Basketball Team

Our winning team was formed this year, 2023 Our student-athletes, basketball lovers said “yes” to being the representatives of Ramey Job Corps in sports. These guys practiced during their free time for hours with their coaches Guillermo Valentín and Benito Crespo. Their efforts have already paid off! Recently they went to represent the center at a school in Hormigueros and were victorious!

We are very proud of our team and congratulate them on their performance.

State Elections Commission

The State Elections Commission visited the center and gave a talk to the students about the electoral process. Students practiced how to vote and how to use the reading machines used in general elections.

In addition, students interested in obtaining their electoral card had the opportunity to do so. More than 50 youth have registered and are ready to exercise their right to vote.

For Ramey Job Corps it is important that our students are educated about these processes and that they are instructed on how to obtain their registration without having to leave the center.

RAMEY JOB CORPS

Our youth participated in the First Volleyball Carnival 3 on 3 mixed teams. The teams were made up of residential and non-residential students.

We congratulate Anthony Cordero, Ketziel Mercado and Jomar Crespo, members of the winning team.

The Deputy Assistant Secretary, Employment and Training Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, Lenita Jacob - Simmons visited Puerto Rico and on this occasion, Arecibo Job Corps was the venue to guide a select group of employers on the Apprenticeship Program of the Federal Department of Labor. In addition , the Secretary of Labor of PR, Gabriel Maldonado, addressed those present to urge them to participate in this initiative.

The Ramey Job Corps Administration congratulates the Security Officers during the week recognizing their profession, April 2-8.

Highlights…

The first 2023 meeting of the Construction Workforce Council was held, achieving the participation of local employers who signed collaboration agreements with Ramey Job Corps and are interested in hiring our students.

A job fair was held in Center with the New Hampshire-based General Electric Aerospace Company. They interviewed 5 students interested in being hired by the company.

The signing of 4 collaboration agreements with different companies was achieved to offer employment to our students. The signature of three companies is expected.

A meeting was held with LUFTHANSA Technik

PR to establish a collaboration agreement for recruitment and internships in the company. In addition, a job fair is being coordinated for the month of June

Mechanics Workshop for Women

We thank Mrs. Iliana Natal, Case Evaluator who coordinated a mechanics workshop for the female students. On this occasion, the professor of the automotive mechanics workshop, Jose Suarez, was guiding them on how to change a tire on a car.

Job Corps works to ensure that students acquire all the skills necessary to achieve independent living. We thank the Residential Life Department for this excellent initiative.

Advanced Solar Trade Awards Ceremony

During the month of March, Ramey Job Corps held a recognition ceremony for students from the Advanced Solar Panel Workshop who successfully completed their technical career. These youths have shown discipline and commitment since they joined the program. Executives from LUMA Energy, MELPRO Group, Maximo Solar and Windmar Home, all Puerto Rican companies dedicated to the sale and installation of renewable energy who are willing to offer students a job opportunity, were invited for the occasion. We congratulate the students and wish them the best of success in their professional career.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Students from the Security CTT served as ushers at a Puerto Rico Police activity held at the Aguadilla Marriot Hotel to benefit the “Mi Gran Sueño” Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides services to young people with intellectual disabilities.

Their work was recognized by the Puerto Rico Police Commissioner, Coronel Antonio Lopez.

An Important MOU: Colorado Department of Corrections

This recently signed Memorandum of Understanding effective April 2024 represents a great opportunity for Ramey Job Corps students. In addition to working in an area related to their vocational preparation, these students receive a recruitment bonus of $15,000.00 and an annual income of over $56,000.00 per year in addition to expenses of relocation for the first three months.

The effort made to achieve this important agreement has been teamwork between the staff of the Department of Correction, Professors Wilfredo Velez and James Acevedo, the manager of the vocational area, Mr. Edward Olivo, counselors and all Ramey Job Corps career transition personnel (CTS). Thanks to their commitment, these youth have managed to be recruited and are on their way to successful careers

So far 15 graduates are already working in Colorado and two other young women will start academy at the beginning of May 2023. We hope that many more will be able to enter the Academy during this year.

CAREERS BEGIN HERE!

Excursion to the Botanical Garden

Students from the Special Education program participated in an excursion to the Botanical Garden of Caguas, PR. The students enjoyed an enriching experience that allowed them to learn and explore the history of the old San Jose mill and the sugar industry in Caguas, the ecology of the Turabo Valley, the cultural and ecological importance of trees, Taino history, agriculture , as well as other aspects of Puerto Rican rural life of yesteryear.

We thank Mrs. Jessica Cruz, Mrs. Marisol Hernandez and Prof. Osvaldo Rosado for this initiative.

April 22: Earth Day

After three years, the hurricane fighter plane returned to Puerto Rico. This plane is an important instrument when it comes to determining the trajectory, speed and strength of hurricanes.

Around 25,000 people from all over the island participated in this educational activity. The participants and students from the center who attended had the opportunity to see the plane, share with the crew, meteorologists and scientists, in addition to the first responders from the municipalities and of course from other agencies such as Job Corps who were with admissions counselors orienting the visitors.

Without a doubt, a different activity to celebrate Earth Day.

On March 14, 2023, we had on center a Ping Pong Tournament with fifteen students participating The Tournament champion was Jan C. Correa and runner-up Loys L. Crespo. Congratulations Guys!

In Autism Awareness Month, activities were carried out in support of functional diversity.

At the center we received a visit from Brandon Fred, who was not limited by his diagnosis and today is a librarian. The young man offered a talk to our students about the indicators of autism and his life story.

In addition, the student Angel Rivera donated his time and talent as a professional clown to, with the students Swinda Perez and Sofia Soler and the Disability Coordinators, read stories to the special education students of the Esther Feliciano Mendoza school in Aguadilla.
