Notes: The purpose of a sketch walk is to foster the art of onlocation drawing. On location drawing focuses our attention on the details, color, structure and spatial relationships of designed environments. More than a rendering tool it’s a “seeing” aid that refines our observations. In a nutshell the activity is to get a bunch of sketchers together and have some fun sketching with no judgment on good or bad drawing. In considering sketch walk locations, two things to remember: Access to bathrooms and food.

Instructions...
1 CONNECT... Warm up, connect eye, hand and paper
2 COLLECT... Look around. Make quick sketches of objects, plants and people. Figure out perspective views. Start framing the spaces you want to sketch.
3 COMPOSE... Bring it home. Pick a view. Take your time. Add color. Enjoy. SKETCH WALK 2012
WASHINGTON SQUARE AND UNION SQUARE PARK It was a great time of day and the weather and sunlight were wonderful. We were accompanied by the “normal, strange and fascinating characters” you can only find in New York, specifically in the Village and more specific yet, the West Village.

The original weather forecast for that day was not good: An overcast and drizzly morning with thunderstorms in the afternoon. Luckily, after an overcast morning, the sun came out and the day was perfect for sketching. At day’s end over 20 sketchers drew, worked on a tan, walked and conversed. After it was all done some of the hungrier folk went for a round of delicious burgers and fries. It was a great afternoon. Can’t wait until the next one!
