This collection of my work explores the natural tension within a piece of wood, and how it can influence the final form. The balance between the woods free movement, and my intervention creates organic undulations.

I favour using pieces of Ash which don't have complex grain or patterning as this allows the physical form to take precedence and provides an outlet for the distortion of the wood as it transitions from a living tree to dry timber.

My making process is based around experimenting with materials, to explore the commonly unused virtues of materials. Using this, I found different methods of drying wooden forms, to encourage and accentuate the woods movement, resulting in my warped collection of sculptures.

Each piece is created from a single block of wood which has deep slots cut in on a lathe, to allow the wood to move during the lengthy drying process. The shapes which are formed express the structural tension within the wood, caused by its growth and drying.
