is the first case of the deer disease found in Missouri since early 2013.

This new case represents the 11th free-ranging deer that has tested positive for CWD and brings the statewide total of captive and free-ranging cases of CWD to 22.

All previous cases of CWD in free-ranging deer were from a small area of northwest Macon County where the disease was detected in a private hunting preserve in 2011. CWD was first discovered in Missouri in 2010 at a private hunting preserve in southeast Linn County.

As done in the past three years, MDC is again working with hunters, landowners, taxidermists, and meat processors in north-central Missouri to collect tissue samples from adult deer harvested during the fall archery and firearms deer seasons. MDC will report a summary of all testing efforts and results in early 2015.

The Conservation Department encourages hunters to take deer harvested in MDC’s CWD Containment Zone

of Adair, Chariton, Linn, Macon, Randolph and Sullivan counties to one of numerous cooperating locations in the region to have a tissue sample taken for testing.

Sampling locations include area taxidermists and the Northeast Regional MDC office in Kirksville during normal business hours. The sampling effort is taking place through the end of archery season, which closes the evening of Jan. 15, 2015.

Taking a tissue sample is free, takes only a few minutes and will not reduce the food or taxidermy value of harvested deer. Test results typically take 3-4 weeks and are posted for participating hunters on the MDC website. Since 2001, MDC has collected and tested more than 41,000 free-ranging deer for CWD statewide. This includes more than 7,800 samples since 2010 from freeranging deer in north-central Missouri.

Chronic wasting disease infects only deer and other members of the deer family by causing degeneration of the brain. The disease has no vaccine or cure and is 100-percent fatal. There is no evidence that the disease can affect humans.

Missouri offers some of the best deer hunting in the country, and deer hunting is an important part of many Missourians’ lives and family traditions. Infectious diseases such as CWD could reduce hunting and wildlife-watching opportunities for Missouri’s nearly 520,000 deer hunters and almost two million wildlife watchers.

Deer hunting is also an important economic driver in Missouri and gives a $1 billion annual boost to state and local economies. Lower deer numbers from infectious diseases such as CWD could hurt 12,000 Missouri jobs and many businesses that rely on deer hunting as a significant source of revenue, such as meat processors, taxidermists, hotels, restaurants, sporting goods stores, and others. CWD also threatens the investments of thousands of private landowners who manage their land for deer and deer hunting, and who rely on deer and deer hunting to maintain property values.

A letter was read outlining the upcoming workshop at Jefferson City on Dec. 13. Amendments approved at Grand Chapter were read advising the members that per capita tax has been increased to $8.60.

At the January 14 meeting we will be initiating a new member. Ruth Ann Dixson helped with installations at Cairo and Jacksonville.

Birthdays were observed by Jim Sorrell and Linda and Art Cullifer will celebrate their 54th Anniversary on December 17.

All present received a Christmas gift courtesy of Linda and Jim Sorrell.

Chapter closed in regular form. Prior to the meeting a carry in supper was held and enjoyed by all.

The dining room was decorated with Santas and snowmen courtesy of SallieAllison. The refreshment committee for January 14 will be Sallie and Bob Allison.

There will be an initiation of a new member and the evening will be formal.

Friends of La Plata Preservation Meeting The November 3rd meeting was called to order by Cindy Moore.

The October were read by Carolyn Craig, Arlene Bunch made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Wava McHenry seconded the motion.

The treasurer’s report was read by Arlene Bunch. Wava McHenry made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report. Ann Bullock seconded the motion.

There was no new business discussed.

Jack Crawford reported that the 3 bricked up windows on the ally side of the theatre and one on the West side are now weather protected.

FLPP is in the process of getting strong boxes for the move of the FLPP Museum out of the back of the library. Arlene Bunch and Cindy Moore have cleared out the back of the Annex so that the Museum pieces can be moved into that space.

Jack has continued to work on the roof of the Annex.

Macon Junior Varsity Basketball

The Macon junior varsity basketball teams faced off against the Palmyra Panthers Monday night. In the girls’ game, the Tigerettes opened up a big lead in the second period, and held on to defeat the Lady Panthers 33-27.

Lauren Chambers led the Tigerettes with 10 points. Kasey Hoelscher followed with eight points. Madison Ballance scored six points. Allison Simons cashed in four points. Kristen Larrick and Megan Cashatt each tallied two points, and Sarah Flowers added one point.

In the boys’ game, the Tigers came up short against their opponents, as Palmyra claimed a 69-60 win over Macon. Alex Burden led the Tigers with 18 points.

Jarrett Baker followed with 10 points.

Meade Fry scored nine points. Reece Dwiggins chalked up six points. Ethan Bray and Cody Roth each cashed in five points. Matthew Kothe tallied four points, and Shane Levett added three points.

In the Arena With Nate Walker No Special Session, questions relating to crisis in Ferguson Last week started with anticipation of Governor Jay Nixon’s earlier indication the he was going to call a Special Session to address budget concerns relating to the crisis in Ferguson and Metropolitan St. Louis. However, the Governor’s official call for a Special Session did NOT happen. It was difficult and heartbreaking to watch as businesses burned and looters roamed the streets of the once peaceful city. All the while, the images showed the members of that law enforcement community doing what they could to keep the peace, but too often being helpless to do much more than prevent the chaos from spreading further. Sadly, these images of violence overshadowed the many peaceful protestors who made their voices heard in a way that abides by our laws.

Regardless of what your feelings are about the grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson, I know we all can agree that the resulting destruction in Ferguson is a tragedy we do not want to see repeated in Missouri. One of the more disturbing facts that emerged from the riots was that the National Guard was sent to Ferguson to keep the peace, but then not authorized to take action on the first night when the majority of the damage was done. In fact, the mayor of Ferguson spent much of the evening trying to communicate with the governor to ask him to deploy the National Guard only to have his requests fall on deaf ears.

It was this failure by our governor to work with local leaders in Ferguson that again raised serious questions about his ability to handle such a difficult situation.

The scrutiny of the governor’s actions was intensified when he then declared that a special session would be necessary to appropriate the funds necessary to pay the Guard and Highway Patrol. There can be no doubt that the legislature was ready and willing to help in this matter, but within days it was proven by budget leaders in the House and Senate that the governor was completely mistaken in his belief that he didn’t already have sufficient funds to pay for the events in Ferguson.

In a move that stunned members of the legislature and the press, the governor then reversed course and admitted that the legislature was right, that he was wrong, and that a special session was not necessary. I give the governor credit for

heeding the advice of his fellow elected officials, but again his decision making has to be questioned as there was no need to even suggest a special session in the first place.

All of this discussion of a possible special session made one thing abundantly clear – that many Missourians, including citizens of the 3rd District and many of my colleagues in the legislature want answers and details in regard to how the governor handled the response in Ferguson. It was clear that we were going to seek those answers if called into a special session. And even now that there will be no session, I support the leaders of the House and Senate who have determined that they will press on with an investigation. They have now asked the members of the Joint Committee on Government Accountability to take a closer look at the governor’s actions, which will include seeking a detailed accounting of what has been spent to date and how it has been used. The committee plans to meet in the coming days. I will do my best to update you with what we learn. I do believe that we need specific answers to what really happened in Ferguson so that we can prevent likewise events to reoccur.

While the events in Ferguson have dominated headlines in recent days, the business of the legislature has continued on as we are now filing legislation for the upcoming session. Bill pre-filing officially began on Monday, December 1 and already the House has seen nearly 200 pieces of legislation introduced.

Subject matter of these bills ranges from supporting agriculture, voter identification, and requirements to payday loan reform to issues directly related to the situation in Ferguson.

These are just a few of the hundreds of bills we will ultimately see this session.

In the coming weeks I will do my best to provide you more details on the specific pieces of legislation that are likely to come to the floor for extensive discussion this session.

Cut to the Chase The Elf and Grandma’s Noodles

By Rebecca French Smith On my mantle, there sits an elf. He is not of the “Shelf ” variety. He is old, and not because of the curly white beard he wears, which my 5-year-old niece says is “weird” because he doesn’t look like her clean-shaven Elf. No, the bendable wire in his legs and arms has been repositioned year after year ever since I can remember.

He has been with me a long time — a Christmas tradition from my childhood.

My elf tradition and more have made their way into our family over time. New ornaments every year, an advent calendar and the hanging of handmade stockings have become part of our Christmas. I’m fairly certain I wouldn’t get away with dropping oranges in those stockings, like I had as a kid, but if the advent calendar isn’t stocked full of candy on December 1, I will hear about it. The kids overlook the occasional inclusion of ribbon candy, but that is more for me.

Apart from the oranges in the stockings and ribbon candy on the coffee table, our Christmas meal has some traditions of its own. Many memories and traditions revolve around food, and certain dishes must make the menu. If they do not, it risks becoming one of those stories told every year, “Do you remember that year we didn’t have Grandma’s noodles?”

Whether it’s turkey or roast matters not, as long as those noodles and broccoli casserole are on the table.

The dishes that mean the most have a history, a story to tell and a connection beyond the food. To change the recipe in any fashion is not allowed, nor is skimping or taking shortcuts. Using store-bought noodles instead of scratch, for example, is not a good idea. (Don’t ask how I know; that’s another story.)

As a result, the cooking of the holiday meal involves more thought and planning. I am appreciative of those who provide the ingredients, wherever they farm, because as Santa knows, some of those items don’t grow in December in Missouri, or any other time of year for that matter. Come to think of it, he is the culprit responsible for those oranges in my stocking. Perhaps he understands that we need farmers from many places to enjoy certain foods year-round.

As for new recipes or rituals, we have those from time to time, too. Some stick.

Some don’t. Every year, though, I try and sneak in a new dish or dessert. What did we ever do without Pinterest? It certainly makes discovering that next tradition easier — as long as it doesn’t replace my elf or Grandma’s noodles.

The Freshman Tour is an excellent opportunity for us to showcase North Missouri and our community to new legislators and leaders. La Plata Student Council Sponsors Blood Drive

The La Plata Student Council sponsored an American Red Cross Blood Drive at the Christian Church on Monday, December 8, 2014, with 39 people presenting to donate.

Five were first time donors. Unfortunately, eight were either unable to donate, or the blood clotted in the bag, so 31 good units were obtained. The goal was 33 units, but this is great for our small town. Lions Marvin Seidt, Gary Smith and Pastor Scott McVay, unloaded and reloaded the truck. Student Council members Tristan Borron, Azura O’Haver, and Frank Noah, led by sponsor Brook Fleshman, worked the whole drive.

Henry Wayne Williams, son of Jordan & Tiffany Williams, Paola, Kansas, celebrated his 1st birthday December 1st, 2014. Family and friends gathered on Sunday, December 7th for a farm animal birthday party.

A wooden white barn with a red roof was adorned with balloons and placed on the front porch to set the mood of the party as the guests arrived. The barn was made many years ago by great-grandpa Barney as a gift

for Henry’s dad, Jordan. Jordan and Tiffany made it good as new with a few coats of glossy, new paint. His 3-tiered cake was decorated with fences, black spots, green grass, and topped off with a red barn. The birthday boy’s personal smash-cake was a yellow haystack with a chicken roosting on the top. After lunch and cake and ice cream, Henry enjoyed opening gifts and playing with lots of new toys. Guests attending were Brick &

A Hoops competition was held locally at the Macon Elks Club. The first place winners will advance to district on January 10, 2015 in O’Fallon Missouri. The winning contestants can advance on to district, regional and national competitions. This program is free to the contestants. One boy and one girl from each age group will win a national title at the National Finals in Springfield, Massachusetts. National Champions have their names permanently inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
