Rye, Colorado, nestled in the Greenhorn Valley south of Pueblo, began its story in the mid-1800s. Originally part of “Brown’s Camp,” a trading post established by ex-trapper John Brown in 1841—strategically placed along Taos Mountain Trail’s crossing of Greenhorn Creek—the site served fur trappers, travelers, and early Hispanic farmers. After Brown left for California in 1849, the community lingered through stagecoach routes and intermittent settlement.
In 1866, Alexander Hicklin set up the first post office, renaming the hamlet Greenhorn—honoring Comanche chief Cuerno Verde (Spanish for “Green Horn”). Local ranching families, including the Bents and Sears, arrived in the 1870s, fueling growth. George Sears’s “30-Mile House,” post office, mercantile store, and social hall anchored settlement life.
The late 1870s saw the extension of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway and the discovery of silver, prompting permanent communities. By 1881, a post office named “Rye”—likely from native wild rye or the whiskey—had been established. The town of Rye was formally incorporated on November 22, 1937. Farming, dairy, and logging supported the community into the 20th century.
Located within a 20-minute drive, beautiful Lake Isabel is an angler’s paradise stocked with trout. A walking trail encircles the lake, providing access for launching kayaks, paddleboards, or other non-motorized watercraft. Rye, Colorado, offers year-round recreation nearby: San Isabel National Forest, Greenhorn Mountain Wilderness, Pueblo Mountain Park, and Lathrop State Park for hiking, fishing, and camping.
Rye, Colorado, experiences four distinct seasons: snowy winters, mild and rainy springs, warm summers, and crisp, dry falls. Annual highs range from 40°F in winter to 85°F in summer.
