Harper Creek Community Swimming and Harper Creek Swim Club Spring Splash Parent and Little Tots Swim Class: This group is for both parent and children 6 months to less than 4 yrs old. The instructor will help you make your baby more comfortable in and around the pool. Tues/Thurs/Sat 6:30-7:00 p.m. at middle school pool.

Session 1. April 24th-May 5th $30 for 6 lessons ($5 a lesson) Session 2. May 8th-May 19th summer classes will be available Adult Water Aerobics: Shallow warmer water exercises that will help you tone your muscles with low impact resistance and help you improve your cardio with low stress endurance workout.

Mon/Wed 6:30-7:00, Saturdays 6:00-6:30 at middle school pool.

Session 1. April 23rd-May 19th Classes are 10 for $30, buy a punch card in the office, and the 11th class is free.

Session 2. May 21st – June 16th summer classes will be available Skills and Drills: This class is for 8 and under swimmers who can swim with their face in the water without assistance but need to build strength and technique.

These swimmers are eligible but not required to swim on the Harper Creek Swim Club.

These practices will be at the middle school pool.

Mon/Tue/Thurs/Fri at middle school pool 7:00-7:45 p.m.

Spring Session.

April 23-June 11th $90.00 Learn to Swim: This class is for the non swimmer ages 4 and up. Swimmers will learn how to breathe in the water and swim freestyle and backstroke. These swimmers will be in the water with instructors to help with safety and to learn the basics.

Once they graduate from this group they move to the Skill and Drills group.

Tues/Thurs/Saturday 6:00-6:30 at middle school pool.

Spring Session 1: April 23rd-May 19th $60.00 (12 Lessons) May 21st-June 9th $60.00 (12 lessons) Harper Creek Swim Club: Spring conditioning for the advanced swimmers.

Ages 9 and up are allowed to swim with this group. Lanes are broke up by ability and endurance. Swimmer will have the option to swim 3:00-4:30 or 5:30-7:00 at the high school pool. After swimming we will have dry-land and weight training from 7:00-7:45 in the weight room at the high school. You must be in 8th grade or higher to do weight training. This session will prepare swimmers for competitive swimming this summer.

We will be competing in the South Central Swim League and for those who are interested USA swimming will be available. Practices in spring will be Mon-Thurs.

This summer swimmers will have practice Monday-Friday twice per day at the best price in town. $110.00 (8 weeks) Summer Club Info will be available on line.

College Going Culture at Battle Creek Public Schools Battle Creek Public Schools students are embracing a "College Going Culture." The week of April 16 - 20 kicked off “College-Going Culture Spirit Week.” Students in each building celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Carson Scholarship with different themes each day. College t-shirts and sweatshirts were sported by both staff and students at all the schools in the district, students dressed up with what they would wear in their future careers and high school students read excerpts to elementary students from Dr. Ben Carson's book, "Gifted Hands". Colorful banners adorned the front of the high school proclaiming both the Carson Scholarship and the Legacy Scholarship.

This year an unprecedented 36 Carson scholarships were granted to students in grades 412. World famous Pediatric Neurosurgeon, Dr. Ben Carson will be the guest speaker at the Carson Scholars Reception on Friday, April 20 in the high school gymnasium. Many former Carson Scholars winners from the past ten years will also return for the celebration.

2012 marks the graduation of the first class of Legacy Scholars. Students who attend Battle Creek Public Schools beginning in 6th grade through graduation have the opportunity to attend Kellogg Community College for two years with their Legacy Scholarship.

The Legacy Scholarship includes tuition, books and even tutoring if needed.

The Carson and the Legacy Scholarships are not the only opportunities for assistance in post-secondary education. There are many other scholarship opportunities at Battle Creek Public Schools. To assist students in planning their next steps after high school the new "Futures" office was opened in February.

Battle Creek Central Forensics Team After a great invitational season, the Battle Creek Central Forensics Team qualified five students for the State Tournament which will be held at Western Michigan University on May 4 and 5.

Forensics is competitive speaking and acting. Dominique Mann (11th grade) in Dramatic Interpretation; Bonnie Smith (11th grade) in Storytelling; Ethan Fletcher (10th grade) in Extemporaneous Speaking; Jack Wentworth (10th grade) in Dramatic Interpretation; and Julie Loudin (11th grade) in Impromptu Speaking will all be representing Central. Loudin is a student from St. Philip and Wentworth from Lakeview. Neither school has a Forensics Program. The Battle Creek Central team has grown each year and currently has 34 members. The team has been competing all over the state for the past two months, taking top awards in many different events. Good luck at State!!

Mr. Jack Budrow is a 1940 graduate of Battle Creek Central. He played baseball, basketball and football while at Central. Mr. Budrow served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII and following his military service worked at H.B. Sherman Manufacturing. He was named “Man of the Year” twice by the National Warehouse Distributors Association. He is currently the President of Burr Engineering and has been an active member of the Battle Creek Presbyterian Church for 65 years.

Mr. Pierce Roberts is a 1948 graduate of Calumet High School and won two track letters at the school. He holds a Bachelors degree from Northern Michigan University in Biology and a Masters degree in Biology from the University of Michigan. While an undergraduate student in college he played football and ran track. From 1959-1992 Pierce taught history at Battle Creek Central High School. He was awarded the Michigan Social Studies “Teacher of the Year” in 1986. Mr. Roberts coached track, volleyball and football at Battle Creek Central football, holding three state titles, one in Track and two in football.

Ms. Cindy Cheyne is a 1970 graduate of Battle Creek Central and was involved in DECA Club and was manager of the school store and assistant manager for all sporting event concessions. Ms. Cheyne has been extremely involved in Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, hosted exchange students and has served as Chairwoman of the Foster Children & Adopted Children’s annual Christmas drive helping over 350 children per year. She holds an Associate’s degree from Kellogg Community College and a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from Western Michigan University. She has served as a member of the BCCHS Hall of Fame Board and on the Centennial Committee to celebrate Central’s 100th anniversary.

Mr. Erick Stewart is a 1987 graduate of Battle Creek Cental. He was the captain of the debate team at Southern University and A&M College at Baton Rouge. In 2000, he co-founded STEWART Industries, LLC, the largest minority owned company in Battle Creek where he serves as President. Mr. Stewart is very involved in the Battle Creek Community and St. Philip Catholic Church. He was Youth Group Director at the Church and is also a member of the Knights of Columbus and currently serves as Grand Knight. He is also on the Boards of the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Starr Commonwealth, Urban League and the Bronson Battle Creek Finance Committee.

Mr. James Demarest is a 1976 graduate of Springfield High School. In high school he played golf and baseball and was in Pep Band, Varsity Club and also a member of the National Honor Society. Mr. Demarest has been very involved in baseball through the years and was an 18-year volunteer for the AABC World Series. He is a graduate of Kellogg Community College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s Police Academy and the National Fire Academy. He has served the community as a Bedford Township Police Officer and Investigator as well as an Emmett Township Public Safety Officer and Supervisor. In 2005, Mr. Demarest was inducted into the Battle Creek Area and Michigan Baseball Amateur Halls of Fame.

Dr. Vernie Merz Tate graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1922 where she was valedictorian of her class. She attended Western Teachers College where she completed her four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in three years. She also holds a Bachelor of Literature degree from Oxford, and Ph.D.’s from Harvard and Radcliffe. Her illustrious career in education includes numerous honors, U.S. patents, and a host of honorary awards.

“Merze” overcame many obstacles due to race during her lifetime. She is one of the subjects of the book, “In Search of the Talented Tenth: Howard University Public Intellectuals and Dilemmas of Race”.

Mr. Elmer Eglekraut is a 1953 graduate of Battle Creek Central. He was the youngest boy to swim in the Leroy Sparks Lake Swim in 1943. In 1961 Mr. Eglekraut coached a group of neighborhood boys in baseball leading them to a City, State and National Championship. His team has a record of 99 wins and 11 losses in his last six years of coaching. In 1970, Mr. Eglekraut returned to swimming and has competed at the state, national and world levels setting new records. Mr. Eglekraut has received the U.S. National Swimmers’ Kerry O’Brien award and was named Michigan Masters Swimming Coach of the Year. He also received the Leroy Sparks Memorial Award for his contributions to both swimming and the community.

Ms. Winship graduated from Muskegon High School and Mt. Vernon Seminary in Virginia (now known as George Washington University at Mt. Vernon College). She also attended the University of Michigan and Argubright Business College in Battle Creek and the University of Chicago. She taught at both Southeastern and Southwestern Junior High Schools before teaching geography and business related classes at Battle Creek Central. She was active in the community serving as a Red Cross worker in both world wars. Her philanthropy included but was not limited to the Community Hospital, the YWCA, the YMCA, the Emily Andrus Home, the First Congregational Church and the University of Chicago Alumni Foundation. Ms. Winship also started the Winship Memorial Scholarship Foundation which has distributed over $5.3 million in scholarship money to students in the community.

Mr. Jim Nofs graduated from Port Huron High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his military service he played college football and earned his bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University. He received his Masters degree from Michigan State University. During his long and celebrated teaching career Mr. Nofs also coached football, baseball, basketball and girls and boys swimming. He was a teacher and swim coach at Northwestern Junior High School from 1971 – 1975 and was also a teacher and head coach of the Central High School Swimming Team. His years of teaching included mathematics, mechanical drawing, industrial arts and physical education. Mr. Nofs was awarded the “Leroy Sparks Aquatic Award” for a lifetime of service to local swimming.

Mr. William Pincoe is a 1957 graduate of Battle Creek Central. He was active in athletics and other activities at Central including the baseball team, student council, Math Club, and HI-Y. Mr. Pincoe played baseball at Albion College and received his Bachelors degree with majors in economics, political science and finance. He served in the U.S. Army and following his military service received his Masters degree from Michigan State University. Mr. Pincoe was co-owner of an investment management firm for 21 years.

Reverend Gysel is a 1964 graduate of Battle Creek Central. He played trombone in the Marching Band, Concert Band and Follies Dance Band. He graduated from Kellogg Community College, holds a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State, Master of Divinity from Methodist Theological School and Doctor of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary. Dr. Gysel has served as senior Pastor at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. Rev. Gysel can be heard on WBCK-FM in Battle Creek with his weekly radio show, “Faith Forum.”

Mr. Robert Wolfe is a 1957 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. He holds a degree from Michigan State University. Robert served in the U.S. Navy during VietNam. He has had an extensive career in commercial real estate and developed the Community of Rolling Hills, a five star manufactured home community of which many streets are named in honor of BCPS teachers and classmates. He has been a major force in keeping he Class of ’57 connected and helping those in need. Mr. Wolfe has been a positive force in purchasing real estate in downtown Battle Creek and raised funds to have the Holocaust Memorial Exhibit brought to Battle Creek.

Congratulations to the 2012 Carson Scholars Winners The Tenth Anniversary Carson Scholars Reception will be held Friday, April 20, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. in the Gymnasium at Battle Creek Central High School. The annual event honors students chosen for academic achievement and community service. Students must maintain a 3.75 G.P.A and demonstrate service to their community to qualify.

Student applications and essays are judged each year at the Carson Scholars Fund offices in Maryland. This year thirty-six, $1,000 college scholarships were granted to Battle Creek Public Schools students in grades 4-11.

Dr. Ben and Candy Carson who founded the scholarship program will be in attendance for the ceremony. Featured keynote speakers will Dr. Ben Carson and scholarship recipients Marley Sherlin, 5th grader, Verona Elementary School, Corinne Ivens, 8th grader, Northwestern Middle School and Tyler Willison, 9th grader, Battle Creek Central High School. Valley View Literacy Night On March 2 Valley View Elementary celebrated a Literacy Night. The school had invited many guest readers including Superintendent Hicks to the festivities. Monica Harris, local author spoke to students and parents about writing. She demonstrated how a title can catch the imagination.

Urbandale Celebrating Black History Month Superintendent Dr. Linda Hicks was an invited guest to an Urbandale Black History Month Celebration in February. Dr. Hicks helped the Urbandale staff and those assembled recognize many students for exemplary behavior with the “Firecracker Salute.” Dr. Hicks also read a book to students who were gathered in the gym for the occasion.
