Director's Notes Erin Malia Cross Assistant Professor of Art and Executive Director of Rall Gallery

The Doane University Permanent Art Collection is an impressive group of prints, paintings, drawings, and some sculptural works. A vast number of these artworks are produced by notable and celebrated artists. The educational and cultural value of the art collection is immeasurable. As a teaching and learning platform, students have opportunities to work with the gallery director to learn basic archiving, art handling techniques and curatorial collection focused exhibitions through object-based learning and hands on experiences that introduce students on the inner workings of running a gallery and maintaining a permanent collection. Gathering Table is a collection of art celebrating the potential bounty and social promises that beckon and excite when food is presented to the viewer. Food has been a focus in still life genre artwork for centuries and has defined the artist’s relationship with pleasure and struggle through the edible subject matter chosen.

This year’s student curator, Studio Arts Major, Emma Ryan has thoughtfully chosen artwork that reflects a theme to celebrate community and bounty with the still life subject of food. In addition to curating a collection show, she has organized community engagement through a food drive and is serving as the gallery’s November liaison for its Saturday Drop in and Draw session.

Curatorial Notes Emma Ryan Student Curator

Within the month of November 2021, a student curator-led show will be on exhibit at the Rall Gallery at Doane University in Crete, Nebraska. This exhibit will include works of art from the Doane Univeristy’s Permanent Art Collection. Pieces were selected depicting various arrangements of food. This theme is not only relevant within the location of the venue, but also the time of the show. November is often considered a time of celebration because it marks the end of harvest season, along with this comes celebration and feasting with friends and family. With Thanksgiving at the end of the month, students are able to travel home and see loved ones.

Sometimes the thought of a home cooked meal brings comfort and excitement for those who have not been home since the beginning of school.

Featured artists such as Carl Broemel, Nancy Teague, and Mary Silverwood have pieces within this show. Majority of the show is two-dimensional; however, there are two soft sculptures from the Anne Burkholder estate.

Carl Broemel Carl Broemel was born in 1891 in Cleveland, Ohio. He became the youngest student in the Cleveland School of Art, where he studied decorative design and eventually graduated in 1909. After graduation he studied for some time in Europe and New York but eventually returned back to Cleveland. He is known for his detailed watercolor and landscape paintings and the “guild system” he instituted for varying degrees of artists to work together in a single studio to produce works of art as a cohesive unit.

Carl Broemel’s artwork were a part of the original Doane Permanent Art Collection. Doane is fortunate to have several of Broemel’s still life paintings. Portraying depth and a delicate sense of naturalism, Broemel’s watercolor painting’s “Apples”, “Plums”, and “Mushrooms” are a beautiful and gentle approach to the still life genre.

Mary Silverwood Mary Silverwood was born in Bryan, Texas in 1932 but raised in Washington, DC and Fort Worth, Texas. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Texas and later received a post graduate studies in teaching at Sonoma State University. Her work relies heavily on bold uses of color and strong composition. She is best known for her pastel landscape paintings, but within this exhibition three of her still life paintings are on display. Within each piece there is somewhat of an abstract ground driven by shape. This is very evident within “Eggplants".

There is a beautiful contrast between the intense blue shadow and the mustard colored background.

Silverwood’s pieces were more recently acquired to the Doane’s Permanent Art Collection sometime in 2013.

Other Known Artists Nancy Teaque is a Nebraska artist known for her abstract expressionist paintings. She graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In her early work she painted realistically, focusing on the ways in which light transformed objects. “Banana Peppers in Window '' is one of the pieces from the beginning of her artistic career. The piece has a beautiful contrast between light and dark that adds depth and spatial awareness.

Sammy Lynn is a Nebraska artist from Glenvil, Nebraska. She is known for her excellent use of batik. Batik is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to fabric. The pieces within this exhibition are soft sculptures using this technique. The wax is delicately painted on the sculptures and then dipped in dye to so everything but the fabric parts coated in wax are dyed. “Mason Jars” are a great example of the intricacy of the process.

Terry Hager has taught at the University of Nebraska-lincoln, North Dakota State University, and also privately. He is an award winning painter from Fargo, North Dakota. “One, Two, Three” is a wonderful realistic graphite drawing conveying light and dark.

Judy Greff was born January 7, 1941, and raised in the Sandhills of Nebraska. She specializes in realistic acrylic paintings. This piece is a part of the Burkholder Estate gifted to Doane University by Anne Burkholder.
