Participating in a democratic system of government as a responsible citizen is difficult. It requires a large number of individuals to come to a consensus on issues affecting the entire community. For many Americans, this process is too slow and too messy, causing them to unconsciously wish for a single authoritarian figure to simply solve problems and move things forward. The June 16 Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council stakeholders meeting was a good example of that tendency.
