1. If you live in Hastings be sure to VOTE next Tuesday. The question on the ballot is the adoption of up to 1 mil to transfer Riverside Cemetery to the City of Hastings for the operation and improvements until such time as the cemetery becomes self supporting. Check out the details in this week’s Banner and vote on May 7.

2. The spring edition of “Girls Night Out” in Downtown Hastings is next Thursday, May 9. The festivities will last from 5-8pm and over 30 merchants will participate. It is time for all you “girls” to gather together and celebrate as you shop & dine in Downtown Hastings. There will be discounts, demonstrations, giveaways, refreshments and special deals at most stores and restaurants. Pick up an event sheet at any participant and enjoy. You are invited to visit Bosley Pharmacy during GNO to receive our “Medbug Gift Bag” and a coupon worth 25% off almost anything we sell (good only during GNO) from 5-8pm. Information in the store.

3. How to celebrate Mother’s Day 2013 with mom. What do we do? Truth be told, a big hug & kiss, a quiet “thanks mom” for the support and love she has given you throughout the years is all most moms want and, for sure, the very least they deserve. But if you want to do more, may we suggest flowers, a card, candy & gifts to be most welcome and appreciated by mom and we can provide all of this and more. We also offer many opportunities to take mom to dinner on this very special day. Check out the Mother’s Day dining ads in this Reminder and shop Downtown Hastings and South Jefferson Street this week.

4. One of the big celebrations at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute is the Mother’s Day Brunch and this year’s dinner promises to be no exception.

The Brunch is next Sunday, May 9 with seatings at 11:30am & 1:00pm featuring an expanded menu for the day including a carving station and a larger than usual selection of entrees and desserts. Pre-registration and prepayment are required for brunch and, since this one usually sells out, you should call today. Also on Mother’s Day Sunday the institute will feature a program about “Landscaping with Native Plants” 12:15-1:00pm that is free to all. Also featured on Mother’s Day is the annual Native Plant Sale from 11:30am until 2:30pm. You may visit cedarcreekinstitute.org to check out a complete list of plants available at the sale. All plants may not be available on sale day so you may want to pre-order before Wednesday, May 8 by calling 269-721-4190. Also on this busy weekend at Pierce, they will sponsor a Spring Bird Hike on Saturday, May 11 from 8:00 until 10:30am through the wetlands, forests & fields of the institute, learning to identify birds by ear and sight. Cost is free to members, $6 for non-members.

5. Beginning this Monday, May 6, the Thornapple Arts Council will sponsor the annual High School Art Exhibition at Leason Sharpe Hall in the Barry Community Enrichment Center. The works exhibited are from Hastings High School Art Students and will be on display through May 16. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

6. Our local Farmer’s Market is open from 8am to 1pm every Friday during May in Downtown Middleville. The Hastings Farmer’s Market is open from 9am to 1pm each Saturday during May. Hours are extended after June 1.

Each market features farm fresh fruits, veggies, plants, trees, flowers, baked goods, syrup, handmade arts & more. Those interested in selling at the market call the Barry County Chamber of Commerce at 269-945-2454 for more information.

7. The Hastings Public Library will, through the use of stories, songs, crafts and playtime, learn how to “Let’s Get Dirty” during the Toddler Story Time (10:30am Tuesday) & the Pre-School Story Time (10:30am Friday) this week. The Movie Memories & Milestones “little gem” presentation this week (Thursday 5-8pm) will feature “A Yank at Eton” (1942) starring Mickey Rooney, Edmund Gwenn, Peter Lawford and Freddie Bartholomew.

8. The Gilmore Car Museum begins the season by offering you a chance to enter the Dust Off Car Show. You are invited to get your show car out of the garage, fire it up and dust it off. It costs you $5 a person if you show.

General admission is $7 and includes the show and the entire museum campus. Nothing formal, no trophies, no pressure, just dust it off and join in the fun.

9. There’s a new dentist in town. Spencer Barnes, DDS has opened his new state of the art practice, Barnes Dental Care in the Southside Professional Building on South M-37 in Hastings. Call 269-948-8500 for more information.
