School of Architecture

Second Year Spring 2024 Studio Instructor: Richard Molina

The main concept of this school of architecture tower is to differentiate between pragmatic and non-pragmatic spaces by following a distinct parti: a uniform element being enveloped by a nonuniform element. Initially using a series of clusters to derive the form of the structure, it transformed into a diagram following angles at 15 degree increments. The uniform, pragmatic component houses the more static spaces, such as offices, classrooms, and library archives—the non-pragmatic houses the studio spaces, open discussion spaces, and lounges. By situating these spaces, this project fosters an environment conducive to creative exploration, collaboration, and innovation, redefining the conventional boundaries of architectural pedagogy and practice. Changes in ceiling heights and overhead beams create a soft boundary between pragmatic and nonpragmatic, following the parti. While the form allows it to differentiate between the 2 forms, the structure also incorporates 2 facade elements. The Uniform component uses situ concrete to form a triangulated pattern in the form of a diagrid, whereas the latter, utilizes a double-skin glass system. This triangulated pattern is carried over the interior elements such as rails on overlooks, as well as a lighting frame for the ceilings. The plinth acts in unison with a rooftop deck, carrying over the diagrid system onto its form.

02 Scientist Retreat Center

Third Year Fall 2024 Studio Instructor: Nicholas Hopson

This project utilizes the concept of biomimicry to engage with the site. It takes inspiration from the concept of a geode, defining boundaries of the exterior and interior. Conceptually, it mimics the process of a geode breaking in half, with some crystal particles falling out. The retreat center is separated into three components. The first houses public spaces, including laboratories, offices, and a machine room. The second contains more residential parts, including the various bedrooms for the scientists, the dayroom, the kitchen, and personal storage. The third and final component is the outdoor amphitheater. This represents the portion of the “crystal” that broke off and fell. To exemplify this, a glass bridge is also implemented between the 2 main masses. The facade features glass fiber-reinforced concrete panels to mimic that of a stone, and is derived from the case study, “The Chapel of Sound, designed by Open Architecture.” The 2 main components in the parti of this concept are the “shell” and the “crystal”. The Shell, as mentioned, is gfrc, and the crystal component is glass. Another instance of biomimicry seeks inspiration from natural pyrite crystal cubes on matrices. This concept is used to incorporate aperture as skylights into the spaces. In order to get the sectional qualities of this project, the structural framing predominantly uses HSS circular steel tubes. This allows for the structure to follow the form of the structure.

03 Community Cultural Center

First Year Spring 2023 Studio

The key idea behind this community center design is to create a series of protected and secluded spaces throughout the site, by implementing a hierarchy of vertical planes. The building structure is composed of 2 major elements, glass and rammed earth. The rammed earth walls are considered to be the primary component that is curved to aid in the direction of circulation within the building. They are placed in a staggering manner allowing openings in between each plane. Sandwiched in between these openings in the rammed walls are the secondary vertical planes, which include glass. In section, the rammed earth walls are curved in a manner that they either converge or diverge height-wise, creating an angle with the ground. The building is separated into two pieces based on the programs held within each piece. In the site, these spaces are surrounded by 8-10 foot rammed earth walls, with concrete walls intersecting the partitions. This creates a staggering dynamic creating tucked-in spaces of privacy. These spaces are lower in elevation and dug in creating more seclusion. This language corresponds to the planters placed around the site as well. The proposed community center is designed to create a series of protected spaces for users to come together, share their experiences, and engage in meaningful discussions.

03 Community Arts Center

Second Year Fall 2023 Studio Instructor: Jeehye Kim

The main idea behind this community arts center is to explore the concept of “to drop.” This is implemented by a volumetric system with enclosed volumes, housing the main activity spaces dropping into a central atrium. These volumes are tilted at a 5-degree angle, creating a sloped path where users can experience the drop spatially. These spaces drop into areas of recess, which are levels where users can reset their viewing experience. From each of these points, it provides a view of the floors beneath it, as well as the main sculptural exhibit. While the galleries themselves, rely on artificial lighting, the skylight above the atrium creates a natural light source that pulls the users from the art galleries into the areas of recess which then provides a view of dropping. The circulation is done such that it travels in and out of these volumes with the grain of the slopes. with glazing placed to direct the path of travel.
