Cantab Pi
Sector – IT
Total claim value – Undisclosed
Cambridge-based Cantab Predictive Intelligence (Cantab Pi) was helped by randd in its successful defence during an HMRC enquiry into its R&D Tax Credits claim.
HMRC raised questions about the validity of Cantab Pi’s submission in relation to the R&D projects it included, but randd’s experts were completely certain the company’s AI work was eligible.
Therefore, we requested a meeting with an HMRC R&D tax inspector to discuss the projects – after which, at the end of a lengthy process, Cantab Pi won the case and kept the entire value of its claim.
randd was instrumental in speeding up communication and making things happen. It was about supporting both HMRC and us to find a reasonable solution and save time, and I think that is what randd did really well. We appreciate the level of support we got from the entire randd team.”

AV Birch
Sector – Manufacturing & Engineering
Total claim value - £1,069,896
AV Birch designs and manufactures machinery across its range of seven divisions – access equipment, automation, engineering, lifting and handling, seals and hydraulics, timber engineering and timber incising.
Many of the projects on which AV Birch works are prototypes, produced to the bespoke requirements of its clients, which means research and development is a fundamental and integral part of its day-to-day operations.
The company believes randd is the perfect fit to manage its R&D Tax Credits claims, hitting the exact mark in being able to optimise the potential value of relief combined with a thorough knowledge of the company’s operations.
I think randd are fantastic in having that balance. They understand the accountancy side, because it’s a complex tax issue and a service we may struggle to find locally, and we have a great deal of confidence in that relationship. randd come to the table in terms of understanding the tax side of things but also taking the time to understand what we do as well. It’s very rare that someone would have that balance.”

Craftsman Tools
Sector - Manufacturing & Engineering
Total claim value - £426,000
A multi-award winning supplier of precision tool holding, work holding and supply chain management across a broad spectrum of the engineering sector, randd worked with Craftsman to successfully defend a claim and access a large amount of funds.
Guiding the company through the HMRC screening process, randd obtained the full R&D award that Yorkshire-based Craftsman was entitled to – with the Tax Inspector agreeing 100% that all projects qualified and that the claim was completely valid.
Adam and Matt of randd were very professional when the issue was first raised by HMRC, making sure we understood the appeal process and the R&D Tax Credit requirements, whilst also making sure they understood the technical aspects and innovation in each part of the application.
From this, they submitted a full appeal which was successful, and I would be happy to recommend them in the future.”
