Parshat Shemini

Summary
This week’s parasha begins after the seven days during which the Kohanim practiced their new jobs in the Mishkan. On the eighth day, hayom ha-shemini, Aharon and his sons acted as Kohanim without Moshe’s help. After Aharon gave a korban, he raised his hands towards Bnei Yisrael and blessed them. Bnei Yisrael saw Hashem’s presence resting in the Mishkan and they were overjoyed.
In this week’s parasha Hashem also teaches us the rules about which animals are kosher:
1.Land mammals are kosher if they have split hooves and chew their cud (chew their food more than once).
2.Fish are kosher if they have both fins and scales
3.While there are no markings of kosher birds, Hashem lists the birds that are not kosher.
4.Insects are only kosher if they are one of the four types of grasshoppers listed in the parasha
Discussion: Think of an animal. Is it kosher? How do you know?
