Jackspeak is a comprehensive reference guide to the humorous and colourful slang of the Senior Service, explaining in layman's termsthe otherwise cryptic everyday language of the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines and the Fleet Air Arm. Featuring more than 4,000 alphabetical entries, it was compiled by an ex-RM surgeon who spent 24 years in theservice. With useful cross-references and examples of common usagethroughout, along with excellent illustrations by Tugg, the cartoonistfrom service newspaper Navy News, it is the essential book forcurrent and ex-Navy personnel and their families, or anyone interested in the modern armed forces. Unlike the civilian nicknames we get labelled with a military nickname has greater significance, it holds a value only fully comprehended by our contemporaries. The Andrew, Jack & Jenny, focuses primarily on the names given to each skin and essence the moment they became a matelot. Royal Naval nicknames are not chosen by the recipient, they are bestowed, irrevocably, by custom and tradition. Yet, each sailor soon becomes attached to their 'new' name, which grows into a large part of their identity, even influencing their character. It soon becomes the name which is spoken with pride in answer to the question "Who are you?"

Q ships came in all shapes and sizes - coastal steamer, trawler, barque, yacht or schooner - but all had to look harmless in order to lure their opponents to the surface and encourage them to attack. Those who served on Q ships had to accept their U-boat opponents would be able to strike first. Q ship captains kept ready a 'panic crew', which was trained to act out an elaborate evacuation to convince the Uboat commander that the ship was being abandoned by its crew. The Q ship captain would remain behind with a handful of other crewmen manning the guns, which remained hidden until the most

opportune time to unmask and engage the U-boat.

Great Britain never built a vessel as fast or as deadly as the E-boats, instead, fielding many types of MTB and motor gunboats. After a slow start, the Royal Navy helped by construction in the USA, Canada and India, built an extraordinary catalogue of excellent small boats, supported by larger vessels which gave serious firepower and, using the characteristics of each boat to maximum effect, fielded mixed formations supported by destroyers or powerful gun equipped LCTs. The Pussers Cook Book has been revised and updated, this is the 2019 edition. The Pussers Cook Book contains the most popular and loved traditional dishes from the Royal Navy’s Galleys. Woven between the recipes are facts and tidbits about the food, the cooks and general life aboard ship. Along with the recipes, this book aims to preserve a segment of British history that is fading, all too quickly, into the grey sea-mists of oblivion.

Here is an extraordinary, individual and unique book. It is one which I know holds many memories for us as members of Tigers ships company, the sailors, matelots, oppo’s who sailed on her, but this is also a book which allows us to share so many of our memories with the ones we love and to pass them on to our children, grandchildren and future generations.

This is a true heritage book.

The 21st century promises to be one of huge uncertainties and challenges for the senior service. Nick Childs looks at the changing strategic environment (including economic difficulties and the growth of other navies such as China and India). He asks what Britain's role in the world could or should be - is she still interventionist? If so, should our forces be designed purely to work with US, UN or Western European forces? What are the options for a naval strategy? The author considers what kind of navy would be needed to support such options. What kind of ships are needed and how many? What of aircraft carriers and the nuclear option? What are the technological developments affecting current and future warship design projects? Is the new Type 45 destroyer what is needed and worth the cost? This new paperback edition has been revised and updated to take into account the most recent developments and government defence decisions
