A PROPOSAL to honor STUART
SCOTT
HONORING A LEGEND: STUART SCOTT
Our priceless gem who was as cool as the other side of the pillow, Stuart Scott is beloved not only by Tar Heels, but by millions who tuned in to SportsCenter. His swag as a reporter was and is unmatched, and the passion brought to his career remains an inspiration to aspiring sportscasters today.
Today, we invite you to honor your friend and colleague by naming the Production Suite of the Woody Durham Media and Communications Center in honor of Stuart Scott. The Production Suite, including three control rooms and Jones Angell’s office, and the studio are state-of-the-art facilities where current Carolina students can gain hands-on experience - a place that can educate broadcasters of the future.
Stuart continues to live in our hearts - this opportunity will ensure his name is a Carolina Athletics mainstay for generations to come. Boo-yah!
“That’s what it’s all about right there. It’s on the floor. It’s on your shirt. It’s in your heart. That’s why we’re all here.”
-STUART SCOTT
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING FOR A NEW GENERATION: THE WOODY DURHAM MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS CENTER
The Woody Durham Media and Communications Center (MCC) is now the epicenter for media production for Carolina Athletics and is Carolina’s base for the ACC Network. It honors and celebrates the legacy of Tar Heel sports broadcasting legends like Woody Durham, Stuart Scott, Jim Lampley, Kenny Smith, and many more by training the next generation of hall-of-fame broadcasters.
Carolina Athletics is partnering with several schools and academic units on campus, including the Hussman School of Journalism and Media, Department of Communication Studies, and the Department of Exercise and Sport Science to provide academic credit, internships, and work opportunities as part of the core mission of the MCC. This provides hands-on experience for future broadcasters, producers, directors, designers, and more.
A key initiative for Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz is to have the MCC provide as many opportunities for students and academic units as possible. To that end, Carolina Athletics has met with more than 10 departments to develop curricular, programming, and production plans for the space.
WHAT EXPERIENCE WILL STUDENTS GAIN?
Students will be Production Assistants when working with Go Heels Productions (GHP), no matter which group they’re working in, including:
ACC NETWORK Students will be involved in all aspects of a broadcast. GHP will give a general overview of everything involved in a broadcast and from there students decide what they like and where they want to work. Students are not limited to just one area of concentration.
CREATIVE SERVICES Students will shoot, edit and design creative videos and graphics for teams on campus. They will be assigned a topic or get one of their ideas approved and be expected to complete that project in a timely manner.
GAME DAY PRODUCTION This is a hybrid of ACC Network and Creative Services. During the week students could help out with any of the following: editing videos, shooting video, making graphics, etc., which will run in the venue during the game. When the game is happening, students will work in a control room environment similar to an ACC Network room.
GRAPHIC DESIGN Students will help create and design graphics for teams on an as-needed basis.
SOCIAL MEDIA Students will help create and post social media items for teams on campus.
