I learn so much about a place from the close observation necessary to draw it. Before I became an urban sketcher in 2011, I looked at things in my own hometown every day without truly seeing them. When I started carrying and using a sketchbook daily, it’s as if I put on new glasses: Suddenly I saw details (sometimes entire buildings!) that I’d never noticed before. Now, whether I am at home or traveling, if I want to see closely and remember fully, all I have to do is sketch.

Sketching on location simply makes me happy in a way that nothing else does. I love the focused attention of observing a place, and responding to it by making a drawing. I love the immediacy and unpredictability of observing and drawing life as it happens. It’s always fresh, never exactly the same twice, and my response changes too—with a new insight, a different material, observation of a different mood or light. I try to grasp what is essential to a place, as well as catch what I see and feel there in that particular moment. I feel the sense of community I’ve found in Urban Sketchers whether I’m sketching on my own or with a group…since the feeling of shared purpose is part of what inspires and continues to motivate me.
