‘Adopt a Heritage’ is for maintenance of tourism amenities in monuments, Ministry I n response to certain reports appearing in the media regarding Adopt a Heritage Scheme, the Ministry of Tourism has clarified that the “Adopt a Heritage: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan”, is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and State/UTs Governments. The Project aims to develop synergy among all partners to effectively promote “responsible tourism”.

It aims to involve public sector companies, private sector companies and corporate citizens/individuals to take up the responsibility for making our heritage and tourism more sustainable through development, operation and maintenance of world-class tourist infrastructure and amenities at ASI/ State heritage sites and other important tourist sites in India.

They would become ‘Monument Mitras’ through the innovative concept of “Vision Bidding”, where the agency with best vision for the heritage site will be given an opportunity to associate pride with their CSR activities. The aim is enhancement of

tourist experience and promotion of the incredible heritage sites to bring them on tourism map.

The project primarily focuses on providing basic amenities that includes cleanliness, public conveniences, drinking water, ease of access for differently abled and senior citizens, standardised signage, illumination and advanced amenities such as surveillance system, night viewing facilities, tourism facilitation center that will result in more tourist footfalls.

The response to the project has been very encouraging as the agencies that have come forward for adoption includes not only public and private industry/ individuals but also schools and law firms. So far, four MoU’s have been signed between Ministry of Tourism, Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) and Govt. of Jammu & Kashmir for Mt. Stok Kangri, Ladakh, J & K and Ministry of Tourism, Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI), Uttarakhand Government for Trail to Gaumukh and more.

Amusement park industry to be INR 4,000 crore by 2020 T he domestic amusement park industry is estimated to grow to at least INR 4,000 crore by 2020, according to Indian Association of Amusement Parks and Industries, boosted by rising disposable incomes, focus on safety standards and hygiene.

“The Indian amusement and theme park industry has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate of more than 17.5 per cent with annual revenue of around INR 17 billion, is estimated to grow to at least INR 40 billion (INR 4,000 crore) by 2020,” the association said.

Amusement Parks in India attract over three crore visitors annually and contribute nearly 40 per cent of the total leisure industry turnover which are key drivers of growth among the services sector in India.

About 30 to 35 per cent visitors are from outstation and thus a major source of tourism.

Children and youth visit the park either in school groups or with families and constitute 50 per cent of park visitors, while adults constitute the remaining as they either visit with their families or in corporate groups.

s per the recent report by Ministry of Tourism on the basis of information received from Bureau of Immigration (BOI), FTAs in March 2018 were 10.26 lakh as compared to 9.05 lakh in March 2017 registering a growth of 13.4 per cent.

FTAs during the period January-March 2018 were 31.27 lakh as compared to 28.45 lakh in January-March 2017 registering a growth of 9.9 per cent. The percentage share of Foreign Tourist Arrivals in India during March 2018 among the top 15 source countries was highest from Bangladesh (19.59 per cent) followed

by UK (11.56 per cent), USA (10.79 per cent), Russian Federation (3.89 per cent), Sri Lanka (3.72 per cent), Malaysia (3.36 per cent), Canada (3.35 per cent), Germany (3.19 per cent), China (2.67 per cent), Australia (2.62 per cent), France (2.58 per cent), Japan (2.11 per cent), Thailand (2.00 per cent), Singapore (1.64 per cent) and Afghanistan (1.60 per cent).

During the month of March, 2018 a total of 2.46 lakh tourist arrived on e-Tourist Visa as compared to 1.46 lakh during the month of March, 2017 registering a growth of 68.8 per cent.

During January-March 2018, a total of 7.62 lakh tourists arrived on e-Tourist Visa as compared to 4.67 lakh during January-March 2017, registering a growth of 63.0 per cent

ITDC signed MOU with Hyderabad Based Suraas Impex

ndia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) Ltd, the public sector undertaking under the aegis of Ministry of Tourism, signed a MOU with Hyderabad based M/s Suraas Impex for developing a mega tourism destination project at Bairav Lanka in Kakinada, East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh for an estimated cost of INR 550 crores in the initial phase-I. This project is the first of its kind for the State- owned ITDC with any private player.

During the MoU signing ceremony, dignitaries who were present included Ravneet Kaur, IAS, Chairperson and Managing Director (C&MD), ITDC; Piyush Tiwari, Director (Commercial & Marketing), ITDC and Ravi Pandit, General Manager, Ashok Consultancy & Engineering Services (ACES), ITDC among other eminent officers from Suraas Impex.

Alphons said, “India is an iconic destination that offers unique experiences of climate, geography, culture, art, literature, and food” The Minister also added that Government wants to give people in India and across the world an opportunity to immerse in our country’s rich heritage. And, through the partnership with Google, it wants to engage new and global audiences and offer them immersive content in a never-before-seen manner.

Speaking during the event, K. J. Alphons added that taking virtual reality to the common man at a low/free cost will further enable an increase in the tourist footfall in Iconic monuments and other tourist destinations with a focus on Museums.

Ramu B. IAS, the new Director for Karnataka Tourism

amu. B, IAS took charge as the Director of the Karnataka state tourism department on April 24, 2018. The 2010-batch IAS officer Ramu.B, IAS had earlier served as the District Collector in Chamarajanagar. He said his priority in the new role would be to improve the marketing of Karnataka tourism.

“One State Many Worlds” is all about selling an experience. I need about some months to study and understand the kind of experience we are trying to market. Be it responsible tourism or adventure tourism, I would really like to market the state to different kind of people,” he said.

By Gagneet Kaur How do you think the medical/wellness tourism segment in India, has evolved over the years? How is Maharashtra promoting this segment?

Wellness tourism, I think is the core of Indian culture.

For centuries, India has been known for Ayurveda and other healing experiences. Sadly, the pace of growth for this segment is not what is actually expected. The other parts of the world have learned from India and gained already and I think a lot can be done in this segment.

Maharashtra has already taken a step forward to promote the segment. We have identified the Nashik District (close to Pune) as a wellness tourism hub. We are working towards setting up huge wellness facilities, from Yoga to Ayurveda, from hydrotherapy to Meta therapy and many more. Wellness is what the new world wants and Maharashtra is preparing to offer the best in this segment. And I believe that with the policies in place, we see a drastic change and one lead forward by the Government of Maharashtra in wellness and medical tourism.

Any plans to tie-up with the private bodies/ healthcare sectors?

Wellness or medical segment is not just limited to Yoga or Ayurveda; it also includes treatments like organ transplant, open heart surgeries, knee transplant, cosmetic surgery, cancer therapy, dental treatments and more. Plus, all around the world, people have realised that an Indian Medico is the most reliable person for their treatment. Diagnosis is something which electronic gadgets can’t do but the Indian doctors have been doing it so well for the centuries. Plus, states like Maharashtra give the costeffectiveness which is good and is at par with the other

states in India. People, especially from the Middle East, African and South East Asian countries are looking at Maharashtra for their medical treatments. The Maharashtra State Government has undertaken a host of measures to position itself as an ideal medical hub. Amongst the various objectives of this policy, some significant ones to note include public-private partnerships in the tourism sector, development of tourist destinations and avenues, development of tourism infrastructure in the state and more.

As mentioned, a lot of people from the Middle East visit India for their medical treatments.

How do you think platforms like Arabian Travel Market (ATM) help promote Maharashtra as an ideal medical destination?

ATM is an ideal platform for us to showcase our products to the Middle Eastern region. We assure them the best state-of-the-art facilities in Mumbai and entire Maharashtra. At the same time, we are trying to bridge the gaps by providing the proper facilities for the tourists, post their treatments. The aspects of food, entertainment, shopping and post-treatment relaxation are taking into consideration so that the tourists could enjoy a 360-degree experience giving them a ‘home to home’ feel. The Middle East region, indeed, has a huge potential for Maharashtra. We just have to let them test the waters; once they are reassured that the Middle East is a huge market we are looking at.

What are the other segments that Maharashtra Tourism is aggressively promoting this year?

Apart from wellness tourism, we have a lot of other

products to showcase which include adventure tourism, aqua tourism, mine tourism, horse tourism and wine tourism. We are looking at building and expanding strong tourism prospects such as the Horse Museum to fascinate huge numbers of travellers all across the globe. Mine tourism is another segment which is very interesting and different from the other products. Under this initiation, tourists will get an opportunity to visit the deep inside the coal mines to understand the intricacies involved in coal mining.

As a Minister of Maharashtra, I would like to convey the message - ‘Visit Maharashtra. See Maharashtra. And to see, you have to believe it.’

Other than participating in international/ national trade fairs, how is Maharashtra planning to market its tourism products?

We have come a long way and we still need to market the destination a lot. Portrayal on Televisions, through media channels and social media platforms, seem to be the way forward for Maharashtra Tourism. Also, keeping in mind the powerful impact of social media today, we have a designated team that reaches out to people, whenever and wherever required.

What more would you like to highlight about the state?

Maharashtra is a diverse place and has everything, be it historic forts, scenic beaches, dense jungles, temples, cities, endless food and shopping options or agro-tourism where people can experience the rural life closely. Conceptualising the ‘seeing is believing’ policy, I would, therefore, like to invite everyone to come and experience Maharashtra, I’m sure you’ll fall in love with this magnificent state.

“To build Australia’s attractiveness in the minds of the consumers and to promote Australia as an ideal holiday destination, we will continue to build on our global campaign, ‘There’s Nothing Like Australia’, with an increased focus on the country’s unique aquatic and coastal offerings, nature and wildlife and food and wine culture,” Kashikar starts on a positive note.

“The key focus areas to achieve our objectives would include increased focus on digital media, leveraging platforms such as search, social, content, videos and re-targeting, collaboration with airlines and our key distribution partners to offer attractive deals, working closely with our key advocates, media and influencers, especially during the Indian cricket team’s tour of Australia in December 2018 and product

enhancement through our network of Aussie Specialist Agents,” he further highlights.

Best known for its aquatic and coastal lifestyle, spectacular nature, unique wildlife and diverse culinary experiences, Australia offers varied experiences that appeal to all age groups. Kashikar informs whilst Sydney, Gold Coast, Great Barrier Reef and Melbourne are the most desirable destinations, the appeal for new destinations such as Kangaroo Island, Canberra, Uluru, and Tasmania is on the rise. And to launch and promote new products and experiences, Tourism Australia has been leveraging the Aussie Specialist Program to promote the emerging states and territories that are gaining popularity among Indian tourists.

“Whilst there were 310,000 arrivals from India for the year ended February 2018, there were 80,700 visitors travelled during the Indian summer and school holiday months of April, May and June 2017, representing an average 14 per cent growth over the previous year. Based on our market insights and forward booking trend shared by our key distribution

partners and airlines, we expect to maintain the double-digit growth in arrivals from India to Australia during the upcoming summer travel months,” emphasises Kashikar.

To facilitate new product development and destination awareness, Tourism Australia engages deeply with travel agents and tour operators via a number of initiatives. Some of the key activities undertaken include familiarisation trips for travel agents to new Aussie destinations, inviting agents to Australia for tradeshows like Australia Tourism Exchange and Corroboree Asia to give them an opportunity to experience the destination first-hand, giving insights and updates about new experiences and destinations during the annual trade event, India Travel Mission to allow agents to connect with the representatives from the Australian tourism industry. Tourism Australia also invests in cooperative marketing campaigns with its key distribution partners to build destination awareness and promotion of new products, experiences and destinations.

This year, our focus is to promote the culinary diversity of Germany and endorse the destination as a hub for travellers looking to savour new experiences. It is known that experiencing the local flavours helps enhance the flavour of any holiday and makes for everlasting impressions. With over 5,000 beers from 1,300 breweries, 300 types of bread, 1,500 types of sausage, 13 wine regions, 292 Michelin-starred restaurants and 3,000 to 5,000 Christmas markets, Germany is sure to satiate any traveller’s appetite,” says Theophilus.

From ‘Pannfisch’ fried fish in the north to green sauce and ‘Bratwurst’ sausages in Central Germany to dumplings, ‘Maultaschen’ pasta pockets and ‘Eisbein’ ham hock in the South- German, the country’s cuisine is as diverse as the countries varied landscape. When asked about engaging the travel partners in the promotions, Theophilus said that culinary tours are

already part of the packaging of many leading tour operators. He added that the travel trade will get to discuss the culinary destinations and the ways to package them with German DMCs at the forthcoming German Travel Mart (GTM).

When asked about India as a source market for Destination Germany, Theophilus highlights, “Indians have been and continue to be one of the strongest source markets for us from India. With the disposable income of Indians ever increasing, the spends on holidays have increased as well. As the number of globetrotting Indian tourists swells year-on-year, Czech Tourist Authority is ramping up its presence in the India market.

Highlighting the niche and unique offerings, Khambatta says, “Besides the scenic beauty and history, the Czech Republic offers various experiences such as beer spa, glass – blowing, wine tasting that the visitors can cherish. This summer, we are looking at introducing the South Moravian region of the Czech Republic, which includes places like Brno and the stunning Lednice-Valtice Complex which blooms with flowers in this season.”

As the industry professionals observed that with the rise in incomes of Indian travellers, the travel preferences have seemed to change a lot. While few of the time-tested destinations have become passé for Indians, places like the Czech Republic still continue

to top the bucket list. Khambatta enlightens, “The Indian traveller spends approximately 30 per cent above the average in comparison to other visitors, at a total amount of more than CZK 4,000 per person per day. The growth in Indian tourists to the Czech Republic has been increasingly driven on thematic packages such as wine tourism, spa tourism and pristine nature stays.”

He continues, “We are promoting the country as an affordable premium destination targeting families and those well-traveled FITs in the age group of 25 to 45 years, who are looking at customised holiday experience. We are also targeting MICE segment, which has a huge potential in India. Several Bollywood movies have been shot in the Czech Republic showcasing the natural beauty of the central European country. We realise that cinema is a very good medium to promote tourism and are hoping to collaborate with more production brands in the future.”

As the destination is witnessing a steady growth

in Indian tourist arrivals, year-on-year, the Tourist Authority is gearing up to woo the India market with its captivating appeal. In 2017, 85,680 Indians visited the Czech Republic for an average length of three to four days. “We are looking at welcoming 1, 00,000 Indian visitors to the Czech Republic, perhaps before 2020,” Khambatta shares with the hint of a smile.

“We are trying to increase the awareness about the destination to the travel trade through our various promotional activities like multi-city roadshows, sales visits and trainings, familiarisation trips and jointcoops with various travel agents. In India, we want to gradually expand our promotions in the big cities.

Last year, we targeted markets in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. This year we are adding Ahmedabad to the list. In 2019, we will then expand our promotions to Kolkata, Hyderabad and Chennai. After which we may look to penetrate deeper to tier II cities,” he concludes.

While Tourism Malaysia has been popularising its unexplored destinations like Ipoh, Gopeng, Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu through product presentations, TM New Delhi is in discussion with various tour operators and airlines for the promotional activities and joint promotions to cater different segments. “We are also emphasising on tour operators to develop a package on ‘Explore Multiple Destinations in Malaysia’ by road through short trip,” says Suip. “We received 552,739 tourist

arrivals from India last year and almost 30 per cent visited Malaysia during the summer period. This year, during summer, we hope to see a 30 per cent growth,” he adds.

Eyeing the high-spending Indian globetrotter, several countries are now laying out the red carpet for them by simplifying the visa process. Giving the good news for Indian travellers, Suip smiles and shares, “I would like to mention that we will continue to create a hassle-free environment for Indian tourists to visit Malaysia to spend their holiday. The visa waiver program or eNTRI introduced last year will be extended for another year. Apart from that, the multiple entry eVISA facilities are also available for the Indian tourists who are planning to make Malaysia as their hub to visit several destinations within the region.”

them well acquainted with the destination. We keep the tour operators and travel associations updated on all the latest happenings in the archipelago through social media as well.”

Further, Sondhi seems confident in believing that with the launch of direct non-stop flight from Mumbai to Denpasar by Garuda Indonesia and free Visa on Arrival (VoA) for Indian tourists would give a fillip to the rising number of Indian tourists to Indonesia.

“Peak summer holiday season witnessed about 150K visitors in the past summer. In 2018 we look forward to about 20 per cent increase,” he adds. In what will come as good news for Indian holidaymakers, especially honeymooning couples, Garuda Indonesia has launched a direct flight between Mumbai and Denpasar. The seven-hour flight, the first non-stop one between the countries is expected to bring in more Indian influx.

Therefore, for us, it is very important to understand their preference and their needs. We are very keen to get our share of this potential market and Indian agencies are also very eager to know about the Jordan. Last summer 30,000 Indians visited Jordan. SMOOTH SUMMER SAILING FOR SHARJAH Sharjah has always been a beacon for numerous cultural enthusiasts, travelling from India. Being one of the popular holiday destinations in the GCC region, a lot of Indian travellers visit the city to explore its heritage sites, mosques and beautiful museums.

In the advent of summer raising the barometer, the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) seems confident of Indian arrivals to the destination, this summer season.

Recently, the authority (SCTDA) utilised SATTE’s popularity to enhance the emirate’s brand and profile in major markets and cities worldwide as well as achieve growth in terms of the number of international tourist arrivals in 2018 and in the coming years. 2017 was a good year for Sharjah Tourism as the destination recorded a total of 138,000 Indian travellers.

“SCTDA had done a number of activities in 2017 to attract more and more Indian travellers to

Sharjah, this summer. It launched a four-week radio campaign in India and also spearheaded workshops and roadshows, encircling four Indian cities. It maintained a strong presence in the tourism market with participation in SATTE and by attending all the key DMC roadshows in India in addition to consistently building on our relationship with the major tour operators in the top 10 metropolitan cities,” adds Lokhandwala.

She continues saying, “Sharjah has emerged as a best weekend getaway destination for Indians as Air Arabia, Sharjah-headquartered budget airline, now fly from 13 destinations throughout India. The airline operates 112 flights between Sharjah and India every week and has offices in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Mumbai, Nagpur and Thriuvananthapuram.” India has emerged as the fourth largest market for international visitors

to Sharjah and the emirate has driven ongoing marketing campaigns targeting India’s outbound tourism over the past few years.

When asked about mounting success of any preferred destination, Lokhandwala is of the opinion that engagement with travel agents and tour operator is a must when it comes to selling tourism offerings of any place. “Sharjah has deep connections with travel companies, PAN India, that sell itineraries of the destination. From DMCs like Lama Tours, Royal Arabian to wholesalers such as TBO, Holiday merchant and Sahibji Travels, all are well aware of the destination and they sell it to Indian travellers PAN India,” she added. SCTDA is keen to strengthen relations with the India market by organising roadshows in Indian cities in combination with workshops and meetings with major tourism agencies, resulting in agreements on the exchange of tourism between the two destinations.

In March this year, Destination NSW held the 2018 Focus On India workshop which aimed to encourage more Indian travellers to book a trip to NSW.” Destination NSW will continue to leverage marketing and partnership campaigns to promote visitation to Sydney and regional NSW. It also maintains partnerships with leading online travel agencies including Make My Trip, Ezeego1, Expedia and Cox and Kings. Plus, the added advantage of direct flights of Air India from Delhi to Sydney is expected to result in an extra 13,300 inbound seats per year,

estimated to be worth USD2.6 million.

“India has been NSW’s fastest growing inbound tourism market over the past five years and shows no signs of slowing. Since the year ended December 2012, the number of Indian visitors to NSW has grown by 121 per cent. From December 2017 through until February 2018, Sydney welcomed 36,200 visitors from India, a growth of 11 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. Based on this growth, we estimate around 41,600 Indian visitors will travel to Sydney during the 2018/19 Summer months,” Chipchase shares the positive picture.

“More Indians are coming here for their honeymoons, to see our 14 NSW wine regions first hand and to participate in and enjoy major events and festival. Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas, is a major drawcard for Indian visitors and last year more than 6,700 Vivid Sydney travel packages were sold to Indian visitors,” she adds.

Later in the year, we will visit tier I cities with our annual roadshow where 20 Swiss suppliers will join us. The legendary Bürgenstock Resort & Spa has also reopened after extensive renovation. Overlooking Lake Lucerne, it features four hotels, amazing alpine spa, extensive conference and event facilities as well as 12 restaurants including one which caters for Indian food and one of the best views in Central Switzerland,” Sharma further highlights.

As 2017 has been a year of growth for Switzerland Tourism with 23.4 per cent increase in overnight generated out of India, first indications from the travel trade for 2018 look quite promising. “We look forward to another record year,” Sharma concludes on a high note.

It was Coco Collection’s first FAM trip where they hosted key travel agents from Delhi to showcase their properties which include Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu and Coco Bodu Hithi.

The objective of this FAM trip was for agents to enhance their knowledge of the Coco properties and experience “Maldives ... the sunny side of life” personally. It would enable them to further promote and sell the Coco Collection more effectively.

The FAM trip was conducted in April’18 with participants such as Yatra. com, Rising Star, Yorker Holidays, Destyasia, Venus Holidays, Travstarz, Orange Tourism, Aabee Holidays. A special itinerary allowed the agents to experience the many different facilities and unique excursions on offer. The group got the opportunity to experience the truly luxurious and relaxing Maldivian hospitability, which is synonymous with Coco Collection.

Kindly give us a brief about The Small Maldives Island Co (TSMIC) and its management.

The Small Maldives Island Company has been working with local owners specifically CHR, which started the first resorts in the Maldives, over 50 years ago and has now invested in a lot of new resorts. Our company focuses on developing, managing and positioning resorts only in the Maldives. The resorts are homegrown and compete well in the luxury sector.

We have several properties, of various levels, in the luxury sector. Being a specialist of this sector, our company intends to break the segment down and work with key partners of international levels to sell our resorts and on the ground, work with the locals to understand the local needs and make our services more special. We have noticed that over the last 20 years, other luxury brand names have come to the Maldives to position themselves, in a global sense but couldn’t deliver to the fullest as the local suppliers in the Maldives were already in good terms with us over time. In other words, even though you are a big brand, in the Maldives it is all the right kind of service and deliverance that bring profiteering business for the owner and investors to the table. That is where the Small Maldives Island Company exists and outshines other big brands delivering luxury in the Maldives.

With our kind of ideologies, we, as an island company, have some great future opportunities focused only on the Maldives.

What makes Amilla Fushi, Huvafen Fushi and Finolhu different from the other Maldivian resorts? How are they providing the unique and bespoke luxury experiences to the guests?

Our beach properties consist of the cultural essence of Maldives. Breaking down our DNA into four elements, each resort has its own individuality and

traits that define the property. Huvafen Fushi has been positioned at the premium luxury sector for couples only. On the property, we are doing everything to accentuate what a couple experiences about romance and reconnection. We have an overwater Japanese restaurant, spectacular villas with swimming pools coming and in and out of the room allowing a very romantic experience of a premium luxury resort.

Amilla’s client base, on the other hand, focuses on families, chic as well as honeymoon couples together experiencing some of the most spectacular villas on the island. This combination works because of the scale of the island and great space for activities. When it comes to families, Amilla Fushi does a great job in the residences segment. Our residences of four, six and eight–bedroom cover multi-generation of families as well as big scale group.

Finholu has a specific accent of the bygone retro days of the 60s and 70s’ era when the travelling was simple and more fun was associated with it.

We want to recreate that idea in the Maldives. In a saturated market of the Maldives with over 120 resorts, operating, another pool villa or an overwater restaurant wouldn’t grab many customers. So, we have gone out to the market with a unique element of retro experience reflecting pastel colours along with programmed restaurants and acrobats, delivering and accentuating uniqueness. Finholu stands out with its personality. All the three resorts are in the five-star, luxury market but we have dissected according to our clientele’s needs of what a family may want or what a premium couple seeks from a resort.

We would always be evolving, fine-tuning, creating and innovating all our resorts.

What key changes have you observed in the luxury hospitality market in the Maldives and

how has the sector grown over the past few years?

It has definitely grown and evolved dramatically in the last 15 years and definitely, there has been a growth of products in the leading five-star market.

The all-inclusive five-star luxury market has become a big driver and that is also because of the saturation.

The price-points are matching the volume in the Maldives. The premium luxury sector has grown as well and new players are coming up for competition.

And our properties are capable enough to stand out in the market. We see a future of Maldives’ hospitality to grow further and it will separate further into a true premium luxury, true luxury and all-inclusive five-star segments. These three categories of fivestars would really start to characterise themselves in the market. Right now, it is a bit clouded situation between luxury, all-inclusive five star and a luxury five-star that is not all-inclusive. The price-points are similar whereas services aren’t, that will separate. In the next 18 months, we will see around 2000 hotels rooms coming on board and some big brands coming up and even more in the coming five years. With the expansion of the new runway which allows planes to land in every six minutes, has a possibility of tripling the current tourist influx to the Maldives.

Last year, the total influx to the Maldives was 1.2 million and it is estimated to grow to over five million over the next five to six years. Number of rooms in the Maldives is already yet growing and airlift is, certainly, a significant factor for this apparent growth now. We see the future of Maldives’ tourism and hospitality to certainly grow at a fast pace. It is a start of a bridging period for the next level growth of Maldives as a tourism destination and 2020 would be huge, the year where we would start seeing a major separation in luxury sector, in that aspect.

is another segment that we may look into for tapping more Indians. But it’s tough. We need more help!

I think we would like to further partner and find people to come onboard to connect for our three individual resorts. Spreading the word out to the India market is our prime objective now. We are yet to crack that egg! Getting the word out has to happen with aggressive marketing and PR positioning as we recently had some prominent celebrity attention in our properties. Recently, we had Bollywood’s Salman Khan celebrate his birthday in our resort. Other than that, we always receive a good network of celebrities from the UK and US market including names such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Moss, Kate Winslet, Naomi Campbell and Kara de Levine.

We have also got some amazing new products, for instance, one of our most stunning resorts in the Maldives; Huvafen Fushi just launched a two-storey, two bedrooms, “PlayPen” which is claimed to be the largest suites in the Maldives focused for our premium luxury customers. I would want to believe that there is a specific market in India that would be highly attracted to this product. We really want to shout out loud about this newly launched product.

Are you looking at India as a potential market?

What are the current footfalls from the region to the resorts?

We are looking into the India market for the last 15 years and constantly working on ways to engage and attract more travellers from the country. One of the biggest concerns for us is a good quality airlift.

The traffic would become easier and greater in number if we get to have some more connectivity and engagements of big airline brands. We believe that we have many ideal products for Indian premium luxury market. Witnessing visits of many Indians customers coming to our properties in the past, we would now want to have some Indian weddings too. Honeymoon

Any development plans for the resorts in the pipeline?

Focusing on our current three properties, The Small Maldives Island Company would want to focus on positioning them as much-preferred spots in the Maldives. We would be navigating through this growth period, focusing on and consolidating our current assets and looking forward to more development.

In the properties, we have so much going on to consolidate and we would look over that in the next two years.

As a captain of the ship, how do you keep your team motivated? Are there any training programmes undertaken to keep them encouraged?

As a leader, I definitely focus on training and development as the part of our core. We have development programs running on individual subjects.

We also invest a lot of energy on our team at the top level with a special focus on the General Managers and HR team, better known as the Strategic Team, and broaden the responsibility of managing the resorts and make individuals the voice of business. However, the leader has to lead and set an example, I am, therefore, active and vigilant and motivate bi-weekly gatherings to broaden the perspective of managing the resorts for more profit and creative business.

What according to you makes a great leader?

What is your success mantra?

It is a combination of understanding on the ground and sensitising the relation with the team. Position the product as it should be positioned and identifying the right and resourceful people to enlarge the team.

My skill has always been to constantly rework and reinvent to keep things moving. Understand the skills and positioning the people in the correct position in the team and strengthen the emotional connect with my people.

The Indian traveller is now open to experimenting and cruise liners are going all out to woo their customers by offering customised itineraries. However, a common belief about cruising being an expensive product may be turning some clients off. Dispelling these myths can persuade them that cruising is the right choice. But who can help? To get an in-depth analysis, we spoke to the cruise experts on how travel agencies can play an important role in driving sales through right knowledge and personalisation

TravelScapes About 30 years ago, a cruise ship usually sailed to sun-drenched parts of the globe like the Mediterranean or the Caribbean. Today, you can take a cruise to almost any part of the world including Alaska, the Caribbean, Hawaii, the Mediterranean, South East Asia and the Mexican Riviera. There are hundreds of ships and many more waterways from which to choose. Indeed, the breadth and scope of cruising itineraries are mind-boggling.

The Cruise Lines International Association recently forecasted better than five per cent passenger growth for 2018 to reach a projected 27.2 million passengers worldwide. That comes after four per cent passenger growth in 2017 and an increase of over 20 per cent between 2011 and 2016. To meet the ongoing demand, more ships are scheduled to set sail in 2018. According to the service providers, the growth in demand for cruise tourism from Indian travellers over the past years has been significant and they expect a further jump in bookings in coming years. The Indian traveller today, is extremely different from the one that the tourism industry dealt with a few years ago.

Talking about the changing preferences, Kishan Biyani, Managing Director, Ark Travels explains, “Cruising in the older days was restricted to a saying, ‘Cruising is for newlywed or nearly dead’; this maxim has changed over past three decades.

The internet age has set new limits for client’s preferences. They have become more open while making choices and bargaining at the same time. Also, Indian cruisers which were known as low spender onboard a cruise has changed over past couple of years.

On an average, an Indian traveller spends USD70 on board the cruise ship. Cruise Industry Consumer Outlook report also states that five out of 10 potential travellers are interested in taking an ocean cruise, while three out of 10 potential travellers are likely to go on a river cruise. Which means, the demographics and cruise pattern of avid cruisers are changing very fast. Fly-cruise is still a popular option encouraging couples/families, senior citizens, corporates and MICE to plan their next vacations. The figures fly-cruise tourism has exponentially shot up in last five years from India.”

Sharing similar opinion, Ratna Chadha, Chief Executive, TIRUN, exclusive India representative of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd says, “Long duration cruises and exotic destinations are more popular with travellers and as they embark upon more cruises, travellers are also becoming brand-conscious, i.e. they are emphatically putting across their preference of cruise liners.

All three of our cruise brands, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises sail through exotic, offbeat destinations. Guests have also become more comfortable with these cruise liners as they trust the brand name and can travel with a sense of comfort and security as they do not face any challenge of food, language or culture.”

She further adds, “Asia is on a growth trajectory by the virtue of being an unexplored cruise destination; therefore, cruising is all set to grow here. Looking at the high desire among Indians to cruise, the Indian government has actively participated in popularising Indian cruise tourism. Their focused efforts at introducing various support measures such as opening new ports and introducing port based projects have renewed the emphasis on cruise tourism. It will definitely attract international tourists while simultaneously encouraging more domestic travellers to opt for cruise holidays to experience the rich heritage and diversity of our country.”

“Earlier, the Indian cruise traveller would look at destinations closer to home. In keeping with this, Singapore, Hong Kong was extremely popular places to visit. However, this phenomenon has seen a positive shift with holiday seekers looking beyond these countries. The evolved traveller is well researched and is open to exploring new geographies. There has been a significant shift of Indians opting for seven to eight-night itineraries as opposed to four to five-night itineraries. We have seen this trend across different age groups. Realising the potential the Indian market has, cruise liners are constantly upgrading and offering unique

experiences. With the development of better infrastructure and the growing ecosystem of cruising in India, cruise tourism is soon becoming an attractive segment to look forward to in the future,” highlights Manoj Singh, Country Head - India, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. Keeping in sync with Singh, Kunal Sampat, General Manager India, MSC Cruises says, “We see an Indian traveller evolving slowly and steadily leading to repeat clients, choosing long duration cruise holidays from the traditional three to four nights.

Also, the demand has been on a rise for Mediterranean sailings as compared to previous years.”

Citing cruising as one of the preferred avenues for Indian travellers Naresh Rawal, Vice President – Sales, Genting Cruise Lines shares how the outbound cruise tourism from India has been growing at a steady pace year-on-year. “The Indian traveller has evolved from shorter itineraries to longer ones, moving from regular cruising to experiencing luxury cruising.

There has been an evolution in the cabin category as well.

Where they were earlier choosing Inside Staterooms, now we are witnessing a higher demand for Balcony cabins and Suite Cabins to a ‘ship within ship concepts’ are getting widely accepted. More and more people are choosing cruises because it is an all-inclusive package which not only takes care of the stay but also includes meals, entertainment and covering various destinations at the same price,” he emphasises.

Nishith Saxena, Founder & Director, Cruise Professionals observes that the demand for more experiential cruising is going to be high as people now are willing to go out of their comfort zone to experience the things that are offbeat. “As Indian travellers are evolving, there are more and more refined choices being made when it comes to the cruising destination, as also with regard to the type of cabins and kind of ship one would like to sail on. This trend is more visible in metros where passengers have gone for at least one cruise and have liked the experience.

Going forward, we are anticipating distinct patterns emerging for masses and for classes. Both these segments of passengers have their own peculiarities when it comes to deciding which cruise to go on. While cost plays a very important role in the first segment, it is the life-enrichment experience that attracts the second segment.”

It is, therefore clear, without a question that the growth story of Indian travellers opting for cruises continues on a right trajectory, creating a positive impact on the global economy. However, for a first-time traveller or a budget-centric tourist, a common perception still prevails that cruising is purely a luxury holiday and an expensive product not everyone could afford. Are they educated about the product correctly?

SPECIAL FOCUS CRUISES DEBUNKING THE MYTHS It is true that cruise travel was earlier looked upon as a luxurious experience, one that could probably put a dent in your pocket.

The delusion was and is still there that cruising, is an extension of a land holiday and Indians, being the budget-centric travellers do not specifically opt for a cruise-only vacation. “Marketers and travel providers need to recognise the fact that cruising is not only about extravagant, luxurious experiences. A cruise offers an allinclusive holiday and provides an array of services and amenities that make it more cost-effective than a land holiday. Travellers should also consider the fact that while the difference in packages might reflect in individual rooms and facilities chosen according to their preferences and budget, the entire ship’s amenities are open for everybody to utilise,” Chadha explains.

Biyani feels though there are shifts in trends and one may be wrong in saying today that cruising is an expensive option but the Indian travellers still consider it to be an unaffordable choice. “A Cruise Industry Consumer Outlook report stated 67 per cent of the cruisers say that cruising offers a high-value experience for the money as compared to land packages. Which means, with the marketing of cruising products through online and offline activities, the stakeholders have tried and dispelled the myth of cruising as an expensive product. All the factors like cruising being an all-inclusive product have also helped to break the myth. But misconception does prevail in a price sensitive market like India where even 100 ml coke is being sold with certain discounts. The challenge always is to bring discounted cruise itineraries,” he highlights.

Saxena, further illustrates that it’s quite easy to dispel the myth as according to him, cruises have more choices of accommodations than in most of the hotels that one could select an option that suits the taste and preferences. “Simply speaking, a cruise is the most balanced and affordable vacation package which exists in the travel business, keeping in mind the inclusions for passengers,” he accentuates.

However, with the increasing incomes and right knowledge about the product, the time seems to have changed now. Rawal couldn’t agree more when he says that the perception of cruising is changing, more and more people are choosing this as an integral part of their vacation plan. According to him, no other option is as viable as cruising as it is more cost-effective in comparison to land

Today, there is an itinerary or cruise ship to suit every kind of travel making it an ideal holiday preference. We have, in fact, witnessed a considerable number of passengers booking their holidays in advance to suit their specific requirements,” Talking about the personalised services, Sampat recounts, “It is a very common myth about cruising that it is only for the elite.

TRAVEL AGENTS, THE GATEKEEPERS TO OPENING UP OPPORTUNITIES People say, with agents comes wisdom. Travel agencies can play a significant role in retailing the product through in-depth product knowledge, providing a highly personalised service and developing relationships with clients directly. Even clients who love cruising may not choose to cruise every year. While they may have absolutely loved their Mediterranean cruise last year, for next year, they may desire to instead book an escorted tour or Las Vegas city stay this year. It is, therefore, imperative for agents to understand their client’s needs and make them the repeat customers by their revolutionary new ways to sell the cruise packages. But how will they keep evolving? The answer is, of course, motivation, encouragement to sell the product and proper training.

Biyani, Rawal and Singh are of a belief that to maintain healthy relations with the trade partners, it is extremely important to keep them encouraged and engaged. Initiatives such as regular roadshows, B2B connects, webinar, detailed ship brochures online and offline programmes backed by sales mission, participation at travel exhibitions, various certifications and cruise familiarisation trips are taken to and handhold the travel agents from across the country.

Singh further reiterates, “Engagement with our travel partners is an ongoing process. It is imperative that they understand the product completely to be well equipped in managing customers who are inclined towards taking a cruise holiday. To ensure a constant flow of information, we organised our Product Training seminars in more than 25 Cities in 2017/2018. We have a strong web-based online portal for travel agents called Norwegian Central. Through the portal, travel agents can learn how to book any of our cruises, research and use promotional tools and more.

This makes it easy for travel agents to successfully sell our brand and also acts as a feedback channel for partners to connect with us.”

Keeping in mind the preferences of a customer and the role of a travel agent in bringing sales efficiency to a cruise business, Saxena shares, “With over 40 airlines, 50 hotel companies, numerous DMC’s, insurance companies and cruise companies knocking on the doors of the travel agents every day, it is challenging task to acquire and provide information to clients for decision making very quickly and correctly. However, most agents understand the business and are constantly trying to educate themselves. On our part, in addition to regular sales visits, in-house presentations and educational EDM’s, we ran a series of three webinars for 2018 cruise offerings – this was very well received by the trade and the engagement level was extremely high.”

educate and engage with the travel agent through the year, but, it is also true that unless travel agents don’t promote the cruises regularly, the client’s confidence would remain shaky when it comes to buying cruises.

We need to remember that in current scenario, the consumer is the king and he is spoilt for choices. Also, as a part of jointly celebrating Cruise Professionals 10th Anniversary, we have come up with an incentive plan for travel agents for all of their FIT bookings where they get an extra incentive on all the booking done in this year and we are happy that this offer has been able to encourage our travel agents to sell our products in higher numbers,” he further reveals.

Sampat informs that for MSC Cruises, the trade partners are extremely important too and the company ensures that all of them are regularly updated on MSC as a product by means of training programs, one-to-one meetings, social media engagements, broadcast messages and more. “We have recently introduced a bonus program for our key trade partners to entice them on selling MSC more aggressively. We are in process of developing an e-learning platform which will be then shared with the trade partners to enhance their knowledge with a fun element attached to the same. Along with the same, we have also conducted the first ever FAM trip for them from West India and are looking forward to creating more such opportunities in the future,” he shares.

THE WAY FORWARD Sharing a different side of the picture, Chadha rightly points out that the trade partners are somewhere lacking the influencing power to facilitate the decisions of their clients. The customers today, possess a vast amount of knowledge and need very little influence in decision making. Therefore, it is the need of the hour for the trade partners/agencies to surpass this knowledge and equip themselves to become influencers rather than facilitators. “While a first-hand cruise experience is always a better option for the trade partners, virtual walkthroughs and online courses also have a great impact. In fact, trade partners can take the online course at their leisure. Even we offer online courses from top universities and at the end of the course, trade partners receive the certificate of a certified partner. Trade partners, however, are indifferent to these online courses and want the information to be crystallised and provided to them in a readymade manner. While first-hand knowledge definitely helps to promote the offerings, a proactive trade partner can definitely use the

By Gagneet Kaur With 1.4 million Indian tourists visiting Thailand in 2017, an increase of 18 per cent over the previous year, what are the targets for this year in terms of number of tourists from India?

According to the latest target announced by TAT Governor, we would like to welcome two million Indian tourists by 2020. Therefore, our average YoY growth from 2018 to 2020 should be 15 per cent at the minimum. And by the end of 2018 we hope to have around 1.61 million tourists from India.

TAT’s new campaign “Open to the new shades of Thailand” aims to pay more attention to unique local experiences. Tell us more about what is in store for the visitors.

“Open to the New Shades of Thailand” is the concept that can fit well with Gen Y and Millennial tourists who would like to design their own trip with a personalised selection of Mix and Match options. Local Thai experience that TAT intends to offer under this marketing concept includes Thai Gastronomy, Nature & Beach, Arts & Craft, Thai Culture, and Way of Life. New products for Gastronomy that TAT would recommend is the Michelin starred restaurants in Bangkok and many other fine dining restaurants to tasty street food that tourist can find in Bangkok. For Nature and Beach, this year we are promoting new destination in the East coast of Thailand further than Pattaya. After this mega FAM trip, we’ll do some product presentation and agents training in Tier II and Tier III cities to give increase awareness to the agents about the destinations in Thailand.

This will help us get some new customers who are depending on agents’ recommendation when they plan for a holiday. We also create awareness about new destinations and tourism activities to general public and FIT tourists through our blog www.tourismthailand.in and social media platforms such as Facebook : TourismAuthorityofThailandMumbai, Instagram : @tatmumbai and twitter : @ tatmumbai. We also encourage travel agents to do a joint promotion campaign with us to add the unexplored destinations in their itinerary.

Is TAT planning to tap any new segment of travellers from India, this year?

What are your planning and promotional strategies for attracting them?

Yes, we would like to look for new segments such as health and wellness tourism and sports tourism. But it seems to be a bit difficult to reach the real target customers since it’s a very niche market and India also seems to be the destination for health and wellness by itself. For sport tourism segment, we try to focus on promoting the event like Pattaya Marathon and Phuket Marathon together with some partners as well as for golf segment.

What are your strategies for engaging repeat visitors of all segments? What percentage of the total covers this segment of tourists visiting Thailand?

Thailand has more repeat visitors than first time visitors from overall international tourist arrivals as well as from India. The proportion of repeater VS first time visitor is 60:40. So it’s a challenge to engage repeat visitors of all segments.

What I think it’s very important for Thailand at the moment is to maintain the quality of natural environment and tourism resources in our country since we are tremendously depending on natural attractions such as islands and beaches as well as national parks. Therefore, we have to take good care of these resources and have a sustainable way to manage them. Apart from that we need to promote second tier cities to repeat visitors to explore something new in Thailand. We also encourage repeat visitors to try some activities or local Thai experiences that they may not have done before such as Thai cooking class, Thai massage, Thai boxing so they can have more engagement and knowledge when they visit Thailand.

Indian travellers are more in demand and are an eagerly awaited inbound for most destinations. In our association with tourism boards of different countries, we can easily notice the huge demand that is laid out for Indian visitors. Investments that the tourism boards make are a good-value investment since Indian outbound has rewarded such tourism boards, positively. Indians are also established as good spenders and the power of personal promotion is huge.

To help the traveller plan, an agency plays a significant role.

A travel agency and its efficiency, particularly working under pressure is what agencies used to. From the very planning to

delivery and importantly, the visa documentation and timely follow up, makes an agency’s role crucial to the success of the travel. Travellers are now spending plenty of time on the internet but it is still believed that the right agency and consultant is far more practical and apt than what a traveller can expect from the net. As an outbound market, WTO’s prediction on Indian outbound is to be taken seriously. It is not the numbers that must draw our attention but the very impact Indian outbound has created that made WTO predict on Indian and its multiplier effect, as far as outbound is concerned. Indian outbound will surely continue to dominate India tourism and the huge market will certainly turn as the cynosure of global tourism.

Starting from legal to social to religious to systemic norms, all are important for a traveller to know. Once they know about them, they don’t have to have their attention on it or go through surprises. Our travellers become brand ambassadors of our country also.

An agent plays a significant role in this aspect by handing over the do’s and don’ts sheet to his customers and the best will be to spend some time with the passengers to go through the sheet. It is like selling a self-drive package to someone and letting them know about traffic rules and etiquettes.

Religious norms are important to know to avoid offending someone. Like during Ramadan, the host country may have flexible rules for tourist but it is best to respect them and follow the rules, especially in public. The countries which impose stricter visa norms will open borders for Indians without any restriction and Indian traveller will experience being respected in the other countries. This, in turn, will set another achievable milestone in the number of Indians travelling overseas beyond 50 million after 2020. Indians are great spenders too which attracts other nationalities to look up to us.

Most of the renowned companies do have a defined procedure for such sensitisation. Since this is more relevant to GIT travellers, as compared to FIT, the travel companies, as a plan of action, arrange pre-departure meetings for the entire group, few days prior, where they not only discuss the entire trip in detail but also make the travellers aware of the do’s & don’ts in the countries that they are going to visit.

By virtue of the fact, that most FIT passengers are well travelled, the agent in a private discussion with them normally

briefs them about safety and security issues, pitfalls that need to be avoided, tipping norms and other such advice.

Environmental concerns, including littering, minimising the use of plastic and avoiding over-crowding are also becoming crucial issues. These days the agents also advise their customers to visit the websites of various countries and do some private research before they actually go on their trips.

However, a new level of consciousness has emerged around these areas of social behaviour and things have improved substantially. As customers travel frequently and experience other parts of the world, these problems will wane and eventually get eliminated.

However, the ever-increasing significance of the Indian outbound for the whole world also gives us the opportunity to create brand ambassadors of every visitor from our country. We should talk about this a lot more and sensitise our customers so that they enjoy a better experience without any rough edges and discomfort.

We need to make them aware that while visiting a foreign country and learning about new cultures can definitely be exciting, but every traveller should know how important it is

to be aware and follow the traditions and customs of the host destinations, especially when it comes to spiritual ceremonies.

It’s important to always display proper travel etiquette.

Playing dumb can backfire – nobody wants to be ‘that guy’ who’s ruining a solemn event, or worse, making headlines because they broke some rule they ‘were not aware of’. It’s all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T. There are even considerations to keep in mind when attending spiritual ceremonies during a holiday.

As an outbound tour operator, I would like to go to the next trade show and tell my business associates that an Indian tourist is responsible and disciplined and I then, hope to see a positive response, not a surprise.

By Sayanti Halder The 10th edition of GITB, hosted in Jaipur from April 22 to 24, 2018, ended with an overwhelming response from the foreign tour operators. The ‘buyers’ and ‘sellers’ from both international as well as Indian market expressed great satisfaction on account of almost 11,000 meetings held over a span of two days. Over the years, GITB has emerged as one of the most important travel marts for inbound tourism, witnessing fruitful networking and adding further boost to the travel trade business in the nation.

The travel trade fair of business and opportunities concluded with a biosphere of more progress and recognition for India’s inbound tourism industry.

The inaugural session was hosted at Hotel Lalit Jaipur on April 22 while the pre-structured meetings and exhibitions were held on April 23 and 24, respectively, at the Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Center (JECC) in Sitapura. The evening of inauguration was graced by Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje who was also the Chief Guest for the inaugural event along with the Guest of Honour, K.J. FEEL SACRED AT BHADRACHALAM TEMPLE Bhadrachalam, a town in the Bhadradri district of Telangana and also known as the ‘Ayodhya of South India’, is an important Hindu pilgrimage town. With an existence of the glorious Bhadrachalam Temple of Lord Rama, situated on the banks of Godavari River, Bhadrachalam acts as the jewel of religious sites in the south. EXPERIENCE ENORMITY AT KOILSAGAR DAM Located at the Koilsagar Village of the Deverakadra Mandal in Mahabubnagar district is the mighty Koilsagar Dam, which is one of the famous tourist attractions of Telangana. It is a medium size irrigation project constructed at a cost of INR 80 crore during Nizam government period during 1945-48. The proposal to construct a dam was put forward by the British rulers to collect and store the excess water in catchment area of the Krishna River for irrigation purposes, meeting needs of about 12,000 acres. The Koilsagar Dam is located about 12 km from the Devarakonda Mandal that head quarters in between Mahaboobnagar and Raichur. Constructed in a picturesque location between two mountains on Peddavagu River, this man-made miracle amidst the profuse nature, Koilsagar Dam boasts a breathtaking view and memories to cherish it forever.

EXPERIENCE ECO-TOURISM AT MAYURI NURSERY Mayuri Central Plant Nursery is all set to boost the eco-tourism in Telangana. IATO 2018 Elections concluded with an optimistic shift The biennial elections of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), the apex body of tour operators in India, held at Hotel Ashok, New Delhi on April 23 had fair amount of surprises when votes were counted by the Returning Officer, Akshay Kumar. Although, key Managing Committee members were elected unopposed even before the elections, key challengers EM Najeeb for Senior Vice President and Rajesh Mudgill for the Hony Secretary are seated in the same line with the elected committee members beating Amaresh Tiwari and Rajeev Kohli, respectively. The voting saw both new and old members being elected for its Executive Committee.

Rajesh Mudgill, Managing Director, Planet India Travels, with a total of 168 votes, made an entry as the Hony. Secretary of IATO. At the same time, EM Najeeb, Managing Director, ATE Group won his current position of Sr. Vice President with a small margin of 163 votes, in total. Pronab Sarkar (Swagatam Tours), Rajiv Mehra (Uday Tours and Travels), Rajnish Kaistha (Paradise Holidays) and Ravi Gosain (Erco Travels) were elected unopposed as the President, Vice President, Joint Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.

Jet Airways unveils ‘JetUpgrade’ for confirmed passengers

J

et Airways has launched ‘JetUpgrade’ for guests holding confirmed Economy or Premiere bookings of the airline to bid for an upgrade to Premiere or First Class, respectively. Launched in collaboration with PlusGrade, ‘JetUpgrade’ has been made available across the airline’s entire network of 65 domestic and international destinations, and on all flights operated by it.

To avail an upgrade, interested guests can place a bid on the Jet Airways’ website under the “Manage My Booking” section, stating the amount they’re willing to bid for the upgrade. Bidding opens at least 7 days prior to the flight’s departure date and closes 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. In the interim, guests can modify, or even cancel their bids. However, they will not be able to withdraw their bid, once the bid is accepted as per the defined timelines.

ccording to the reports, Goa is set to receive a major expansion and facelift with two world-class airports coming up to cater to the growing air traffic.

Enhancing the tourism and economic potential of the state, airport infrastructure in Goa is gearing up to receive a major expansion and facelift with two world-class airports, one at Dabolim and the second being developed in Mopa. Both airports in Goa have the potential to grow as they are at two different locations, one in the north and another in the southern side of the state.

The Government of India had approved the proposal of the Government of Goa for continuation of civilian operations at Dabolim Civil Aviation Enclave, even after the commissioning of new international airport at Mopa.

AAI under International Civil Aviation Organizations’ theme of ‘No Country Left Behind’ is targeting Air Navigation Service Providers and Airport Operators worldwide by sharing its comprehensive e-data gathering, Invoicing and Collection solution ie. SkyRev360. Many countries have shown keen interest in SkyRev360. Very recently, AAI has won a

global bid at Laos and implementation of SkyRev360 is under process. S. Suresh, Board Member(Finance), AAI reiterated AAI’s vision of going global by providing the world aviation fraternity AAI’s cutting edge technologies such as SkyRev360, GAGAN, NOCAS, Airport Consultancy, Development and Designing.

He also said the capacity building initiative will help AAI in developing professional workforce to address the problems faced by world aviation fraternity relating to e-data gathering, Invoicing and collection of Aeronautical and non-aeronautical charges. During the event, Alexandre de Juniac, Director General and CEO, IATA appreciated AAI’s role in helping various countries facing problems for invoicing and collection of aeronautical and non-aeronautical charges. SriLankan partners with Air Seychelles

riLankan Airlines and Air Seychelles have entered into a Special Prorate Agreement that will enhance their respective route networks and provide greater travel options in a seamless manner to passengers of both airlines with effect from April 1, 2018.

Ukraine International launches direct flights between Delhi and Kiev O n Tuesday, May 1, Ukraine International operated the first non-stop scheduled flights from Kiev to Delhi, India. The inaugural flight touched down at Delhi on May 2. The lamp lighting was done at Indira Gandhi International Airport Delhi by H. E. Igor Polikha, Ambassador of Ukraine in India, Simon Bundle, Vice President Industry and international Affairs and Subhash Goyal, Chairman, STIC Travel Group (India Representative).

Followed by the ceremony, the press conference was held at The Park Hotel, Connaught Place, New Delhi, followed by Lunch. The spokesperson from Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) was Anton Mattis, Director Sales and Sergey Fomenko, Vice President Commerce.

nterGlobe Aviation Ltd (IndiGo) recently announced the appointment of Rahul Bhatia as its interim Chief Executive Officer. Rahul will continue as a Director of the Company. The Company also announced the appointment of Gregory Taylor as Senior Advisor to the Company reporting directly to Rahul. Aditya Ghosh is resigning from the post of President of IndiGo effective July 31, 2018 and as a Director of the Company with effect from April 26, 2018.

In the coming months, the Board will consider the appointment of Greg as President and CEO of the Company, subject to receiving the necessary regulatory approvals and paperwork.
