Bypartneringwithvolunteers,RaleighParksexpandsitsresources,developspositivecommunityrelationships,and providesagreatplaceforourcommunitytoliveandplay.
Why Do We Connect Our Community Through Volunteerism?
Connectingthecommunitytovolunteeropportunitiesprovidesagatewaytoformingmeaningfulpartnershipswith thoseRaleighParksserves.Volunteersdirectlyenhancetheircommunitiesthroughprovidingexceptional experiencessuchascoachingyouthathleticleagues,instructingrecreationalclasses,supportingevents,andeven supportingtheenvironmentalhealthofRaleighthroughourparkenhancementandstewardshipopportunities.
Thesemeaningfulexperiencesforthevolunteer,programparticipants,staff,andourdepartmentcultivateaculture ofconnectednesstoone’scommunity.Eachexperiencehastheabilitytobuildinvestmentinourparksandtrails whilecarryingphysicalandmentalhealthbenefitsforallinvolved.
VolunteersaremorethanaresourcetoRaleighParks.Theyaredirectlyconnectedtotheaccomplishmentofthe missionandtheexperiencesofthecommunityatlarge.
Volunteer Services Program FY 24 Accomplishments
ThisyearmarkedanotherexceptionalyearofvolunteerismwiththeRaleighParks,RecreationandCultural ResourcesDepartment.TheVolunteerServicesProgramsawgrowthfromourcommunitydonatingtheirtime, talentsandresources.Thisyearwecelebratedsomegreatsuccessesinpartnershipwithourvolunteersand colleagues.Hereareafewkeyhighlights:
• Volunteer Participation: Justover12,500volunteersassistedwithparkenhancementprojects,youth athleticleagues,events,andmuchmore.Thisbringsusclosertoourpre-COVID-19averageof13,000 volunteersayear Theprogramhasseencontinuedrecoverypost-COVID.Volunteersservedapproximately 64,000hours,whichisbeingvaluedatover$2millionbasedontheIndependentSectorsValueofVolunteer Service.
• CERVIS Volunteer Management Software: TheVolunteerServicesProgram(VSP)hasbeenutilizing CERVISfor12yearsbutpreviouslyjustforrecruitment.OverthelasttwoyearstheVSPteamworkedto transitiontheentiredepartmentintoutilizingCERVISfornotonlyrecruitment,butalsoforloggingimpact andasasingular,department-widedatabase.Thistransitionhasallowedustocollectsomeinteresting impactdatathisyear.Forexample,wehadover400littercleanupsreportedtousforatotalofroughly 48,000lbs oflitter! Volunteers, be sure to report your impact so we can continue to tell your story!
• Website Updates: TheexpandedutilizationoftheCERVISsoftwarehasalsoallowedustomakenumerous improvementstoourwebsitesuchasembeddingourCERVISpostingsdirectlyintoit.Thenumberof opportunitiescanbeoverwhelmingtomanageorsiftthrough,buttherearenowiconstoshowtherequired participantageandfilteroptionsatthetoptosortthroughtheopportunities.Thereisevenacalendarview toshowwhatisavailableonaspecificdate.
• Summer Youth Programs: TheVolunteerServicesProgramcontinuedtheirpartnershipwithConservation CorpsNCfortheDixParkYouthConservationCorps.Thispartnershipprovidescareerandeducational experienceinthefieldofconservationtolocalteens.TheVolunteerServicesProgramalsopartneredwith twoRaleighParkssummercamps(TeenCorpsCampandTeensBehindtheSceneswithParksandFacilities). Thesecampsofferedopportunitiesforteenstogetservicehoursforschoolaswellasprovidedan introductiontopossiblecareersrelatedtoparkmaintenanceandnaturalresources.Learnmoreonpage14.
• Volunteer Agreement Update: Thisyear,theVolunteerServicesProgramcreatedabrand-newvolunteer agreementthatwillbeusedmovingforward.Thisnewagreementallowsstafftocustomizeeverythingfrom jobdutiestothefrequencyofvolunteering,inordertocorrectlyrepresenteachspecificopportunityor partnership.Thisupdatedagreementhasremovedoutdatedverbiagethatnolongerappliedtothemajority ofouropportunitiesandpartners.Wewillstarttransitioningcurrentagreementstothisnewoneasthey comeupforrenewal.Weareexcitedtobetterrepresentourpartnershipsmovingforward.

Volunteer Services Program Summer Youth Initiatives
Teen Camps

Thissummer,theVolunteerServicesProgrampartneredwiththeRecreationDivisiontocoordinatelearningand volunteeringopportunitiesfortwosummercamps.
Teen Corps Camp ismanagedbytheRaleighParksTeenProgramandisacampthatcoordinatesopportunitiesfor teenstoacquirecommunityservicehoursforschool. Thisyearoneoftheiropportunitieswastovolunteerwith ParksandNaturalResourcestodoeverythingfromlittercleanupstovolunteeringinthegreenhouse.
Teens Behind the Scenes with Parks and Facilities isacampmanagedbytheRalphCampbellCommunityCenter andisfocusedonprovidinghands-onexperiencestolearnaboutdifferentcareersinParkMaintenanceandNatural Resources.TheVolunteerServicesteamhelpedconnectthiscamptodifferentexpertsintheirfieldandcoordinated someofthehandsonlearningopportunities.

Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) Dix Park Youth Conservation Corps

ThissummermarkedthestartofthefourthCCNCDixParkYouthConservationCorp. Thiscrewofsixteensandtwo young-adultcrewleadersspentsixweeksworkingonconservationandparkmaintenanceprojectsatDixPark.
Project Examples: Thiscrewcontributed 1,920 hours ofservicetothedepartmentandcompletedawidevarietyof projectssuchasbuilding 6 swingpads,spreading 750 bails worthofpinestraw,removing 1,200 lbs.oflitter, pruning 53 trees,removinginvasiveplantspeciesin 6 acres ofland,maintaining .25 miles oftrail,andinstalling 75 yards oftemporaryfencing.
Education Sessions: Thisyear,thecrewlearnedaboutPoliticalScienceandSoil,ParkMaintenanceandEvent Preparation,FederalandLocalGovernmentCareerJourney,CityofRaleighGreenhouseOperations,ParkPlanning, TheDixParkConservancyandaParkforAll,Raleigh’sWatershed,InvasivePlantSpecies,andJobReadiness.
