Administrator’s Letter

Holiday greetings from the Historic Resources and Museum Program. We wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season full of mirth, joy, and history! As we prepare for 2025, our elves are gearing up for a dynamic and inspiring Black History Month celebration. Each year, we honor the rich cultural heritage and enduring contributions of the Black community through engaging events, interactive exhibits, and educational programming throughout the HRM Program. Read more about these exciting plans in the newsletter and check the HRM Program’s website and Parks social media channels for the most up-to-date schedule, registration details, and event locations. All events are open to the public, with many offered free of charge.

In other exciting news, we welcomed two new staff in the program. Beck Silber began duties as the new Assistant Director of the City of Raleigh Museum. Beck most recently worked at the Five Points Center for Active Adults in Recreation and brings a wealth of previous museum experience to us including working at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas. The museum section also promoted Hazel Boomer into the newly created role of Site Director at the Dr. M.T. Pope House Museum. Hazel previously served as Program Manager at Pope House Museum. Please help welcome both Beck and Hazel into their new roles with our program.

As always, feel free to reach out to me anytime to tell me what you think of the newsletter or just to chat. I am always interested in ways we can improve our programs.

Chair’s Letter

As the cold chill of the winter temperatures take hold in Raleigh, I am reminded of the Christmas song “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” Although old man winter has settled in Raleigh, there are plenty of fun winter things to do in Raleigh when it’s cold. One way for the entire family to enjoy winter festivities in Raleigh is to be a part of Family Fun Day at the City of Raleigh Museum. On Family Fun Day, you and the family will enjoy an educational and entertaining experience that allows you to explore the museum in exciting and new ways. Come in from the cold and enjoy First Fridays, also being featured at the City of Raleigh Museum. First Fridays offer a unique theme, including performances, crafts, and educational activities. Be sure to visit the Dr. M.T. Pope House Museum for the storytelling of the ‘Bottom Rail on Top’: Black Civil War Reenactors, where you will find yourself traveling back in time to see United States Colored Troops and allies as they tell stories of reallife Black soldiers and their lives in the camps and the front lines. If you and the family would like to experience the essence of Raleigh in winter, come join us on Saturdays from March through December for a narrated, hour-long tour of downtown Raleigh on The Historic Raleigh Trolley. Yes, baby, it’s cold outside, so, let’s grab a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy the City of Raleigh in winter.

HRM Program’s Newest Site Takes Center Stage in City’s Preservation Efforts

Every February, attention turns to celebrating Black History Month. But for the City of Raleigh, Black history is celebrated all year long. This year is filled with several major projects which preserve and present Raleigh’s rich African American history and the HRM Program’s new facility, the John P. “Top” Greene Community Center is at heart of the effort.

Through bond-funded initiatives and public art projects, the City of Raleigh is providing over $12 million dollars to fuel the rebirth of the Top Greene Center. The size of the City’s investment makes it a national leader in financial investments in African American cultural projects. This year, plans will be finalized for an expansion of the community meeting space at the center, as well as new space for more exhibits, collections storage, and an oral history recording studio. Another project in development is the South Park Heritage Trail, which uses the center at Top Greene as a trailhead and carries visitors on a two-mile loop that explores the city’s colorful Black history. The site will also shine with new pieces of public art by the talented African American artist Dare Coulter. These ambitious projects inspired the community to petition to rename the site as the John P. “Top” Greene African American Cultural Park and Center. These investments will ensure Raleigh’s Black history will be saved and shared in a state-of-the-art facility for generations to come.
