Ralph Toastmasters Club has always been uniqueinitswayofcreatinggreatvalueforits members Through sheer comrade and engagement with its senior members, traditions and quality meetings Ralph Toastmasters has yet again set the standard for being a Club that members are happy & proudtobepartof.

I consider it a great pleasure and privilege to write for the Ralph Toastmasters Club 2nd Newsletter for 2022/2023 as the Division Director but also as a member who has seen first hand the amazing efforts of the club in making its mark under the leadership of President TM Sajan Pushpanathan & his executivecommitteefortheyear2022/2023.

But the Club stood strong andpushedtohavephysicalmeetingsdespite challenges because the Club leadership knew that it's strength lies in that live connection of its membership As a Division Director I am thankful for this drive of the Club as it set an example for other Clubs to follow and realise that they need to restrict themselves to the easier option and instead should strive to be strong even under the shadow of national adversity.

From the vibrant Themed Meetings, to excitedly anticipated Dinners after meetings, andofcoursethecovetedRalphToastmasters Annual Trip - the Club proceeded throughout the year to give it members that iconic excitementofbeingaRalphiewhilestillhaving educationaldevelopment.hisiswhatIwishto see in clubs, a place that not just makes us better speakers but make it easier to be ourselvesinthehardestoftimes.

The Executive Committee under the thrilling leadership of TM Sajan Pushpanathan has strived to achieve awards in Membership, Meeting Quality and Club Education in a manner that is natural and does not put pressureonthemembersthemselves.

A unique way this quality has come through thisyearisthroughthePublicRelationsofthe Club. Most of you might not know this but once upon a time… NO this is not a fairytale!

I was dragged into a speech contest by my mother when I was just 16 years old. I think she saw something in me, quite literally, after listening to Dhananjaya Hettiarachchi’s winning speech “I See Something in You” at the HNB Auditorium in 2014. This contest happened to be at Lyceum International, and it was my first time everbeingonstagetogiveaspeech. Although I was a thespian in school and loved acting, I had never given a speechofmyownonstagebeforean audience.

My very first speech was about my greatgrandmother, andthetopicwas “The Pearl of My Eye”. I had practiced this speech for almost two months, with my mother's encouragement. When my time came to deliver the speech in front of the audience and judges, I forgot everything - not just my speech, but even my great grandmother's name. I was shocked and felt like my entire body had stopped functioning. For a few seconds, I zoned out and then walked offthatstagewithoututteringaword.

I felt embarrassed about myself for not being able to deliver a story that an audience deserved to hear. Afteracoupleofyears, when I turned 18, my mother encouraged me to join a toastmaster’s club, and it happened to be Ralph Toastmasters. This time, I wanted this for myself more thananyoneelse.Peoplejoin toastmasters for different purposes, and I am grateful for the platform that it gave me to contest and improve myselfasaspeaker.

For me, contesting is a journey fromcraftingaspeechthatexcites me to talk in front of an audience to practicing and working on various levels of storytelling that helps me articulate my story. It also involves working with a mentor who understands my intentions of the speech. Finally, there's that excitement and hype to deliver my story to an audience that deserves to hear it. The journey ends the moment I complete my speech within 7 minutes and look back at the contestchair.

Formorethanhalfadecade,Icome back every year to deliver a story. That excitement to be on stage, the preparation, and the selfsatisfaction you get after delivering a speech is priceless. During these contests, sometimes you win, but most of the time, you learn, and thoselearningscannotbeexplained here because if I try to explain it, I feel like I’m limiting myself. If you ' re still reading this, SMILE! I urge you to getonthatstage, contest, andyou'll understandwhatI'mtalkingabout.

Contest with a purpose! I have mine, and it's personal. Make it personal! Remember why you ' re contesting. I strongly believe that it's not about winning; it's about how you make your audience feel because they may forget what you said, but they will never forgethowyoumadethemfeel during your speech. Find your purpose, and you'll be hooked onthisjourney!

Toastmasters’ meetings always enthuse a sense of joy and for most of us as we look forward to that day of the week. Meetings curated with the right mix of humour, educational and entertainment value is a platform for the club to develop and grow from strength to strength. Regularmeetingswhichareeducational, informativeand engaging serves as a fertile ground for growth and retention of members whilst attracting new members to theclub.

There are many ways to create that extra zing to club meeting to be energetic, fun and engaging whilst being educational and inspirational! Here are 5 tips to create that extra zing to club meetings whilst crafting an authenticpersonatoclubmeetings.

Welcome guests

Make sure guests “feel the love” and create a sense of belonging. Bycreatingawarmwelcomeprospectivememberswillgetagreat first impression. Encouraging guests to introduce themselves and gently coercing to take part in table topics and asking them to share their experiences is a soft selling point for guest to come backforthenextmeeting.

Laughter all the way

When you add a large dose of laughter to a meeting, the event becomes more lively, more fun and, yes, more unforgettable. As Dr Ralph Smedley once quoted ‘we learn best in times of enjoyment’.

Variety is the spice of club meetings

Aclubmeetinghasmanyfacets, education, fun andentertainment, camaraderieallconverging to create a unique experience for its members. Building in a theme and carrying it across the meeting will uplift the meeting to new heights. I am sure many of you will reminisce the unique thememeetingsyouhaveattended.Maybeyou plannedweeksaheadonwhattowearetc.

Adding guest speakers’, special presentations, speech marathons and even adding a joke master to the meeting will pique interest –breaking away from the monotony of the normal meeting Selecting a variety of role players, speakers and evaluators across the weeks also ensures that each club meetings hasitsuniquevibeandflavour.

Mentors and Buddies

Mentoring is an important facet of Toastmasters. Assigning mentors to members ensure that new members take part in the pathwaysprogramandreachmilestonesinthe educational pathways. Mentors can also help experienced members who wish to try something new, such as participating in a speech contest for the first time or stepping up totakeonleadershiprolesbeyondtheclub.

Assigning buddies for guests from the initial welcome through the meeting itself to the follow-up will ensure that first meeting experience is the start to a new journey. This ensures that each guest is able understand the sequence and structure of a meeting and help themtakepartinthefirstclubexperience.

Power of feedback

One of the greatest and powerful tools in the toastmaster program is the power of feedback. The quality of evaluations and the role of General Evaluator is an important aspect of a meeting which enriches the club meeting and helps to fine tune and create quality meetings.

Club meetings which are authentic that resonate with the diverse aspirations of members ensure that members are engaged deeplywiththeclubensuring the success of the club. Quality meetings will ensue greater participation, attract new members and ensure that club reaches its milestones of success all the way.

BEYONDTHECLUB

We always encourage our fellow members to step outside their comfortzone.Toventureout, takeup challenges and more importantly to simplydo.Dospeeches, evaluations, take leadership roles etc. Now once you become a member of a Toastmasters Club, you will start to take those tentative first steps outside your comfort zone and simply start speaking and doing pathways projects. Which can be a daunting but exciting step for most. Once you start though, remarkably Toastmasters will help you get comfortable and give confidence gradually. A remarkable thing is of course, gradually the club starts to becomeyourcomfortzoneforsome activities.

SOTHEN,IFYOUDOWANTTOTRY OUT A CERTAIN OPPORTUNITY OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE, AND THE CLUB ITSELF FEELS A BIT TOO COMFORTABLE, WHAT OPTIONSAREWELEFTWITH?

I believe a much underappreciated value of Toastmasters International Membershipistheveryobviousfact that by becoming a member, one becomes a member of an international organization. Which means, while your membership is placedtoaclub, youarecapableof interacting, and even, performing among the thousands of clubs acrossthecountryandglobe.

Toastmasters International has a hierarchy.

Everybodies memberships are bound to a club, this is the core of Toastmasters. An Area is made out of 3-4 clubs. While a Division is made out of 4-5 Areas. In the case of RalphToastmastersClub, webelongto Region13,District82(WhichisSriLanka and Maldives), Division D (Headed by DTM Dinuk Silva), Area D1 (Headed by yourstruly).

Being a Toastmaster gives you immense networking opportunities. Having access to a network of members across diverse community clubs and corporations, is indeed a great opportunity. To give a case in point, ifyouareforexamplethinkingof acareerchange, orlookingforaleadin a specific industry or corporate, reachingouttotheirToastmastersclub andinitiatingaconversationcouldbea very good first step. You might be able to even get yourself invited to a corporate club meeting and personally gettoknowprofessionalsfromthere.

I personally have taken advantage of the fact that there are so many different clubs in the country. One of my ambitions this year was trying to complete two pathways. I have already started with Dynamic Leadership and done most of my projects in Ralph Toastmasters Club meetings. I have also started with Team Collaboration pathways and have done level 1 projects mostly in other clubs outside Ralph. This truly challenged me to do speeches (including my ice breaker) in a crowd other than Ralph Toastmasters! I really felt some butterflies at first, but it gave me an opportunity to truly see how much I have learnt as a Ralph member. Also test my own competence in delivering a speech in frontofanewcriticalcrowd.Iamglad tosaytwooutofthreespeechesIdid,I was able to bag the best speaker ribbon the hosting clubs members voted. I also made a lot of new connections by doing so and expanded the number of people I knowwithinthefraternity.

In the year 2018, DTM Suganthi Periasamy who was then the District 82 Director, at the suggestion of DTM Sarmaa Mahalingam, gave me an opportunity to become the Assistant Public Relations Manager for District 82(Which was then SouthIndiaandSriLanka).

This was an opportunity to take roles outside the walls of the club, for I have been the VPPR of the club just the year before. It was an immense learning experience. To my very good fortune the Public Relations Manager (to whom I willbeassistantof, butdefactohandleinquiriesandPRguidanceofclubsinSri Lanka), one TM Thomas Abraham from a South India Toastmasters Club was a very passionate marketing communicator. This kind of opportunity not only puts me in new uncharted areas, and hence an opportunity to learn, but also allows me to expand the number of toastmasters I regularly meet (outside our RalphFamily).

I have also been a member of Battaramulla TMC and CharteredSecretariesTMC.

I held this position when DTM Mahesh Jayasinghe was the Division Director of Division A. In those days they were known as DivisionGovernorsandnotDivisionDirectors.

In the next Year I was very fortunate to become the Division Finance Manager of DivisionA.

The next position I held was in Ralph, where I was club Treasurer when TM Nalin De silva wasthePresident.

SPEECHCRAFTER!

Itwassuchanhonourandprivilegetobe a part of this wonderful 10-week speechcraft program initiated by the Group Learning and Development of John Keells Holdings and conducted by The Ralph TMC.I can vouch that the 10week speechcraft program did magic, many of us were able to make the maximum use of this – to learn and capture the art of public speaking. All Toastmasters from Ralph TMC were super supportive and were there with us throughout, right from the very beginning, educating us, guiding us and encouraging us to develop our skills of publicspeaking.

Ralphies, your support, guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback immensely helped us transform into better speakers over 10 weeks. All of us at JKH appreciate your patience and support, I know it wassometimesnotthateasytowork withussinceitwastheveryfirsttime that some of us here had experienced/conducted toastmaster meetingsortheirprocedures.

A BIG THANK YOU again for all the magic done on us, your magic and hardworkreallyworkedinhelpingus acquire the skill of public speaking withinsuchashorttimespan.

This speechcraft program really helped us acquire a lot of knowledge on how to effectively address an audience on any given topic. SPEECHCRAFT CORDINATOR

I’ve always loved being a part of speechcraft programmes. It’s an opportunity to share the experience as a toastmaster and help individuals develop their public speaking and leadership skills. And undertaking the coordinationofaspeechcraftprogramtooneof the largest conglomerates was a pivotal moment in my Toastmasters journey This experience allowed me to test my leadership and organisational skills, and provided me with an opportunity to learn and grow as a communicator.

The 10-week speechcraft programme was designed to introduce and practise effective public speaking to 30 members of John Keells Holdings. The program provided me with an opportunity to interact with professionals from diverse corporate backgrounds, including those in supply chain management, IT, the hospitality sector, andmore.

Once we had the participants, we organised a model meeting to introduce them to the program andtooneanother.Wealsobroughtinexperienced toastmasters from the club to conduct the first meeting. This helped to set a positive tone for the entire programme and encouraged the participants.

One of the highlights of the programme was the educational presentations. We had eight outstanding toasmasters from our club who made the learning more fun, interactive and impactful. Each session focused on a particular aspect of public speaking, such as speech structure, vocal variety, body language, and effective evaluation. This helped the participants to overcome fear and anxiety when speaking in public. Another highlight was the finale of the programme. The participants planned a Christmas themed meeting setting the toneforajoyfulholidayseason.

It was amazing to see how much progress everyone had made over the course of the program. Many senior members from the company and toastmasterswerepresenttowitnessthe transformation.

Despite the challenges we faced during the program, I was fortunate to have a highly supportive team member, Pawani, who provided invaluable assistance throughout. Furthermore, the coordinator from JKH and the participants in the speechcraft program were receptive to ourguidanceandeagertolearn.

Overall, it was incredible to see the transformation of the participants, and it was gratifying to know that we were helpingthemtodevelopskillsthat would serve them well in all aspects of their lives.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS

As a student, public speaking can be a daunting task. Whether it's a class presentation, a speech competition, or even a job interview, the ability to effectively communicate your ideas and thoughts is essential. However, many students struggle with public speaking due to anxiety, lack of confidence, or inadequate preparation. This iswhereaSpeechcraftprogramcomesin.

Recently, Ralph Toastmasters Club conducted a Youth Leadership program for students in the AVS community, aimed at improving their public speaking skills. The program was conducted by experienced public speakers who taught the students the art of effective communication through various interactive sessions. And I had the privilege of coordinating the program this yearalongwithTMHariprasath.

SPILLING THE BEANS

OH, WHAT A TRIP!

So my first trip encounter with the Ralphies went a bit like this.. As a new member to one of the finest clubs in Colombo you tend to set certain expectations, and they usually are somewhat close in the formal setting of the classroom where some of the most brilliant speeches are made. Now having this in mind and you are to attend a one night stay trip with this bunch you tend form expectations again. Some of my expectations vs reality moments that ran in mind were like this;

Dresscode

Punctuality

Expectation -“Omg timing might be serious, I better make it on time. Club meetings start times are usually serious”.

Reality– To my surprise none of them were there on time, instead we had to even open the gates of the resort by ourselves.

Expectation–“OkthisIthoughtwasobviou but I still thought some may still have som formofformalattire”.

Reality - The whole bunch were in the shorts, skinnies, and flip flops. Im sure th bikinis and swimming trunks may hav emerged with a tad bit more spirits and a extraday.

PAGE20

SPILLING THE BEANS

Environment

Expectation–“Peoplemight walkinqueues, therehasto be some kind of speech session, theresgoingtobea formal addressing, theres going to be rules and regulations, we might tuck inby9pm”

Reality – There was zero formality expect for the booze which was flowing 24/7, and Dr. Mahesh’s strictapproachtothegroupgamesandbonding sessions, which was a tad bit military, but everyone understood the importance of how it encouraged bonding and teamwork. Everything was just casual and chilled out and an atmosphere of fun. The pool was christened after afewbottlesweredownedwithafiercebattlefor survivalwaterpologamethatturnedwaterrugby inafewhours.BynightfallIwassurprisedtoseea DJ set up, fine music and delicious food and a verymerrybunchdancingawayuntildawn.

People/Behavior

Expectation – “People might give speeches every hour, they’regoingtobeveryformalandpolite, itsgoingtobe somewhatquiet”

Reality - Everyone was just chilled as fudge. Greetings were mostly humorous insults, formal personas of many were stripped down with entertaining stories. Prishi was fondly remembered for quenching her thirst, Arunan displayed a form of dance art that I thought might detach his limbs, Chandana was high as snoop from the time I saw him and stripped his shirt off in a jiffytotryandbeRalphking,Nethmihadsomuchbeer that she was caught walking with one during our departure too. This is just a summary of an eventful outing enjoyed by all. Somethings that happen in WadduwastaysinWadduwa.Oh,whatatrip!
