From Vine to Glass

The Process of Making Wine By Angela McLaughlin ~ the journal

fter a long day, many of us just want to sit back and relax with a glass of wine. Being situated right in the middle of prime wine country means there are a lot of options for wine fanatics. We are lucky to live in a place and time where the selection is almost never-ending, and there is always something or someplace new to explore. Knowing the amount of time and dedication that goes into making a glass of wine may surprise some of us, and may make us appreciate it that much more. It all starts on the farm, where dedicated growers, or viticulturists, place their time and energy into producing a bountiful crop of healthy fruit. When harvest season rolls around, figuring out the perfect time to harvest is a sensitive process. Determining whether the grapes are ready to be picked depends upon a number of different factors, from ripeness to weather patterns. The winemaker will test the grapes, monitoring sugar and pH levels, as well as other things, and determine when

Friends and family members who made up the harvest crew at Escalona Vineyards picked 1,040 pounds of Petit Verdot in a record 1 ½ hours. the harvest should take place. Methods for collecting grapes from the vine differ from vineyard to vineyard. Some large operations choose to use mechanical harvesters, which can cover more ground at a faster rate than a group of hand-pickers. Many operations choose to use the traditional handpicking method for collection, where groups of people go into the

field with clippers and selectively remove the grapes from the vine. There are pros and cons to each option, and every vineyard has to make its own decision as to what will work best in each situation. Jennifer Lane, who owns the Pamo Valley Winery tasting room on Main Street, prefers to harvest by hand, and I was lucky enough to participate in one of the

harvests. With Ramona’s nearly perfect climate for grape growing, many of Ramona’s vineyards use these locally grown grapes. Lane says that though they grow many of their own estate varietals, they also acquire grapes from other local vineyards, making all of their grapes 100 percent locally sourced. Getting up close and personal with the hand-picking process was quite the experience. The day started early, before the heat of the sun could slow us down. We met at Escalona Vineyards to harvest a crop of Cabernet Franc grapes. Armed with buckets and clippers, we scoured our way through the vines, clipping off the luscious

bunches. No leaves were allowed in the buckets, and as little stem as possible was to be left attached to the grape clusters. We trimmed off all the “raisins” and any unripe grapes before dropping prime fruit into the buckets. “Harvesting by hand allows you to inspect the fruit you are picking and make wise decisions about what you want and what you will leave behind,” says Lane. “A machine would not be able to pick quality fruit — for example, if there was mold, unripe grapes or bird damage on a cluster — a machine would pick See The Process of Making Wine continued on page 7

Teens Promote Positive Principles

ustin Rodi, age 17, decided to turn a common word from a negative to a positive.

Taking the term “rekt,” which teens are already familiar with, Justin founded Ya’ll Get REKT in 2015, because he didn’t like the reputation his generation was creating for themselves, according to his parents, Cyndi and Joe Rodi. “He believes it is time to

raise the bar on their behavior — to think before they speak and act,” Cyndi said. “‘Get rekt’ is a gaming term that means to ‘get destroyed’ or ‘get owned,’” said Justin. “My thought was to turn this around into a positive acronym — REKT — meaning respect, empathy, kindness and thoughtfulness. “I knew that teenagers often had a negative

reputation for general misbehavior and a lack of respect and cordiality. Small things like ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ were rarely used, and I almost never saw a teenager hold the door open for someone. The lack of these simple, yet important, behaviors bothered me.” Rather than complain about it, he decided to take action by going into the community and talking to his peers. “I am currently meeting with local youth leaders and trying to set up opportunities to present Get REKT in front of their audiences,” he said. Kathryn Gunderson, Justin’s principal at Mountain Valley Academy, where he is a senior, invited him to give a presentation at the school last month and is helping him contact the Ramona High School Fuzion leader. Justin is holding discussions with his principal to adapt the program so it will be more accessible to seventhand eighth-grade students. “I gave shirts to a group of fellow students who I feel

exemplify the REKT values,” he said. “On my first day of discussing it on my campus, I heard one of them say that they had already found somebody who needed to ‘Get REKT.’ This was my original goal — to cause teens to be aware and notice negative behavior in themselves and others and begin to promote positive change.” In addition to the shirts,

Justin and his sister, McKenna, 16, a junior at Mountain Valley Academy, will soon have items such as wristbands for sale at www. yallgetrekt.com. “I just want to get the word out as much as possible,” he said. “I am going to use Instagram and Twitter to highlight teens who are doing positive things. My sister is gathering pictures to set up a queue. My friend, Parker, has been extremely helpful and has a lot of good business sense, so I brought him on as my business manager.” The concept of doing good and striving for excellence is a familiar one in the Rodi family. Older brother, Adam, was the salutatorian of his 2007 Mountain Valley Academy class. Justin is president of the school’s Associated Student Body, National

Honor Society and Peer Tutoring Club. McKenna is the ASB vice president, secretary of National Honor Society and the yearbook editor. “They’re very involved on campus,” Cyndi said. Justin credits family and friends for helping him get the program off the ground financially. One local family bought shirts for all of their schoolage children and made a donation. “I hope to be able to take Get REKT onto whatever college campus I end up on and forward the REKT philosophy among my fellow students there,” he said. “I plan to keep talking about this at every stage of my life. It is my belief that if we are going to continue to prosper as a free society, these values can’t be lost on my generation.” n

everything, whereas we would drop the unwanted fruit.” After a good morning of teamwork, we had completed our task and set out to weigh the product of our labors. We ended up collecting 1,232 pounds of grapes! “Harvesting by hand is a fun way to get people together and involved in the process, while at the same time getting the job done,” says Lane. The harvest is just the first step in the long process from vine to glass. Lane says that once the grapes are harvested, they are brought back to the winery where they are crushed and de-stemmed. The next day, yeast is added and the fermentation process begins, lasting between five and 10 days. “Once all the sugars have been converted to alcohol and the wine is determined ‘dry,’ it is ready to be pressed,” says Lane. “The pressing process is where you press the juice off the skins. The wine juice is then transferred by pump to settling drums, allowing all the sediment to sink to the bottom. The wine is allowed to settle anywhere from 10 to 14 days.” But wait, there’s even more to the process. “The wine is then racked off of the

sediment into oak barrels, where it will rest anywhere from one to three years. During the aging process, wine is often tested to make sure nothing bad is happening in the barrel. Wine is topped up about every few months, and sulfites are added to keep bacteria from occurring. The wine is also racked off every six to 10 months and transferred into a different barrel.” For Lane, making wine is a family endeavor. “While Pamo Valley Winery’s harvesting crews are out and about, picking grapes in the vineyards, my husband, Jason Lane, mother, Sharon Uran, and stepfather, Jeff Uran, are continuously hard at work behind the scenes at the winery, operating the weighing, crushing and pressing activities.” That’s a lot of time and dedication put into making wine! I, for one, will no longer take my glass of wine for granted. “There is a lot of blood, sweat and tears that go into making a bottle of wine,” says Lane. “I love that you can turn fruit from a vine that you personally planted by hand into a nice bottle of wine that is shared amongst friends and family.” n

The Artistry of Quilts on Display at Annual Show

Library Authors’ Day Welcomes Writers By Annette Williams ~ the journal

T

hose who love to read books and those who write them will come together at the fifth annual Authors’ Day at the Library, set for Oct. 22. Friends of the Ramona Library hosts the event and invites area authors to display, sell and sign their books; chat with the public; and network with other authors. This year’s guest speaker will be Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist and children’s book author Steve Breen. “Local authors are welcome and encouraged to participate,” said Chuck LeMenager, who co-chairs the event with Dr. Michael Barker.

“Participation at the previous four events has been strong.” He suggests that authors sign up early, as tables are limited. Author applications are available online at www. friendsoframonalibrary.org and in the Friends bookstore inside the library at 1275 Main St. Since 2012, Authors’ Day has presented informative programs that help published writers build their audience and offer insight to those who seek to be published one day. The event is free to the public. Doors will open at 10 a.m. at 1275 Main St., and the program will conclude with a publishing forum in the afternoon. Call LeMenager at 760-789-4177. n

‘Yarn Crawlers’ Trek to Backcountry By Ann Reilly Cole ~ the journal

Y

arn lovers traveled from near and far to visit three local establishments as part of the fourth annual San Diego Yarn Crawl.

“Crawlers” came to learn about new products, get discounts on featured yarns and patterns, meet indie yarn makers, pick up free patterns and notions, and enter to win special prizes. Two otherwise quiet local

yarn shops, where folks gather to work on projects and make friends, and a working alpaca ranch not normally open to the public became hubs of enthusiasm and energy, as a steady stream of excited guests passed through to get their event passports stamped, purchase supplies for projects or add some irresistible squishy yarn to their stashes. To participate, crafters

downloaded a map with details of the self-guided tour that listed all 12 destinations, which included eight shops, three alpaca farms and one mobile yarn truck. Divided into three regions — east, north and south — the event crisscrossed San Diego County. Each shop gave away a unique stitch marker. Those who visited all four sites in one region earned a small Swarovski crystal stitch marker, while those who made it to every destination on the

map were rewarded with a larger Swarovski crystal stitch marker and an entry into the grand prize drawing for $500 worth of merchandise. Each location offered something unique or exclusive to their shop, making it worth the trip to get to know the different shops, their owners and the products they offer. At Ramona Country Yarn Store on Main Street in Ramona, owner Connie Phillips celebrated her shop’s

Ramona Chamber of Commerce Board Of Director Nominees 2016

The Ramona Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has five open seats available for 2017. Paul Zawilenski, Amber Ramirez, Eric Vellone, Kathleen

Brenda Berry

It is with great enthusiasm that I respectfully run for a position serving the Ramona Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. The Ramona Chamber of Commerce has a long history of involvement with our community and the services it provides. My interest in serving on the Board of Directors stems from my passion and history of dedication to people in the hospitality industry. I strongly believe in promoting and assisting local business. I have over 15 years of experience working in the hospitality sector promoting and advising, local marketing, building and supporting my community. I have experience in bridging businesses and creating profitable relationships in Ramona. I want to be a voice for the community. I believe in supporting and encouraging business growth. Those that have worked with me over the years can attest to both my dedication and involvement in Ramona. Through my experiences of owning two local businesses I have gained insight and a deep understanding of the many challenges and opportunities that Ramona offers. Moreover, I believe that in order for our business owners to remain relevant and vital, they must be publically engaged so that they are represented and supported. We have to effectively tell the stories of the many people we serve in so many ways that contribute to the quality of life in Ramona. If elected to the Ramona Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, I promise to bring a deep commitment to contributing to our small country town.

Kathleen Cole

When you are young and just starting out in life, it is difficult to know where you might want to put down roots and start a family. I was blessed in my life when I discovered a lovely, quaint little town full of friendly, heartwarming people. It was a town where people had room to breathe, and children could experience “country life” in the heart

18 Ramona Home Journal

Cole, Deborah Reaza, Wayne Miller, Karen Domnitz, Connie Phillips, Penny Hale and Brenda Berry are among the 10 nominees who are running to fill

of San Diego. I knew I had found my home. I have lived in Ramona for over 35 years and I can’t imagine anywhere else I would want to call home (well, perhaps a tropical paradise) but that’s for later down the road. My goal as a Chamber director is to do all I can for Ramona’s small business owners in assisting them in making their businesses thrive. Ramona is now a “destination” on the map, not a drive thru town on the way to somewhere else. Wine, equine, antiquing, hiking and dining have become some of our most popular signature attractions. For over 30 years, my husband Tom Cole, owner of Jewelry World and Loan, and I have worked diligently to keep our small business thriving. We have strived to provide our Ramona customers with the best service we can. I am grateful for all the town has done for us and feel it is important to try to give back to this community in the best way I can. This is why I am running for a seat on the Ramona Chamber of Commerce board of directors. There are many organizations in Ramona I could choose to be involved in. I choose the Ramona Chamber of Commerce because they are there for small town business owners like us. I have seen firsthand the endless hours and commitment these volunteers put into our town. They care as much as I do about keeping the integrity of Ramona and helping it become the best it can be. “You can’t complain if you are not in the game. Be involved if you want it solved.”

Karen Domnitz

Passion to see our community be everything that it can be is how I would describe my commitment. I have greatly enjoyed being a part of the Ramona Chamber Ambassadors and feel that I can carry the participation and energy that I’ve had with the Ambassadors into a Ramona Chamber Director position. The energy and direction in which the Ramona Chamber has been moving has been exciting and I’m eager to participate in solidifying the events that the Chamber does each year into events that are on people’s calendars as, ‘don’t miss’, events! I love that the Community Calendar is becoming more known to all Ramona and I want to help spread the word as to what a great tool this is, so that we can avoid too

many overlaps in events and maximize each event’s potential participation. Also very excited to see how the Ramona Chamber App works and interacts. Being a Realtor in Ramona is something I get a lot of satisfaction from. The majority of that satisfaction comes from the interaction I get to have with people. Having worked with special needs kids here in Ramona I have a strong relationship with many teachers and staff of the school district. I volunteer as art instructor for the 2nd graders of Hanson Elementary and only wish there was enough time for all the schools. I deliver supplies and treats to all 9 of RUSD schools each month. And I donate to the PTA or FORUS with each property I close. This is a little about me, a Ramonan for 24+ years and counting. Think I’ll be staying. Thanks for your consideration.

Penny Hale

I’m one of those rare San Diego natives. Life led our family to Ramona 18 years ago. I can’t imagine living anywhere else, life “down the hill” seems so hectic and crowded! My career started out as a legal secretary, which evolved over the years (before kids) to doing all sorts of office management tasks, including dabbling in some bookkeeping. After my part-time bookkeeping/ office manager position with a contractor in Julian ended in 2009, my brother, a QuickBooks ProAdvisor support person with Intuit, suggested I start my own business, as there are many businesses out there in need of my help. That sounded like a great idea, so I got certified as a ProAdvisor and started my bookkeeping and payroll business a little later in 2009. One of my first adventures was joining the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, where I was invited to get involved as an Ambassador. It’s a role I’ve enjoyed being involved with over these past 7 years. I’ve watched our little group of Ambassadors change over the years, and have made some great friends in the process. I enjoy helping out with the Chamber’s mixers, fairs and various events, and jumping in to lend a hand for other projects as needed. I believe my bookkeeping experience has given me a great understanding of the unique needs of small businesses here in Ramona. More and more of my bookkeeping

and payroll clients are within the local area. I have enjoyed working with the Ambassador team, and feel my skills could be well-utilized while serving as a member of the Board of Directors. I would appreciate your vote of confidence.

Wayne Miller

My wife and I moved to Ramona in 1997. I am a native San Diegan that grew up in the Mt. Helix area. I own Miller Telcom Services which has been in business since 1988. We joined the Ramona Chamber in 1997. Our company services several companies in Ramona with their Telecommunication needs, including the Ramona Chamber of Commerce. I also own, Miller Off-Road Products, which specializes in products & accessories for Jeeps. I have been involved in the sport of OffRoading for most of my adult life donating countless hours to help in the fight to keep public lands open for public recreation. I was the event Chairman for OffRoad for Hope for 5 years. Monies raised were donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. We raised over four hundred thousand dollars to donate to MDA. For the last several years I have been involved in the Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari as the prize and vendor chairman. I was the TDS Sweepstakes Jeep Chairman for giving away a 2012 Jeep that Chrysler donated to TDS to help raise monies to keep public lands open for recreational use. I feel that with my many years of owning businesses along with the event organization skills that I have acquired over the years, I would be a great asset to the Ramona Chamber of Commerce.

Connie Phillips

My name is Connie Phillips, and my husband, Todd, and I opened Ramona Country Yarn Store in 2014. I was a banker for twenty years, and Todd has worked for Intuit for 28 years making Turbo Tax. We were going to open a tax business when we moved to Ramona in 2012, but there are several so decided to create a

business Ramona didn’t have. Knitting and crocheting since I was eight, so my business background and practical experience allow me to do something I love! We have four children, three grown and one a freshman at RHS — our freshman son is #5 on the Frosh football team for the Bulldogs! We are very grateful to have our store on Main Street and enjoy being a part of the community of Ramona. We are building a strong group of knitters and crocheters who regularly frequent our “Open Knit/Crochet” times on Thursday nights and Saturdays, adding to our community feel. For the last year, I have served on the Economic Development Committee and the work being done to improve the economy of our small town is superb. The Board is committed to generate new business as well as keeping our current merchants strong and viable so joining the Board will allow me to in this area as well. Using my time wisely is important to me, and I cannot think of a better way to use it than being a part of the Chamber’s work myself. Thank you, so much, for this opportunity, and I look forward to serving Ramona as a Chamber Director!

Amber Ramirez

At the age of 3, I moved to Ramona with my family. Growing up in a small town like Ramona, I have been able to watch it grow into what it has become today! I received my degree in Business Management from Mt. San Jacinto College. I am the proud owner of Farmers Insurance Agency/Amber Ramirez Insurance Agency, Inc. located 603 Main St. This agency has been family owned for the past 45 years at the same location. I hold several different insurance licenses including Fire and Casualty, Life, and Variable Contracts. Health and Life Insurance is not normally thought of when I mention Farmers Insurance, but that is why I started my brokerage under Amber Ramirez Insurance Agency, Inc. We offer advice and assistance with most of the top health insurance companies. Covered CA, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Health Net, Kaiser, Sharp just to name a few. My agency consists of a team of licensed customer service representatives to help with your insurance needs. I have been on the Board of Directors for the Ramona Chamber October 6, 2016

of Commerce for the past 9 years. I am an active Rotarian and I enjoy helping with events such as Music Fest, July 4 Fireworks, Student of the Month, and Flags on Main Street (just to name a few). I am also secretary on the board for the Ramona Senior Center, and a proud local sponsor of many community events. I am thankful for the opportunity that I had growing up in this family community. By being active and staying involved, we can make this community a better place for all of us to live in!

I am currently participating in the Ambassador program where we support and promote all Chamber activities. When I learned of the need for additional ABC certified Ambassadors, I took the class on my own to provide more service at Chamber events. It is my desire to give back to the Community by serving on the Board of the Ramona Chamber. I bring a lifetime of management experience coupled with good values and ethics. Working with the Board to further their agenda for making Ramona and the Back Country recognized, I feel I would be an asset helping to formulate and implement new ideas.

fortunate enough to be a part of this past year’s Ramona Country Fair, broadcast live from the Chamber property for Thursday night Cruise Nights; and all the great events put on by our friends at Country Wine & Spirits. Doing the live events has brought more and more notoriety to Ramona Town Radio and we certainly appreciate all the opportunities. I’d like to be a board member because after becoming a business member, I’ve made some really great friends. I see how Ramona Chamber of Commerce helps people; myself included. I want to be a bigger part of that; and help business grow in Ramona.

continue its growth as an inclusive, proactive resource to help our community and businesses prosper. I have over 25 years board experience serving organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County, Boys & Girls Club and various chambers of commerce. I will bring that leadership experience & skills to the Ramona Chamber. n

I have a 37 year history working in management in the Healthcare industry as a Registered Dietitian, after earning my Bachelor of Science degree in Foods & Nutrition from Cal State LosAngeles. I held positions as Food Service Director in hospitals for 27 years and 10 years as a General Manager for Food Service in Senior Living. During my tenure I have been responsible for multi-million $ budgets, developing menus, catering, and Patient/ Resident satisfaction; while leading departments with as many 40+ employees. I have also worked in a family Real Estate Appraisal business with my husband. I have been active in my Church for over 25 years, serving on the Pastoral Council and other volunteer roles. Since moving to Ramona I danced with the Ramona Rocketts, raising money for the Town Hall renovation. Recently my husband and I have started a small business and subsequently have joined the Ramona Chamber of Commerce.

I moved to Ramona with my parents in 1985, starting the 3rd grade at James Dukes Elementary. I have never moved out of Ramona since then. I have been a single father to three children most of my parenting life, and currently reside in the San Diego Country Estates. I spent 15 years in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry (HVAC). I started off as a delivery driver for a wholesale distributor to become (at the age of 30), one of the youngest and most highly trained service managers for a contractor in the industry. After my career in the HVAC industry, I went back to my musical roots. Due to other internet radio stations that I created and ran successfully, I decided to start one for our community of Ramona and called it “Ramona Town Radio.” It’s internet radio for Ramona, and news for our community. As my first year on the Chamber board comes to a close, it has been a true pleasure and an honor to serve our community and I would like to continue to do so with your support. During the past year I worked as co-chair on the Economic Development Committee. I also joined, supported and raised funds for the Scholarship Program. This year I established the 1st Annual Ramona Motorcycle Rally Motorcycle show during the Ramona Fair. The event was successful by attracting custom motorcycle entries from all over San Diego County and in bringing attention to Ramona through extensive media exposure. Many riders who would normally ride through our town stopped to see the show and enjoy the Fair. My goal is to continue to grow the event to showcase Ramona. All funds raised went to the Chamber Scholarship

Eco-conscious Winemaker Recognized by Senator Anderson By Kelsey Meksto

W

ine enthusiasts are taking their love of wine to an entirely new level in Ramona. Susanne Sapier, owner of Vineyard Grant James, spreads her passion of wine and her knowledge of water-wise farming to local residents as well as visitors. Sapier’s love for wine and for her community was the inspiration behind her idea of creating a destination where people from all over could come together and enjoy

something they all have in common. At an educational Meet the Winemaker Weekend event earlier this year, Sapier shared her drive to create drought-tolerant vineyards in the Ramona community. “If we could find a way and find a crop in San Diego that took no water, or barely any water, that would be just huge,” she said. She added that the reaction of the Ramona community has been very positive. “I am looking for a varietal that we could dry-farm, meaning no irrigation

at all,” she said. “I am also looking for one that is pest- and disease-resistant, works well in our soil and climate, and isn’t prone to powdery mildew. “It also needs to be a varietal that customers like to drink — the holy grail of grapes, if you will.” Sapier cares for education and for her community. She donated a portion of her weekend sales to support Ramona High School’s graduation events. “I think it is important for our next generation of Ramonans to have a fun, safe send-off,” she said. For being an excellent contributor to the winemaker event and for being an outstanding member of the community, Sapier was presented a Certificate of Recognition from State Senator Joel Anderson. “It is an honor to recognize Susanne’s efforts for strengthening her community through what she loves to do,” Anderson said. “She is

Pick a Pumpkin Project By Ann Reilly Cole ~ the journal

W

hether you pick out your pumpkins from the grocery aisle of your favorite store, the fields of a local farm or the garden right in your own backyard, there are plenty of reasons to stock up on the hearty and abundant fruit during the fall harvest season, and plenty of ways to use and enjoy them once you do. Drill it The simple jack-o’-lantern with its triangle shaped eyes and nose and its toothless grin, lit from within by a candle — is an easy choice to set on the porch step to welcome trick-ortreaters. A grouping of them in different sizes and shapes can make a bold impression. Put your paring knife away, though. In less time than it takes to carve and with a little

imagination, your candlelit squash can be a starry constellation or lacy luminaria. Simply mark your pattern and, using a power drill with different-sized bits, drill holes where you want the light to shine through. Decorate it Carefully decorating the pumpkin’s exterior will provide for a second use in cooking or baking. Markers and nontoxic paints may be used to draw faces or intricate designs, depending on the theme you choose. Use patterned duct tape to accentuate or contrast the natural shape of the pumpkin, or completely reinvent it. Glue felt pieces, decorative paper or ribbon to create an infinite variety of designs. Decorate with it With pumpkins available in all

sorts of shapes, sizes and colors, a collection of unadorned pumpkins can make an entryway more welcoming or grace an elegant table as a centerpiece that can easily take your seasonal décor to Thanksgiving and beyond. Pile them randomly for that just-harvested feeling of abundance. Place them in groups of three or more each on their own pretty serving dish, some high and some low, to create visual interest. A row of samesized pumpkins is simply elegant. Place pine cones, artfully arranged flowers or tall candles between them to change the style. Express it Tell your family story with pumpkins. Draw or glue a portrait of each person in the family and something unique to them on a pumpkin that matches their size relative to other family members — don’t forget your pets! Sports fans can use team colors and symbols to decorate their pumpkins. Art lovers can make an exhibit of pumpkins that look like their favorite paintings. Got something to say? Use poetry or prose to decorate it. Eat it Sweet or savory, first course to last, chopped, mashed, pureed, boiled, steamed, baked, roasted or grilled,

pumpkins may be the most versatile fruit that comes from the earth. From the seeds to the skin, every part can be made into something yummy to eat. An Internet search will offer enough recipes to see you through pumpkin season, and beyond. Return it The gift that keeps giving, a jacko’-lantern past its prime can be used to make a bird feeder. Line it with newspaper to keep the birdseed from falling out, then poke dowels or thin branches through it, string it up and fill it with seed. Or, make a planter by filling it with potting soil and a plant for your garden. As it decomposes, it will nourish the new plant. Smash it Murder mystery, action-packed adventure, comedy or historical drama, it’s fun to make a video of the destruction or disappearance of your pumpkin, styling it after a favorite movie or TV show or an original idea of your own. “America’s Funniest Home Videos” loves to show creative ways people smash their pumpkins. Plant it If you didn’t already eat all of the pumpkin seeds, dry them out and save them to plant next spring, so you can try all the pumpkin ideas you didn’t get to this year. n
