Cathedral High School Girls Won’t Forget Queen of Belgium’s Visit C

“You are the future, the next generation. We have to listen to you and speak with you,” said Queen Mathilde at the beginning of her conversation with students at the girls’ school in Manhattan.

Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium met with 12 students, as well as Cardinal Dolan and principal Maria Spagnuolo in a classroom. She listened to students’ concerns, answered their questions and discussed what she’s doing to help make the world a better place.

Queen Mathilde was in New York for meetings at the United Nations as an advocate of the U.N.’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the General Assembly to achieve a more sustainable and better future for everyone. These goals, such as good health and well-being, quality education, no poverty, zero hunger and gender equality, were discussed in the

College Continuation Program T

his summer marked the launch of our new College Continuation Program run by Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) team members Laura de Boisblanc, Lorraine Langdon, and Karen Kleppe Lembo. The program aims to help new CHS grads transition to college life, and prepare them for success beyond their four years at Cathedral.

On July 25th, the IVC volunteers hosted its College Celebration Luncheon for recent graduates, which included skills-building workshops with CHS alumnae and faculty. Topics ranged from time management to choosing a major. This fall, the College Continuation team is providing regular communications on hot topics to our new grads as well as helping connect them to CHS alumnae at their college who can serve as a friend and mentor.

Moving forward, the program will connect CHS alumnae on their respective college campuses and host onsite events to promote good study habits, networking skills, and other ways to get the most out of their

experience hearing what she talked about and how she talked about it was inspiring. We had an intimate and powerful conversation.”

Freshman Yanari Rodriguez admitted that she was nervous, but agreed that Queen Mathilde made conversing easy.

“The experience of meeting the queen was absolutely amazing. I will never forget that,” said Yanari, a parishioner of St. Lucy’s in the Bronx. “ I will remember her compassion for what she does and how nice she was.”

Yanari listened to the issues discussed, knowing their importance, and offered her opinion on one of the topics.

“I think (bullying) should stop in this world,” she said. “All types of bullying in general are unacceptable and not tolerable. It should not be happening in this world because it causes people to take their lives away and hurt themselves. It’s not OK.”

Cardinal Dolan greeted Queen Mathilde outside the school. She entered the gymnasium where Cathedral’s 500 students, faculty and administrators were waiting. The cardinal and Ms. Spagnuolo welcomed her.

“The interaction with girls was the most valuable experience. It was nice with all the girls downstairs in the gym to see her, but I think the one-onone up here made a huge difference.

Talking to them about what she does at the U.N. and a lot of the issues the girls can relate to personally made a big difference in their lives, and they’re going to take it with them for the rest of their lives.”

St. Otillien German Band Visit

O

n September 13th, Cathedral was treated to a performance by the St. Ottilien Band from Germany. The St. Ottilien Band has a longstanding tradition of visiting CHS every few years and performing with the Ladies of the Cathedral High School Marching Band.

CHS music teacher and Marching Band director, William Losier commented, “Having the band from St. Otillien school is always a great pleasure. I have been here since 2009, and this is the third time I’ve seen them at CHS.” St. Otillien is a church-funded, classical school and boarding school in Bavaria, Germany known for its focus on the Humanities. Their visit provided both a spectacular show as well as a welcomed opportunity for CHS students to meet and relate with high schoolers from another culture.

Mr. Losier continued, “In addition to them always being wonderfully entertaining, our students are often left inspired by their spirit. A few students (some band, some not) described their experience as being very emotional. It’s a music teacher’s delight to know that students are experiencing music on an emotional level beyond just listening.”

National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day On September 28th, Cathedral celebrated National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day in several ways: our Medical Gateways students held a fundraiser; all ninth grade religion classes hosted a toy drive for Go4theGoal, a nonprofit aimed at supporting children and families dealing with pediatric cancer; and Cathedral students donated several boxes of new toys for children going through a difficult time.

CHS Hosts Breakfast Run to Feed Homeless O

n Saturday, April 28th members of the CHS World Youth Alliance club met at 7:30 AM to participate in a Breakfast Run, a service project that aims to serve the city’s homeless population.

“It was a very humbling yet rewarding experience,” says Ashley Loor ’18.

“Some told me that hot water is considered a luxury commodity, and they were very grateful. It made me realize just how much we take for granted.”

Over the course of the semester, the club held several bake sales and fundraisers under the direction of Ms. Anne Andersson and Mr. James

Philipps. Using the proceeds, they purchased non-perishable foods like oatmeal, water bottles, and essential items such as toothbrushes, socks, shampoo, and feminine hygiene products. This spring, a dozen students set up a table at 23rd Street and the FDR Drive to distribute care packages, Starbucks coffee, and a hot meal to 30 men and women in need.

Cathedral’s World Youth Alliance club plans to continue to do Breakfast Runs on an annual basis. The club focuses on social issues such as racism, colorism, sexism, and economic inequality on both a local and global scale.

Students attend 2018 Oslo Freedom Forum T

his fall, several senior Cathedralites had the privilege of attending the Oslo Freedom Forum at Lincoln Center on September 17th.

The Oslo Freedom Forum (OFF) is an annual conference that features leaders in advocacy, academia, business, media, philanthropy, policy, and technology. Presentations include discussions on how to make the world more peaceful, prosperous, and free. The conference includes lively panels, interactive exhibits, breakout conversations, music and art displays, and more.

Speakers for this year’s forum included Russian democracy advocate Garry Kasparov, captain of Afghanistan’s all-female robotics team Fatemah Qaderyan, Turkish activist and New York Knicks basketball player Enes Kanter, North Korean defector Yeonmi Park, Venezuelan opposition leader Antonio Ledezma, Vietnamese pop star Mai Khoi, Zimbabwean civil rights activist and pastor Evan Mawarire, Tiananmen Square survivor Fang Zheng, Togolese blogger Farida Nabourema, and psychologist and PTSD researcher Rick Doblin.

Twelfth grader Areli Troyano was awed by the opportunity to hear from so many perspectives: “The Oslo Freedom Forum was nothing short of inspirational. With every story I heard my understanding and appreciation of freedom grew with it.”

Rossena Peteva ’19 was most impressed by speaker Fatemah Qaderyan, who founded the all girls robotics team, The Afghan Dreamers, despite being heavily discouraged from seeking education during her childhood in Afghanistan. Student body president, Miriam Cepeda ’19 remarked, “The activist from Togo, Farida Naborema, was very inspiring.

It was amazing to see a woman of color stand up against her government.

She put her life and that of her family in danger in order to fight for what is right.”

“I think the girls [from Cathedral] got a lot out of the presentations and I hope they enjoyed the day. The conference organizers were very glad to see so many students there since one of their goals is to spread awareness to young people especially.” says Elizabeth Toomey, Director of Communications

for Children’s Scholarship Fund, which extended the invitation to OFF to Cathedral students.

CHS history teacher, Steve Yozaites, chaperoned the trip and is already looking forward to attending next year’s forum with his students. “The Oslo Freedom Forum was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about contemporary issues in human rights around the world. They had the chance to hear from very powerful speakers about the nearly 4 billion people who live in the crippling grip of oppressive authoritarian governments.

They were particularly inspired by the stories of women activists struggling to have their voices heard in countries that deny or control freedom of expression, equality of opportunity, and universal suffrage.”

On the experience, Alexandria Pena ’19 reflected, “I appreciate being able to attend the Oslo Freedom Forum as it educated those attending about the true nature of oppressive and controlling governments. Being educated about these violations of human rights is the only way to stop them.”

Students Serve as ‘Literacy Leaders’ with NYPL F or the past year, select juniors and seniors have earned English Language Arts (ELA) credit by interning with The New York Public Library’s Literacy Leaders Program.

“Literacy Leaders” is a yearlong program for high school students where they can make a difference in their community and serve as role models for the elementary school students. Students must apply, interview, and be accepted before participating in the program.

For two days a week in the fall, students undergo rigorous training to learn how to become great reading tutors. After successful completion of this internship, students then qualify to become paid reading and writing tutors for first and second graders in their community.

Senior Mercedes Cuevas said of her experience, “It’s great because in a lot of internships or classes you learn how things are done, but here we are able to actually do the work ourselves and see the difference we make each time our students make progress.”

Tech Students Visit SUNY Oswego

ast spring, ten CHS students from our “Technology Foundations” class visited SUNY Oswego for a twoday college tech experience, which included presenting design projects to the university’s design faculty and students, and a roundtable about ergonomics, design principles, and the sketching and model-making practices.

“Our students made a strong impression on the predominantly male SUNY Oswego tech students, as CHS students were presenting work that was equal to or better than the work being done by college level design students,” said Mr. Jonathan Boo, chair of Cathedral’s Technology department and trip moderator.

Recent graduate of the program, Desteny Ventura ’18 says of her participation, “I personally joined because I wanted to know if I had what it takes to be a mentor, and I now feel prepared to be a leader in college and the workplace.”

Mr. Philipps’ New Book: Your Money or Your Life T

his summer, CHS religion teacher James Philipps published the book, Your Money or Your Life. In the book, Philipps encourages readers to question their attitudes towards ownership and material possessions, and leads the audience through different meditations and reflective challenges. On his guiding philosophy throughout the book, he shares: “What we do from Monday to Saturday – especially concerning the choices we make in how to use our time, talent, and treasure – is just as important as the worship we give God on Sunday.”

This is Philipps’ fifth year at Cathedral, and he is currently teaching our senior level courses, Social Justice and Vocation. Additionally, he is the CHS Campus Minister and co-moderator of our World Youth Alliance club. Your Money or Your Life is just the latest in Philipps’ impressive collection of published works, including educational textbooks. Altogether, he has authored fifteen books over the years and has his own author’s page on Amazon.com.

“What I like about this new book especially is that it invites people

individually and in a group to pray and to talk about the way they are living out the call to Christian discipleship. I have been teaching and practicing meditation in the classroom for many years; my students enjoy the practice and their enthusiasm really inspires me.

A few faculty members have even joined in from time to time!”

CHS alumna and board member, Sr. Margaret Egan, SC ’68 reviewed his work for VISION, the Sisters of Charity magazine publication, in which she remarked: “Philipps encourages readers to reflect upon the honest reality of their attitudes and personal choices regarding their ownership and use of material possessions...

Truly, the book’s reflection on faith, finances, and resulting choices is a welcome invitation to a fuller, ‘richer’ life for all, regardless of career or vocational choice.”

Danielle Tourdo Award

his summer, CHS guidance counselor Danielle Tourdo was honored by the New York Times College Scholarship program as a teacher who makes a difference. Ms. Tourdo was nominated by CHS Student Cynthia Pierre, a 2018 recipient of the NY Times College Scholarship.

Ms. Tourdo remarked, “Receiving this honor makes me stop and think about

how much we as educators impact the lives of our students. My motivation as a guidance counselor comes from the fact that, despite the many obstacles or hardships that face many of our students, they are able to find their inner strength to succeed. They don’t let their hardships define who they are. They are constantly teaching me something new.”

EDUCATOR PROFI L ES

FACULTY PROFILE:

VINCENT DOYLE "...the kids really need us, and the parents make real sacrifices to send their kids to our school. That, in and of itself, becomes part of your vocation."

E

nglish teacher Vincent Doyle loves teaching at Cathedral, and he loves teaching great works of literature. In his 34 years at Cathedral, Vincent has learned to challenge his students. “I throw them into the deep end of the pool. They don’t know it’s hard.”

Vincent grew up in Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan. He attended Columbia University, where he concentrated in English, and also studied Italian, French, and music. He worked in a hospital before earning his education degree at Manhattan College.

This year, in his 9th grade classes, Vincent is challenging students with a diverse range of literary works, and of course, Shakespeare. “I am giving them a grounding in understanding literature and writing strategies,” says Vincent. With his 11th grade students, he is focusing on nonfiction texts by American authors.

His mother, who earned a college degree and attended graduate school, where she studied Latin, graduated from Cathedral High School. Needless to say, she was excited when Vincent started his career teaching at her alma mater.

“She was very, very happy.”

He is a great believer in the importance of education, which is a value he learned from his parents, Thomas Doyle and Ellen Dennehy Doyle. “I come from a big family, and we all went to college. Most of us went to graduate school. It was just expected of us,” says Vincent.

Vincent remembers his own teachers who had built their careers at one school, such as his 9th grade Latin teacher at Xavier High School, who also had been his father’s teacher and football coach. “It seemed natural, to me, to find a place where I could have a career,” says Vincent.

EDUCATOR PROFI L ES

VOLUNTEER PROFILE:

ROSEMARY MAZZO F

or much of her 30-year career, Rosemary Mazzo worked in the television industry, primarily in the areas of media in sales and systems support. Along the way, she has seen it all.

She started her career as a secretary after college. She worked her way up the corporate ladder to become a senior vice president with Fox. Now retired, Rosemary enjoys sharing her knowledge and career experiences to help young women succeed. She saw a call seeking volunteers to assist at Cathedral. Rosemary, who lives across the street from the school, happily answered.

This is her third semester volunteering at Cathedral, where she teaches classes and leads activities to increase students’ understanding of business.

With Peg Kiely, Cathedral’s Business/ Technology department chair, Rosemary has taught several classes for the department.

This semester, Rosemary is co-teaching a course on business organization and management for juniors and seniors.

For the class, students will simulate creating their own businesses, and learn how to structure and successfully manage their companies.

“I am showing them how you build a company from the ground up, and what you need to develop a company,” says Rosemary.

She is also working with guidance counselors to offer activities that can help to boost students’ confidence, and improve their interviewing, resume writing, and presentation skills as they prepare to start their own careers.

For her students, Rosemary hopes to “spark interest in something they

may not have realized they could have done.”

Rosemary feels at home in the classroom. “Teaching is what I always wanted to do. I enjoy it very much, and it’s reciprocal,” says Rosemary, adding that she learns a great deal from the students.

During college, Rosemary was a student teacher at a local high school, and she graduated from Fordham University with a bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education.

“I wanted to write and be a teacher.”

She chose a different career path, but satisfied her interest in teaching through training and mentoring her staff and professional teams.

Rosemary says that she enjoys volunteering at Cathedral. “I love the school; I love the environment. I think the principal is amazing. Peg [Kiely] is terrific. I am impressed with all the teachers I have met, and the guidance

counselors, and how much they care for and support the students.”

Cathedral also makes it easy to serve.

“Whatever you can do, they are grateful for,” offers Rosemary.

She would encourage more members of the community and alumnae to volunteer at Cathedral. “This is a great way to show your gratitude for the success that you have received. It’s a wonderful opportunity to mentor and guide young people,” says Rosemary.

If she achieves anything, Rosemary wants to teach young women that their dreams are possible. “[I want] to tell them that I am an ordinary person, and I was able to do this. You don’t have to come from money; you don’t have to go to an Ivy League school. You can do it, as long as you have confidence and you apply yourself. It is possible.”

At Cathedral, he has found a teaching home. “Cathedral has been a very welcoming place to work, and it’s rewarding,” says Vincent. “One of the things that is rewarding is that the kids really need us, and the parents make real sacrifices to send their kids to our school. That, in and of itself, becomes part of your vocation. We are all in it together as a process to get the kids ready for college, and ready to be good citizens.”

Throughout his career, he has seen a lot of changes in the world, but, he insists, some things stay the same.

“Times change; but human nature doesn’t change, and kids aren’t that different from what they were like 30 years ago. I think basically kids are kids.

They are funny; they’re smart; and they are also sometimes ornery and smartalecky, but that’s just because they are complex.”

Vincent recalls, “There have always been kids who would do whatever you asked them to do, and those who do whatever they have to do to get by. On the other hand, there are some students who really struggle just to pass, and if Cathedral can get them through and

get them into college, that’s another Cathedral success story.”

In particular, he remembers a student who struggled to pass her Regents test. When she did pass, she went on to graduate from college and become a teacher of students with special needs. The Cathedral story is not just about celebrating students who go to prestigious colleges or earn big scholarships, says Vincent. Cathedral supports all students and helps them to achieve.

As a teacher, Vincent sees his goal very clearly. He wants to help his students develop their analytical skills, which are critical for navigating in today’s world.

“They can get the facts anywhere.

Nowadays, the facts that they need are at their fingertips on their phones, but their ability to separate what is important from what’s not important, and what is true versus not true, that is what they need,” says Vincent. “I think every teacher—whether we are teaching English or science or religion or math—we’re all trying to teach students how to think.”

Cathedral Prepares Students for a STEM Future T

his year all freshmen CHS students received Google Chromebooks, granting them access to all textbooks, study guides, and databases to help ensure their academic success. We are excited to see our faculty embrace and integrate Google Classroom into their lesson plans, test materials, and more throughout the school year.

Additionally, beginning with this school year, all freshmen will be enrolled in our Technology Foundations class as a requirement for graduation. For those who wish to continue on the track, they will be able to choose to pursue either technical design and production or robotics and coding.

Cathedral was a very close-knit school,” said Joan (Mulligan) Longo ’48.

and the lessons she had learned.

In addition to the Catholic education she received at Cathedral, Joan also cherished the strong friendships she developed while in school. After graduation, Joan and her circle of friends continued to get together, even if it was only once a year. “We would meet in the city and go to a show and have dinner together.”

Joan grew up in Kingsbridge in the Bronx.

She attended Cathedral’s Holy Trinity branch, and graduated from the main branch in 1948.

Music, English, and Latin were Joan’s favorite classes at Cathedral. She participated in the glee club and she also enjoyed performing in school plays and concerts. Most of all, she appreciates the Catholic education she received.

“The teachers, the nuns, were a Godsend. Maybe we didn’t think so at that time, but it certainly turned out that obviously they knew what they were doing.

Each of the sisters from different orders might have had a different approach, but they all emphasized the importance of respect, love for God, and how to proceed in life,” Joan said.

“We had a terrific education and a foundation for different things,” recalled Joan, who has held onto the lessons she learned throughout her life. She recently lost her husband, but the foundation of faith she gained at Cathedral has been a sense of comfort during her grief, as too when she also tragically lost a child. “If I didn’t have my faith and the foundation that was given to me at Cathedral, I never would have been able to weather all of these different things,” she said.

Joan met her husband, John, when

she worked at the phone company after graduating from Cathedral.

She wasn’t planning on applying to the job, but instead was lending support to a friend. She got the job, and she met the love of her life.

“He and I talked over the phone. A lot of the girls dated the fellows at the phone company, and everybody would say, ‘You got the best one,’” said Joan. Together, they were blessed with five girls and a boy.

They raised their family in Rockville Centre on Long Island. Joan feels proud that they were able to provide 12 years of Catholic education for their children, and she was very involved, serving as the president of the St. Agnes Mothers’ Club, president of the St. Agnes High School Parents’ Club, and president of the St. Agnes Rosary Altar Society. During her years of service, she often reflected back on her own high school experiences

As their families grew, they got together on Long Island when they could, even though life got busy. Over the years, Joan said she always made a point of reaching out, sending cards, and calling her girlfriends, in order to maintain those special bonds.

When necessary, she acted as the messenger, carrying news between friends and keeping everyone in the loop about each other’s lives.

Some of her friends from the circle have unfortunately passed, but they remain in her heart. “I loved them all,” said Joan.

This March, Joan traveled back to Cathedral from her home in Florida.

She feels blessed that as an 88 year old she was able to attend her 70th reunion and return to the school that has meant so much to her.

Joan’s daughter, Allison, joined her, sharing in the festivities.

“It’s a marvelous thing to see that Cathedral is alive and well, and to see how it has grown. It gives me great pleasure to see that,” said Joan. “Cathedral was an experience that I will always treasure.”

Sr. Nancy Kellar, SC ’58

F

or Sr. Nancy Kellar, SC ’58, whose three older sisters had attended Cathedral, the high school was the obvious choice. She loved Cathedral, and her history classes were her favorite. Sr. Nancy went on to study history and earned a master’s degree in European history.

In 1960, she entered the Sisters of Charity, taking the name Sr. Miriam Elizabeth. She began her teaching ministry by teaching 7th grade in St. Anthony’s in the Bronx. After four years there, she was delighted to receive an exciting new assignment: Cathedral High School.

Nine years after she graduated, she returned to Cathedral as a teacher, where she taught history classes for freshmen and sophomore students. “I always tried to make the classes interesting—not just give them dates and facts that were dry and dull, but tell them some of the wonderful stories,” says Sr. Nancy.

She had enjoyed being on the cheerleading squad as a student and she became the moderator for the cheerleaders on her return.

She even taught the girls how to twirl the baton.

Sr. Nancy had been teaching at Cathedral for four years, when she went on a spiritual retreat, where she heard the speakers talking about the Holy Spirit empowering them and giving them gifts for service.

“At that point, the Holy Spirit was a kind of a vague notion out somewhere, but that weekend I prayed for a new Pentecost, a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It changed my life,” says Sr. Nancy.

She felt called to evangelize, to work full time preaching and teaching about Jesus. Sr. Nancy tells the story: “That was confirmed one night, when I had a parents meeting, and I started talking to the parents about teaching the New Testament in my homeroom religion classes.

There was a deep quiet. I felt a new anointing, the people ‘were cut to the heart,’ as at the first Pentecost. Something in me said, ‘I need to be talking to the parents. I need to be talking to adults about the Gospel.’”

his fall, we were thrilled to receive a large photograph of the Cathedral High School graduating class of 1941. This exquisite gift was donated

by Susan Pieciak, niece of late CHS alumna Helen Mollihan ’41.

Susan shared, “My aunt, Helen, was the eldest of three Mollihan sisters that graduated from Cathedral High School.

She was followed by my mother, Hilda, and her sister, Elizabeth. All three embodied the spirituality and mission of Cathedral and would be proud to know of its continued educational excellence and devotion to young women of all faiths.”

We are so grateful for this donation; it has found a new home in our Alumnae display case and is a highlight of our archives.

With the blessing of the Mother General of the Sisters of Charity at that time, she left Cathedral in 1971 to begin doing retreat work at the same House of Prayer she recently had attended. In 1975, she helped found St. Elizabeth Seton House of Prayer in Scarsdale, NY, where she continues to live and minister.

In addition to leading retreats at the House of Prayer, she has traveled to 48 states, giving retreats and speaking at conferences. She also has served on National and International Councils for the Charismatic Renewal.

“I have been to 63 countries around the world, doing what I love,” says Sr. Nancy. Her book, There’s Always More, has been printed a number of

We are currently on the hunt for a copy of the 1964 yearbook, which was dedicated by the Class of ’64 to President John F. Kennedy. The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which chronicles the

times and translated into different languages.

Along the way, she has learned some incredible lessons. “I have learned that the Lord uses the poor and the broken vessels as an instrument.”

“So often, when I was called to do a retreat, I would be suffering from a migraine headache, feeling, ‘I’m not up to this,’” says Sr. Nancy. “When I responded to the call, I experienced what we always believed, ‘God anoints us for what he appoints us to’. I experienced the strength to do it, and the anointing of the Holy Spirit as I spoke. I knew that it wasn’t me.”

Wherever her journey has taken her, Sr. Nancy has stayed connected to Cathedral. Most recently, when

she attended her 60th reunion at Cathedral, she won the 50/50 raffle of $600. “I had an inkling (again, the Holy Spirit), that I was going to win it, and that I was supposed to give it back to the alumni association for the school.”

She says she was happy to contribute because she feels it is important to make the Cathedral experience available to young women for many years to come.

She recently ran into one of her former Cathedral students and the conversation touched her heart when the student fondly recalled how much love all of the students felt from Sr. Nancy. “It meant so much to me that they picked up on that I loved them. I still do,” says Sr. Nancy.

Alumna Maria Cecilia Salazar ’87 Speaks at 109th Commencement Ceremony On June 6, 2018, 106 students walked down the aisle of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and graduated from Cathedral High School, leaving the church as young women ready to take on the world. We were honored to welcome back CHS alumna Maria Cecilia Salazar ’87, to address the Class of 2018 as our Commencement Speaker.

Ms. Salazar, an Executive Director at JP Morgan for the past 17 years, offered advice on sticking to your values, both those learned at home and instilled at Cathedral. Below, we have reprinted an abridged version of her speech from the ceremony.

T

he world around us and the events currently taking place actually show that your class represents a generation of young people determined to change the world and who are making strides and effectively tackling issues – big and small – in order to make this a better place for all. Breaking so much ground also comes with a set of responsibilities and as I thought about that, it hit me that what I want to tell you about is always remembering what you already know, what you have been learning at home since you were born. And it boils down to a simple word: values.

How many times do we see a headline about a person in a leadership position brought down by a lack of integrity or humility, or just operating on their own set of rules that lack any values? These days, it seems that it is almost every other day, and what a shame it is, isn’t it?

The mere fact that you are graduating from Cathedral already speaks to how important values have been to you and your family. What are your guiding values, those things you have learned at home that are the core of who you already are and will continue becoming? It is the true north of your

life’s compass.

So, with that in mind and reflecting on my own path, I thought I could share with you two stories about the values I learned at home… home as in my family home, but also home as in Cathedral. I have learned that Cathedral was an extension of home; it is a place you can leave but can always come back to no matter the time of day or stage of life you maybe in. Unlike the rest of life from here on, Cathedral is the last stop before adulthood which is why it remains a part of that sense of home and community for many that have stood right here, on a day like today, just like you and me 31 years ago.

The first of these lessons in values was in my senior year at CHS, with an elective I chose and was really looking forward to as it was a new course in conjunction with Junior Achievement.

When I received the class schedule and saw who my teacher would be, I was so dismayed. It was the name of a teacher I had managed to avoid up until then, who had a reputation of being tough, difficult, and just mean. It turned out that while she was tough,

and difficult, she was also a caring person that only wanted what was best for her students. She set the bar high and her expectations of each person were based on each person’s abilities and accomplishments, no more or less... Now, as an adult at work my mind brings me back to this teaching and forces me to do my best to give the person a fair chance, whether it is a client or colleague.

The second of these lessons was fostered from a young age at home, and it is to treat all people equally. But it was really brought home to me by my father around the same time as my senior year at CHS, like the previous story. After an argument, about something I no longer remember, that ended with me “showing him up,” he was plain wrong and I was plain right.

He refused to openly acknowledge that I was right, much less say sorry; to drive home how “right” I was, I gave him the silent treatment to the point that when he would arrive home I would go straight to my room.

my room. I thought “aha, he’s finally going to apologize and tell me I’m right!” Instead, in his infinite wisdom, he did not apologize, at least not directly. However, what he did say has stayed with me until this day. “Lo cortés no quita lo valiente.” Loosely translated, it goes: “Courtesy will not diminish your rightfulness.” This was his way of saying that although I was right in whatever it was, showing a bit of humility and kindness was not going to take away what I had earned.

Every single time I have wanted to tell a colleague, boss, or anyone “See, wasn’t I right about this? You should have listened to me” – I remember this teaching because it has saved me from myself. The best compliment I received one time was from a colleague with whom I did not have the best relationship: “You know, one of the things that I admire about you is that you treat everyone around you with deference, even the busboy and waiters. The clients seem to really appreciate that.”

So, while I can tell you to never give up on your dreams, to follow your passion, and many things along the lines of what many speakers say at

commencement, I want to leave you with: “Remember your values.” For me, it has been about the importance of integrity and humility.

For you, think about what it is that has been an essential and integral part of who you have become and will continue to evolve into – was it “always tell the truth,” or “treat everyone fairly” – whatever they may be, these values will always serve you well and guide you throughout life, both personally and professionally. They are the foundation of your past, your present, and your future.

And so, before you walk through these doors today, remember to look to your

left and to your right, and remember that these are the people that have influenced you – your families, your teachers, your friends and classmates – and that they will always be here to cheer you on and remind you of your values when you need them to.

To quote my company’s CEO: “… family first, country second, and J.P. Morgan literally last. Without your family and the support of your family and what you learn from them in the good times and the tough times… you may not have a great life.”

With that, I want to wish each and every one of you a great life. Congratulations Cathedral Class of 2018!

Winifred Walsh ’50 has donated her book “Senator For a Day” to the Cathedral library and would be happy to provide signed copies to other Cathedralites. Her latest work is historical fiction, written when she attempted to garner a US Senate seat for the state of Georgia in 2000.

“Since I only had resided in Savannah for two years at the time, I knew my chances of winning were slim. In the try for the seat, I discovered a woman, Rebecca Felton, who was born in Georgia before the Civil War and was the first woman ever to sit in the US Senate; even for one day.” The novel covers Ms. Felton’s life, as a political appointment to the Senate and a key player in women’s suffrage in the south.

We had 35 alumnae that we were able

to find for our 50th Reunion in 2016.

Everyone had such a good time catching up with each other -- some of us hadn’t seen each other since graduation! A few of us met up the following year at Foley’s Restaurant in Manhattan. Kathy Love Quinn ’66 is working on her sequel to her most recently published memoir, All in the Family Part 1. After graduating from CHS, she worked at CBS for 38 years, got married to an FDNY fireman, and had two sons.

Part 1 covers her first twenty years after high school, while Part 2 will focus on her years at CBS, where she was the only woman at the time to return to work after having a second child. Kathy is looking forward to retirement, and focusing on her passion of writing.

’82 Evelyn Scambone Huston ’66 moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1976, and has two daughters and two beautiful grandchildren. After working twentyfive years for the Broward Sheriff’s Office, she has retired and is now enjoying all that retirement brings. She currently resides in Tamarac, Florida.

Helga R. Tomala ’82 has returned to Cathedral High School for the 201819 school year to teach Latin and English. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Classical Studies and French from CUNY Hunter College, and her Master of Arts in Latin Literature from Wesleyan University. She has spent most of the past two decades teaching Latin, Spanish, and French in charter schools and looks forward to bringing her expertise to the students of Cathedral.

Students at MHC receive full tuition scholarships; $7,500 for study abroad, independent research, and internships; and a MacBook laptop. Its programming extends through eight of the CUNY campuses; Leela has chosen to attend Hunter, where Macaulay also offers free dorming for the first two years, and Katalina will be enrolled at City College. “ I had also gotten into other top choices such as New York University, but the decision to choose Macaulay was an easy one. Knowing that I carry no debt or expenses will open up a world of opportunities for me that I would otherwise be unable to pursue,” said Leela. She is majoring in nursing and hopes to ultimately become a nurse practitioner. “I hope to use my Opportunities Fund grant to study abroad in England.” atalina shares, “I want to pursue K a doctorate in the future and think it is important to avoid racking up a large debt. I am majoring in Chemical Engineering at CCNY and looking forward to the opportunity to study abroad. At orientation, the chairperson of the chemical engineering department told me she sends students to Columbia and Sweden every year.” e are so proud of both Leela and W Katalina, and of all of our accomplished 2018 graduates!

IN MEMORIAM: Sister Margaret Mary McGrath ’38 Sister Margaret Mary McGrath, R.S.M. , who taught for 20 years at Transfiguration School in Tarrytown and also taught at many other schools in the archdiocese, died August 31 at McAuley Hall in Watchung, New Jersey. She was 98 years old.

Sister Margaret was born in New York CIty and was one of six girls and one boy.

A Sister of Mercy for 84 years, she was an outstanding educator in elementary education. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1934 and professed final vows in 1941. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University. She taught grades two through eight for 60 years.

Sister Margaret kept in contact with many of her former students.

She taught at Transfiguration 1977-1997.

She also taught at Sacred Heart, Yonkers, 1998-2001; Sacred Heart, Dobbs Ferry, 1970-1977; St. Simon Stock, the Bronx, 1967-1969; Sacred Heart, Mount Vernon, 1958-1967; St. Francis Xavier, the Bronx, 1951-1953; Commander Shea, Manhattan, 1949-1951 and 1956-1957; St. Catherine of Genoa, manhattan, 19471949; St. Cecilia, manhattan, 1942-1947; Regina Angelorun, Manhattan, 19411942; and Institute of Mercy, Manhattan, 1937-1941.

Sister Margaret lived a long faith-filled

life and stayed connected with so many people she met along the way, including students, neighborhood people, ministry coworkers, and those in need of a friendly face and a kind word. She loved meeting and greeting people and always enjoyed new experiences. After retiring from school, she was a sought after substitute teacher, something all educators would understand as a great testament to her teaching legacy.

In recent years, she enjoyed Senior Citizens’ meetings at Transfiguration Parish in Tarrytown, New York, while living at Marian Woods. Sister Margaret made many new friends when she relocated to Watchung, New Jersey. Her sister, Julia Kirby, and her brother James, survive her.

IN MEMORIAM: Theresa Ada Zaremba Coll ’45 Theresa Ada (Zaremba) Coll ’45, a longtime resident of Rutherford, passed away Friday, April 13, 2018 at the age of 90. She was born on October 19, 1927 to Anthony and Sabina Zaremba in Newark, NJ. The family moved to New York City, NY where they stayed until 1955.

Theresa graduated from Cathedral High School in 1945. She always spoke highly of the education she received at Cathedral.

Theresa worked in different departments as a Secretary at Fairleigh Dickinson University for 28 years and served as Corresponding Secretary for the Rutherford Ambulance Corp. She was on the St. Phillips Bowling

League in Clifton, NJ for 25 years, a member of the K of C Columbiettes in Rutherford and a “diehard” NY Yankees fan. She enjoyed traveling to visit her family, but also to see the world, with trips to England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and the Panama Canal just to name a few.

She remained very active with her growing family.

Theresa is predeceased by her husband Owen “John” Coll (1998). She will be deeply missed by her children John Coll & wife Suzanne, Michael Coll, William Coll, Theresa Coll, Stephen Coll & wife Sheri, Cindy Hastie & husband Alan, her brother John Zaremba, her grandchildren Christina, Michael, Phillip, Matthew, Samantha, Alexis, Lauren, Kristen, Justin, Liz & greatgrandchildren Kaydence & Olivia.

The Cathedral High School community extends its deepest sympathy to the loved ones of recently deceased alumnae and friends.
