Delhi Traffic Police launches web portal D elhi Traffic Police on Monday launched a website for the convenience of commuters in the national capital to facilitate traffic movement during the Commonwealth Games.

The traffic police in the past used a similar technology -- social networking to connect with people and work together in ensuring greater safety on Delhi’s roads. It launched its Facebook account in May 2010, which now has around 33,000 followers.

The website will run best on Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, and requires a bandwidth of one Mbps to run smoothly.

Germans to study Gandhi at Gujarat Vidyapith

S

etting a unique example of IndoGerman association, the Gujarat Vidyapith and Georg August University of Gottingen in Germany have joined hands to start a course on Gandhian ideology. This will enable German students, who sign up for this course, to come to Gujarat for a sixmonth semester.

Registrar of the Gujarat Vidyapith said that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed recently and the course was expected to begin this year. The course could be a post-graduate degree course or a one-year diploma.

“Whatever is the case, the students

who sign up for the Gandhian ideology course in Germany will be coming to Gujarat Vidyapith for six months and learn all about Gandhi and his values,” he said. Special arrangement were being made to involve faculty members who would converse with the students in English. The special emphasis would be laid on non-violence which was advocated by Gandhi to be practised in personal and public life.

At present, Gujarat Vidyapith offers a course in Gandhi Darshan which is quite popular with students from the West. Meanwhile, officials said that the association with the

German university would also entail an exchange programme where students of the sociology department of the Gujarat Vidyapith would go to Germany to study the social life practised in that country and carry out a comparative study of practices in sociology in Germany and India.

The Vidyapith officials said that this was one of the most significant associations that they had struck with an international university.

“In the past, we have routinely got inquiries from universities from US and Japan but this is one of the most significant associations to have worked out,” the registrar said.

Cyber crime complainants fight shy of FIRs O

Power, privilege, corruption, hypocrisy There is nothing to be proud of India’s ranking in the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index 2009. The country ranked low also in the Bribe Payers Index among emerging economic giants.

here is nothing to be proud of India’s ranking in the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index 2009.

The country ranked low also in the Bribe Payers Index among emerging economic giants. The use of public funds for private gain is common.

The misuse of power, position and privilege is widespread. Corruption seems to be a fact that affects all sections of society.

Misappropriation of public funds and acquisition of ill-gotten wealth are clearly illegal. However, subtler forms of non-material corruption, coupled with abuse of power and misuse of privilege, are equally prevalent but not often debated.

Power corrupts: Lord Acton said: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” This aphorism is widely acknowledged as true. William Pitt, the Elder, a British Prime Minister, echoed similar sentiments when he said “unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it.” Both seem to have based their observations on anecdotal evidence rather than formal research. The systematic enquiry and evaluation of evidence in social sciences were not standard in their times.

Corrupts absolutely: Recent research confirms Lord Acton’s dictum that power corrupts. Contemporary research has focussed on issues

related to power and on the state of powerfulness and powerlessness; on how power affects people’s behaviour and thinking. The evidence suggests that people who believe that they deserve their power and position are

of divergent values and principles by the individuals involved results in hypocrisy. One could argue that corruption and hypocrisy are the price society pays for being led by the privileged.

Studies have documented that power and hypocrisy go hand in hand as the powerful feel a sense of entitlement; their sense of privilege become private law. The culture of entitlement results in double standards, one for themselves, their family and friends, and the other for the general population. Such use

If organisational structures provide greater and illegitimate influence with the rise in status within institutional hierarchies, then loftier titles and higher ranks mean illicit power. Power

will attract those who seek to use and misuse such licence for their own ends.

Power and corruption seem to have a complex and bidirectional relationship. In societies which accept corruption as part of life, power appears to attract the corrupt and those in power encourage corruption.

These associations seem to work on the whole, with exceptions proving the rule.

Corruption and India: While no society is free from corruption, what is worrying is that such behaviour appears normalised in India. The licence raj of the past did not help. Capitalism, globalisation and liberalisation have also increased the pressure to succeed, achieve targets and acquire wealth quickly. The abuse of public power, office and resources for personal gain is common. A culture, which declares conflicts of interests and institutes systems to assess them, is rare and yet to take hold in India.

No organisation is immune to the abuse of power. The intense desire to leave lasting legacies and to make significant changes in institutional direction and function often result in decision-makers short-circuiting standard procedures. The culture of sycophancy, common in our culture and society, aids and abets in such corruption. Double standards in public life are accepted; hypocrisy is tolerated and is the norm.

The way forward: We need to focus on power and highlight the abuse of privileges. Corruption does not necessarily imply financial fraud.

All of us need to examine ourselves as individuals to identify, minimise and eliminate double standards and hypocrisy. We need to audit our systems and institutions to change the culture, which breeds such corruption.

The task is to identify power, which comes with position, to recognise conflicts of interest and to detect feelings of entitlement, which turn the privilege of office into private law.

The struggle is not a one-time affair in the lives of individuals, systems and communities but a constant quest, a journey. Society should allow for greater social mobility for wider social participation and greater equality.

There is need to re-examine our culture, which has normalised corruption in its many different forms.

We in India need to acknowledge the need for introspection on our acceptance of the abuse of power.

The “Seven Nolan Principles of Public Life” — selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership by example — should form the standards for holding public office. There should be regular and independent reviews of individual and organisational functioning. The challenge is to inspire and change individuals and to transcend and transform societal norms.

Quietly, US military opens up to Sikhs

G

rowing up near the air force base in Dayton, Ohio, Tejdeep Singh Rattan knew he wanted to serve in uniform. When the military discouraged him, he persisted but again got a cold shoulder. When he was turned away a third time, Rattan -- an observant Sikh with a turban and beard -- became suspicious.

“I was, like, I don’t know what’s going on,” he said. “I was very introverted at the time. I never felt the need to fight back. But I said I really want to do this, and you guys are sending me out again and again.”

The 31-year-old is now US Army Captain Rattan, since July the head dentist at the Fort Drum base in New York. In what appears to be a quiet shift, the US military since last year has allowed Rattan and two other Sikhs to serve while retaining their turbans and beards, which are required by their faith.

Rattan and another Sikh who received approval last year -- Captain Kamaljeet Singh Kalsi, a doctor -- said in interviews that their superiors had welcomed them warmly. Kalsi, 34 said that on his first day of training at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, a first sergeant pulled him out of the crowd and told the soldiers about the Sikh’s long ordeal to enlist.

“These were his words: ‘The Army is made up of different shades of green, and if you have any objection to him being here, you need to tell me now,’” Kalsi said. “It was great; everybody clapped.” The US Sikh community -- estimated at more than half a million -- suffered hate crimes after

the September 11, 2001 attacks by assailants who falsely associated the religion founded in India with al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

“I think the only way for that perception to be eliminated is when young Sikhs come up and say: I want to serve in the military,” Rattan said.

“For me, I said whatever it takes, I’m going to fight this thing -- I’m going to serve. Maybe if nothing else comes out of it, people will know who Sikhs are,” he said. Sikhs have a historic military culture and have long kept their articles of faith in the militaries of Britain, Canada and India.

Small numbers of Sikhs for years served in the US armed forces without incident. But in the 1980s, the postVietnam War military moved to increase conformity and banned displays of religious identity for new recruits.

The Supreme Court in 1986 upheld the military’s right to prohibit a Jewish officer from wearing a yarmulke.

In response, Congress approved a law requiring the military to approve soldiers’ religious apparel if it is “neat and conservative.”

Army spokesman George Wright said that it evaluated each Sikh soldier’s request based on “unique facts and individual circumstances.”

“It is the Army’s policy to accommodate religious practices as long as the practice will not have an adverse impact on military necessity,” Wright said.

Indian train kills 7 elephants in West Bengal A

speeding freight train has struck a herd of elephants in a densely forested region in eastern India, killing seven.

The herd was crossing the tracks in Banarhat forest in West Bengal state at around midnight on Wednesday when the train plowed into it, said Sumita Ghatak, a district forest officer.

‘This is the first incident in the state when so many elephants have been killed in a single accident. It is really shocking,’ Ghatak said.

It has since been learned that two baby elephants had been trapped on the tracks and the adults had come to their rescue.

Outraged wildlife activists said they had complained to railroad authorities many times, asking them

to divert trains to other routes or avoid running trains through forests at night. Animesh Basu, who runs the Himalayan Nature and Adventure Foundation, said conservationists have been urging railways to instruct drivers to slow down while traveling in forest areas.

Dozens of elephants have died in India in recent years after being hit by trains. India’s wild elephant population was recently estimated at around 26,000.

Obama to arrive in India on Diwali night WASHINGTON: Save some of those firecrackers if you are a fan of Barack Obama and/or a votary of better India-US ties: The American President will arrive in India on Diwali night, at the tail-end of the festival of lights.

The White House has advanced President Obama’s visit to India by two days, according to sources. He will now be landing in India on the night of November 5, flying most likely into Mumbai first.

He is scheduled to address a US-India Business and Entrepreneurship Summit in Mumbai on November 6 and pay homage to victims of the 26/11 terrorist attack before flying up north.

As reported in these columns, Obama will also make a daytrip to Amritsar on November 7 before he touches New Delhi for a formal ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Although the schedule could change, he is expected to address a joint session of Parliament on November 8 before leaving for Indonesia on the second leg of his four-country tour.

In fact, Obama will leave Washington DC on the night of November 4 soon after the mid-term

Congressional election where many pundits are predicting severe reverses for the Democratic Party. He will be away from the US for almost 12 days, one of the longest tours during his presidency, touching India, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea, before returning to Washington DC on November 14.

The four-country visit involves major US friends and allies at a time when there is concern in Washington and Asian capitals over China’s assertive stance.

The trip, for now, also excludes Pakistan, Washington’s notional ally, which typically agitates for a visit whenever US presidents travel to India, and is peeved if that does not happen.

First Lady Michelle Obama is expected to accompany him on at least the first leg of his tour to India, contrary to earlier reports. But their children, Malia and Sasha, are likely to miss out on a holiday they were reported to have looked forward to, because they will not be allowed to miss school.

Obama will be the sixth American President to visit India after (in preceding order) Presidents Bush, Clinton, C a r t e r , Nixon and Eisenhower.

oted Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has won three medals in the North American sand sculpting competition at Virginia Beach as part of the Neptune Festival 2010 celebrating its 37th anniversary. Pattnaik, one of 11 professional sculptors to take part in the largest competition of its kind in the US, won medals for Neptune’s Choice, Sculptor’s Choice and fifth place in the solo championship at Virginia Beach, about 200 miles from Washington, on the east coast.

Pattnaik, the first sand artist from India to win this championship in US, created a sand sculpture of Neptune giving the message ‘Save The Sea from Oil Spill’. He was presented the medals Saturday in a grand prize distribution ceremony by ‘King of Neptune’ Bruce L Thompson.

An elated Pattnaik said: “I am very happy to have won three medals for India in a championship in solo category. This is the first time I have won three medals in a single championship”.

He has participated in more than 40 sand sculpture championships around the world and won many prizes. He is also running a school to teach sand sculpting in Orissa.

It’s what you don’t see

T

his month a muted Eid marked the end of a troubled Ramzan in Kashmir. As the protests rolled into their third month, it was obvious that the whispered Eid “package” from New Delhi was conjured up with no more than paper and string. In place of conciliation, what emerged was an endless chain of distractions.

The first red herring presented itself on Eid, when two government offices were set ablaze, as over a hundred thousand people gathered to protest at Lal Chowk, Srinagar. It was followed by an arson attack on a school run by Christian missionaries in Tangmarg the next day; a reaction, we were told, to televised images of the desecration of the Koran in faraway America. The two were swiftly connected: the headline of ‘Kashmir on Fire!’ conjoined with talk of an ‘Islamic’ resurgence.

It was only a few days later that some sceptics began to sniff around in the smoke. One netizen provided a map of Srinagar, flagging off the key elements in the geography of the arson. While the protesting crowds were at Lal Chowk, the offices they were said to have gutted — the crime branch headquarters, and the power development department — happened to be almost a kilometer away, across the river Jhelum. Not only would the arsonists have had to push their way through a high security zone, their target lay right across the road from the heavilyprotected Legislative Assembly building.

In the attack on the school, on the other hand, the arsonists were identified.

They were led by a politician of the National Conference (NC), the very party that runs the state government!

What makes it more unusual is that NC cadres had been totally absent in the last few months of protests, afraid that people would lynch them.

These incidents played a critical part in distracting attention from the political content of the street protests, although hints about where the discourse was headed were in the air. Discussions on the protests in Kashmir were effortlessly morphing into a debate on the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).

Indeed, the whispers around the Eid “package” were all about how — or how much — it would tinker with the act.

Television debates became focused on it, newspapers were commenting on it: nothing seemed to be able to dislodge it from the agenda.

Interestingly, civil society activists in Kashmir have never been exercised about AFSPA alone. They insist that the lives of people are more affected, for example, by the Public Safety Act (PSA), under which thousands of people have

been put away, without hope of judicial redress. But nothing could deter from the obsession with AFSPA. Not even the anonymous appearance of a disturbing three-minute video of five young men stripped naked, then paraded through a village in Kashmir, in an exercise in ritual humiliation performed by the forces.

Almost imperceptibly, the armed forces have become the centre of the story.

The debate has turned into a loyalty test for Indians: whoever wants the act to go must obviously have no regard for the soldiers of this country. Or its flag.

Or its greatness. One retired general argued that AFSPA was essential to keep the highways secure, to ensure supply lines for Indian troops in Siachen… You could be forgiven for thinking that what the Indian Army most needed in its faceoff with Pakistan is not more officers or better-trained soldiers or bulletproof jackets. It is AFSPA. Why aren’t we being able to admit that the real problem is not the legitimate protection it offers to the armed forces, but the impunity it simultaneously grants.

We could begin by talking about the April 2010 killings in Machhil, where three civilians were murdered in cold blood, shot by uniformed soldiers of the Indian

Army. We could summon up sympathy for Captain Sumit Kohli, a decorated army officer, whose mother is fighting to establish that her son was murdered. Shot by his colleagues, she argues, for trying to expose the cold blooded murder of four civilian porters in the Lolab valley in 2004. Taking shelter under AFSPA, the army officers were able to argue their way out of a sentence. The army has so far not shown itself open to scrutiny on this.

The distance between the situation in Kashmir and its representation in India was underscored last week when the allparty delegation visited the Valley. Even

as their 36-hour excursion was being hailed as ‘historic’ and ‘path-breaking’, what the intrusive glare of publicity made really apparent was the chaos and just how out of touch our parliamentarians were with the discourse in Kashmir.

Faced with the failure of a ‘security’led approach to the issues of Kashmir, we are now faced with the bankruptcy of political ideas. Is this what the red herrings this Eid are meant to distract us from?

Rajasthan will bring more villages under its Rural tourism project by 2015. The project started in 2009 with three villages under phase one, and this year the state would add another five.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ‘Rajasthan Calling’ conference here on Monday, Ghanshyam Gangwal, deputy director, Department of Tourism, Rajasthan, said, “We are creating infras-tructure, which is an important aspect for drawing more tourists. In five years, we will select one village each from the existing 33 districts.”

“Rajasthan Calling” is a roadshow being organised by Rajasthan Tourism to promote its tourism and attract domestic tourists to the state. The two-day festival is part of Rajasthan Tourism’s domestic tourism promotion campaign to be held in 19 major cities across the country.

“The state is focusing more on attracting domestic tourism. With 1.46 million foreign tourists and 28.3 million domestic tourists in 2008, Rajasthan is now one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in India,” he added.

The state would come up with a 50-acre convention centre with an investment of ‘ 100 crore by 2012. The convention centre, the first such centre in Rajasthan, will have a capacity to house around 5, 000 delegates.

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel faced some uncomfortable moments at the O’Hare airport in Chicago when he was quizzed by the U.S. immigration authorities after his name and date of birth matched with that of another person reportedly on America’s watch-list.

Mr. Patel, who was in Chicago on a private visit, flew to Montreal for attending an official engagement.

Seeking to downplay the incident, Mr. Patel said “I am in Montreal

and nothing serious has happened... there is a person with similar name and birth date. That’s why they just double checked.”

Mr. Patel was questioned by the immigration officials after his name matched with that of another Praful Patel, who is reportedly on U.S.’ watch list.

The Minister was asked why he was visiting the U.S. and whether he had stayed in the country earlier.

Highly talented, they were soon being labelled future national stars as they played pivotal roles in their Sonepat CRZ School’s hockey team’s victories. Bharat Chikara (now 24) made it to the national squad, but Amit Saroha’s (now 25) could not. He struggled at the junior level and almost quit the sport before that choice was taken out of his hands.

She adds that for those addicted to love, the concept of being in love is more alluring than actually loving the other person. “They visualise conditions that do not exist, perceive things that are not actually there and fall in love because of these wrong reasons.

Unfortunately, after some time the love begins to fade out,” she explains.

Defining love addiction, clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, Seema Hingorrany says, “Just like in any addiction the person is unwilling to let go off the thing they are hooked on to, a love addicted gets so obsessed with the idea of being in love that it starts hampering their self esteem and confidence. Their behaviour, actions, etc depends on the other persons opinions and vies. Also, even if the couple splits, the one who is addicted to love is not able to forget the partner and let go of him/her,” she explains.

So what’s the solution? According to Varkha, love addicts need a sensible education in love and loving. “This way they can unlearn all their pre-conceived notions about love,” she says.

Seema adds saying, “Love addicts must first learn to love themselves. That apart, they have to learn to draw limits and boundaries for themselves. If one is going through a crisis, divert your attention or distract yourself by cultivating a hobby to keep your mind occupied.”

Pankaj Udhas launches new album Shaayar T

he legendry ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas launched his album Shaayar yesterday at Landmark Store, Infinity Mall. The album was inaugurated by none other than Pandit Jasraj. Shaayar is a tribute to legendary poet Daagh Dehalvi.

The event started with two ghazals from the album sung by Pankaj Udhas himself. The singer set a melodious atmosphere with his harmonious voice.

Singers like Talat Aziz, Anoop Jalota, Ashok Bhosla came in to support Pankaj Udhas. Also a lot of friends from outside the music fraternity came in to lend their support.

Akashdeep came in with wife Sheeba. Krishika Lulla was seen interacting with Kiron Sippy. Shibani Kashyap made a late entry.

usic composer Pritam Chakroborty, who is a favourite of the Bhatt camp, brings forth another likeable soundtrack in forthcoming film “Crook”. Even though the compositions fall under his signature style and not much experimentation is involved, the tracks do have the potential of getting noticed.

Directed by Mohit Suri, the film stars Emraan Hashmi. The album boasts of eight tracks.

The soundtrack begins on an upbeat note with “Challa”, a song soaked in Punjabi flavour. It’s an energetic, foot-tapping number that holds the interest of the listener.

Sung by Babbu Mann and Suzanne D Mello, it surely is a good start to the album.

The song also has a remixed version. The mood of the album then shifts to a soft, romantic track “Mere bina”, sung by Nikhil DSouza. The song has influences of rock that gives it an edge and makes it interesting.

It also has an unplugged version with KK behind the mike. This one is a shade better than the original track and immediately strikes a chord with the listener.

Next in line is “Kya”, which is a typical Neeraj Sridhar song. An amalgamation of Hindi and English lyrics with strong orchestration and a western approach, the song is quite apt for the singer’s voice. It is neither bad nor brilliant.

Then KK returns with “Tujhi mein”, yet anothert romantic

track. Even though the song is hummable and soft, it has a heard-before feeling.

The song’s reprise version, sung by the same singer, is better and more appealing than the original.

Finally there is a beautiful song in “Tujhko jo paaya”. The track has the acoustic guitar in prominence that gives it a pure and raw feel. Mohit Chauhan’s brilliant vocals give the song an edge. The song is like a country version “Mere bina”.

On the whole, the soundtrack of “Crook” follows Pritam’s formula that usually results in hits.

Toshiba libretto® W100 Dual-Screen Laptop PC Build good, battery bad, geek-cred off the chart

oshiba’s Libretto W100 flew off Amazon’s shelves when it went on sale earlier this week, with the retailer already confirming that its initial stock is exhausted. So, how exactly are the first customers liking the dual-touchscreen clamshell? Jenn over at Pocketables knows her stuff when it comes to ultraportables, and she seems pretty blown away by the W100 – that’s despite only 4hrs runtime with the bloated extended battery, laggy screen rotation and an uncertain target market.

With the standard battery, meanwhile, Jenn’s getting around two hours of runtime, and the top half of the notebook – which houses the mainboard, SSD and other components – gets toasty warm, too.

Still, the W100 is still her new favorite: that’s primarily down to the versatility of the two screens (which can be used to spread a single app across or showing things independently), great build quality and the sheer geek factor.

We’re having a hard time getting past the short battery life, but the twin touchscreens of the W100 certainly spark off a certain amount of geek lust. So far there’s no sign of the optional 3G that Toshiba told us would be available back at the W100′s launch, but the company has confirmed UK pricing – £765.11 excluding tax ($1,100) – ahead of UK availability.

Interpol chief’s identity stolen on Facebook HONG KONG: Criminals stole the Facebook identity of Interpol head Ronald K Noble and used it to obtain information on an operation by the international police agency, Noble said.

“Just recently Interpol’s Information Security Incident Response Team discovered two Facebook profiles attempting to

assume my identity as Interpol’s secretary general,” Noble told the first Interpol Information Security Conference in Hong Kong.

“One of the impersonators was using this profile to obtain information on fugitives targeted during our recent Operation Infra Red.” The operation brought together investigators from 29 member countries to target criminals on the run from justice for crimes including murder, paedophilia, drug trafficking and money laundering, Interpol’s website said. It led to more than 130 arrests, Noble said.

“This is why we constantly need to share our experience,” he added at the opening ceremony of the conference.

Indian co drags Microsoft to CCI NEW DELHI: Global software major Microsoft Corp has been dragged to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) by a law firm for allegedly abusing its dominant position as a market leader.

Singhania & Partners has filed a complaint against Microsoft alleging

that software company first signed an agreement to sell a software at a certain price, but later raised the price intending not to sell it, sources said.

The law firm had placed an order for MS operating systems and MS Office software. They had paid 50 per cent advance the got quotations for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) licences, but at the time of delivery Microsoft said that they would give them volume licence, which would cost the firm double the price.

The life of an OEM finishes with the life of a computer, while that of a volume licence is transferable.

"Singhania & Associates has argued before the Commission that why should Microsoft dictate terms as to what order should be placed," a source said.

Singhania has also complained that MS practices differential and discriminatory pricing, suggesting prices according to the size of the company.

"The complaint has been received under Section 4 of the Competition Act 2002. The Commission is yet to take a view on it," an official said.

The case is represented by Seth Dua & Associates. When contacted, Microsoft India spokesperson said, "We don't comment on any matters that are before government agencies. Microsoft is committed to complying with all relevant laws in each jurisdiction where it does business, including India."

The Competition Act of 2002, empowers CCI to look into complaints relating to anticompetitive agreements and abuse of dominant market position.

What’s common between 3 Idiots, Khichdi and Golmaal 3?

Munni to endorse balm Malaika Arora becomes beneficiary of settlement between her husband’s production company and a brand named in the Munni track.

The standoff between Arbaaz Khan Productions (AKP) and a company that produces balms, has come to an end.

Says Khan, “It’s all been amicably sorted, out of court, thanks to adman Prahlad Kakkad. He knew both parties very well and initiated discussions.”

He adds, “It was always a win-win situation for both sides. We will have tie-ups with their company. Malaika will be their brand ambassador.” Incidentally, Kakkad is expected to shoot the first balm ad with Malaika.

That said, AKP was ready to take the fight to the other party. Says a source from Arbaaz’s company, “We were in consultation with lawyers. If the balm company so desired, we were ready to take them on. This was just an attempt to latch on to Dabangg’s success.”

The source adds, “According to statistics, the business for the balm company multiplied substantially since the song came out.”

Arbaaz and his team have learnt a lesson from a previous legal wrangle when someone had objected to the use of the use of the word ‘Hindustan’ just before the release of the film. “We panicked because we had a delivery date staring us in the face. We changed the word to ‘Gulistan’ in the song. This time we were not pressured by deadlines. We were ready to go to court.”

The block buster movie ‘3 Idiots’ and the soon to release ‘Khichdi’ and ‘Golmaal 3’ share a very interesting connection.

The first look posters of these movies are ‘ulta’. No no not upside down but the casts’ backs are featured in their respective posters.

The poster of 3 ‘Idiots’ showcases Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and Madhavan happily sitting on their thrones facing their backs.

The amazing Khichdi poster that was launched on 27th August, 2010 outside SRK’s Mannat features all its

actors standing backwards looking at their funny reflection. The actors were extremely thrilled to see how the poster had turned out.

“The audiences’ response towards our poster was enormous. All the fans absolutely adored the first look,” commented JD Majethia.

Strangely, ‘Golmaal 3’ has followed the same trend and launched their poster in September featuring their actors’ backs. The ‘back’ poster trend seems to catch pace, bringing all these movies on common grounds.

“I will spend quality time with the person that bids generously. All the money is going to a good cause, and I will reciprocate by offering some valuable fitness techniques to the participant. It is the story of a twelve year old orphan boy BARU and his courageous journey to free his sister ANANNYA (fondly called as ANI), from the clutches of the Devil Prince - ZUKAYU. BARU’S parents were very sincere and honest people. Once, they prayed to god to give them such a power by which they would be able to serve or help the people better. Their wish was granted! And to their happiness, they were blessed with a daughter, who would get the power called KABOOM on the day she turns three!

Unfortunately, the news about KABOOM reached the Devil’s Kingdom very soon. And as soon as the Devil Prince ZUKAYU heard this, he started making malicious schemes to snatch the great power of KABOOM, before it was bestowed upon ANI. Soon after ANI was born, BARU’S parents were going to the other village through a jungle when something mysterious happened. They vanished without

a trace, never to be seen again!

From then on BARU looked after his kid sister, and showered all his love and affection on this angel. BARU did not know that ANI was actually a gifted child. Inspite of all the difficulties, BARU’s love for his little sister remains constant. It is this love that becomes his biggest strength.

Raaj Varma and Anjum Rizvi’s upcoming film A FLAT, which releases in the first week of October, has already sent shivers down Jimmy Shergill’s spine, who stars in the movie alongside Sanjay Suri, Kaveri Jha and Hazel.

Jimmy recalls while shooting for a spooky sequence for the film, he gave his shot as usual and immediately went to the monitor to check if the shot was proper. The following scenes which occurred on the monitor were unbelievable. The scene was such that Jimmy was looking at a book and hazel was standing behind him in ghost look.

A source said, “Hazel was looking so scary that when Jimmy saw the shot on the monitor he got extremely scared and jumped off his seat.” Jimmy couldn’t believe the shot could have been as scary as it didn’t feel while enacting in that specific shot. A crew member said, “Jimmy was really scared after looking at the shot, and his eye balls bulge out.”

Jimmy now believes that all those who like horror movies, A FLAT is a must watch for them. The cinematography in the film is very thrilling giving a Hollywood film feel.

x-cricketer Salim Durrani started this practice of cricketers taking a liking to Bollywood in the seventies when he teamed up with Praveen Babi in CHARITRA. The practice got a boost when news broke out that master blaster Sachin Tendulkar will make his Bollywood debut with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s FERRARI KI SAWARI. The story of the film revolves around a boy who is inspired by a cricket legend’s Ferrari to play at the Lords cricket ground.

The film to be directed by Rajesh Mapuskar will have Tendulkar act alongside Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani.

arah Khan is ready to entertain audiences with all sorts of surprises up her sleeve in her forthcoming TEES MAAR KHAN which hits theatres this December.

This time around Farah Khan has accomplished the feat of bringing together Akshay Kumar and wife Twinkle Khanna on the silver screen together after 11 years.

The sequence shot with Twinkle Khanna is Farah’s signature cast and crew credit roll at the end of the movie introducing audiences to everyone who has been part of its making- a customary in all Farah Khan films.

Since Hari Om Productions has co-produced the film along with Three’s Company -Twinkle Khanna who will feature as a producer will walk alongside husband Akshay

irector Rohit Shetty is back with the third installment in the Golmaal series titled Golmaal 3. Following Golmaal Returns that came out in 2008, Golmaal 3 will have the beloved ‘Golmaal Gang’ of Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade. While Kareena Kapoor plays the heroine, Kunal Khemu, Mithun Chakraborty, Ratna Pathak and Johny Lever are new additions to the cast.

Like its prequels, Golmaal 3 will also be a rib-tickling comedy caper.

Ajay Devgn, who plays the character named Gopal, will be seen in a never seen before avatar with a rugged hair style and a toned, tattooed torso. On the other hand, Kareena Kapoor will be playing a tomboy character for the first time. She will play a badass who spouts abusive tapori language and rides around on a bike, doing dadagiri like boys in gang.

Golmaal 3 is written by Rohit Shetty and Neeraj Vora. The film is produced by Dhillin Mehta under the banner of Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd. Pritam has scored the music for the film.

Golmaal 3 will be distributed by Eros International and is scheduled for release on November 5, 2010.

Action Replayy to clash with Golmaal 3 this Diwali

et ready for two fun films done in two different shades of laughter clash this Diwali. Vipul Shah’s Action Replayy will take on Golmaal 3, the third instalment of the Golmaal series.

But Vipul is pretty much confident there is room for two fun films.

“Haven’t we always had two big releases every Diwali? Besides the humour in the Golmaal is very different from the humour in my film. There’s already an established convention of humour in Golmaal. Ours is a very different take.”

The film has Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Bachchan travelling back in time to the 1970s. “But,” cautions Vipul Shah, “There is more than just the retro effect in the film. I don’t want audiences to go for the film expecting just a nostalgic experience.”

In a few days, Akshay and Aishwarya would be playing deejays at a night club in the suburbs of Mumbai where they will be playing all their favourite music from the 1970s.

“I hope the two of them

come prepared for the event with the songs,” says Vipul.

Last week, Vipul Shah made news by gifting Akshay Kumar a Rs. 8 lakh rupee 1938 vintage watch for the star’s birthday. Vipul is embarrassed, “Gifts are not to be talked about.”

‘Do Dooni Chaar’ reflects reality!

We hear the message of the film “Do Dooni Char” is hidden in its title.

You are absolutely right. The film is called Do Dooni Char and that’s what the message of the film is. The life’s mantra should be that two and two makes four and not five. That’s what the central character in the film, Mr. Duggal does in the film. He goes the right way and how he goes the right way is what the movie about.

Is this film going to be a one off re-entry for you or are you eyeing other films too?

Frankly speaking, I’m not interested right now. I am open to movies, but very selective. But then again, I don’t want to commit to them. In the near future, you never know, I may do something with Ranbir. I can’t leave my family and go on outdoor shoots and at the moment, my family won’t even allow me as they are too possessive about me. But may be something like Do Dooni Chaar comes my way and I may say ‘Yes’ to it.

And last few words on Ranbir Kapoor before we end this interview please?

No one pushed me to do Do Dooni Chaar. It was my own decision. Honestly, I didn’t want to do a film ever in my life after I quit.

I had blocked my mind off movies and my life was - my children and my husband.

But this was very special because my husband was very excited about it. is known as our country’s finest actors. But what really makes me happy is when people come up to me and say that he is a good person.

Some of them have even said that he is good to his spot boy as he is to his co-stars. Ranbir doesn’t make an effort, he is like that. He is very grounded by nature. That’s Ranbir’s victory. He will go a long way if he remains like this.

Why Deepika refused to work with Ranbir?

The actor -- who with his namesakes Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan is one of the Indian film industry’s leading Muslim actors -- also questioned Indian claims that the Pakistani state helped plan the atrocities.

The real reason why Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone couldn’t work together despite agreeing to do so is out.

Now, according to latest reports, Deepika and Ranbir couldn’t work together since the director of the said film SILENCE kept making changes in the script that put off Deepika.

It would have been a casting coup. Getting Deepika and Ranbir together after their break-up was no mean feat by all standards. But, Anurag Basu, who is directing the film, kept making changes in the script which finally led to Deepika walking out of the film.

Well, let’s hope there will be someone else in bollywood who can stage this seemingly impossible thing of bringing Ranbir and Deepika together once again. For the moment Anurag Basu couldn’t do it.

BODYGUARD

Malayalam film BODYGUARD is being remade in Hindi with Salman Khan in the lead and to star opposite him, producer Atul Agnihotri has chosen Kareena Kapoor. The film titled MY LOVE STORY will be directed by Siddiqui Earlier, the producer had approached Katrina Kaif with the role, but she refused the film as she didn’t have dates matching the scheduled release of the film on Eid next year.

The film’s protagonist is a young man with a strange proclivity - He always wants to emulate anyone he admires. He doesn’t care what his hero does - he could be a cop or a crook. Also, when he starts admiring someone he wants to be close to the person, act as his bodyguard!

The film’s producer, Atul Agnihotri, had earlier approached Salman and Kareena have earlier been paired in KYON KI (2005) and MAIN AURR MRS KHANNA (2009). Both the films didn’t do well at the Box Office.

The film will go on the floors this December.

esteryears’ star Rishi Kapoor is happy that South Africa is playing host to a retrospective of his films, but feels sad that he is not getting recognition in his own country.

I

t has been a while since one saw the ravishing and sexy Zeenat Aman on the big screen. She finally makes her comeback into mainstream cinema with Sunjay Sharma’s Dunno Y... Na Jaane Kyun.

Zeenat Aman plays the character of a lady in her late forties, Rebecca who still looks beautiful look and charming. She uses her charisma to woo men into her life who help her cater to the needs of her family.

Her entire time and energy is spent on looking good and remaining fit without which she would not stand a chance in the lives of men she wishes to attract.

The role obviously demanded a glamorous persona and Zeenat gave it her all. She went through a strict

fitness and diet regime to lose weight and look beautiful.

According to sources,” For the film, she worked on herself for three months before the shoot began. She stuck to yoga and workout regimen for the desired result. To give an example of her seriousness, on the day of her look test, the actress didn’t eat a morsel until she finished the day’s shoot post which she ate steamed idli.”

Apparently, the clothes designed for her in Dunno Y... Na Jaane Kyun turned out to be larger in size after a few months into the shoot. In that gap she lost almost 12kgs. So the makers designed a whole new wardrobe to fit her.

“Amitabh Bachchan is an enigma. He is an industry by himself.

With the multiplex culture, I’m finally getting roles that I like, especially Do Dooni Char and Patiala House.

I don’t want to do any of those stereotypical father’s roles.”

“I’ve not been recognised as an actor in my own country. From 16th September, South Africa hosted a retrospective of my films to celebrate the 150 years since the first Indian went to South Africa,” said Rishi.

His Bobby, Karz, Chandni, LailaMajnu, Prem Rog, Luck By Chance, Love Aaj Kal, and Chintuji were screened during the retrospective.

“They’ve chosen eight of my films. I don’t entirely approve of their choice... I’d have liked films like Damini, Amar Akbar Anthony, Hum Kissi Se Kam Nahin and Doosra

Aadmi to be shown.

“I feel so dejected when I see other actors far more junior than me being recognised by the Indian government for their work. I’m being recognised in various parts of the world... but not in my own country.”

Rishi’s wife Neetu couldn’t accompany him to South Africa.

“Ranbir has just returned from Prague after a month. Neetu needs to spend time with him. We can’t leave him alone at home,” he said.

Rishi misses roles being written for him the way they are for Amitabh Bachchan.

“Amitabh Bachchan is an enigma.

He is an industry by himself.

As for reviving the onceillustrious R.K. Banner, Rishi sighed, “I’m one-third guilty.

of 15 in Mera Naam Joker. For 25 consecutive years, I worked as romantic hero. Then I almost immediately directed Aa Ab Laut Chalen. Then immediately after that started my journey playing older roles with Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi.

“I’ve been working almost nonstop for 42 years. Hang up the boots?

I enjoy my work. I’m very passionate about my work. If I don’t work, I’ll go into depression.”

Rishi is very excited about being paired with his wife in director Habib Faizal’s Do Dooni Char.

Netaji Bose’s slogan “Tum Mujhe Khoon Do Main Tumhe Aazadi Doonga” (You give me blood, I will give you freedom), to recruit men and women for his Indian National Army, has been used in an “extremely light and derogatory manner in the promos for the show,” lawyer Mehmood Abdi claimed.

According to Abdi, the attorney for suspended Indian Premier League Chairman Lalit Modi, the promos

showed various segments of the Indian population using this “sacred national slogan in joking ways.” Abdi said in the promotional for the show, its

depicted as if its host--Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan--is the person who has coined this clarion call during the British Raj and not Netaji Bose.

He has demanded an immediate withdrawal of the advertisement by promoters of the show and others including the show-hosting TV channel, besides seeking an unqualified apology, failing which he has threatened legal action. KBC-4 is expected be back on the television screens next month with Bachchan in the hot seat once again.

Sony TV has bought the rights for the hugely successful show this year.

Salman Butt forced me to fix, ‘confesses’ Aamer S

uspended Pakistan pacer Mohammad Aamer has reportedly confessed his role in the spot-fixing scandal but said he was forced into it by Test skipper Salman Butt, sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board told a news agency. The talented 18-year-old has told PCB chairman Ijaz Butt he never wanted to be part of this “business” (spot fixing) but was forced into it by Butt and Asif, PTI reported.

“Aamir had gone to Ijaz Butt and claimed he was innocent and a victim of the ‘senior’s power lobby’ in the team,” the source said. The development came on a day when manager Yawar Saeed stepped down from his post, five days after the team returned from its scandal-hit tour of England. The resignation was on the cards.

The PCB, however, denied Aamer’s “confession”. “All three (Butt, Aamer and Mohammad Asif) have been saying all along that they did not do anything wrong and they stand by it. We are waiting for Scotland Yard’s report,” said PCB’s legal adviser Tafazzul Rizvi .

Pakistani sports channel Geo Super, has reported that two days after the spot-fixing allegations were levelled against the trio (Aamer, Butt and Mohammad Asif) through a sting operation by British tabloid News of the World, a teary-eyed Aamer went to the team management and spilled the beans on Salman Butt.

Suspense and speculation over IPL GC composition

he talk in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is that there will be no major news for the media from its 81st annual general meeting (AGM).

“Everything is smooth this time.

We have no major news for you,” quipped a member. He may be right but the media, anyway, knows how to feed itself with the news.

On the eve of the AGM, speculation is rife over whether Sunil Gavaskar & Co will stay in the governing council of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The GC is set for recast accommodating only two former players in place of three.

The BCCI officials have been tight-lipped over the structure of the Governing Council. There are different theories going around.

One is that all three players — Ravi Shastri and MAK Pataudi besides Gavaskar — will be replaced by two new players like Javagal Srinath and

another former India player.

Another theory is that Shastri will stay with one of the other two. There are also whispers that Pataudi is not too keen to continue. The other big talk in the BCCI circle is that one of the three cricketers is believed to have told the Board that they should be paid $1 million to be part of the council. When asked about this, N Srinivasan refused to discuss the matter. “We cannot comment on such things.

All decisions will be announced at the press conference after the AGM,” he said. There was, however, no suspense over Srinivasan’s elevation to the president-elect post.

DNA had reported two years ago that the secretary is set to be the next president. On Tuesday, Srinivasan was elected unopposed to that post as were Niranjan Shah and Rajeev Shukla for the post of vice-president.

Sania Mirza keen to be at her best She had had not even reached her 16th birthday when won her first Asian Games medal in Busan. Sania Mirza has reached many milestones already, but she still has the urge to be at her best while competing for the country in multi-discipline events.

Recovering from a stiff back that had seen her drop plans to compete in China this week, Sania utilised her time to have a sharp training session with available resources at the Panchsheel Club even as her teammates were on the way to the Capital.

“It is the first time tennis is going to be part of the Commonwealth Games.

Hosting it in India is very special. It is a very big event for the country and for us athletes. I am looking forward to it,” said Sania.

“It is so different playing in the Games, particularly for us tennis players, who are used to travelling the circuit with parents, coaches and trainers. You have teammates, and you are not just playing for yourself, but for the country. It is a special feeling,” she said.

I have been with the core group of weightlifters since 2009. We have undergone a long and intense training in this span as we travelled across

four centres for training.

We started from Patiala, went to Bangalore then to Pune and Shilaroo and came back to Patiala. We had the services of a foreign coach in Pune.

We traversed the country to get better weather conditions while training. So of course, we have high hopes of doing well at the Commonwealth Games.

We have some of the best lifters and especially among the Commonwealth nations, our lifters are ranked pretty high. More importantly, many of us are peaking at the right time. So that is an added advantage.

Though the preparations have been good, the last one year has

brought us a lot of shame. Many of our colleagues have failed dope tests.

Our participation too was in jeopardy.

But we were focused because our federation heads and coach assured us that we will participate in the Delhi Games.

Surely, we are being looked down upon and with suspicion every time, but that doesn’t deter us from our ultimate goal. It’s like when you walk on the road, many people, most of them strangers, stare at you. One really doesn’t know why they look at you like that. But it doesn’t mean you stop walking on the road.

Similarly, we too have put in our

best and want to put the worst days behind. We have not lost our focus and have tried our best to concentrate on the job at hand. All of us have been looking forward to competing at the Games for a long time and have been preparing for many years just for this event.

The Delhi Games are a chance for us to redeem our pride and prove that we can win without doping. We are clean.

Combat sport needs an aggressive approach, so where did she gather her thrust during the bouts.

“I am very temperamental and get angry very soon. But I also calm down quickly too. And during my bouts, I remain very calm and never went on attacking mode in the initial rounds,” Mary said while disclosing her ring strategy.

“I study my opponents’ approach and analyse it before unleashing my own accordingly,” said the Lioness about her hunting tactics.

Winning gold is the most treasured moment of her career. “I love my first (gold medal) as much as my latest.

Gold medal gives me immense satisfaction.”

When forced to choose one, she said, “The one after becoming a mother was a special one.”

Mary also revealed that she will hang up the gloves after fulfilling her ultimate dream. “I want to be an Olympian and that’s something which still drives me forward,” she said about her desire to represent India at London Games in 2012.

“We can’t say I have achieved everything and stop. We have responsibility towards society and I am doing my bit through the academy,” she said proudly.

“I recruit kids from poor background and give them free training plus food and shelter. I have hired an assistant coach and pay his salary too,” she divulged her philanthropic side.

“I didn’t get any help from the state and haven’t asked for fund either. I want my students to start

winning medals in championships before looking for funds. I don’t want to look like someone who started the academy to earn money,” she explained her decision to keep the academy as a low-key affair.

When reminded that she got married in quite an early age, she said, “I had made my career then, and has my future in control. And also if I hadn’t got married at that right time, I would have to face the tough decision of choosing from many suitors now.”

Mary has an advice or two for the youngsters too, about relationships before marriage.

“Boyfriendgirlfriend is okay if you guys know that you will hook up for life. But just for the sake of it, when your parents send you for higher studies and better future in big cities then you must re-consider it,” signed off five-time world boxing champ exhibiting how stronger she is deep inside.

The words “Artava”, “Sonitha”, “Pushpa” and “Raktha” are used with similar intention. According to Ayurvedic Medicine menstrual cycle is called as “Rutu Sravam”. Masa means a lunar month. The ancient Indian authorities described that menstruation occurs every month from the age of twelve years up to the age of fifty years, which is said to be Rutu Sravam.

According to the conventional medicine the area of the brain called the hypothalamus, together with the pituitary gland, which also is in the brain; control the hormones necessary for reproductive health. Six hormones serve as chemical messengers to your reproductive system. These hormones include Gonadotropinreleasing hormone (GnRH), Folliclestimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing hormone (LH), Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone. According to Ayurvedic Medicine the whole process of menstruation is regulated by Doshas

(Humors), Rasa and Raktha Dhatus (Tissues). Apana Vata is a sub type of Vata which mainly influence the blood vessels in the uterus for the elimination or detoxification of “Raja” Menstrual Blood. Abnormalities in Vata dhosha and Raktha and Rasa dhatus will disturb the physiology of menstruation cycle and cause illness.

Whereas, there is no any restrictions according to the modern medicine but in Ayurveda there mentioned few tips for healthy menstrual cycle.

• Diet plays a large role in determining hormonal and menstrual health. If your body is depleted in nutrients, you will have a difficult time maintaining balance both physically and emotionally.

• Diet should be light, non residual (No left over’s) and low fat substances.

• Eating well can be challenging when you are busy - If you find it difficult to eat well consistently - invest in a good quality women’s multi-vitamin that is formulated to assist menstrual cycles.

Many of these contain the vitamins and minerals women need plus herbs to balance and regulate your cycle.

• Advised to live in a happy calm mood.

• Avoid coitus (sexual intercourse).

According to modern medicine there is no sound medical reason for advising against coitus. Whereas, Ayurveda clearly explains the reasons why one should not have coitus during menstrual cycle. According to

Susrutha (Father of Indian Surgery) it is a just like a floating substance dropped in a stream travels in the direction of flow and does not go against it, just in the same way shukra-purusha beeja (Sperm or Semen) though introduced, comes out along with Raja, hence there should be no intercourse. According

to Madhava (Ayurvedic Scholar) during this phase there is influence of Vata and Pitta on yoni (Vaginal) region with that the whole passage is somewhat in a state of Kshobha (Congestion), hence intercourse may cause pain and discomfort, so it is not advisable.

The researchers analysed data from 148 studies over three decades involving more than 300,000 people.

“Friends and supportive people can make life easier on a basic, everyday level,” said Bert Uchino of Brigham Young University in the US, who led the study.

perceived severity or even make them non-problems.”

“If patients do have good social relationships, they should maintain them. If they don’t, they should try to foster them,” he added.

How mind affects your body H

ave you noticed how, after someone you know has gone through a stressful situation, he or she developed health problems?

And have you noticed a connection between the health problems of a mother and her relationship with her

children? If a child refuses to accept his or her mother’s long cherished dream, the mother will develop knee pains or wheezes. That’s because the mind affects the body in ways that science is still trying to understand.

According to Indian holism, the body has five energy layers that are created and affected by their corresponding aspects.

Other common situations are, “The boss did not return my greeting, someone must have said something to him about me”. Or, “My boyfriend has not called for days. He must be having an affair with that hot girl at his office”.

Many of us believe that negative thinking is realistic thinking, so we protect ourselves by expecting the worst. But actually, negative thinking makes us powerless and joy-less. Safety lies in our wisdom, not in our minds. To think from the wisdom layer, you have to transcend the mind layer.

CAUSES OF CHILDHOOD DEPRESSION: The causes for a child to become depressed could be as complicated as the child itself and very difficult to be identified in several cases. However, the below are some of the major known causes: • ongoing conflict in the family or between parents • relationship problems with parents or carers • friendship problems • family break-up • death of close people or animals • events such as moving house and losing friends • some other upsetting events happening in the child’s life • serious or continuing illness or disability • abuse or bullying • continuing failure in the eyes of others at home or school • sometimes if a parent is depressed, children unconsciously learn the parent’s way of dealing with life • medications taken for other reasons occasionally disturb children’s moods.
