he Covid-19 pandemic has brought challenges for everyone. There has been fear and uncertainty, loss of loved ones, livelihoods and our sense of liberty. The world around us changed dramatically almost overnight, and much is still uncertain. Like other local businesses, we were forced to adapt, and although we had to cancel publishing our magazines as usual this summer (The Margate Mercury, The Broadstairs Beacon and The Ramsgate Recorder) we felt it was important, as a trusted community publication, to still publish, but in a different form.

The result is the issue you are holding, a one-off magazine which unites our towns and showcases our community’s strengths.

When the pandemic hit it seemed as though Thanet, like the rest of the world, stopped. Except that wasn’t and isn’t the full story.

Amidst the eerie silence, our towns were changing, adapting, reframing. We have found that in the midst of perhaps the greatest crisis in most of our lifetimes, there is still cause for gratitude.

Individuals found space and time to reconnect and reassess. From Zoom meetings to virtual pub quizzes, we discovered creative ways to adapt

to our altered circumstances.

We are thankful for the NHS staff and all the key workers who strove to keep us safe and maintain essential services. For the people across Thanet that joined mutual aid groups. For the businesses that reworked their models so that food and other essentials could be brought to our doors.

For the volunteers, charities and organisations that found ways to support and engage with our young people when schools closed, and with our elderly, some of whom had no means of contacting the world outside their front door.

We are all still finding our feet in this new and ever changing reality. Some degree of the old life is returning, with shops, cafes and restaurants tentatively opening their doors, people returning to work, children to school. The stories in these pages hope to capture a moment we never knew we would share. To quote Brigitte Aphrodite, from her poem Ode to Our Street, which you will find on page 22: “None of us are perfect, but, we are what we are and when this is all over... It will be remembered how in this time our street did glow.”

Thanet, you are our street. And as the stories here testify, you did glow.

Initially “Stay Home, Save Lives” felt like a challenge I’d been preparing for my whole life. I’m constantly bemoaning normal life - having to do things such as go to work, go shopping, socialise.

Society is forever getting in the way of what “I’d really love to be doing”, such as reading from dusk till dawn, writing novels, learning an instrument, even learning another language. These are some of the fictional things that I frequently declare that I’d love to do if only I had the time.

So six weeks into the lockdown, I’m delighted to declare, I had not revisited mon français; the guitar I was gifted was still very much in its case; precisely zero novels had been penned - and the closest I had got to reading a book was perusing the subtitles of foreign Netflix adventures.

Pathetic really, isn’t it? If I hadn’t been constantly telling myself I was helping to save the NHS, and ultimately lives, I’d almost have been ashamed of spending this temporary retirement sitting in the garden getting fat, swigging lager, and occasionally doing some kick-ups.

At one stage I succumbed to those idyllic versions of myself and tried to be a better human than the sun-soaked slob. Nothing like a haircut to invigorate a change. I was quite happy with mine until one friend kindly declared on Zoom that the new do made me look like the Korean leader who may or may not be dead, a comparison which inspired a diet.

So I set up a home office, in the hope that a space and a bit of structure would bring about some writing. The only problem is that my flat is tiny and often filled with a woman insisting on doing yoga. So the only place I managed to secure was the porch, which is glass-framed. This resulted in a lot of bemused glares from the neighbours, making me my street’s version of David Blaine - though he only did 44 days in his glass box.

There is nothing like a global pandemic to make one focus on what is important in life.

For me that meant ordering a case of good wine.

If I’d really been on my game, I would have ordered hair dye (and more wine).

So imagine my delight at finding a packet at the back of my bathroom cabinet in week three.

A lockdown highlight, along with discovering a pack of hot cross buns I thought I’d lost.

Did I learn a new language or finally read Ulysses? Nope. I dove into DIY. “Big deal!” you may scoff, but consider this: I’ve a psychological condition - decoraphobia - which manifests in buying paint-stripper, sealant Frog masking tape etc, but that’s as far as it goes. The mere act of buying these items makes me think I’ve done the work, even though the cracked and unpainted walls are regular reminders of the exact opposite. Until, that is, lockdown happened.

After terror-scrolling my way through March, I faced my decorating demons in April. It takes me ages as I’m not very good, but progress has definitely been made!

So that has boosted my morale, along with going to Quex Barn. I feel so very lucky to have this idyllic spot right on my doorstep - it’s not your average shopping excursion that includes peacocks and fields of buttercups.

Other positives of lockdown include meeting lots more locals and being blown away at how the community has rallied to help those in need, or support local businesses.

I’ve been an avid fan of Ramsgate since moving here, but this period of the pandemic has further reinforced my appreciation for the town and its people.

May the crisis end soon, but let the sense of can-do within the community continue!

It’s week whatever. Early lockdown in Broadstairs meant waking to deafening birdsong, rather than rumbling cars. The rumble’s creeping up again.

Time seems to have slowed down. Every day someone (okay, me) asks: “Is it still Tuesday?”

Having mostly worked from home for years - fully dressed, telly off, the lot - I’ve found the family invasion a brutal change. Luckily we all love each other, but in the words of the old Dan Hicks song playing in my head: “How can I miss you if you won’t go awaaay?”

Our new normal is getting closer to my old normal, but it’s been a journey, folks. The homeschool rollercoaster drags us through meh days, shouty days and let’s-just-lie-on-the-floorand-chat days. I’d never heard of fronted adverbials and, you know, everyone nicks my pens.

Basically, it’s your regular messy-bored-mad lockdown. Simple stuff rules. Feeling well. Bakery from friends. Boozy gardening. Jam pizza (now a thing). A perfectly cooked baked potato. Realising Joe Wicks hurts. Insane anticipation levels for a warm loaf from @vikingbakehouse.

Shopping for neighbours has brought us new friends and homemade treats, and we still don’t know who left Easter eggs on our doorstep (thank you!). We’re building deeper links across our wide street, able to see our nurse neighbour’s face as we clap. May it all continue beyond admiring people’s cowbells on Thursday nights.

Time has also sped up. When we get through this, my burning desires are simple: hug friends, go for a drink, hop on a train to squeeze my mum.

The hugs and 700-mile round trip are probably out.

But at least things will be different.

When I’m no longer trying to work during a times-tables quiz (it’s always 56) I’ll miss these drifting days. More time together and less to do make a rare combination.

In systems of mutual aid, individuals in a community take on a duty of care, working together to find creative ways of meeting each others’ needs, including food, medical care, welfare and housing. Mutual aid differs from charity, as it is volunteerled and guided by the needs of its community members.

In times of crisis, the glue holding communities together becomes visible: people find innovative ways to connect and help those more vulnerable and isolated from facing this alone. We spoke to some of the people on the ground about how individuals and community organisations are using social networks as mutual aid systems

Mike Davis, a coder based in Cliftonville, created and launched the website for Thanet Coronavirus Assistance at the beginning of lockdown, after noticing the same questions about accessing food and medicine in isolation appearing on the Facebook group. “I was worried that local institutions wouldn't cope with the new and different problems we were seeing at the time,” Mike says, so he bought the domain name (thanetcoronavirusassistance. com) and spent a couple of evenings putting it together.

Mike’s user-friendly listing of local food delivery services, food banks, and other basic resources was adopted by the Thanet Coronavirus Assistance group on Facebook, prompting other skilled volunteers to get involved with its development.

They incorporated a language translation tool on the site for the diaspora communities in Cliftonville, as well as a form that allowed people to easily offer or ask for help. The response was “amazing”, he says. “Several hundred people filled out the volunteer form in the end.”

Cameron is based in Margate, and was a founding member of the Thanet Coronavirus Assistance group on Facebook, which formed in early March to “support communities quickly, as a lot of local authorities didn’t act for a long time,” he says.

Throughout the pandemic, the online group has become a network of local people looking out for each other, both offering and accessing support. Joining forces with local food projects and organisations, such as the Lifeboat Project, Cameron and other volunteers use the online platform as a friendly and efficient intermediary between people and the resources they need, such as food parcels, or delivery of prescriptions.

Time has been a key factor in the success of local mutual aid, he says, recalling a friend of his asking for advice when she was struggling to afford food for her child. “The moment she contacted me, I spoke to one of my resources who got food delivered to her within [the] hour,” he says. Meanwhile many have claimed they “don’t know what they would have done without our volunteers.”

Kylie, who works for the Kent and Medway Recovery and Wellbeing College, formed a small community of local residents over WhatsApp, to help troubleshoot concerns over getting access to supplies in the area.

Ramsgate Mutual Aid was made up of “complete strangers” looking for and offering help, and became a tightly knit group of friends.

One member of the group was recently rehoused and is living alone, self-isolating for health reasons. With no support network, Kylie says that members of the group have become like family for him, helping him to get food and checking in. “It really makes all the difference just that little bit of contact,” she says. “It has restored my faith in humanity.”

Lauren, based in St. Peter’s, initially sought to find those in need of assistance through social media, but seeing that some of the most vulnerable people would not be online she then turned to doctor’s surgeries and pharmacies to advise their patients, and leafletted around the town, providing her number for anyone to contact if they needed help with getting shopping or medication.

She could have “never anticipated” the response. “At the beginning I was receiving nearly 50-60 phone

calls a day” she said.

Lauren told The Thanet Tribune that early in lockdown, Naughty But Nice bakery contacted her after seeing her posters, asking if she could help an elderly man who had slipped a note under their door in the middle of the night, requesting a bread delivery because he was self-isolating.

Joining forces with the Gap Project of Queens Road Baptist Church - who were already aware of people needing support from the groups and activities they

run - Lauren and their volunteers decided to meet the need for food parcels. “It’s been heartening to see such goodwill,” Lauren says, praising the collective spirit of the local community: from the Red Lion pub who let her use their kitchen as a food bank when she started out, to the restaurants and hotels who donated food while they temporarily closed, the Copy Shop in St. Peter’s who printed her posters for free, and the local Rotary Club who donated funds toward their initial food stocks.

Marcello has been hairdressing in Ramsgate for 30 years, until the recent outbreak left him without the job that he “deeply loves”. For Marcello, central to his work are the customers, whom he called individually at the beginning of lockdown to check in with them. “It’s a very sociable job”, he says, and he knew some clients were vulnerable and relied on the social interaction of a haircut. A lot were isolating because they were “scared to go out”, so he offered to help them with their shopping. Included in the ten people he has been regularly helping during the crisis are customers who don’t have immediate family looking out for them. He has been

At the beginning of lockdown, Ayaan noticed posts on the Athelstan Road Tenancy Association group on Facebook, expressing concerns about others on the street flouting the new rules. “The language got quite offensive, especially toward the immigrant community,” Ayaan tells me. Seeing that many in those communities may not have a TV licence, or understand English, Ayaan translated key parts of the prime minister’s speech into Czech, Bulgarian and Romanian, with the help of others from the Margate Mutual Aid WhatsApp group, and stuck them up in the blocks on Athelstan Road.

“A major challenge that residents of Cliftonville West also face is limited access to the internet,” she says. With many in the immigrant community losing work due to the new restrictions and lacking the resources to apply for Universal Credit, Ayaan stepped in and started helping the families she knew from Despacito through the process, often meeting as her daily exercise in car parks.

“It would take me up to two hours to sift through their needs,” she says, often having to speak on their behalf, and relying on Google Translate to discuss sensitive matters, like consent for data. Over the course of lockdown, Ayaan has helped over 25 families get access to welfare. In that time the Margate Mutual Aid community assisted her in building a perspex barrier for her garden, which backs onto the street, so she could continue meeting people in a safer environment. “I’m really impressed by Margate,” Ayaan says.

Westgate-on-Sea

Matthew is a district and town councillor for Westgate-on-Sea, whose team quickly put together a volunteering scheme in response to the increasing concern about the virus in March. They handdelivered leaflets to all residents with a form and contact details for the volunteers assigned to their sector of Westgate. “Our volunteers would go out in pairs, following social distancing guidelines, and offer assistance to pick up prescriptions, essential shopping,

and deliver letters.”

Matthew also procured masks, gloves and sanitiser, ensuring the volunteers were as safe as possible at all times. “Safeguarding was key,” he says, with one in each pair of volunteers DBS-checked due to the sensitivity of handling money and personal details. Residents found that volunteers were a “lifeline”, Matthew says, hailing the “community spirit of Westgate,” for keeping him sane during these uncertain times.

While the majority of artists work in solitude, art is ultimately made with the viewer in mind - to be seen, experienced and to provoke thought. But with the shattering arrival of Covid-19, exhibitions and projects that artists had spent months if not years planning and working towards were all brought to a standstill. Globally galleries and studios closed their doors. Workshops, seminars and classes were cancelled. But, curiously, the art world seemed rapidly to find its feet, forging new ways to continue working

Take a tour As gallery doors closed, Carl Freedman Gallery launched Viewing Room #1, with an exhibition specifically curated for viewing online. Their virtual exhibition featured eight of the gallery’s artists, with the tour introducing visitors to each of their works (cfgviewingrooms.com). Turner Contemporary made sure we could still tour its groundbreaking exhibition We Will Walk – Art and Resistance in the American South via the gallery’s website, featuring works which have never been seen in the UK before. (turnercontemporary.org).

Ramsgate gallery Nice Things was due to exhibit works by Westgate artist Rory Strudwick. Instead How to Break a Hue was moved online, as the gallery promoted artworks on their website and featured short “meet the maker” films of the artist in his home studio. (nice-things.co.uk).

Keeping connected

Connectivity has been high on the agenda for many of Thanet’s arts organisations. Pie Factory Margate took to its social media to encourage people to share photos and stories of artworks they discovered at the gallery - and now own. Gallery managers Jenny Duff and Tim Williams say, “We wanted to share the love for Pie Factory and the artists who have shown here. There are many people like us who have found joy from artwork in the gallery, which is now in their homes.”

Open School East’s Young Associates Programme transferred all teaching online. Students received artmaking materials at the beginning of lockdown and tutors began teaching through Zoom. The school also focused on supporting students' mental health, encouraging daily walks and talking to them about how they were coping. In May the Young Associates started a new project with Graphic Design studio Kellenberger

White, making personalised backdrops for Zoom calls, as well as working with OSE 2020 Associate artist Jenny Boat to create animated illustrations about their lockdown walks to post on Instagram. See what the group is up to @oseyap.

Marine Studios has been keen to give people something to work towards and look forward to. Their project Back & Fill aims to use a pop-up recovery festival to create space for postponed events, inspire new work and create a focal point for seaside businesses who will need to bounce back. Local businesses and creatives are invited to coordinate events and work together, with the aim of drawing visitors back to the coast when it is safe to do so. See how you can take part at backandfill.uk Resort Studios continued with its immersive Sound and Vision drawing classes led by Lilias Buchanan, moving the lessons online. For each lesson Lilias paired an iconic album with an iconic visual artist and participants made work inspired by both art forms. Lilias says, “Moving the classes online worked really well.

It was a social interaction, an escape from our homes and great fun! It was a privilege for me to spend this time with such talented artists, local and international, with people joining us from Texas and Amsterdam!”

Resort Studios also established a support network programme called RESORTful, funded by South East Creatives. Mercedes Workman, the studio programmer, tells me, “The aim is to get grants and mentoring to creative freelancers, sole traders and small businesses in the southeast. There will be online webinars and tutorials as well as support for specific needs such as branding, sales and marketing, in among interviews, online exhibitions, art classes and more.” Find out more at resort.co.uk/ resortful Similarly Crate Space adapted and devised a digital programme continuing with their theme Continuing Professional Development for Thanet and East Kent Artists.

Crate aimed to engage participating artists, and encouraged their audience to contribute to the programme. They have also posted new opportunities for BAME artists to take part in Trickster, Teacher, Chaos, Clay which is a paid digital residency. Margate-based international curator Lee Cavaliere established CoLAB (thecolabsite.com), which is an online collaboration across six galleries globally, featuring artworks created on paper by both emerging and established artists. Lee said, “CoLab was set up in answer to the lockdown, but aims to continue and develop. The art world has historically been very slow to get online in any meaningful way, and thanks to the virus, it’s necessary.”

A percentage of all sales will be donated to arts and education charity the Sixteen Trust, which nurtures aspiration in young people with an interest in the arts.

Lee is also taking up the post of director of VOMA, the world’s first virtual museum of art. Conceived by artist Stuart Semple as a way to tackle restrictions to “real life” during lockdown, VOMA is aiming to position itself as a global institutional project, showcasing the best contemporary art, with historically significant pieces. Check it out at voma.space Birchington artist Kristy Widdicombe (@woodleastudio) launched an open lockdown studio at the front of her home. Giving away original artworks and plants (with her nine-year-old son decorating the plant pots), Kirsty said her main aim was “to make people smile, cultivate kindness, and to encourage those who take something to pay it forward and donate to a charity if they can”.

In Broadstairs, New Kent Art Gallery’s owner artist Karen King raised funds for the NHS by producing colourful paintings and greetings cards and selling them online. Joining in with the delivery services of many local restaurants, Karen hand-delivered purchases to people’s doors. She explained: “Making small sales was the only way I could keep the gallery viable during this crisis, and give someone a colourful memento of this very peculiar time in our lives.” New Kent Gallery has now re-opened its doors, follow @newkentartgallery on Instagram to find out more.

Rainbows also feature in an NHS charity print designed by Margatebased illustrator Melanie Johnsson, being sold through evermade.com, a collaboration she has found to be

very positive. Melanie says, “I chose to represent a woman with a huge, flowy, colourful mane of hair. She only spreads colour and light and her name is Joy.” Chalk Walk is a creative fundraising project, which has been established in direct response to the lockdown.

Encouraging creative participation to raise awareness and support for local communities, the project is fundraising for local frontline volunteers and small organisations working for children’s mental health and wellbeing in and around Thanet. These include Cliftonville Community Centre, BeYou by Porchlight, Home-Start Thanet and Ayaan Bulale. Go to the website chalk-walk.org for information on how to participate and donate.

Going solo Artists have responded individually in a variety of ways too. Pippa Derbyshire had to cancel her exhibitions planned for this year, both in Margate and in France, and so created her own online exhibition New Departure. It features her paintings of Margate’s sea and ships, all of which were created from her new studio on the 14th floor of Arlington House. You can see more at pippadarbyshire.com Illustrator Megan Metcalf asked people to send her photos of their lockdown washing up bowls, after noting that being at home all the time meant chores seemed neverending. In her typically fresh and fun style, Megan’s Instagram @meganmetcalfstudio is now filled with delightful illustrations, giving us an insight into people’s lockdown domestic life.

Also on Instagram, Artist Support Pledge has provided an outlet for artists to sell artwork and maintain an income whilst supporting other artists. Myself, Melanie Tong and Matt Odell are just some participating in the scheme, creating an economy for artists who lost work and opportunities due to the lockdown.

Many artists have also been donating from their earnings to charities, keeping the spirit of generosity alive.

The Covid-19 shutdown could not have come at a worse time for Thanet’s businesses.

Restaurants, pubs, cafés and shops were told to close less than three weeks before Easter was due to kick off the visitor season. After the initial shock, many businesses have adapted to keep serving customers old and new. And for some the crisis has prompted improvements and innovations that demonstrate Thanet enterprises’ adaptability, resilience and community spirit

“We took the decision at the end of March to close our store and cafe to the public and be wholly a fruit and veg shop. We started a same-day delivery service for people who called up and we hired some great van drivers. We already had a veg box delivery service and that has gone up from about 40 deliveries a week to 200 a week. The first month or so was very intense and we had two or three phones going at the same time taking orders. We had lots of calls from people who were isolating or looking after people and also calls from outside the UK from relatives of people shielding in Thanet.

It’s put us in touch with customers who wouldn’t necessarily have found us, including older people.

We reopened the shop in May and we’ll keep the delivery service for as long as people need us.”

“When we closed the shop and gallery I decided I had to use the time well. We were losing money and I thought the only way to increase business was to have a workable, flexible online shop. We’ve been learning as much as we can about online marketing to bring more people to the site. Half our online sales are to loyal supporters. One lovely lady who bought something online said: “I’d heard so much about your shop but I’m disabled and I couldn’t get out.” The other 40-50% of sales are to people from around the country with Scotland the furthest so far. These people aren’t necessarily looking for products from Kent so we will stock a wider range. We’ve re-opened a few days a week and for private views. We’ll always be a focal point for the local artistic community but I think the online shop will go quite a bit wider.”

“I was lucky because I had a website before I had a physical shop and when lockdown started it took off. People say in times of crisis we turn to books and this has been a testament to that. I made it easier for people to browse the website. I’ve been getting orders from different parts of the country through word of mouth or from people who have visited Margate and do 15 or 20 free deliveries a week. People from outside Thanet are ordering gifts for people who live here. On bank holidays when the weather has been amazing I’ve been trying not to think about what that would normally mean for sales. I re-opened on 15 June for five days a week and one day for local deliveries for people who rely on them.” ►

OPEN How businesses are operating is ever-changing. In June, non-essential shops began to open, and the easing of lockdown is expected to continue into July with the opening of cafes, restaurants, pubs, hairdressers, hotels and cinemas. Here’s a rundown of just some of what was on offer when we went to press. Check with providers for updates Grocers have been a vital service for people isolated or caring for others. The Modern Provider (@modernprovider) in Margate is delivering bread, milk and eggs for what people can afford. The Grain Grocer, Margate (@thegraingrocer) is open and delivering while Quex Barn (@quexbarn) in Birchington is trading and offering free delivery to people self-isolating.

Also check out J Prentis (jprentis.co.uk) in Broadstairs, Prentis Greengrocers (18 King Street) in Ramsgate and Nash Farm (@nashfarmthanet) in Margate for fruit and veg deliveries.

Restaurants and cafes have been hit particularly hard but that hasn’t stopped eateries finding new ways to serve food. In Ramsgate, Hot Meals Now Canteen (@hotmealsnowcanteen) offers contactless delivery and is supplying meals to the Salvation Army. Little Ships (@ littleshipsramsgate) is open for delivery and collection. For pizza delivery try Posillipo (@posillipo.restaurant) in Broadstairs and La Magnolia (lamagnolia.co.uk) in Ramsgate.

Caffeine nuts can get their fix at Storeroom by Curve (@storeroombycurve), which is serving coffee from a hatch door on selected days and delivering. Olby’s, Margate, is delivering and has been providing weekly food packages for shielding members of the African Caribbean community.

“We are a reduced-waste grocery with a café on the side. We’ve stayed open but we took the café tables away and reduced the number of people in the shop at one time. We started home deliveries and we’re doing about 20 a week. Most of the customers we delivered to were new. Many came to us through necessity because we didn’t run out of things like toilet roll, pasta and rice but now it’s opened their eyes to products they can buy without unnecessary packaging, so that’s been great. We’ll review whether to re-open the café month by month.

People can buy a takeaway coffee, fresh bread and cake and we plan to get a couple of benches outside for people who like to stop off. At the moment the retail side is more important to us because that’s the best way we can serve the community.”

Openings during the crisis include Ouma’s Kitchen (@oumaskitchen) for delivery and takeaway frozen meals and Innit Dough (@innitdoughmargate) delivering fresh pasta - both in Margate. In innovative rethinks, Buoy & Oyster (@buoyandoyster) and The Ambrette (@ambretterestaurant) in Margate are sending out meal ingredients for assembly with online tutorials and New Street Bistro (@ new_street_bistro) are offering a Sunday roast takeaway. In Ramsgate, Shakey Shakey (check their Facebook page) has reopened for takeaway fish and chips and The Ramsgate Tandoori (theramsgatetandoori.co.uk) is operating free delivery. Also in Ramsgate, A La Turka (@ alaturkaramsgate) is open for delivery and takeaway with a 30% discount for NHS workers.

When it comes to fashion, Albion Stores (@albionstores) and Ruskin (@ruskin_clothing) in Margate and KIT Lifestyle (@kitlifestyle) in Broadstairs are now open and selling online.

For preloved clobber visit Handsome Freaks (@handsomefreaks) and Peony Vintage (@peony_ vintage), which has founded a virtual market for vintage retailers in shutdown. Werkhaus have launched @werkhausmargatevintage on Instagram with daily posts of new stock and tips on how to be playful with personal style.

If you’re stuck in the house and bored of the same scene, liven things up with some new homeware. Specialist furniture store Simply Danish (@simply.danish) is open and trading on the web too. On top of regular opening hours, several shops are also offering by-appointmentonly shopping. For ceramics and plants visit Potters (@pottersramsgate), for vintage try Paraphernalia (@paraphernaliavintage) of Margate and Ramsgate and Stories and the Past (@stories_and_the_past) in Ramsgate.

In stressful times, health and wellness become even more important. Haeckels in Margate is offering free UK delivery on its natural skincare products and sending a free product to NHS workers. Hotpod Yoga and Margate Yoga Studio are teaching online for adults and kids and Margate Pilates Studio is also streaming classes. For some creative mindfulness Lovelys in Margate is delivering arts and crafts materials for free from its website.

On the culture front the Palace Cinema, Broadstairs, is keeping in touch with film fans, compiling home viewing ideas via its email list and social media, and selling gift vouchers to be redeemed once they are back open. In Margate the Tom Thumb Theatre is streaming live performances in its A Month of Sunday’s series.

Lucy Chudley Move Room, Ramsgate | moveroom.co.uk “I’ve taken my pilates class schedule online so people can join from home. We’re using Zoom like the rest of the world. It’s been a huge adjustment for me. I’ve been taught to be very much hands-on and visual; I do bodies, not computers. People are joining us from their living rooms, garages and gardens. Some people are doing it several times a week and some haven’t come back because they’ve lost their job or they’re looking after children and haven’t got that window any more. It means I can teach people who aren’t in Ramsgate. People who had moved away have rejoined and the film crew that were here just before lockdown are still coming. I’ll continue to teach classes online after lockdown. I was reluctant but it’s been my connection with people and it will be another arm to my business.”

We started off selling takeout beer but unfortunately it made more financial sense for the brewery to throw all the beer away. We’ve done pizza collections on Friday and Saturday and also Sunday roast deliveries. A good thing is it’s got us out into the community a bit more. We’ve created goodwill with people who heard about us through word of mouth or on Instagram. We’ve been taking food to some old ladies in Broadstairs and Ramsgate and that’s led to people who haven’t come to us before buying pizzas. Under the two-metre distancing rule we would only have been able to re-open the garden, but at one metre we can reopen the bar for bookings from 4 July. After this I think the way people use a pub and the way people eat out won’t be the same again.”

From the 1930 Salt March headed by Gandhi to the 1963 March on Washington led by US civil rights activists, walking has been used successfully as a means of protest for many years. As thousands of Thanet residents march against racism and structural inequality, we examine the origins of Black Lives Matter

E

mmett Till was fourteen in August 1955 when he left Chicago to visit relatives in Mississippi. After the white female cashier at a grocery store accused him of behaving inappropriately, her husband and his half-brother abducted and beat Emmett, shot him and dumped his body in the Tallahatchie River. An all-white, all-male jury acquitted them. Emmet’s mother fought for her son’s remains to be returned to Chicago, insisting on an open-casket funeral. Newspaper and magazine images of Emmett’s mutilated body sent shockwaves across America and beyond, and his killing is widely credited as a defining moment in the civil rights movement. In the words of Time magazine: "For almost a century, African Americans were lynched with regularity and impunity. Now, thanks to a mother's determination to expose the barbarousness of the crime, the public could no longer pretend to ignore what they couldn't see."

Fast forward 57 years to the 26 February 2012. Seventeen-year-old African American Trayvon Martin is returning from a local convenience store to the house of his father’s fiancée, whom he and his father are visiting. George Zimmerman, a white member of the neighbourhood watch, shoots and kills Trayvon, having reported him to the police as

suspicious. Zimmerman claims to have acted in self-defence, and the jury acquits him. It is this murder and its outcome that prompts founders Patrisse Khan-Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi to establish the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement.

Now a global organisation, Black Lives Matter Foundation Inc. states that it is “working for a world where Black lives are no longer systematically targeted for demise” and “imagining and creating a world free of anti-Blackness, where every Black person has the social, economic, and political power to thrive.” Sharing their mission and beliefs on the BLM website, the founders also write: "We are unapologetically Black in our positioning… To love and desire freedom and justice for ourselves is a prerequisite for wanting the same for others;” and: “We work vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and, by extension, all people.”

Tragically, it took the very public murder of another unarmed black man to galvanize support for BLM nationally and in countries as disparate as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Japan, South Korea and Brazil. Protests have been staged across Kent, and some 3,000 Thanet residents attended BLM marches in Margate and from Ramsgate to

Broadstairs, organised in June by the People Dem Collective and Hu Man. Like the BLM foundation, the participants were not seeking justice solely for an individual, but rather calling for an end to systemic racism.

Of all ages and from many races, local protesters carried messages including, “Racism is the pandemic”, “Why is ending racism a debate?”, “If we can teach racism, we can teach equality”, and “Justice cannot wait”. Among the reasons given for attending the marches in Thanet were, “I’ve always been interested in human rights issues”, “to raise awareness”, and “because it is the right thing to do”.

Ingrained in the public consciousness over the course of centuries, racist ideology rationalised the transatlantic slave trade, bolstered the propaganda war against abolition, and justified colonial rule. It shapes government policy, dictates what children learn in school, what we

hear and see in newspapers, in art, on the television and in film.

It influences how employers view CVs, how we think about and treat each other. Black and brown people in the UK are overrepresented in Covid-19 deaths, in the prison population, in stop and search, unemployment and school exclusion figures. Simultaneously, they are underrepresented in positions of influence and decision-making.

Also sobering is the knowledge that race-hate crime is reported to have increased by 193% in Kent from 2015 to 2018. And, according to a House of Commons briefing paper, Kent had the fourth highest level of recorded race-hate crime nationally in 2019.

As serving ministers write that “Britain is not a racist country”, the list of reports finding evidence of structural discrimination grows longer. It includes the Race Disparity Audit; the Windrush Lessons Learned Review; the Lammy Review

into the criminal justice system; the Angiolini Review into deaths and serious incidents in police custody; the McGregor-Smith Review into workplace discrimination; The Public Health England Review into BAME deaths from Covid-19; The Equality and Human Rights Commission Healing A Divided Britain report. More than 500 recommendations have been made, with very few implemented. And yet a new government review into racial inequality was launched in June this year, to be led, reportedly, by ministers who question the existence of structural racism. Wounds are not healed by attempting to conceal them.

Racism and its effects will never cease until we cease ‘pretending to ignore what we cannot see’.

Counter-protests and criticism of Black Lives Matter - including by a Thanet-based MP - also highlight the strength of feeling and disagreement surrounding the issue of racism. No doubt, the road to a fair and truly equal society is likely to be long and complex. Still, the journey to change has started. Oxford University announced the removal of a muchdebated statue of Cecil Rhodes, the Rugby Football Union is set to review the use of “Swing Low Sweet Chariot”, and the Bank of England says it will make reparations for slavery. From 360-degree history, to decolonising museums and defunding the police, we are starting to interrogate the stories we’ve been told and the beliefs that have stemmed from them; asking questions not only about the things we do, but why and how we do them.

In February of this year, Turner Contemporary opened its groundbreaking exhibition We Will Walk: Art and Resistance in the American South. Documenting the civil rights struggles in America in the 1950s and ’60s, the show, which features and celebrates the work of black artists, attracted praise and saw large local visitor numbers before lockdown forced its closure. This happened in spite of Thanet’s links with far-right groups such as the EDL and UKIP, and despite Margate being chosen as host for the first UK-based White Lives Matter march in 2016. Reflecting on the BLM marches in Thanet, many reported feeling “amazed”, “moved” and “proud”, both to be part of the anti-racist protests, and also to see so many local residents lending their support, particularly in light of understandable anxiety about the pandemic. The list of black lives “targeted for demise” was started centuries ago and contains millions of names. To cite a placard at a Thanet BLM march, “we must unite to destroy racism”, so that six-yearold Gianna Floyd’s words “daddy changed the world” can come true.

M

aybe I have sunset-tinted glasses on today, but, it’s hard to feel lonely on our street.

Our neighbour Gerry plugs in his electric guitar every day at 2 and plays Bon Jovi Bed of Roses.

The Seagulls making luuurve on the roof tops abuuurve.

Kate, the nurse down the road paints sunflowers on her garden walls, enabling the radiation of joy.

The kids are running around the streets at a social distance playing knock-down ginger, although, this is not an unfruitful annoyance of a game, they knock knock and before you open the door they’ve hidden behind the wall and left a token, a brightly painted rock with messages in capitals saying “STAY SAFE, STAY POSITIVE, STAY INDOORS”.

Slap-bang in the middle street, there’s a rainbow-window masterpiece sending messages to our health workers every Thursday, our clap for the NHS ’til our hands are sore.

Each week it brings this street a little (metaphorically) closer.

The things you take for granted on normal days have become so much everything now.

The muscle man with the tattoos all over him is walking back home from his daily walk… de ne na ne neh… This is our street’s Diet Coke break... de ne na ne neh... he’s our street’s eye candy… de ne na ne neh…

Sorry to objectify you, muscle man, but your tattoos are lovely.

In a front garden with chalk, a little girl draws a hopscotch. She explains that she hasn’t quite got the hang of it yet cos she’s only 4, but, maybe when she’s 5 she’ll be able to hopscotch it every time.

We are all grateful that ‘Pizza Tonight’ is still delivering. The guy that runs it lives at number 9. If he knows you live down this street, he might give you an extra barbecue sauce.

We can hear the clock tower bells ringing since the car numbers have diminished and the darling starlings are here again, all starry starry night in their plumage.

Gerry’s switched it up today, he’s playing Alanis “I’m broke but I’m happy, I’m poor but I’m kind, I’m short but I’m healthy, yeah!” I join in from my back garden. Me and Gerry call it a band rehearsal.

Spades, cups of sugar and bicycle pumps are being swapped, borrowed and left

disinfected on each other’s doorsteps.

The Parakeets are swinging, their chirps are strong. These birds are tipsy and singing their favourite karaoke song.

The boy visits the girl every afternoon; she is in her dressing gown whilst the world stops around them. They are lockdown’s answer to Romeo & Juliet.

On the tip of our road we see drug deals like cigarettes kissing in the night.

The woman across the way has a knowing smile for everyone and is virtuoso with the DIY. Gerry plays his first acoustic rock front garden gig. Teenagers film on their phones and kids dance, it’s a monumentus moment.

Not all streets are lucky enough to have a Gerry, my neurodiverse brother. He keeps everybody open, in time and full of love. He is the rhythm (guitar) of this street.

A guy hurdles over everyone’s back gardens, tangled up in washing lines and stampeding over barbecues. His grey trackies flapping in the wind, proclaiming over his shoulder; sorry everyone I’m in a bit of a rush.

The gale force wind comes bouncing down our street and a £5 note is ripped out of a pocket and catapulted into the air. You can get robbed by the wind round here.

She, the sunshine, will always rise in the east and set in the west and she’ll never quite hit us at her best.

Our street is not for the super-rich but my gosh it is rich in heart. This street has music blaring out of it. This street knows where its priorities lie.

None of us are perfect, but, we are what we are and when this is all over, our street!

It will be remembered how in this time our street did glow. It glowed, it glowed, it glowed so bright! So bright you could see it from a satellite.

So thank you our street for being what you are. You’re an ever-evolving constellation of stars. You’re beautiful, you’re weird, you’re boring, you’re wonderful.

A pressing concern at the height of the Covid-19 crisis was the lack of PPE for frontline workers.

Thanet’s sewing and crafting folk came to the rescue, discovering new talents and even winning an award along the way

he prize for best-named group goes to the Margate Scrubbers. It was created by Carole Dalton, principally to supply scrubs to Margate’s QEQM hospital staff. Her Facebook group attracted nearly 400 members, aged between 13 and 73, who have produced over 650 professional standard scrubs between them.

Carole is incredibly proud of the hardworking band of scrubbers. “One GP declared he wouldn’t go back to wearing government-issue scrubs while he had a set of ours,” Carole recalls.

Another item in huge demand

has been face masks, particularly for carers and key workers. With disposable masks an even rarer species than hand sanitiser, Paula Erol decided instead to make fabric ones. An early indicator of the scale of demand came with her first order: 1,000 masks for a care agency.

Undaunted, Paula and five friends set to work. She also set up the Thanet Face Masks Facebook group, which grew to 350 members; and a GoFundMe page, to help pay for materials.

The end result was over 10,000 masks distributed to 33 care homes, as well as to ambulances, pharmacies, and frontline local charities. The feedback was moving.

“We feel so much safer now” and “we can’t tell you what this means to us” were common messages.

The group were just happy to do something useful. “It made us feel less helpless when we watched the news,” says Paula.

Sometimes it’s the small things that make a difference. Sewers around Thanet made sets of palmsized fabric hearts to hold for both Covid-19 patients in hospital and their families, unable to visit, at home, bringing comfort and connection during those most painful of separations. ►

The crafty members of Westgateon-Sea Community Spirit Facebook group not only made 200 surgical gowns for the local Covid-19 testing centre, but also 2,400 scrub bags for NHS staff. These bags helped to protect the families of those on the frontline. The health workers would place their potentially contaminated scrubs into the bag before heading home, and then pop everything in the wash.

The final missing piece in the PPE set was protective visors.

Tom Brewin, head of design and technology at Chatham and Clarendon school in Ramsgate, reckoned his department could help.

A visor production line was set up, in socially distanced classrooms within the school, and later also in local fire stations. Eighty were made on the first day. They used the old school production method of guillotines and plastic line-benders (as the 3D printers were too slow). The masks were strong, pliable, and eco-friendly, made from recycled plastic. They could also be cleaned and reused many a nurse wrote their name on their visor and made it their own.

Once word got out, around 150 people were on board. “The head teacher was making them every day,

as was our head pupil, and whole families came in to assist,” says Tom. This collective effort produced up to 3,600 a day, and over 30,000 in total, for a range of places including hospitals, care homes, ambulance stations and hospices. Some visors helped to meet national demand, with Tom personally delivering them to prisons in Devon and Cornwall.

School governor Kate Gardner raised a whopping £16,460 for the scheme through GoFundMe, and a local firm donated materials. Such was the scheme’s overall success that it attracted media interest. Most significantly, it topped a national poll to be named “DIY Project of the Lockdown” by the Daily Telegraph.

But whether volunteers were making visors, masks, hearts or scrubs, it seems unlikely anyone was in it for the recognition, instead they were simply using their skills to meet a need. “It just goes to show that we can still do this!” declares Carole.

During a time when our fortitude has been tested to a level not seen since WWII, hundreds of Thanetians rolled up their sleeves, dusted off their tools and demonstrated just what we’re capable of. And for that, the love and gratitude has been immense.

Mental health matters Local counsellor Vela Robinson suggests some positive ways to support our mental health in light of lockdown and the pandemic

I

t is clear that we’ve just been through one of the most difficult and unprecedented periods in recent history in terms of our mental health. As a nation and a community we have all faced high levels of fear and uncertainty. We have had to confront the possibility of illness and death, and we have all had our lives upturned and altered in ways unimaginable just a few short months ago.

A simple definition of trauma is: a deeply distressing or disturbing experience or emotional shock following a stressful event. It’s important to recognise that many of the things we have experienced over the last few months have been traumatic. We have all been faced with daily death tolls on the news, shocking images from hospitals, and stories of young people whose lives have ended too soon.

We have also lived in the shadow of grief and loss, on a personal level and within our communities. Some have lost loved ones; some have lost their jobs or their income. We have all been faced with the loss of our old routines, and ways of life that we previously took for granted. The sense of invincibility and safety that we enjoy in this country has been temporarily pulled away. We may have been separated from those we love for long periods, or not have been able to come together to grieve, to visit hospitals or attend funerals.

It’s important to recognise that experiencing all of this can affect us on an emotional and mental level. Common responses to trauma and loss can include feelings of

sadness, anger, irritation, depression, hopelessness, anxiety and fear. If you have experienced feelings such as these during the lockdown, or in the aftermath, then this is completely normal.

As the lockdown lifts and we rejoin our communities, we may feel happy and relieved. But these feelings of anxiety and uncertainty may continue. And for some people there may be a sense of lingering grief or unresolved feelings about all that has happened. Sometimes these feelings may not emerge for a few weeks or months and can take you by surprise. It is important to take the time to recognise and honour the experiences we have been through.

This has been a unique time and we will all respond differently.

Connecting with a counsellor may be helpful. A counsellor will be able to help you talk through any individual changes or feelings about what has happened. They can help you process your experience, talk through anxieties and make any changes that you wish to make. You can find a local counsellor on bacp. co.uk or counselling-directory.org.uk Release the Pressure (0800 107 0160) is a 24-hour Kent based helpline which is there to help you discuss any worries or anxieties in a safe, confidential space.

Live Well Kent (0800 567 7699 or info@livewellkent.org.uk) and East Kent Mind (eastkentmind. org.uk) are local organisations that support people to improve their mental health and wellbeing through group activities and other sources of support. They are currently offering online services, such as creative writing groups, and wellbeing workshops.

There is a lot we can do on an individual level also:

Talking and sharing with friends, loved ones and colleagues about how you experienced the lockdown is very important. What did you struggle with? Was there anything you learnt, or appreciated about this time? By supporting and listening to each other, we help to combat isolation and recognise how common many of our experiences are.

Practising gratitude. Among any loss and change experienced, what do you still have? Even if it is as simple as a roof over your head, food, friends, family. Writing down a list of daily gratitude has been proven to boost our brain chemistry and make us happier.

Mindfulness. Take extra time in the next few weeks to notice your breath, your body, and the world around you. Focusing on the present moment has been proven to lower anxiety and help with depression and sleep problems.

Take a “mental inventory”. Take time to notice and reflect on what was lost in these last months. What bits of your old life do you want to take back up again? Are there any you would like to let go of ? Write these ideas down or share with a friend or loved one. By doing so we are setting an intention, and starting the important work of integration, meaning-making and planning a way forward.

As the country emerges from lockdown, we have the opportunity to come together to celebrate, reflect, and to create a new normal. We have seen acts of great kindness and strength by medical staff and key workers, and have all had to dig deep to find our own inner strength and resilience. In among the collective loss and trauma of this time there are incredible seeds of hope, of new possibilities and learning; we now know how adaptable, caring and resilient we really are.

Practitioner Diana Cox shares tips and insights into Emotional Freedom Technique Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, also known as tapping, is a little-known therapy which can be used on a self-help basis to reduce and clear negative emotions of any kind. The technique involves tapping lightly with the fingers on specific points around the head, face and upper body while thinking of an upsetting event or problem.

The points are at the end of the body’s main acupressure meridians and tapping on them signals to the body that it is safe to let go of its stress response.

This process reduces the stress hormone cortisol and increases hormones involved with immune function. It’s a very calming, gentle and effective process and can work very fast. It also works with children who can be taught to tap for themselves when they are feeling distressed.

There are many YouTube channels, including Tamara Donn, Brad Yates and the Tapping Solution, where you can pick a topic and tap along on issues such as clearing fear and worry, sleep and anxiety.

Tamara Donn has a series of tapping videos specifically helping people to deal with the impact of Covid-19, as well as videos for tapping with children to make it fun.

For deeper work, including working with trauma, addictions, phobias and longer-term anxiety and depression, it is advisable to see a qualified practitioner. This work can be done effectively by video call as well as in person.

The beginning of lockdown had everyone panicking about food. Supermarket shelves were emptying faster than they could be filled, and queuing became the standard experience of any trip to the shop. But for some it reached crisis point as people lost incomes, and every meal had to be provided in the home. Across Thanet, already overstretched food banks and the volunteers that run them, rose to the challenge

ntil a few years ago the only vehicles to leave the fire station in Effingham Road, Ramsgate, were fire engines. Now, it is the hub for Thanet food bank deliveries and distribution. Ramsgate Town Council (RTC) trucks are leaving daily laden with fruit, cheese, vegetables, tinned goods, meat, eggs, biscuits, soft drinks and frozen goods such as sausage rolls, all bound for Thanet’s food banks. Staffed by RTC workers and volunteers, the old fire station is a hive of activity with anything from tins of tomato soup to a mountain of cauliflowers being loaded up onto the vehicles. On some days produce is stacked up to the ceiling, all awaiting delivery to those most in need. At the height of the pandemic, seven full loads of up to 15 tonnes of food was being delivered every week. As we go to press, lockdown has begun to ease, and things have started to return to a more manageable level of demand. There is even talk of the project perhaps no longer being needed in the not too distant future. But for some the service has been a lifeline in the midst of a crisis.

The special Covid-19 project is the work of former home economics teacher Sharon Goodyer and her volunteers at Our Kitchen, who have been helping people in Thanet to access affordable, nutritious food since 2017. They are now spending the time they would have been preparing for their Summer Kitchen project ensuring everyone in Thanet has enough to eat during the pandemic.

(Summer Kitchen was set up in 2018, using the ‘wasted resource’ of school kitchens to provide high quality free food three days a week to families feeling the pinch during the school holidays. It has been cancelled for 2020 for obvious reasons).

Just prior to lockdown Sharon was giving away bags of food from outside her home, with those who could afford it paying a nominal amount.

She had to stop for safety reasons. In a new effort to ensure that anyone vulnerable or suffering hardship during the pandemic doesn’t go hungry, Sharon is bringing in vast amounts of food from the FareShare charity’s Ashford centre and distributing it to Thanet’s food banks. She said “Ramsgate Town Council have been absolutely brilliant, providing us with vehicles to collect the food and take it to the food banks. We couldn’t have done this without their support.”

The closure of Thanet’s restaurants during the pandemic was an irrelevance for residents who couldn’t afford to eat out. Our Kitchen started a Friday ‘takeaway service’ of affordable, nutritious food to be provided by selected participating Thanet restaurants. “You have to think ahead,” said Sharon. “Food banks are brilliant, but they’re not a long-term solution. No-one wants to use food banks. They want to choose their own food.

And how better to do that than by ordering a takeaway?” Meals were provided at cost, with a charge of £2 including delivery, available to anyone on benefit and pensioners. Puddings were another £2. Finbars in Westgate and Hantverk & Found in Margate piloted the project and were cooking up to 40 meals for Friday delivery.

Our Kitchen recently received some special Covid-19 government funding which has helped to pay their most recent bill from FareShare. “It was a massive relief because it means this money can now be spent on helping feed more people during the pandemic. Lots of families with breadwinners in insecure employment or who are reliant on the gig economy or zero hours contracts will be struggling more than usual. Sharon added: “I have been contacted by people on Facebook who can’t put food on the table, and they feel like bad parents because of it. Families are surviving on nothing.”

Food banks There are 15 official food banks in Thanet, all delivering food directly to the doors of those in need during the pandemic.

Our Kitchen delivered to, amongst others, The Lifeboat Project in Margate, The GAP in Broadstairs, Age UK and Salvation Army food banks in Ramsgate, Margate and Minster. St Austin & St Gregory have relaunched as Margate Independant Food Bank under the umbrella of Our Kitchen and have new premises based out of Union Methodist Church in Margate.

There have also been many less formal projects being run out of premises including closed down public houses.

Most food banks use the services of volunteers to deliver food parcels. A few people in need who come via homeless charities such as Porchlight arrive to collect their own parcels.

John Finnegan, who co-ordinated deliveries for St Austin & St Gregory’s food bank said in

May “Demand was up before Covid – we were distributing 100 parcels a week. Now it’s double that and supply is well up. We saw a big increase in self-employed people using food banks because they haven’t had any work in weeks and they can’t afford to buy food.”

Most of those who use food banks are on benefits of some kind, but they aren’t the only beneficiaries. Ramsgate’s best known dogooder Maxine Morgan, who volunteers at the old fire station and at some of the food banks themselves said, “If we have in a delivery of something unusual, say gingerbread men, we deliver them to hospitals or care homes to cheer people up. I always try really hard to make people who use food banks feel okay about it – there’s no shame in it, during the pandemic or at any other time.”

Volunteers tend to work three shifts a week of three hours, but most food banks will take any hours on offer. John Finnegan added “Our drivers are offered mileage, but most of them won’t take it. We are very lucky to have them.”

To be alone freely: How Thanet is supporting its isolated elderly Writer

ike many coastal districts across the UK, Thanet faces pressing age-specific challenges in the midst of the global Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Office of National Statistics, there are approximately 35,000 people aged 65 and over living in the region, more than 4,000 of whom are over 85. It is a demographic particularly vulnerable to the disease, and one for which isolation can be emotionally challenging, in addition to the stresses of coping with the shifting practical minutiae of the day-to-day. Thankfully a number of organisations are responding locally to these concerns by offering a range of new and ongoing initiatives to assist Thanet’s most vulnerable citizens.

In the wake of the spread of the coronavirus, Age UK Thanet shut down its hub activities to focus on delivering emergency support out in the community. This included delivering 80 “buddy box” meals a day, and performing “check-ins” for the most vulnerable with the support of Margate Fire and Rescue Team; providing a Covid-19 crisis shopping service with volunteers from Your Leisure; and a voluntary telephone befriending service, which reached over 2,000 people in two months.

The organisation also provides targeted advice and information about alleviating the financial stresses which have burdened so many since the outbreak began.

“People are having difficulties with benefits stopping or changing, and are struggling to get the right help,” says Vanessa Wood, chief officer of Age UK’s Thanet branch. “We are signposting and supporting with

information and advice, even down to finding dry shampoo for those people who are unable to wash their hair, or new microwaves for our vulnerable client group, who without such vital equipment cannot remain independent with their choice of meals.”

These initiatives are fuelled by the energetic kindness of people willing to help. “We always need volunteers to help support our services,” says Vanessa. “Many elderly people who were independent now find themselves requiring support and companionship, due to shielding and keeping themselves safe. We’re keen to secure partnerships with local companies that share our values and vision. If there are any individuals out there who wish to make a major difference, then we’d love to hear from them.”

Lou, a volunteer coordinator, says that the elderly and vulnerable are rewarding these efforts by providing inspiration to those more fortunate.

“I get a lot of strength myself from our older generation. They just seem to get on with it, with a stiff upper lip,” she says. “One couple clapped for us on the phone the other day (first the husband and then the wife).

They couldn’t thank us enough for being there and supporting them. It brought a tear to my eye.”

Changing Minds Kent CIC, a non-profit organisation “on a mission to help inspire, educate and reduce the stigma around mental health”, responded to the pandemic by creating a new bespoke project that can help address local needs.

“Before the lockdown, we were on the cusp of expanding our work into the wider community to reach out to even more individuals in need,” says Steve Migan, the organisation’s community engagement officer.

“When the pandemic started we had to adapt our service pretty quickly.

We decided to launch the Lifeboat Project in place of our usual social schedule. The project provides care packages of food and toiletries to vulnerable individuals all across Thanet, along with signposting them to other organisations who can help. We provide scheduled weekly packages to in excess of 30 elderly individuals at the moment, as well as fresh produce for several supported living accommodations in Margate, Broadstairs and Westgate. And we are offering online support through our social media and the Mentally Fit YouTube channel, which provides a range of informative self-care and exercise videos.” ►

The organisation also provides “online mental health first aid training”, for those wishing to either maintain their own mental fitness or develop skills that may be of benefit to those around them.

“While we are experiencing changes to our daily routines and social interaction during the pandemic, people may be experiencing mental health challenges,” says Steve. “This course gives access to information that they may be able to use to support their families, their friends and themselves, and to continue supporting others in the community.”

Steve adds that further support is encouraged, in the form of volunteered hours or donations of necessities. “We are always looking for volunteer drivers to deliver care packages and collect donations that are offered through the community,” he says. “Volunteers are welcome to apply through our website to express their interest. We are also seeking donations of food and toiletries. While the community has come together brilliantly through

the pandemic, there are still lots of people who are vulnerable and selfisolating who need support through care packages.”

Rebecca, a volunteer with the Lifeboat Project, says that the experience has been a heartening one. “Watching a large number of volunteers share their time, kindness and diverse skills, to help feed and take care of vulnerable people in our community, has reinforced for me how a community should always be,” she says. “We all need to take care of each other. It’s that simple!"

Two organisations demonstrating the efficacy of strategic partnerships in times of crisis are the housing group Orbit, “the UK’s leading developer of new homes for affordable and social rent”, and Global Generation Church in Margate (GloGen).

“Orbit has a dedicated community investment team which works with various community, charity and public sector groups all year round,” says Julie Potts, Orbit’s senior PR officer. “When the pandemic hit the UK and lockdown was enforced, Orbit was able to reach out to those groups very quickly, find out what was needed, and tailor its support accordingly. Orbit used its strategic partnership with GloGen to help get food supplies to those who needed it most.”

In addition to the 50 food parcels a week it now provides, GloGen also assists with obtaining prescriptions for elderly residents, and monitors their wellbeing with regular phone calls. “These calls received very positive feedback, because some people did not know who to ask for help or where to go to for referrals to services,” says Julie. “We hope that as a result of those calls, many will be accessing support they did not know

existed before, and will continue to reach out for that support post coronavirus.”

James Issott, project manager for the coronavirus activity at GloGen, says partnerships of this kind, and the opportunities for wider involvement they create, are invaluable. “We are so thankful to the support of Orbit Housing for our organisation during this time,” he says. “But in particular to all of the volunteers within the community who are working tirelessly to make sure parcels are made and delivered. It is so incredible to see the community stepping out to help one another.”

kent film foundation Kent Film Foundation works with young people in south-east Kent. We offer free screenings, workshops, and a range of clubs, including a Girl’s Film Club, LGBT Youth and Social Club as well as animation clubs. We aim to help young people realise they too can have the skills necessary for a career in film, media, arts, theatre, music and digital mediums, where schools and academic settings may not have recognised this potential.

project motorhouse Project MotorHouse in Ramsgate works with young people up to the age of 18 on projects which aim to widen their horizons and skill base and help them engage with their local community, which all improves employability.

Coronavirus put the brakes on some projects, but we launched a photography competition on Instagram @pmhisolate. Kids now will be telling their children and grandchildren about this time, so we think it’s important for them to capture what it was really like - the good and the bad.

We have won an Arts Council bid to work with Sadie Hennessy, print fellow at the Royal Academy, and will turn the images into decorative hoarding panels for the Pleasurama site. We also have a grant from Kent Community Foundation to create a separate exhibition. We want the community to see the great work our young people have been creating in these difficult times.

Benjamin Pamart, 17: How has lockdown changed your day-to-day life? The only major effect it has had on me is socialising.

Face-to-face activities are postponed for now, but our Covid-19 challenge invites anyone aged between 10 and 19 to make a short film, maximum length four minutes, while in lockdown, or in response to their experience. We’ve worked in partnership with the Ramsgate International Film and TV Festival, which this year went online and screened twelve of our films selected from 300 entries.

Submissions open until the end of June. The aim is to screen all films once schools reopen in September. kentfilmfoundation.co.uk What have been the highs?

I have had more time to focus on myself and figure out what I want to do with my future and that I want to enjoy it. I have also been taking up old skills, like barbering and carrying on with hobbies I love, like photography.

What have been the lows? Not being able to see my mates. I've never realised how much socialising can have an effect on you day to day. It demotivated me a bit because usually I would be waiting for the weekend.

Also spending a lot of time indoors, I prefer to be outside.

How have you used this time?

I have mainly been working. I started at Asda just before all of this kicked off. But when I’m not, I go out to do some photography, walk my dog or try and find something to do at home.

How will you look back at this time?

I think I would see this as a challenge that the world has overcome together, and has made everyone and everything stronger.

What have you learned from lockdown? My world has changed quite a bit because I would usually see my mates every week, go down the beach when I want, or go to the park and play football with them. And that is why I have done photography over this unpredictable time, to document my version of lockdown and to show people what I see.

pie factory music At Pie Factory Music in Ramsgate we work with young people up to the age of 25 on music and related arts workshops. During lockdown we moved online with a digital hub of activities to inspire young people to create, make, learn, connect and have fun.

We have been posting daily challenges on social media, delivering sketchbooks and creative resources to families in east Kent, hosting online groups for young people to connect and get creative, providing pastoral support through phone calls and social media, producing live events including DJ and movie nights, delivering food packages to families in need, facilitating young people to communicate with isolated, older people in care homes and delivering gifts to young people who are struggling.

Archie, 13, got involved in the PFM programme online during lockdown: How has lockdown changed your day-to-day life? I normally have a routine in the morning like get up, go to school, shower, dinner, bed.

I’m seeing my family more often, especially my sister. Not so much my mum and dad because they’re both key workers. My mum works for the NHS and my dad works at Royal Mail.

What have been the highs?

Seeing family and my dogs and rabbit. Also it being mostly sunny.

What have been the lows? Not seeing my parents that much, missing going up to see my favourite team play (Millwall) and playing for my local team, Margate FC.

How have you used this time?

Sometimes I wake up and don't know what day it is. But I have took on a new thing which is exercise, so a workout every day and 3-4 hours of homework. Also I just purchased a dartboard and 1,000-piece puzzle to keep me busy so I don't annoy any of my sisters!

What is the one thing you are looking forward to after this is all over? Going and watching Millwall play with my uncles and dad, and to get the famous London pie and mash (it's delicious). Most of all getting back playing football.

How will you look back on this time?

In the future if one of my children ask what was coronavirus, I will be able to say that it was a real big impact on the world, also on the NHS, key workers and especially the lives that were lost. Also I’ll say we had to stay home to save lives.

What have you learned from lockdown? I like gardening, building, and I’m good at puzzles. It has been hard but I try to make it normal by making a kind of a routine like do schoolwork at 11am and lunch at 1pm.

I've learnt that I get on my sisters’ nerves and that I have to support my mum and dad and other people to get through this horrible time.

arts education exchange Arts Education Exchange in Margate works with 11 to 30year-olds in partnership with schools, universities, local youth services, arts organisations and creative practitioners. We deliver personalised learning programmes to increase opportunities in an area of deprivation.

We wanted to provide a degree of normality during this crisis. It became apparent that not everyone has access to a device or the internet.

The Margate community were incredible and we received three computers, and more equipment through the Colyer Fergusson Hardship Fund.

We produced art packs leading to a collaboration with local illustrator Grace Attlee who developed an activity pack with contributions from Sprakenstien Studio, Jordan Grey and Alex Noble.

Sarah Furniss-Roe, 18: How has lockdown changed your day-to-day life? Luckily, not too much, but I have decided to wait until things are safer before actively looking for work where I will come into contact with people. This has given me time for my side projects, the work

for AEE including a documentary project about Covid-19, and a weekly session with local artist Annabelle Losa where I am developing my creative practice. I stayed indoors for two months and managed this well, but started to miss face-to-face communication with friends and mundane tasks such as shopping.

High points? All the work I’ve completed. I've learned much more during lockdown than I did during my many years of school. It has given me the opportunity to create more, and when I create something I put my all into it.

Low points? I've found it particularly hard to stick to a routine. My bedtime will vary from the middle of the night to the middle of the day. I experience more anxiety when thinking about being or going outside and interacting with people than I did before this pandemic.

How have you used this time? I have been learning languages, coding, editing/creating videos for YouTube, and even learning how to cook.

Through AEE I've been working on my drawing, film-making, and other forms of art.

What is one thing you look forward to? Getting a job, preferably one that I will enjoy and have room to progress in. Soon after that I will get my own place where I can express myself creatively without any limitations.

What have you learned from this pandemic? I've learned not to push myself too hard. I didn’t realise just how stressed out I'd been until the whole world came to a standstill and I took a minute to breathe and think about what direction I wanted my life to go in. Lockdown has changed how I view some aspects of life, it's made me appreciate things more, and I believe it has made me better informed on scientific, political, and environmental issues. I hope to adjust my lifestyle accordingly, to feel like I have done my best to look after myself, others, and the world.

It’s also tested my resourcefulness as an artist. At home, I don’t have the same materials as I would at college, but I’ve been determined to not let lockdown block my creativity.

Our Creative Industries department at Broadstairs College offers courses in Art & Design, Creative Media Production, Music and Performing Arts. College closures came just as students were working on final projects. We kept going, using online video class meet-ups, individual tutorials, the traditional phone call and a weekly e-newsletter.

In June each year, we hold an endof-year exhibition in a local gallery to celebrate the students’ success.

This year we have teamed up with Margate Now to host the exhibition on Instagram @margatefestival.

How have you used this time? I’ve been focusing on myself more, developing my art and looking at my mental wellbeing. I challenged myself to think more positively, something I’ve not always been great at. It’s an ongoing process, but I’ve made a great start.

For my final project, I was using photography to explore my struggle with body-confidence, and although the project was cancelled, I felt the theme was too personal to leave unfinished, so I continued at home.

It’s been a good way for me to keep my mind occupied and gave me a sense of purpose.

Edward Rutt is a final year Art & Design student: How has lockdown changed your day-to-day life? As the weeks went by, I felt the cabin fever set in.

“Daily exercise” suddenly didn’t feel enough.

What have been the highs and lows?

I think about what I am missing out on, spending time with my friends before we all go off to university. We won’t be having a “physical” end of year show, and it’s hard not to feel disappointed given the hard work we’ve put in.

But the highs have really helped.

Things like seeing my friends and family on weekly video calls. We sit and talk for hours over a cup of tea or a glass of something stronger.

I’ve learnt a lot about my own work ethic. Strangely, my timemanagement has improved, not something you associate with not needing to be anywhere!

What is the one thing you are looking forward to? Seeing friends and family. I know it’s a cliché, but it’s true. If this pandemic has taught me one thing, it’s that life is too short and I need to make more of an effort with the people in my life and appreciate them more.

What have you learned from lockdown? That I need people more than I’d like to admit, and I’m stronger than I thought I was. I feel more resilient and better placed to overcome things that before would have thrown me.

It will be a long time before I take “normal” things for granted again, freedom to travel and human interaction being at the top of my list.

It’s also been really eye-opening to see just how many people have failed to take this seriously. Some people’s ability to jeopardise their own and others’, safety has been quite unsettling.

Charities need money.

Perpetually. Much of it comes through public fundraising the community events and activities, product sales and bucket collections to which we can all contribute. They also rely on the less visible donations of trusts, legacies and grants administered by office-based experts who match fundholders to charities. But when a sudden global shutdown descends, where do charities turn for help?

T

he Stay At Home policy that protected UK citizens during the pandemic also meant the suspension of most fundraising and grant applications.

Yet the needs of the end beneficiaries (frequently the elderly, isolated, disadvantaged or abused) were unchanged and often intensified by lockdown. “A perfect storm” emerged, says Josephine McCartney, (pictured), CEO of Kent Community Foundation (KentCF), which works with fundholders including businesses, private families and national organisations, to provide financial support to charities.

Before Covid-19, KentCF had spent the past twenty years channelling cash to registered charities, community interest companies (CiCs) and constituted local groups. Each year it delivers £2-3 million in grants, often as awards of between £2,000 and £6,000 for individual charities, since even relatively modest amounts “can make a huge difference to some of the smaller and micro organisations”, as Josephine explains. Among the 25 charities awarded KentCF grants in Thanet last year were Michael Yoakley’s Charity, Thanet Countryside Trust and Kent Film Foundation.

services, domestic abuse facilities and advice bureaux have been particularly stretched. While the goodwill of those wishing to volunteer gave the populace a boost amid so much bad news, this also needed complex coordination by charities.

And Thanet is an area with a particularly wide spectrum of need, one which Josephine says funders are predisposed to support since its deprivation figures are the highest in Kent.

Fundholders were ready to donate and even increase their contributions when the pandemic hit, but KentCF recognised that the lengthy application process needed pruning.

It was their long-established understanding of grassroots groups that allowed the foundation to pre-empt the coronavirus effect and change tactics in early March 2020. “All bets were off,” says Josephine. “We needed to be able to help resilience-fund these smaller organisations.” The Coronavirus Emergency Fund (CEF) was duly launched on 23 March, with every stage of the application process streamlined for speed.

How exactly was this accomplished? By simplifying the application to a one-page form; conducting due diligence by phone; and bringing the awarding decisions in-house rather than using an external panel. Josephine is impressed but not surprised by her team’s rapid adaptation to remote-working under emergency conditions.

“We’re professional grant-makers; we know the landscape,” she says. These changes have also highlighted alternative ways to interface with each other and fellow organisations in future: “I’m more connected with everybody now than I was when we were in the office every day!”

CEF awards were made to charities working on the crisis frontline but also to those seeking security for activities scheduled later in the year.

At Margate’s Global Generation Church, KentCF funds helped elderly, disabled, homeless and isolated residents to access food, medication and befriending services. Gordon Road Area Street Scheme (GRASS), which fosters community cohesion, was able to pay site fees and non-

refundable deposits to cover some future events.

Changing Minds Kent, who promote mental health and wellbeing, were assisted with fuel, PPE and salary costs.

Post-pandemic, Josephine believes demand for funding will remain high, especially among the many small groups “who are not registered charities but who do a fantastic job, and they’re really vital in their local area”. These micro organisations need just an independent bank account and some sort of constitution to be considered for a grant.

Enquiries from potential donors are also most welcome. Some may prefer to form their own charitable trust fund to administer their gifting, but this can be hard work for anyone new to the concept of governance. By putting the operational and legal aspects in the hands of an accredited community foundation, Josephine explains, “You still get to do all the things you planned to do - set the criteria, establish the funds, agree your own philanthropy rules - but you just don’t have all of the admin that goes with it!”

Portraits of lockdown life Writer and photographer Rebecca Douglas tells us about her project capturing images of Thanet residents at home during the pandemic lockdown

W

hat a year 2020 has turned out to be. With so much to process while adjusting to this new way of life, I could see that although we were all sailing in the same storm the impact of the virus was being felt in many different ways. Over the past ten years I have captured some of the big milestone moments in people’s lives - weddings, the birth of a new baby, or perhaps even as family businesses grow. I know that as time goes by photos give us a connection to these moments.

My passion is seeing the connection between people and place, and there is nothing more special than a story told at home.

Being born and bred in Thanet gives me a deep sense of connection to our local area, and I love creating something meaningful through the work that I do with photography.

For me, there is something nostalgic about a front door photo - so many moments, such as the first and last days of school, are captured here.

When lockdown was announced I realised that we were in a unique period, never experienced before. Everyone was united in staying at home with members of their households - I have never experienced a bigger moment of global solidarity. Although the world

slowed down somewhat, so many life events were still happening in these places we call home. My project looked to explore and capture this.

As a freelancer, the work I normally undertake wasn’t possible because it is in a social setting. And as I am set up as a limited company, I was one of the people “falling through the cracks” of support. Knowing I wouldn’t be alone in facing this reality, I lobbied the government and even spoke on BBC News at 6 to highlight the issue. As I am shielding vulnerable family members locally, staying well is paramount to keeping them safe. So being able to create some work I could do carefully and at the same time donate some money to charity was key.

“I love creating something meaningful through the work that I do with photography” And so the idea of Lockdown Life was born, to capture Thanet households gathered at their windows and doors, creating a sense

of togetherness, and marking this shared moment in the history of Thanet. My first port of call was my insurers, who confirmed that since I could not work from home I was covered to work, as long as I adhered to social distancing guidelines. Shoot sessions were short in duration typically no more than five minutes - and were always captured observing a distance of at least two metres. It has been such great fun to meet local people and the shoots have been

used in some really beautiful ways to mark birthdays, anniversaries, and welcome newborn babies.

I felt that the shoot idea had the potential to take on a life of its own, and I really wanted to document how people were feeling at that moment.

When people requested to book I asked three questions: (1) What have you found challenging about lockdown? (2) Is there anything about this new way of living that has surprised you? (3) Everyone

talks about “getting back to normal”, what hopes do you have for the “new normal” that our future holds?

The answers have been completely fascinating, some so raw and honest, and form a broad social account of this moment in time. Themes include reflections on adjusting to the new way of living, a wave of joy at the sense of community that has blossomed, and optimism for new shoots of a sustainable, more community and people-centred

future. I am currently making plans about how to share these stories.

amsgate photographer Mel Chennell, has created a therapeutic fundraising video during lockdown, aimed principally at people who were selfisolating and missing the sea. It came together with the help of ten other Thanet photographers and brought some comfort to those temporarily unable to visit a beach.

The project came about after Mel noticed on her daily beach walk how therapeutic and relaxing the sea was, and sensed that there must be folks stuck indoors who were missing it. So she put out a call for Thanet seascape images, which she then compiled into a soothing Sounds of the Sea video incorporating some of her own photographs alongside those taken by fellow local photographers, myself included. These were accompanied by recordings of the sea.

As the video took shape, it occurred to Mel that she could do some fundraising with it. She chose to support the local charity Oasis, helping victims of domestic abuse. “I thought that it must be hard enough being stuck indoors,” she explains.

“Harder still if you’re in a position of danger from other members of your household. Besides we were all in this together so needed to look out for each other.”

Thanks to the generosity of the public, plus match-funding from Barclays, Mel has raised £1,356 for the charity’s timely projects. Mel was delighted by the public response to the video, which has also received TV and press coverage, and with the fundraising success. But there was another personal benefit. “I got my photography mojo back!” she said. “For the past few months I’d lacked direction and inspiration. Now I’m feeling rejuvenated and full of creative ideas. So I’m already putting out feelers for future portraiture work.” Until then Mel’s video has been helping people to find a sense of calm amidst a period of unexpectedly stormy waters.

Ramsgate’s Festival of Sound is a sonic celebration of audio in all its forms. Born out of Ramsgate Festival and Ramsgate Arts, this year the baton has been passed to a new team who are heading up an ambitious programme for this centrepiece of the Thanet festival scene. We talk to creative director Andrew Gibson and producer Gemma Dempsey as they prepare for 2020 How did you come to be involved in Ramsgate’s Festival of Sound?

Andrew: “My background is in arts and event management. This will be the fourth festival I have produced in Ramsgate and the third Ramsgate Festival of Sound. Sound and music production is one of the fastest growing industries in Ramsgate, a town that has always had a thriving music scene.

It made sense to promote and celebrate that in a festival. We’ve been lucky as we have been able to build on ten years’ work done by Ramsgate Arts and take the annual festival on to its next incarnation.”

Gemma: “The Ramsgate Music Hall and Vinyl Head (now Eats’N’Beats) were instrumental in me moving to Ramsgate. Both showcased great music and attracted audiences passionate about music and the arts, myself included. I’d worked as a music supervisor and a radio producer for years, as well as event coordinator and was keen to see

how I could apply my love of music and skill set to my new home town. When I heard how Andrew wanted to develop the Ramsgate Festival I was thrilled as it spoke to many of the things I am excited about: music composition and production, community and creativity. I got involved for the first Festival of Sound in 2018 and am thrilled to be working with Andrew for 2020.”

What is your vision, or ambition, for the festival?

“This festival is uniquely Ramsgate. There isn’t a festival quite like it anywhere else. It provides visitors with a unique way of experiencing a town, its heritage, culture, landscapes and people. We are already attracting interest from international artists and the festival has featured outstanding talent with international artists performing and presenting work alongside our immense local artistic community. We would love this to grow and for the festival to bring more visitors and artists to Ramsgate, becoming a destination event.”

What are the plans for this year and how have you had to adjust because of the coronavirus?

“The festival is usually held in July, coinciding with Ramsgate Week Regatta, but due to Covid-19 we’ve postponed it to 6-13 September. As the directives regarding public events are constantly evolving, we’ve had to adapt the programme accordingly. We’ll focus on The Sonic Trail (an audio tour created by composers and sound artists) as the main “live” part of the festival, as we can monitor attendance and distancing at the various venues and locations. In addition we will be commissioning the artists who were booked to perform live to instead create new work for our website ramsgatefestival.org/ as a virtual festival.

In this way we can maintain our commitment to supporting them through this very difficult time while reaching a global audience online. Given

how extremely difficult and tragic this year has been, we hope that the Festival of Sound will provide an uplifting and inspiring respite for everyone.”

What can audiences expect in 2020 and 2021?

“Running from 10-13 September, The Sonic Trail forms the heart of the festival and once again we’ve been blown away by the submissions.

Reflecting our theme of “sonic odyssey”, you can look forward to installations ranging from the humorous to heritage, archaeological to virtual and meditative to exhilarating. We’ve got great children’s entertainment lined up along with the ever-popular Ramsgate Society’s talks, films and cabaret. We’re working out whether we can present “live” or migrate online. 2021 is a big year for Ramsgate (the bicentenary of Ramsgate becoming a Royal Harbour), so we’ll be sure to pull out the stops for a fantastic Festival of Sound featuring some of the postponed highlights of this year and much more. Why is the festival so important to Ramsgate, and Thanet more widely?

“Of the three towns that comprise Thanet, it feels as though Ramsgate is less well known than Margate or Broadstairs, and yet each is wonderful in its own way. This festival gives Ramsgate some well-deserved promotion by highlighting the immense amount of local talent, and its stunning architecture and beaches. We hope it will provide visitors with the perfect excuse to check out the festival and then visit our nearby neighbours.

While it is hard to find a silver lining to the horrors of this pandemic, maybe one will be that people will seek to explore the UK rather than venture abroad, and we look forward to welcoming visitors wherever they come from!”

t's weird isn't it, the new normal? How many times have you said or heard that over the past few months? As Zoom pub quizzes and large supermarket queues have become the norm, coronavirus has undoubtedly impacted how society will operate in the coming months and years.

Live music may have become a distant memory, but the Isle’s many talented musicians have been doing their best to keep things going and bring entertainment right into your living room.

The challenge for Margate-based Lewis Colley, frontman of Squangey Bobbins, was one of venturing outside of his comfort zone. I’ve seen Lewis play a lot over the past few years and the thing that strikes you is his stage presence. He’s the ultimate showman and has so much confidence

in front of a crowd. However, playing a gig from his living room - and without his band - proved a very different experience. “I’m not usually one to get nervous, but the live stream gig I recorded back in March gave me some real anxiety,” he explains.

“Things ran through my head that I never thought I’d have to face as a musician - like what if my wifi cuts out?”

For Canterbury-based Tokyo Tea Room, a whole different set of issues provided the anxiety. For their stream they decided to bring together a lot of different musicians and host an entire night of live music. “The effort was monumental, so it wasn’t something we could just throw together on a whim,” says Daniel Elliot of the band. “The hardest part was making sure it was up to the kind of standard we had come to expect from ourselves.”

There’s been a common theme from everyone I’ve interviewed however - performing online has been incredibly rewarding. Broadstairsbased Kieron Stone, frontman of Broken Boats, says, “When you perform live and you have nice feedback, it’s so easy to forget those comments and focus on other things. However, with live streaming, you can see typed replies from people.

It’s definitely a great motivator to be able to read back over the lovely things that people said.”

Lewis from Squangey Bobbins has become an even more prolific writer - 14 new songs and counting, including a single released since lockdown began. Others like Jake Argyle have found that writing is a bit harder when you’re not mixing with and being inspired by others. Jake has focused on performing and planning for new single releases for the end of 2020. In the same vein,

the thanet tribune Medway- based Funke and the Two Tone Baby has been asking his audience to choose a cover for him to perform every week. His Quarantine Covers have been very popular with his audience and are well worth checking out.

For Ian Boulton who hosts The Songwriters Den open mic nights every month at the Tartare Frigate, it was a very different experience. At 72, he’s likely to be one of the last musicians getting back on the circuit. And for someone who has thrived on a live audience for his entire musical career, getting into the bones of the tech side proved a challenge. “I managed to get the whole thing running through my iPad, but there’s sometimes a little lag between the picture and the audio,” Ian explained. “It hasn’t stopped people enjoying the videos though.”

Ian has hosted his own gigs, as well as featuring alongside Maria Carlton who runs Set The Tone Booking Agency based in Ramsgate. I’ve seen Maria work tirelessly over the past few years to build what is the largest booking agency in the south-east. And in one fell swoop her business had to close. Maria manages over 150 artists in Kent and has a close relationship with a number of venues. She tells us: “I soon realised it was important to keep the music alive in any way possible. I created a Facebook group so that those able to perform from their homes, could play live sessions and continue doing what they love. The response and support has been overwhelming, and through the reach of social media our activity has caught the attention of a couple of radio stations, including BBC Radio Kent.”

A slight diversion from music is the HipHop Love Books Lockdown Project. Moon Lane children’s books and toy shop in Ramsgate have been hosting children’s story time sessions

every week for a while now, and they’ve been getting creative since the lockdown with fantastic results. Nicci Rosengarten, business manager and children's bookseller at Moon Lane, “spoke to her HipHop B-Boy family and friends to give their time for free to read children's story books for the store’s customers and social media followers to watch online.” The store has over 15 story time sessions aired to date and the project has attracted the attention of Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Local musicians need you now more than ever - and so do venues. Avid live music lovers may have seen the “Save our Venues” campaign by now. Thousands of live music venues are at risk of closure and there’s a real possibility that there simply won’t be a live music scene when the Covid-19 threat is over. Some very high-profile artists have been helping with fundraising, for example Frank Turner hosted a benefit show with proceeds going towards The Booking Hall in Dover.

Closer to home, Thanet’s venues have been getting involved in some online activity. Elsewhere in Margate have been hosting live gigs via their Instagram (@elsewheremarg8). The Tom Thumb in Margate have started A month of Sunday’s where you can watch along to live gigs every Sunday, with the option to donate via ko-fi.com/ tomthumbtheatremargate Ramsgate Music Hall have been selling live recordings of some of the iconic gigs that have taken place there. Hey DJ, don’t give up the day job Writer

From exotic locations to appreciative crowds, the life of a DJ seems glamorous and fun – but it’s hard to make a living from spinning records. We speak to two Thanet residents who’ve found ways to pay the bills and indulge their passion for beat-matching

W

hen he’s not playing hard house as his alter ego DJ Enthus, Joss Barnes is shaking things up as head of music at Wellesley House, a co-ed day and boarding school for 3-13 year olds in Broadstairs.

“We cover everything from Beethoven to the present day – music technology, rappers, DJ-ing,” he says.

Earlier this year the school opened its own recording studio, part of Barnes’ commitment to broadening the appeal of music. While there are plenty of brass, guitar and piano students at Wellesley, he points out, “Not every child plays an instrument, but there will be something that interests them, be it a film score, a chart hit, or a symphony. They might not want to perform, but maybe they want to be a sound engineer.” This progressive approach reflects the school’s ethos, which marries a long history (it was founded in 1866) with a modern outlook, emphasising the importance of creative arts alongside strong academic results.

Brought up in St Peters, Barnes is a Wellesley alumnus himself, while his mother has taught piano there for 30 years. He caught the DJing bug at a house party, while studying at London’s Institute of Contemporary Music and Performance. After spending his student loan on a set of decks, Barnes taught himself how to mix, with help from dubstep pioneer Plastician.

“Drumming and DJing are linked,” Barnes says.

“As a drummer, you count, and DJing is the same counting and beat-matching.”

Within a month he’d secured his first residency, playing “everything from the Black Eyed Peas to hardcore jungle” at London club The Mist. “It was an absolute dive! The only time it would be busy is when I’d rope in all my college friends,” he laughs.

Returning to Thanet after graduation, Barnes became Wellesley’s drum teacher, continuing to DJ at weekends. House parties evolved to bigger nights at Pasha and Egg, glamorous gigs in the Moroccan desert and lavish birthday parties with revolving 360-degree bars. He even set up his own festival, J-Fest.

Since being promoted to head of music and becoming a father of two, Barnes spends less time on the road, but still enjoys the variety of his two jobs. “If I was DJing and travelling constantly it would wear me down. And if I had to teach seven days a week, it would be a bit much,” he explains.

Post Covid-19, Barnes’ work has gone virtual.

Many of Wellesley’s international students have returned to their home countries, so he’s navigating time zones on Google Classrooms, and giving remote drum tuition with the help of a multi-purpose controller. As well as performing with a virtual band, the Dukes of Distance, from his garage-cum-studio, Barnes is live-streaming his sets. “It’s weird not having anyone around,” he admits. “All you can see is how many people are watching, and that might [only] be three! But it doesn’t matter, because I can play what I want.” wellesleyhouse.org

KATIE BARBER Co-owner of Albion Stores

“What I like most is the feeling you get from someone appreciating what you’re presenting”

n the surface, running a shop and spinning the decks seem like very different pursuits, but Katie Barber, DJ and co-owner of Margate boutique Albion Stores, says they’re both about “presenting stuff [I] love”.

“With the shop, it’s the labels, and with DJing, it’s the music,” she explains. “What I like most is the feeling you get from someone appreciating what you’re presenting.”

Opened in March 2018, Albion Stores - which Katie co-owns with partner Joe, a fellow DJ perfectly encapsulates that curated approach.

Inside the sun-washed space, the rails hold clothing from small, up-and-coming British designers interspersed with established names like Birkenstock and Champion.

They originally conceived it as a record shop - Katie and Joe fell in love with the three-storey building while living in London and bought it with the proceeds of their flat sale - but after discovering

the abundance of vinyl dealers in Margate they “didn’t want to tread on anyone’s toes”, so decided to merge their twin passions for fashion and music into a clothing boutique that also sold records.

“The brands we sell is stuff we’ve loved for years and would wear ourselves, and the music is from friends’ record labels, or distributors that we know and like,” Katie explains.

Having DJ’d since university, Katie’s decades behind the decks have seen her play venues as varied as Glastonbury, a “plinth in the middle of the sea in Beirut” and Margate Arts Club, spinning everything from disco, house and techno to soul and folk, though it’s Balearic house she’s ultimately become known for. As well as bagging a ten-year residency at the Notting Hill Arts Club’s Inspiration Information night (after sending legendary broken beats DJ Phil Asher her mixtape), she’s played top London parties like Clandestino at The End and Faith, though never as a big-room DJ, preferring the intimacy

and varied music styles of the alternative rooms.

“I’ve always seen it as a hobby rather than a job,” says Katie. “Sometimes I’m lucky enough to get paid something for it, sometimes I get tickets to festivals.”

Since opening the shop, Katie has swapped summers on the festival circuit for radio shows on Margate Radio and Brighton’s 1BTN FM. Post Covid-19, both are being recorded remotely.

The crisis also temporarily closed Albion Stores’ physical shop. Luckily they were able to sell stock via their website as well as through platforms like Trouva and set up a Spotify playlist to recreate the in-store experience. “The support we had from people buying online and getting in touch to say they liked what we were doing has been wonderful,” says Katie, “but I’ve really missed having people coming in and mooching around in the shop.” Now the store has re-opened, she’s hoping a big summer sale and personal shopping appointments will entice shoppers back through their sea-green doors. albionstores.co.uk

As Margate Pride marks its fifth anniversary, one of its organisers talks to participants who value our local version for staying true to the movement’s radical, community-centred vision

argate has an interesting history of Prides. The gaypevine weaves tales of a soggy Bucks Fizz singing on the seafront (after organisers forgot to check the tide times) and of the Pride shark that ran off with the fundraising money. I’ve spent many years at Prides across the world. Dancing on a float with drag queens dressed as Eddie and Patsy, with the actual Eddie and Patsy, was a particularly meta pride moment! The work I do centres around providing a safe and wonderful space for women and LGBTQ+ people. When I got involved with the 2016 edit of Margate Pride, I knew it had to be

While it remains illegal to be gay in 69 countries, and kids are still rejected by families because of their sexuality or gender identity, we will always need Pride. The only way we can provide a Pride for everyone is to talk to as many people as possible.

This is just one of the many reasons why I’ve had the honour of speaking to Thanet’s LGBTQ+ community.

Roger is founder of Thanet’s 50+ LGBT group. He describes Thanet in the early years as “grim”. “You had to be careful,” he continues. “There were a few bars, but it was open the door, look both ways and go straight in. People in the area got to know,

so there was always the possibility of danger. In the early days when Margate Pride came into being, it was a poor thing in many ways.

Two years ago I was on the parade and I thought, ‘This is really nice.’

What felt so good was the same sort of atmosphere I’d known years before was there. That sea of people coming down Fort Hill, that told you everything.”

Founder of LGBT History Month Sue explains: “The early pride marches I went on we were marching for our human rights. Now we have our rights, Pride’s job is very different.

London Pride is very commercial, which I’m not comfortable with we’ve lost the politics. How much do those floats cost? For one afternoon? I could use that money to fund so much work over the year.

What’s very important is to involve the community, which has been beautifully and cleverly managed with Margate Pride. When you consider that Nigel Farage thought his base was here, with that level of homophobia and racism. What you have proved is that he is in a minority, and what we’ve actually got is a community that is much more

inclusive than anyone imagined.”

Ronnie, who is at school in Westgate, tells me: “My first Margate Pride I hadn’t come out yet. I was 13 and I was there with one of my best friends. I was like, ‘What just happened? I’ve never seen my town like this!’ The last Pride, I was there with a girlfriend and it felt like mine; it felt more personal. Pride made me see there is a community behind me.

I can be the most honest person I am there; I wore a full rainbow suit! It’s the sort of Pride I want to be at.”

Gina has a bakery in the Old Kent Market. She came to Margate to transition in 2008. “The first three years were hard,” she explains. “I needed to get myself sorted in my head. Getting help was hard at the beginning. Margate life is amazing - I got the bakery in 2016 with my best friend Anita and her kids. I’ve got a good support network here Margate is like that, that’s why I love it. Pride is just a way of telling people you are proud to be who you are, showing we’re here, we’re part of the community. It’s the people standing alongside us, the grandparents, small children, everyone watching, the whole town gets involved.”

Alison and BJ remember the Prides in the 1980s: “Lesbian Strength, Hyde Park, always political. Then the

creeping crawl of commercialisation, Absolute Vodka, BA, the RAF. Then off to Brighton, great times, then admission fees, Virgin Atlantic, then ENOUGH.” Last year’s Margate Pride was Alison’s fiftieth: “We all had a stonking good time. Everybody LOVED Margate Pride, the noncommercial, homegrown thing reminded us all of the good old days!”

Nathan, aka Victoria Carriage, tells me: “Last year was my second Margate Pride. What an incredible day! And for me personally it was the first time my parents had seen me perform on stage in drag. They loved it! I have a real issue with Prides at the moment, throwing a pop star on stage. No, that’s a concert.

Pride is still a protest. We need to keep it community-based. I want family areas at Prides, teaching love and acceptance from a young age ignorance is learnt. Margate Pride is camp, fun, colourful fabulousness. If you want a really good, wholesome, inclusive, vibrant, family Pride by the sea, that’s Margate Pride.”

Homophobia starts young, so our support of LGBTQ+ people has to start early. A group of local artists started a youth group in 2016, making costumes and floats for Pride. It is now run weekly by Kelie at the Be You project, and open to 13 to

18-year-olds. For more information, email beyou@porchlight.org.uk.

There is also a closed Facebook group called LGBThanet+ run by 18 to 25-year-olds that meet for regular socials. It is such a joy to see these groups thriving. When we all march together at Pride you can really feel the community spirit, a genuine support network is forming and it’s incredible.

New book celebrates Ramsgate’s history Three hundred years of Ramsgate history, with over 100 new and archival photographs, is the subject of a new book, Ramsgate: The Town and its Seaside Heritage, charting the town’s transformation from a quiet fishing village to popular port and seaside resort.

Written by Historic England architectural historian Geraint Franklin, the book relies on documentary research and features contributions from president of the Ramsgate Society, writer and architectural historian Clive Aslet, Nick Dermott, conservation architect and heritage advisor to Thanet District Council, and Allan Brodie architectural historian and seaside specialist at Historic England.

From when only intrepid sea-bathers visited these shores, to the bustling elegance of the Victorian era, when Ramsgate was patronised by royalty, the book explores the architectural legacy left behind: fashionable terraces, crescents and squares, civic buildings and places of worship.

The economic decline of the 20th century, an experience shared by many British seaside resorts, is reflected on, before looking to the present, and future as the town seeks to redefine itself as an attractive place to visit, live and work.

Could Ramsgate's rich history, and its resulting grand architecture, hold the key to regeneration of the area?

Ramsgate Heritage Action Zone believes so as it prepares to launch its most ambitious project yet, looking to the past to plan for the future of the town.

amsgate is one of 20 places to have been designated a Heritage Action Zone

by Historic England, a public body working to preserve England’s historic environments.

The five-year programme began work in 2017, its key objective being to breathe new life into Ramsgate’s rich history and unlock its potential to help regenerate the area.

Working alongside Thanet District Council, Ramsgate Town Council, the Coastal Community Team, the Ramsgate Society and other partners, the project aims to engage the local community and increase understanding of the town’s rich local heritage.

Now, just halfway through the five-year programme, many projects have come to fruition.

Geological and topographic surveys have resulted in a deeper understanding of Ramsgate’s history helping to map evidence even from neolithic and medieval times. More recent landmarks have been preserved with nine historic features being granted listed status, including the Festival of Britain Fountain on Victoria Parade, and Registry Office Aberdeen House on Ellington Street, which was once a boarding school. Here we catch up with more of what the team has been up to.

Ramsgate’s Seafront Needs You A new project exploring how the area from West to East Cliff has been used and valued launches this summer. The year-long consultation Seafront Placemaking Project will rely on archival research, photography and paintings, and will include a call out for photos and memories from local residents.

Focus groups and one to one interviews will be conducted and workshops will be held with the community and Thanet District Council to develop realistic project proposals, source funding and available resources.

With this knowledge, future project proposals for the area, alongside an illustrated heritage “statement of significance”, will be put forward.

Ramsgate is home to a nationally important and Grade II listed collection of “Pulhamite”, the name given to the elaborate artificial rock gardens, complete with waterfalls, chasms, steps, arches, recesses and coastal cliffs that can be enjoyed across five locations – Madeira Walk, Winterstoke Gardens, West Cliff Chine, East Cliff Chine and the arches of the Royal Parade.

Commissioned between 1890 and 1930, when these were the height of fashion, the gardens are in need of repair and restoration. Work has already started. The Ramsgate Coastal Community Team secured £50,000 from the Coastal Revival Fund (backed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government) in 2018. The money is being used for a condition survey of the Pulhamite, supported by the Winterstoke Gardens and Eastcliff Projects volunteer group.

The Seafront Placemaking Project hopes to build on this and a celebration, with a public exhibition of research and material uncovered, is planned.

Pugin inspired Eight hundred porcelain tiles newly adorn Ramsgate’s Kent Steps. Designed by students from the Royal Harbour Academy and Chatham and Clarendon Grammar, the tiles are inspired by the work of Ramsgate resident and renowned architect Augustus Pugin.

The year long project, In Step with Pugin, is part of Historic England’s Heritage Schools Programme, and saw pupils work with Ramsgate Town Team and the Pugin Society to create 90 designs. A panel, including resident Pugin expert Catriona Blaker, local award-winning composer and Kent Place resident Emily Peasgood, and Bruce Sales, long-term resident of Kent Place and fishing tackle shop owner, selected 25 winning designs. All feature patterns which embrace Pugin’s love of flowers, birds, stained glass windows and the sea. Pugin, born in 1812, lived a short 40 years but was prolific, designing the Houses of Parliament, churches, cathedrals, tiles, textiles and furniture. The Kent Steps were built in his lifetime, and will now form part of the Pugin Trail run by the Pugin Society.

Georgian Brickwork is a Thanet based team of bricklayers who specialise in the restoration and conservation of brick built period and listed properties.

The team are highly skilled in repairing heritage brickwork, including lime pointing, tuck pointing, gauged arches, and carved brickwork.

Scrapbook Recipes A Root and peel crisps

s we’re all becoming more aware of the impact our consumption habits have on the planet, and after having to make our weekly shops last as long as possible during lockdown, it seems as good a time as any to revive the “waste not, want not” adage.

How many of us have a limp lettuce languishing in the veg drawer, on-the-turn fruit in the fruit bowl, or a half-empty pot of cream at the back of the fridge?

Unloved odds and ends can make the most satisfying meals, and although I’m as guilty as any when it comes to throwing away perfectly edible food, I try to chuck less in the compost than I used to.

Here are a few foods that are too good to bin, and some ideas for how to give them a new lease of life.

Don’t throw it away!

Add tomato vines to a simmering tomato sauce or vegetable soup to intensify the tomato flavour.

Don’t discard beetroot stems and leaves. Cook them as you would spinach or chard.

Steam cauliflower leaves until tender, shred the leaves and/or stalks and add to stir-fries or stews, or roughly chop and roast with spices.

Add limp lettuce to a pea or gazpacho soup. If it’s whole, halve and chargrill it, or pop the base in water until it sprouts fresh leaves.

Trim and slice broccoli stalk and add to stir-fries, roast, or eat raw with dips or grated into a salad.

Add strips of cucumber peel and a grind of black pepper to your lockdown G&T. Batter and deep-fry empty broad bean pods.

Roast scraped-out (and washed and dried) seeds from a pumpkin with spiced salt and oil.

Make root and fruit peel crisps: fry washed-and-dried potato/sweet potato/pumpkin/carrot/apple/ parsnip/beetroot peel dressed with oil and seasoning until crisp.

Beetroot stems

Use the liquid from tins of chickpeas (aquafaba) as an egg-white substitute to make vegan cakes, brownies, mayo and meringues.

Sauté shredded tired cabbage in butter with caraway or cumin seed.

Make fish-skin crackling.

Make tepache (a fermented drink popular in Mexico) with pineapple peel, core and rind.

Pickle watermelon rind.

Bake thinly sliced apples that have gone a little soft in a very low oven till crisp.

Keep leftover pickle brine for adding to marinades and dressings.

VEG-STALK SLAW Cut broccoli and cauliflower stalks into thin batons and toss in a mustardy dressing.

Top with a crunchy roasted nut-and-seed crumble. You can use celeriac for this, too.

OUT-OF-DATE MILK/CREAM There’s no need to bin milk or cream that’s gone a little sour. Use it in vegetable soups, béchamel, cornbread, pancakes, ragu, waffles, or as a substitute for buttermilk in marinades and baking (its tang is especially good in scones, waffles and soda bread).

LEMON SYRUP Cut squeezed-out/zested lemons into chunks, put into a bowl or jar, sprinkle over a few handfuls of sugar, leave for a few hours and you’ll have a beautiful syrup (add bay leaves or thyme if you like).

Use it in your boozy lockdown libations, to make a ginger and lemon tea, or for drizzling over cake or puddings.

Food waste tips

What to do with...

Stale bread Blitz to crumbs, then freeze and use in stuffings, as a coating for meat or fish, or sweeten and fry in butter and spices until crunchy and use to top ice cream or baked fruit.

Cut into cubes and fry or bake with garlic, oil, chorizo, paprika and diced veg (a sort-of Spanish migas), or blitz with tomatoes and onion to make a gazpacho.

Italians know a thing or two about

using leftover bread. Turn it into pangrattato, aka “poor man’s parmesan” (breadcrumbs toasted in oil and garlic), panzanella (summery Tuscan tomato and bread salad), papa al pomodoro (Tuscan tomato and bread soup), and ribollita.

Make French toast, bread and butter pudding or summer pudding.

Use in a strata (a savoury bake made with layers of milk, egg, cheese and bread).

Cut into croutons and bake, for topping soups or salads.

If you want to do more to tackle food waste, the food waste charity Feedback (feedbackglobal.org) is always keen to hear from volunteers who can help them rescue surplus fruit and veg from Kent’s farms and distribute it to those in need; sharewaste.com has an app which connects people who have food scraps with others who can use them; the toogoodtogo.co.uk app enables food retailers to sell you their soon-to-go-off produce; olioex.com connects neighbours with each other so that they can share food instead of binning it; and lovefoodhatewaste.com has plenty more food waste tips.

Squeezed-out citrus fruit Dice and freeze, then add to roasting tin when you’re roasting potatoes or veg.

Cheese rinds and scraps

Freeze in slivers to add to cocktails, iced tea or other drinks.

Freeze and add to soups, risottos or stews to give a deep, umami hit of savouriness.

Cut the peel into strips and simmer in sugar syrup until soft, then leave to dry.

Shave or grate into a white sauce for macaroni cheese, a gratin, tortilla or a soup.
