Einleitung

Im Informationszeitalter „Information Age“ wird unser Alltag und Gegenwart nicht nur von Informationen geprägt und überflutet, sondern auch von Weissagungen, Wertungen und Fehlprognosen. Die große Fülle von Informationen wird durch Algorithmen strukturiert und bestimmt.

In seiner Arbeit „Die Gedanken sind frei“ spiegelt der Künstler Ralph Tepel nicht nur die Digitalisierung der Welt und ihre Auswirkungen mit einem kritischen Blick. Ihm gelingt es, die Betrachter mit seinen Bildern in einen Dialog zu bringen, so dass sie der Zweifel überkommt, wie frei sie tatsächlich sind. So stellt sich vor allem die entscheidende Frage: „Sind unsere Gedanken überhaupt noch so frei, wie wir gemein hin glauben? Mit „No liberty Island“ wird eine weitere Botschaft des Künstlers sichtbar. Die Grenzen der Freiheit sind möglicherweise bereits erreicht. Mit Facebook, Twitter und weiteren Netzwerken beliefern wir selbst tagtäglich die Algorithmen für die Marketinginstitutionen, die dann in Folge unser Leben mitbestimmen, sogar die „unabhängige“ Justitia scheint gefangen zu sein. Die Freiheit als Grundwert der Demokratie ist zweifellos von unserem menschlichen und technischen Beiwerk bedroht wie nie zuvor.

Wer eine geordnete, gewohnt ästhetische Ausstellungskonzeption mit Bildern von Ralph Tepel

erwartet, wird enttäuscht sein. In vielen seiner bisherigen Ausstellungen „Die Gedanken sind frei“; „myth games - the encounter“, etc. gelang es dem Künstler immer wieder den Betrachtern Denkanstöße zu geben, assoziativ und non-linear.

Sind die Bilder von Ralph Tepel eine Kampfansage an die Gegenwart? Ist die Masse der Menschen in der Ohnmacht des „postfaktischen Zeitalters“ gefangen? Sind wir nur noch von Oberflächlichkeit bestimmt?

Der Künstler fängt in seinen Bildern und Installationen die Zeit ein, so dass die Betrachter seiner Werke sich einer tiefgründigen, intellektuellen Betrachtungsweise nicht entziehen können. „Wer nicht denken will, fliegt raus.“ Dieser Satz von Joseph Beuys hängt im Atelier des Künstlers Ralph Tepel.

In seinem Werk sind die Hauptthemen der Gegenwart wie Digitalisierung, Globalisierung, Ökonomisierung und Verlust von Freiheit präsent.

Der Künstler selbst verleiht mit seiner großen Leidenschaft diesen Themen der Gegenwart mit alten mythischen Symbolen in der Kunst neuen Ausdruck und neue Kraft. Hierbei sind den Farben und Formen keine Grenzen gesetzt, Regeln werden gezielt gebrochen. Die Bilder sind eindeutig das Produkt eines Denkers, der die Geschehnisse

seiner Zeit in die Kunst aufnimmt.

Die ständige Konfrontation mit Medien, Zeitgeschichte, Krieg und Flucht prägen die Bilder. Figuren entstehen und gehen in Interaktion mit sich selbst und bei tieferer Auseinandersetzung mit den Bildern auch mit dem Betrachter.

Mit „trust me“ entlarvt Ralph Tepel die ambivalente Beziehung zwischen Macht, Geld und Welt.

Geld hat sich bereits zu einem Symbol des Schattens und des Todes verwandelt und der Mensch befindet sich mittendrin. Er ist in seiner Existenz bedroht. Die Umwandlung von George Washington in einen Totenschädel zeigt die Veränderung des Geldes zu einer Personalisierung des Todes und zugleich die Vergötterung der Macht des Geldes.

Die Finanzwelt selbst ist ein moderner Mythos unserer Zeit und findet in der Kunst von Ralph Tepel eine neue kritische Ausdrucksform. Aus einem Zusammenspiel von Symbolen, Farben und Formen bekommen die Themen neue Bedeutung.

Ralph Tepel greift politische Themen mit viel Humor auf. Alle großen Themen der Gegenwart finden sich in seinen Arbeiten mit wiederkehrenden Motiven aus der Welt der Mythen und Symbole.

Im Monumentalwerk (5,40 Meter x 1,60 Meter) „Flawless Democracy 2015“ enthüllt und entlarvt

der Künstler zugleich mehrere Bereiche der Gesellschaft in ihren Zusammenhängen. Kernstück dieses Bildes ist die Achse der Waage in der Hand der Justitia, in einem Gewand, das in seinen Streifen und im Blauton bewusst die Kleidung von Häftlingen in Konzentrationslagern aufgreift. Sie ist nicht nur blind, sondern scheint somit eine Gefangene in einem größeren Sinn zu sein.

Vor mehr als 30 Jahren hat er an ganz anderen Stationen in seiner Kunst begonnen, sich in intensiver Zusammenarbeit mit Prof. Engling weiterentwickelt und als Assistent bei seinem Künstlerfreund und Meister Helmut Tollmann neuen technischen Prozessen in der Kunst gewidmet. Ralph Tepel gehört zu den Künstlern unserer Zeit, dem es gelingt die Entwicklungen, die Auswirkungen, insbesondere die Wechselwirkungen unseres Zeitalters zwischen Digitalisierung, Freiheit, Macht und Demokratie in Kunst mit neuen Darstellungsformen zu reflektieren. Ralph Tepel hat eine Dialogform gefunden, seine künstlerische Kreativität und politischen Diskurs in den Figuren seiner Bilder zu verkörpern.

rt: „As Joseph Beuys once stated: “before we know, what to do, we have to know, what we think.” This stage needs some time. Because this knowledge about what we think must be natural, self-evident and so deeply understood, that it can flow out without rethinking. Since I’m playing a game, (the viewers will do in their own way getting in contact with the canvas), the rules, the shapes, the colours, the symbols are a repertoire of characters and symbols, instructions and so on.

It’s an intentional-dynamic process. During this process sequence I do not think about rules and colours and shapes and techniques, it’s all natural and self-evident, just flowing. The technical aspects of the work must be understood long before I start on a single piece. The time I put in depends on different parameters for every artwork. rt: „A friend asked me lately: Do these art-pieces make to great demands on the viewer? They need “to take active part to the construction of the sense” as you traced it. Franz Ackermann called his artworks “mental maps”, I call it a “game of imagery”, it’s not the same but anyway you need characters, instructions, shapes, colours, rules to setup the map and the game.

Anyone using the map, has to make his own way with it, anyone playing the game is playing his own “reading”, “investigation” what’s in the

artwork and replenishing it with his own connotations. Art is not a container or a box the artist put a message in, the viewer has to receive and open. If there would be a clear and easy message, the artist could tell it or write it down in a few words, no artwork to paint. An artwork is different. The artist can’t force the viewer to follow a prearranged way, since a piece of art is not a linear medium, but an associative. It needs the active role of the viewer in constructing sense.

The artist can steer this process a bit, but he is

19 not in control.

You’re right, one of the roles of the artist, in my view, is to reveal the unexpected. But the unexpected will vary from viewer to viewer.

Sometimes I dumbfound myself, cause the game of imagery creates more than the artist can consciously intend. There is a power in the game

rt: „This is a kind of hermeneutic question. Do people need a connecting factor, a link to integrate the new with their existence? As Goethe once stated: “wouldn’t be the eye sun-like it couldn’t catch a glimpse of the sun”. I do not agree with that. Not all referential links are based on experience, unless the experience of imagination itself as your question implies. In the creation process to “No Borders…” even on an early stage of the process I knew the inner structure. Four areas with big brothers eye in the very middle linked by crossing ways, the data-highway for the money and the street blocked by the barrier, the toll bar and as anyone can see now the death toll bar. And right above the small black skyband of the stock indices. There is no place in the world anyone could behold this scene. You need imagination for such an extreme contraction, an unveiling contraction. Art should form the world by imagination. Art should not be a decorative reproduction of the world shrunk and nicely

2007-2008 working residency and projects in Calgary / Canada and the US
